Watching FullHD films - Xiaomi Mi Max 3 Questions & Answers

I hv a Mi max 2 and when i watch Full HD films on it there r black bars on top and bottom of the screen. With Mi Max 3 does the black bars dissappear or they r still there but smaller? I'm thinking of upgrading but still hesitating.

Use mx player/pro and Stretch. Done. Mi max 3 and 2 now have full screen, lol.

No thank u i prefer watching films the way they were shot (natural aspect ratios). The way the film makers intend to show them. Streching films make everything look weird

Try it first before you knock it. You'll realize why. None of these phones are 16:9, so you'll never achieve this without stretching.

Tq opasha but everything looks taller/thinner at stretching to fullscreen w/ mx player.

I know, just need to get used to it. It works well if quality is good, but definitely better on mi max 3.

Actually, modern cinema films r mostly shot @ 21:9 whereas tv shows r 16:9. So d newer phones r more suitable for watching cinema films. However, i used MX Player's custom zoom feature to reduce the horizontal black bars and crop a bit on its sides. Its better than 'stretching' (looks way too weird).
Nevertheless i like 16:9 ratio screens better because i often browse + read on internet on landscape mode. I dont like mobile websites, too limited in options/features

Hmm, I must have got it confused with a different device. Mi Max 2 is wider, you're right.

The bars appearing for the OP on the Mi Max 2 must be related to the type of file he is playing because the Mi Max 2 should play the Full HD in full screen.

Font is not sharp

Hello,
5T is my first Oneplus phone and i really like it.
But i think, there is some problem with font. For example, when i reading emails in gmail app, the font is not sharp and have some weird ghosting effect or some outline. It is not that great when reading. This thing is also in Google Chrome, Facebook Messenger.
Is there anyone, who can see it too?
Looks fine on mine.

It's not a problem with the font, it's the 1080p screen. A 6" screen is getting pretty big for 1080p IMO. It's not that bad, but I can see a big difference between the 5T with a ppi of 401 and the Note 8 with a ppi of 521. If OnePlus decides to go bigger than 6" next time, they will have to increase the ppi.
is it as bad as it was with LG G3?

I don't see any kind of pixelation whether it's pictures or fonts whatever. They all look crisp for me and before coming to this I was using Samsung Note 4 for 2 years which has 2k display.

Just too be clear... the screen is very nice on the 5T, it's just not as good as the Note 8 or S8. But, I would prefer the screen on the 5T any day over the Pixel 2 XL. That blue shift on the Pixel was pretty bad.
Agree, no sharpness issues here, screen looks great. Pixel 2 XL screen was unusable for me, colors changed to blue with phone moving around under normal typing.

If screen is same as 5T without jelly scrolling its, fine for me, i never had issue with 5T screen for Text ghosting effects, i was sick of occasional Jelly scrolling.
I could never stand Text Over sharpening of LG G3 as well.

Well, i could never notice difference between screen quality between 1080p and 2K, last 2 k screen i used was Galaxy S7, it was fine, after that i went to iPhone 6/6s/7/8 screens, despite low resolution, it was as good as Samsung screen for me, i also used OP2,3,3T and 5 as well, only bad screen was of OP2 with washed out colours and HUGE DPI.
Now i am sadly confused between iPhone 8/8Plus and Android that is 5T. Same old bull**** issue for me. X is too expensive for me to put on a phone and keep taking care of it, not to use it freely, after spending like 1200 on it, Plus i don't want to support over pricing as well.
Hoping 5T, should come out to be good.
Hi Guys, Im seeing the same thing in my Huawei Mate 10 Pro. Funny enough no one seems to notice but for me its extremely clear coming from the Note 3.

I guess its just up to the eyes of the beholder. IMO, 1080 is not enough for a big phone. If you don't have a problem with 1080p, that's fine with me. Some people don't have a problem with a 24" 1080p computer monitor. But for me, 1440p at 24" is the bare minimum. If my GPU would push 4k at 100HZ or more, I would love to have a 4k monitor. That being said, the OnePlus 5T is still a great phone, even if it's only 1080p.

My previous mobile was an S7 Edge and the 5t screen is better, the whites are much better, the colors and the quality of the screen too and I have never seen any letter with saw teeth. So in my experience the fhd screen of the 5t is better than the Qhd screen of the S7 Edge without discussion. For this I can not agree
Cheers!

Black clipping...?????

