Can you make voice calls on the UK 4G Version? - Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 Questions & Answers

Has anyone who has the 4G UK version of the Tab S4 got any info on whether using a standard nano sim from my phone would allow voice calls and to receive SMS messages? Ignoring the fact it is a 10inch tablet, just asking if it is possible.
Thanks in advance, I have looked to try and get this info but not really found a clear Yes or No, and its the UK version I am interested in

Yes, you can make and receive call as well as sent and receive text messages on UK LTE model.

So there is a dialler already part of the Android platform on the device out the box?
I am so tempted to get this and replace my S9+ with it for daily use (excluding going for a night out )
A good set of bluetooth headphones for taking and making calls and your away.
Thanks for the reply, I am now really going to consider getting this bad boy now! What case are you using?

Yeap there is dialer. I'm not using any case at the moment as there isn't anything I like. I'm thinking of Skinomi skin but I'm not interested in their screen protector which is a part of full body kit and I don't like paying for something I'm not going to use. I'm hoping for UAG to release case and dbrand to release skin.

Dual Sim Question?

Hi All,
I need to be able to have to incoming lines on one phone (if possible)
I'm fine making all calls on one line but is it possible to receive calls and txts on 2 sims simultaniusly without having to tell the phone to switch?

no can do.
the best you're going to get is to either get a new generation dual sim thing which has built in software to swap the active sim every x minutes.
or
set up call forwarding on one sim to forward to the other. then you'll get the txts etc as soon as the auto change takes place in a few mins
Thanks I'll see if T-Mobile still offer a priority line.
Back in the days when they were one2one I had a great package with two incoming phone numbers one the one line so you could forward all calls strait to vm effectively turning the phone of in a restaurant while still getting calls from the sitter or office etc...
Didn't see the point then but could really make use of it now lmao
hehe one2one.. i remember them.. my first mobile contract was with them.. over 10 years ago. ouch.
You might want to take a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=273387&highlight=dual+sim
before you get a duals sim adaptor, should you decide to take this approach.
Maybe read the thread from back to front, though.
As has been pointed out before, there is no option available to be reachable on thwo sims at the same time.
Bye,
Chris
The other option might be Internet calling with the new WM6..
Not sure what you need the other number for.. and there are a lot of limitations with this.. but it might do what you want..
Nice Avatar btw.. Can't wait for the new season.. only one more day!!
Thanks Guy's, I'm wating to see if T-Mobile can sort this for me at the moment as this is the only practical solution.
I serve two masters!
As I am self employed all my clients/suppliers have my current number, however, I now also work full time in a school but their number is witheld. I often get calls from suppliers when I'm at work (numbers also witheld). It would be much more convenient to divert all calls to this number directly to voice mail and then give the school my 'priority number' as this is the best way for them to contact me accross the large campus. But I refuse to carry and pay for two phones, if they don't like me answering the phone at work tough!
How come you get the new series in the states on the same day as us when we have to wait for all your cool new programs?

Note 8.0 LTE version

Would it possible to hack this device for phone calls?
Does it have the needed hardware/radio for traditional cellular calling (not voip or volte)?
A friend of mine told me that At&t will assign you a number with your SIM, would they try to roadblock you from using it to make calls?
Just wondering if anyone else is interested in attempting this.
mine is hk lte version and it supports phone call out of the box. So isn't at&t's?

I keep asking the same questions, I know when Samsung announced the Note 8.0s they promised ATT customers a converged phone and Tablet, the "Phablet" as they so mwere marketing it, then I think when ATT and Samsung saw how much they were going to lose in revenue from people doing away with redundant "iDevices" they paniced and screwed over the customers and removed the dialer from the firmware.

I'm sure someone here could make it work as far as the device goes, but At&t holds the power in the end. Their model doesn't come with a phone plan, just a data plan. This is likely where it would fail.
could you edit your post title and specify the model number since there is multiple LTE version of the Note 8 please.
hi ,
i dont own one , yet , but my other galaxy devices i have google voice installed and then talkatone setup and it can make and recieve calls via google voice number , its voip but it works over data and wifi , so you can use your google voice number just like a normal cell number ,
check it out , i know its not the exact solution you were looking for but it does work , i cut my bill in half over 65$ taken off by lowering my minuets , forwarding all incoming calls to my google voice, and taking off text messages , you still need minuets though , the forwarding costs 1 min per call and someones ALWAYS gonna call your previous number until you get everything moved to GV

Which model? A few Tab 3's are voice capable (without flashing), as is the international Note 8.
I'm curious about this as well. I have a t217a for ATT. I was under the impression that the gsm versions were all capable. I know I am boot loader locked...

