Want to feel what gestures can do? here's an application which will let you turn of your screen just with a swipe!! yes that's right!! All you have to do is swipe your hand over the proximity sensor (Located near the earpiece on top of the phone).
Motivation to build this app:
1) While the phone is in pocket, and you have your bluetooth headset connected, even though you can answer your call with a click of bluetooth headset button, because the screen goes on and remains on, your call may hang-up or go on hold or probably few buttons may get pressed, isn't that annoying?
2) Lot of android phones don’t turn off the screen when phone is held close ear (You may end up hanging up on someone)
3) Accidental call pickups: Since capacitive screens are sensitive to touch as well as heat, An Incoming call gets picked up automatically when phone is in the pocket (And we get obliged to speak to annoying calls)
4) Its Cool!!!
5) If you are a HD2 user, you would know the pain. Many users have replaced that hardware buttons due to usage!!!

Ok so whnat seems to happen is you can keep it always on if you keep it in an upright position but if the watch tilts to the side it will sometimes turn off. I cant say this is for sure when it turns off but it is not consistent. Sometimes the screen will stay on sometimes it will turn off.
It dims but it's still on.. Seems like a good implementation to me. Im sure it wont be long and we'll have an app that can keep the backlight on if that's what you want.
When I first powered the device on, I looked in settings and found the option to keep the screen always on. However, after I updated the firmware, that option turned into the ambient light sensor option...
So it looks like they disabled that function in the current rom
The screen does turn off if the device doesn't move at all, but even the slightest movement turns the dimmed watch face back on.

for the other 2 Wear watches, the screen always on setting had to be changed through the companion app on the phone

I think this is a bug with the 360. If you set ambient screen on, then the screen will go into a dimmed always on mode. It will stay on forever if the watch is kept in certain positions. For example, if you hold the watch vertically, it will stay on forever. But the screen goes blank if the watch is held in certain other positions. It seems to. Me like if it gets into a sideways like position akin to the way it sits in the charger, the screen will go blank.
I can't imagine this is intended behavior. Anyone seeing anything different?

First I need to explain what ambient mode really is. It is definately not always on, but it's pretty clever how it works. From my experience the watch is always on when horizontal. Vertical is a little more tricky - but 90% of the time while vertical, regardless of movement, the watch is off. The other 10% the watch detects movement that resembles walking and only turns off during that time. So far I am very happy with ambient mode. It really does know when you might look at it, and turns on instantly. I can see this being an issue if you like to remove your watch and still use it.. I do this a lot while taking tests : \
Edit - I've been testing the orientations.. Here are the positions that the screen is on and off:
ON - Any orientation where the face is correctly orientated and readable from the users perspective its on.

Thanks.. Do you know for a fact that this is intended behavior? Has Motorola explained anywhere how this is intended to work? It is different from ever other android wear device.

I would say this is definately the intended behavior. My guess is that in order to get the 12 hours they had to do this. Its kind of like a V8 sports car that wont pass minimum MPG and the manufacturer was required to install a "shift skip" essentially locking you out of 2nd and 3rd gear while putting around town to get that minimun MPG.

could you tell us why part of the watch display looks gray in the 3 OFF photos?
Seems too regular for camera flash or other light sources / reflections and if the screen really is off, it shouldnd interfere with the camera
maybe there really is a bug?

thanks for the clarification, seemed too regular to be a reflection, but was hard to tell in the small pictures
I don't have one yet so I may be wrong about this but wouldn't it make much more sense for the the light sensor to adjust the screen brightness whenever you flick your wrist or tap the screen to wake it up? This would surely improve the battery life, especially if you're in a dim environment for an extended period of time.

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking.. Are you referencing while ambient mode is on or off?
In either case, when you move your wrist up as you would with any other watch, the screen turns fully on and its bightness is adjusted via the light sensor. The only difference ambient mode makes is that when the watch is visible to the user, it is on but dimmed. Any other time e.g the watch is facing away from you, then the screen is off.

Oh, from what I'd read I was under the impression that the backlight level wasn't always adjusted by the light sensor. If it is then great.