I saw Erica's review today and the Pixek 3 XL seems to have a serious black clipping problem.
Can please anyone confirm this? I mean, anyone having it has already tried watching some Netflix series with many dark scenes (something like Luke Cage, Ozark, Daredevil, etc) and can confirm this issue?
I've already sent back my note 9 for black clipping as I do use my phone to watch several series and movies and I want to make up my mind in order to cancel my preorder before shipping.
Thanks in advance
When compared to my tv, yes it definitely does. But honestly I hadn't even noticed up until reading this... SO THANKS ALOT
Black clipping?
Yep, I notice it also. That's 2 strikes for this phone. 1 more and it's ooooouuuut

Yeah I watch a lot of both on my phone. I'm watching Lost in Space on Netflix right now and it gets pretty bad in the very dark scenes. Here is a screenshot of the Sicario 2 trailer(I couldn't take a screenshot in Netflix)...
Edit... disregard the screenshot in this post, you won't be able to see the black clipping from a screenshot uploaded by my Pixel. I took pictures of the screenshots with my iPhone and posted them below in a new post.
Edit...I just realized that you won't be able to see the black clipping from a screenshot let me take a photo with my iPhone Xs Max. I'll post the pictures in a new post
Here are the photos of the screen shots, they are both from YouTube trailers. One is from Sicario 2 and the other is from Lost in Space.

Are you on Adaptive Colors, because I was using an app called display tester. Did a black saturater test on Normal, was able to get to box 7 at 100% switched to Adaptive and could see up to box 5 at 100% . Not sure it that would help.

To be fair, my iPhone Xs Max also has a little black clipping when watching these trailers in YouTube. I'd say that the Pixel on the Natural color setting has no more than my iPhone. But for some reason, the Natural color setting didn't make Netflix any better. My iPhone has no black clipping whatsoever in Netflix. I wonder if it's because the iPhone supports HDR, does the Pixel 3?
I just tried Black Panther on Netflix with my Pixel set to Natural colors, and there is all kinds of clipping/ crushing going on, black, brown, and blue. Everything is messed up in that movie. If anyone has Netflix, try watching the Black Panther for about 5 minutes starting from about the 2 minute mark when the 2 guys are in an apartment. If your display looks good, please let me know.

As some else wrote Pixel 3 XL is HDR capable.....but maybe Netflix app still doesn't recognize it as such.
Do you see HDR besides Black Panther title into movie description page or just HD? This would tell you whether Netflix app is recognizing it as HDR capable device. I'm assuming that Black Panther is an HDR title on Netflix.
PS: thanks for your tests...I'm looking forward to read what others have to say about your finding on black panther

What exactly is black clipping and crushing?
I tested with a video on YouTube and with the screen set to "Boosted" I could only see down to level 23 of the video but with the screen set to "Adaptive" I could see down to level 20. Adaptive mode seems to help a little. I think the reference black level on the video was 16.

When I originally posted that I had a lot 9f black clipping, I had my display on 100% brightness. I turned on adaptive brightness, which lowered it to about 80%, almost all of the black clipping went away. This is also how my 4k HDR TV works, so I guess it's not as big of a deal as I thought it was. However, my iPhone xs max can be on 100% brightness and have very little to no black clipping.

VR headset compatible OnePlus 7 Pro ?

Hi, I have a Homido v1, and it is too much small for the oneplus 7 pro !
Does someone could recommend me a VR headset compatible ? (size and maybe resolution)
I think it could be a really good mobile for VR games.
Thanks.
Hi, I bought the homido v2 because it fits.
But the screen size is too big for the lenses, I have to zoom out the content to be good, but not all games have this feature (tested with fibrum, there is the function "correct lenses").
It's strange that there is no VR headset compatible, this is not the only 6.6' screen size.
I think it's the aspect ratio that's the issue.
Ok, so there are just 2 solutions, we wait for a compatible headset, or maybe there is an app to change the ratio ?

Thanks! I wait for your feedback.
I already saw this one, I think they updated, because now it's: 4 - 6,5 inches. that's good.
But the max size of the phone is: 163mm * 83mm, the onplus 7 pro is 162.6mm, so it should be fine, but I would like to know if it fits with a case.
And also what about the comfort ? The phone is pretty heavy, so with the homido v2 it pushes on the nose.
Thanks!
Google daydream VR headset is working great with 7 pro. You'll need to install daydream enabler module over magisk, and limit display to 60Hz.

Size is of no concern at all. It's made to hold large phones such as pixel XL. Software is not supporting 90hz. It will work, but you'll be bothered by some pixelation issues.

advantage of using 4K screen resolution on Note 10 plus?

