Is there a thread for it?
I use downloader to try and get an apk, but to install, I get a phone screen style popup and option to install or cancel at bottom right, but it acts like a touch screen mouse doesn't move around on screen.

The last time I did this with a Fire TV, I had to install an app called downloader. It’s in the store. Maybe try that?
My only other suggestion is if they have a remote with a keyboard or a touchpad, that might help you out.
You can also try using the firetv app from a smartphone or tablet.
Simple
Devices & Software -> Install unknown apps - allow
Download X-plore or ES and click permission "allow" to write in storage
Ideal is to have local NAS where you can store all fav apps, but both file managers will give you wifi file transfer in case you want to use your PC.
I guess thats it
Enjoy

I am anxious to find a version of Spotify that will work. I tried the standard version from the the Play store and also the tablet version for the Kindle Fire, but both launch to wrong orientation (sideways) and the remote doesn't work to move around the menu buttons.
Opening this thread up for continued development discussion on this.
There's some apps that fix the orientation problem, and you can try a mouse to navigate if the remote doesn't, i'm not a the house right now so I cant try it, i will try it later.
Fixed the orientation issue. It takes decompiling the APK (used apktool for that) then removing any android:screenOrientation="portrait" attributes from the AndroidManifest.xml file. For good measure, I also commented out any calls to setOrientation(I)V in the smali files (not sure that's required for the Spofity app, but found I needed to do disable setRequestedOrientation(I)V in other apps for the FireTV)
Unfortunately, apktool doesn't want to recompile the Spotify resources cleanly for the builds I was using, but read through the errors it throws and just clean up the offending lines. I used an attached keyboard/mouse to login, but now I just use the Amazon remote to click through things on my playlists (on some of the screens, it helps to push the the left before scrolling up or down). If you hit the search box, the on screen keyboard shows up... so while it's not ideal, you can get by with the standard remote.
I've posted a build if you want to try it out:
ht tp://d-h.st/Lel
you can try an app like this for the orientation
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nl.fameit.rotate

Spotify is now listed as "coming later this year" on the Fire TV product page.

I sideloaded it and it does play music, but the AFTV remote only manages to play and pause. I cannot scroll up or down or move in any direction, that I have to do with a USB keyboard.
Did you get the AFTV remote to work properly with spotify?

Works fine for me, can scroll through playlist although you can't open the sidebar. I don't mind much as I only need to open it on my AFTV and then I use spotify connect to play stuff on it from my Tablet/Phone.
can't use the remote

Hi,
I have a Fire TV stick and everything works great so far. However, I sideloaded an app, it launches ok and looks functioning, except I have no way of controlling it. I need to be able to move the (invisible) pointer to make some selections. I tried the Fire TV remote app on my N5, it seems to be able to send commands, but without a visible pointer, I can't make the right selection. Is there anyway to make the pointer visible on screen? Or anything I could solve this problem?
Thank you!

I installed WuKong TV Remote Control from Play Store on my phone. And then, you need to sideload the WuKong helper app on the Fire TV (I hope you know how to sideload). The WuKong helper app is this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wukongtv.wkhelper I just installed it on my phone also, and then use ES Explorer to back it up as an apk file. Copy that to the PC where you can sideload to the Fire TV. I later deleted the helper app from my phone (don't need it there).
Once that's done, you open up the remote app on the phone and the FireTV will show up, choose that to connect to it. And then use "Mouse" mode on the remote app.
I hope that's clear enough?

Probably should've asked this awhile ago...when I first started using aftv in June I tried a couple of web browsers but think I found they didn't work well. So I sort of stop pursuing it. Now I think it'd be useful. But I don't have a Bluetooth keyboard or harmony or melee f10 pro.
Ideally I'd want one that can either be controlled with the stock remote or my android phone or tablet.
Another option is to mirror my phone/tablet but we don't have great support there. I can mirror to apple TV with android but haven't found a way to do it with aftv. I'd be willing to purchase 3rd party software for it. To me that's preferable to shelling out money for a new remote. But yea, my first choice would be to install a web browser.

Which flash are you using? Only ones I find are browsers. I assume you meant a plugin?
Maxthon Browser. Maxthon is far and away the best browser I have used on the Fire TV. To mirror your Android device all you have to do is install MirrorOP reciever on the fire TV, and install MirrorOP sender on the Android device. You can also install MirrorOP sender on your PC and mirror your PC on the Fire TV too. No root needed. BTW, a browser is super useful on the Fire TV. I hate using two devices so the browser comes in handy so that I do not have to send files from my PC or phone etc, I can just download files with the browser. Having to use two devices is the same reason I refuse to use Plex.

See attached apk for flash. Note, you will not be able to open the app itself. Once installed, you can integrate it with Firefox. You can permanently enable flash for Firefox so that you don't have to enable the flash plugin everytime. To do so, launch Firefox. Next, click on the context menu button on FTV remote. Scroll down to "Settings". Next go to "Display". Next go to "Plugins". Change the option to "Enabled".
Youtube.com is a good site to test your flash plugin.

Yes! Mirroring is the one thing I've been lacking. Seems dumb I can mirror android to apple TV but not to aftv. Definetly give it a try but if it doesn't have remote support I'll need to hold off. Its inevitable I'll end up buying melee f10 pro or harmony but still havent.
And plex was a wasted 5 bucks for aftv. I use a an RPI as a server, low power, fast enough and very low price.
Opera Browser is a good choice for its lack of quirkyness compared to all other Android browsers on FireTV.
Especially since the version 27 update made it snappier!
It is a must-have in case you have trouble with another browser and get stuck.