Technically it's not always updated. There seems to be 3 different "modes" to the watch face - on, off, and ambient mode. It's kind of hard to explain, but while the screen is in ambient mode it has one setting.. dim. But it still reacts to that "looking at my watch now" movement, turns the screen to fully on (second hand begins to move, notifications are displayed), and then the light sensor will adjust accordingly. So if the watch is laying flat on a table outside in bright sunlight the screen will be on but you wont be able to see it.
So in summary, no it doesnt respond to light while in ambient mode. Which does seem to contradict the point of it being so accurate at knowing when the watch face is visible. I could see if the face always stayed on regardless, then maybe the sensor shouldn't adjust it because theres no reason for the brightness to be all the way up if you're not looking at it.

Its so weird what they have done with the brightness settings in Android Wear. There is a reason we are using Android devices vs iOS devices. The openness of the software and the customizations that come along with it. We need to have the choice of how we want our device setup.
I personally would like to have my watch screen on all the time on full brightness. Why is there no option for this? On my G Watch, im constantly having to turn my wrist further towards myself than i normally would or tap the screen to get it bright enough where i can see it properly. Due to this i'm probably going to hold off on my 360 purchase until its fixed.

Patience.. let the devs do what they do. Wear is open source, just like all Android OS's - This is why we are using Android devices vs iOS devices.

My 360 is dead when it comes to ambient mode or waking up to wrist movement/orientation changes.
This happened after some weeks of no wear, clearly something going on here as there's several reports of this around forums.
Factory reset a few times, so suspect hardware or software version issue (5.0.1).
This has been driving me crazy. My phone is locked and in my pocket. All of a sudden I start hearing key presses, and when I pull the phone out of my pocket it's on the emergency dialing screen with a bunch of random keys pressed. I've noticed that this most often happens when I'm walking and I receive a text message. I'm using an app called Mood for SMS, which pops up a little bubble dialog when I receive a text. However, sometimes the keystrokes end up as part of a new email message or reply to an old email message.
I removed all of the Android settings for recognizing devices, facial recognition, and on body recognition, yet the phone is still logging random keystrokes. Is there anything else I can turn off so that the phone will just stay locked when I lock it?
You have your lockscreen set to something like fingerprint, pin, etc? Pretty sure you can't reply to a text notification on the lockscreen unless you use my fingerprint or pin.

Do you by any chance use sweep to wake gestures? My phone kept unlocking in my pocket until I turned off the sweep up to wake gesture in EX Kernel Manager. (I'm using elementalX kernel)

So sounds like your screen is waking up. You have Always On Display turned on? Might be better if you change it to off and use Raise To Wake instead or just have it completely off. Strange though because screen stays off find while in my front pocket.

Always On is disabled. However, New Notifications is enabled (wakes screen when notification is received). So that probably explains the screen waking up from the SMS, but not the random keystrokes or the emergency dialer.

But I actually do want the screen to wake when I get a notification. Sometimes it's on my desk so that feature is helpful. I just don't know where the random keypresses are coming from or how it's getting into the emergency dialer.

Yeah it would be a big loss of a very convenient feature. The screen really should be off while in your pocket even if you keep that option on. What pocket is your phone in? You have some kind of screen protector that might be affecting your proximity sensor?
Easy way to test is cover the top of your phone with something like a piece of paper. Have a text message or anything that'll notify your phone and usually turn on your screen without that paper covering the top. If the screen still turns on, something is going on with the sensors.

Another odd thing about it.... I have the magnification option set so that so you can triple tap to zoom in. So when the phone is in my pocket and a text message comes in I'll pull it out of my pocket and the screen will already be zoomed in. I don't even know how that's possible for a triple tap to happen while it's in my pocket. Again, it's like some magic keystrokes.

It's in my left front pocket. I don't have a screen protector but I do have a Spigen rubber case around it.
I'm basically the same too with front left pocket and no screen protector. I have a variety of cases and doubt your Spigen case is a source of the issue. Can't think of anything else. [emoji53]

Hi, i have little problem with my note10 plus. During call, when i put my phone near ear, screen turns off like it should. If i move away in one second, it turn on, but if i hang phone 2 second or more, screen doesn't wake up until i push power button. Even 2 tap screen to wake up don't work. If i try *#77692# proximity sensor and light sensor work perfectly.
Which OS version?
Is power management active or any 3rd party apps recently added or uninstalled?
In Device Care under battery, only fast charging should be enabled.
In Device Care under storage, punch clean now.
Then clear the system cache from the boot menu. Don't hit factory reset!
See if this gets it. Many times clearing the system cache will cure bizarre behavior... like magic.
Make sure all critical data is backed up redundantly. Use the SD card as a data drive, this can serve as one of the backup drives.
Not saying it will need a factory reset but always be prepared to do one if needed. Androids are a very stable a platform, especially this phone but nothing is impervious.