Hi guys, well I want to ask you smart question and I really don't know the answer.
I got myself used Note 10 plus and because of the battery issue I switched to 1080p resolution to save some battery.
Then I opened some webpage like lets say webcam site chaturbate.
From what I know on monitors, higher resolution on monitor gives more web content on screen,so on my 1440p monitor I can see more webcam models on screen compared to 1080p monitor.
I thought then it's the same with phone screens, increasing resolution to 4K,I'll see more webcam models then 2 cams per line which was not the case, switching screen to 4K I haven't seen any difference.
So is it suppose to be like that,or I'm missunderstanding something here?
Why won't it work like on PC monitors/screen?
How can we take advantage of 4K on phones,in my case on Note 10 plus?
Does it have advantage switching to 4K when viewing websites, besides videos ofc?
Even when watching videos I doubt anyone (any human eye) will notice difference on 6.8 " screen with 1080p vs 4K on Note 10 plus.

"4K" or WQHD+ on the note does not really relate to extra space on the screen like computer monitors. as the computer monitor scale back the size of the Icons and increase perceived desk space (depending on monitor size and max resolution capabilities) as the UI on smartphones must be readable the gain is barely perceivable. You can adjust the size of the icon to make it look like you gained some space but it wouldn't be accurate.
The real difference and depending on you, you may or may not perceive it, is on the pixel density.
In 1080p the Note has a certain pixel density, when you shift to "4K", you have a higher count of stacked pixel density. It looks better with some content that supports it but its sort of a cheat. The screen is not actually 4K, kind of like the 7nm vs 10 nm wafers in Intel Vs TSMC foundries. TSMC says it's 7 nanometers and intel 10, but they pack around the same transistor density, the names are mostly marketing.
You wont notice a big, if any, difference due to our own limitations (eysight), you can get a better picture of the issue looking up (Googling) "Full HD vs Quad HD" from the Oled Association.
They break it down a bit ...
Oh okay.Thank you for kind explanation.

Doesn't seem to use any or just slightly more battery so I guess I'll sample it a while.
Forgot about the WQHD setting.
The 10+ still has one of the best displays. Lots of issues with the high refresh rate displays it seems.
Well, I barely notice a very little difference, very little indeed, and, mostly when viewing photos or videos taken with the best resolutions, for everything else, all look just the same

Went back to FHD. WQHD uses more battery (probably about 1%@hr more) and didn't make a difference I noticed doing what I normally do.
It's cool that it's there like many of the other 10+ options.

Question Over sharpened Mi 11x Amoled display

Hi, I recently bought mi 11x and have been using it for past couple of days. What I have noticed is that the shaprness of my phone's display is very high and because of that everything looks really bad on the screen... Like artifacts around black text on white background or anything running in low resolution... Is this normal or there's any problem with my display? Should I get my device replaced? Is anyone else is facing similar issue with mi 11x/poco f3/redmi k40 ? Is this MIUI issue and will it be solved if I install custom rom?
what phone did you use prior to mi 11x ?
PS: there is no such thing as sharpened display

We don't have settings for sharpness indeed but manufacturer does . They can fine tune the display as they like...
Different phones can have different feels to them regardless of pixel density or panel type

Please refer below images. I have tried to capture the text fringing and white artifacts (light shadows) around black text with my old phone's camera.
I hope these images will give you better idea of what issue i am facing right now with AMOLED display.
The outcome required with this discussion would be to check if there is something wrong with my phone's display or this is generally normal with AMOLED displays.
And if there is some problem with sharpness, do i need to get it replaced???
P.S. - I have tried to capture the issue.. i don't know the pictures are doing the justice to reflect the issue but all these mentioned halo effects and text fringing are quite visible to the naked eyes.
My poco f3 also has this problem
this is a common problem with pentile AMOLED panels it seems. I am not sure why this still exists in 2021 though. Maybe Xiaomi and other Chinese brands are using low-quality panels. I checked a few phones. Newer Samsungs don't have this issue.
From what I searched it did popup in S3 when Samsung started using these panels first.
I checked Realme GT ME and MI 11x both and both had the same issue, whereas some old Vivo phones, MI A3, Samsung S5 were perfectly fine.
I think it's just cost-cutting from these brands to use lower-quality E4 panels.
wow... looking to my F3.... i see normal... cant see that very small haloing effect.
Try it with black text on white or white text on black also on setting menu...
Maybe my eyes not good anymore...
Your concerns are absolutely valid and the commentors claiming sharpness doesn't exist are noobs. I've had the same issues with Xiaomi phones. It's a little like a lottery. For the same model, some devices can get a high quality display and some units get a lower quality display where you can see it to be overtuned or artifacts.
Or there could be another possibility as widely discussed, Xiaomi takes displays from multiple manufacturers but ends up using the same fine tuning values for all the units of the model, for Eg Poco F3. As a result, your friend can have the exact same device and a perfect look display while you are left with a shady display with issues.