Hi,
i have firefox installed and it is ok i dont use it much. I installed AirPlay/DLNA Receiver (PRO) and i can mirror my ipad to AFTV. You can download this free, first install black mart and then download AirPlay/DLNA Receiver (PRO) from there for free normally this app is $5 but you will get it free.
just open firefox and go to http://www.blackmart.us/ and download the APK directly to your AFTV and install it or you download the apk to your computer and transfer the apa via adb.
thanks

Very good info. Thanks. That's the one I wanted to try but didn't know if it was worth 5 bucks.
Tried Firefox and maxthon but both seem to require a 3rd party remote. Firefox seems to have more functionality with aftv remote but really awkward trying to navigate. I'm gonna do some research and pick a mini keyboard/airmouse. Thanks for all the feedback though.

I was just about to start a new thread for this! Fire TV remote doesn't cut it. Light up keyboard is VERY useful if not essential sometimes. I've also heard good things about mele f10. Wanna keep it around 30 bucks.
If anyone else has suggestions please let me know!
***checked out the k400 and it looks cool but how's it for basic navigation?--just the simple up, down select etc for fire home screen, Netflix and kodi? I see the keyboard has direction buttons but does the mouse pad work well for navigation? Does it click or is it just tap?
If I'm gonna use it I want it to replace aftv remote, not strictly use it for web browsing. Do you use it for everything?
I have the K400r,and I use it for everything.
Only issue is that some things like "7zipper 2.0" fail to back out on the 2nd press of escape, forcing you to either Alt+Tab out of it or grab your remote to hit the back button on it twice.
I am trying to use my firestick to cut cable cost some. And I was told that the Charter app lets me view all of my content, unfortunately on the amazon store I can download to android devices besides my fire stick. Is there a way around this..?

I used this to install a variety of apps to my Fire TV Stick.
sideloadfiretv dotcom
Has anyone got this to work. Side loaded on rooted Fire TV gen 1, get error code C117 when trying to watch video. Charter boxes have been down for a day now. Watching on tablets is only option right now.
Playstore app to apk converter & copy playstore links (Google search)
Download spectrum TV apk
Firetv/Fire TV Sticks:
Sideload
(Google hint: adb fire -pc- or app 2 fire -Android app-)
Install:
Mouse toggle apk
Spectrum tv apk
Android tv & Android Boxes:
Place apk on flash drive
Plug in
Get file manager
Navigate to USB drive install apk
Use mouse (USB) or get remote with mouse
A little annoying to use but works
Shield should be the same
But if you have the full playstore
Can someone get a root file manager
Copy the base apk for stectrum tv app for the shield
I want to test it on a firestick and see if it fixes the landscape issue when picking channels
Use ultimate rotation app to fix landscape problem.
Hi,
I purchased a Philips 50PUS7303/12 a few days ago and although very happy with the screen quality I was very disappointed to find that the TV doesn't have the full Play Store or the ability to sideload apps and this was the main reason for going for this Android TV as it just fitted within my budget. Can anyone offer a way to get around this limitation (Philips are shooting themselves in the foot by making it this restrictive). I wanted to install ITV Hub, All 4 and My5, along with TV Catchup as freeview is bad in my area.
Another issue I have still related to the TV, is how to get proper 'Freesat' with EPG. Most of the channels have no name and they are in no proper order. Is there any way to address this.
Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.
Regards,
Robert.
I also plan on purchasing this TV (i.e the 65") and was interested in installing apks. From what I've read on reviews on Amazon UK, you should be able to do this by enabling "unknown sources" from the Google security settings, put any .apk files that you have on a USB and use a file explorer (e.g ES File explorer) to find the USB directory and install the .apk files from there. Should be a piece of cake.
Let me know it this works as this is one of the main reasons why I am interested in buying this smart TV.
Hi jpapadami,
I tried doing that and was able to install ITV Hub, All 4 and My5, but of these apps would show on screen. Going to setting and apps I was able to see each application but was unable to open any of them. ES file explorer installed OK and I was also able to install Modbro.
Regards,
Robert.
Hi, oldish thread but I just got the same TV on a black Friday deal. However its not worth keeping the tv if I cant get itvhub and other UK catch-up apps to work.
I can side load the apps made for non TV devices, but i really want the TV versions as they work better with the remote.
Closest I can find is an xda thread from 2016 where someone pulled the apps from a fire TV device then removed the Amazon requirements from them so they would work on any Android TV device, unfortunately those apks don't work anymore. But I think that looks like the best way?
I've also had a poke around on my Sony android TV, which has all the catch-up apps linked to youview, but I can't find any apks to pull and even if I could i suspect they will be locked to Sony
You can always use aptiode for the apps and use tv app repo to link them / create shortcuts on the main menu.

Hi...
the Thread is a bit older but thats not important. To install any other Apps that are not to find in Android-Tv Play-Store is that simple as to dig in your nose xD
first go to Play-Store and install a file explorer like x-plore to your Tv.
Now you can download any App---apk with you Computer and put it on a USB-Stick or USB-HDD/SSD. Transfer the portable device with your own Hands from PC to Tv Connect the portable Device to USB on the Tv and open the file-explorer. OpenRoot of the portable Device where the apk from the App is in. Choose the apk file and install it to Tv. If you now have a custom Launcher on Tv like sideload-Launcher or ATV-Launcher. Lte your installed Apps shown in this Launcher cause in the stock-Launcher not all Apps would be listet and showing.
Thats all...that easy right.