I could be wrong, but i believe this is done to prevent accidental screen pressing while in call.

Yeah, this is normal operation. My Pie variant behaves like this however if I double tap the causes the phone screen to display.
Maybe a 3rd party app is interfering if Samsung double tap turn on doesn't work with the phone app.
Also try returning associated Samsung apps to their factory load versions... updates aren't always good
If you load the Double Tap apk you can set the volume control button for turn on.
It will also allow 2X tap for display turn off. Freeware, no ads, no internet connection... a perfect app.
unfortunately I tried everything. even installed rom using odin. On a clean system, the problem also occurred. I didn't just try to peel the foil off the screen because I paid too much for it

The screen protector isn't the cause.
I think you're describing normal operation except the screen double tap issue.
Double tap on is turned on in settings?
Is the auto screen off time set to a low value?
Disable all power management, a known trouble maker.
Occasionally I get delays when I double tap to get the phone screen back on but it generally works.
Bixby and Google assistant are disabled.
The power button is set to end calls as well... maybe that's it?
Go through phone settings and play with those options.

There's a couple work arounds, don't sweat it.
Factory resets are just wasting time; find the root cause. It's likely a settings issue.

All standby app buckets should show as active otherwise power management is active; changes can't be made here unless power management is active, which you don't want.

I turned off "List to check phone". Still turns on screen (though only to black and white) when I pickup phone.

I'm beginning to think it is by design so you can always find the finger print scanner position to just touch it and turn on.
nope, the screen should not come on at all without pressing the power button with those settings turned off...
the display options mentioned are pretty self explanatory and should not be enabled if they are set to OFF...

I quite agree. However when you have a finger print scanner under the glass and no idea exactly where it is, and it is expected a single action of placing a finger on the phone turns it on and unlocks it, you need some indication on the display where your finger needs to be. So I think they've decided to always show an indication if they detect the phone might be about to be used, and as the screen is on anyway, they might as well show some notification messages and the charge status as they might normally. The screen also comes on sliding it out of a pouch I've notice without picking it up.
If the screen didn't show any information, but just displayed the finger print icon, would it then seem to be working correctly?
Maybe if you remove the finger print unlock option, does it still turn on? I've not tried that.
Google as they are, settings don't always mean what they say!
It's a shame that Soli is gone now. I loved the AOD + Soli feature from my P4 XL that enabled you to deactivate AOD, EXCEPT if you were close to the phone, then it activated automatically. That feature was awesome. Saved battery and only gave you the information you wanted exactly when you needed them.

There is no reason why they couldn't do this now just using the proximity sensor, so if on a desk, something waving across the phone would be seen by the proximity sensor and it could turn on. I'm sure it already does something like this so it knows when it is being removed from a pocket or case. If you point another mobile phone camera at it, you can see the infrared proximity sensor is always flashing checking for things in front of it. Maybe someone has a patent on this idea so they can't do it?

Can confirm that after removing fingerprints this is no longer happening. Whether it is a bug or a "feature" connected with fingerprint unlocking, who knows...

I think this is a feature but in typical Google style they have forced this on everyone without a note in the settings to explain the behaviour. They should have disabled the option to turn off the 'turn on' on picking up option, with a note underneath saying something like "The display will always turn on when picked up when the finger print unlock is in use, this is so you can see where to place your finger to unlock.".
That would have saved us a lot of wondering. If I can come up with that, why can't Google?

The screen is dead black until I 'Tap' or 'Lift' the phone. If I disable either of the feature, it works as intended. And if I disable the both feature, the screen won't lit up until I press the power button.
FYI... I'm on the latest Build Number: SD1A.210817.036

I have Fingerprint setup.
From last 15 minutes or so, I have my phone sitting on the table and it hasn't lit up once.