I havent heard of any development. but if the hardware is capable then i was wondering along with everybody else, could we enable the dialer and use it could it be reverted back to the android 2.2 to enable that part of the radio? do you have any info on this? I know the 8 inch international version has it,

I don't know much about this device even though I own one.
There's no normally placed earpiece so I can't imagine using it as a phone, hell, a tablet would look pretty stupid held to my face - which reminds me, no proximity sensor in it....
Revert back to 2.2? This device comes with 4.2 out of the box. No way to downgrade versions that I can see.

I got rid of my phone service a long time ago and just use voip now on with my samsung note with the tmobile 5gb $30 plan, but i switched over to att for this tablet and have been using it with voip with no problems call quality is excellent, speakerphone is crystal clear but i like using my headphones i use grooveip so all my calls to all phones in the us is free. this thing makes a great phone. but knowing that the hardware is there it would be nice to just enable it and have the regular android dialer, the reason i said to revert it to 2.2 was because people have been doing that to enable the specific gsm frequency radio hardware on certain devices.
I think you are not really understanding what we are talking about, true it does not have a built in earpiece like a traditional phone, but it does have bluetooth for a headset and it does have a headphone jack for headphones and speakers for speakerphone and it has the gsm radio hardware for it, im using it right now as my phone using voip with att 4g network and it works great, someone calls my USA telephone number from a phone and my tablet rings, i answer and it works great as a phone..... but it would also be nice to have the regular gsm phone service active on it as a back up and for texting. and 911 so yes it works great as a phone now. we were just trying to flash it to enable the gsm radio
So you are not being helpful at all. because you dont seem to have knowledge regarding the issues we are referring to, and correct you would not hold it to your head because it has no earpiece but that does not matter and also it might look ridiculous to you but others might not really give a sh** what people think.
so to simplify even more , why dont you just stop discouraging people from trying to make things better
Im with @mentalmike99 on this if your not trying to further the discussion in a positive way no need to post. as for Groove IP I never could get it set right to work correctly so I use Zoiper or OBiON with my G-Voice # and they both work great. As far as sms use the G-Voice app or Hangout's now does sms as well. Just an Idea for you to look into for sms.
Hope we can get this figured out. You couldn't use that $30 5GB T-Mo plan on the AT&T GTAB 3 if it were unlocked? If not is the plan tied to the imei & not the Sim card? I was thinking about going to that plan is why I am asking. Thanks
I am using tablet voice with my Google voice number. It works, but I'm not real impressed with it. I only use it on speaker. Having the full on phone active would be a he he plus for me as well, but I'm wondering if its going to happen because of the bootloader being locked still. I can't really speculate about the older tabs because I didn't have one, but I thought the hardware was there and just needed to have a modem fw flashed to enable it. It seems like the ATT version is going to be uncharted territory for a while, but I'm hopeful...

the tmobile plan is awsome but i had to change to ATT because tmobile's cell tower is messed up in my home area so i havent been able to get data for like 2 months here so i finally had to give up on them. trust me i would have loved to stay with them cause i think ATT really sucks, good service technically but price wise no way!. thanks for the info on the other voip services because grooveip works good but it keeps loosing the incoming connection so i sometimes cant receive calls unless i exit and restart the program
As for using it on Tmobiles network, i dont think it would be a problem as long as Tmobile had "refarmed" their tower in your area to the LTE freq. if not then I believe you can only get 2g , not sure on all of that.
Just so you know you will need to get a new tmobile sim from walmart or at least tell them you got it from walmart to activate on the $30 plan.
i really hope we can get the phone part going cause thats the only thinkg i miss about using my samsung note

I bought 4 sims Directly from T-Mobile awhile back well actually I didn't "BUY" them they were free. All I read about it was that you have to Activate online to get that plan which is not an issue for me cause that's all I do is Activate Customers online all day long its just thru my dealer portals lol I guess its kinda different but don't tell anyone shh lol kinding anyway well thats good to know that it should work & sorry to hear about ur tower issue. The coverage map says they have "4G" in my area & people that have stopped buy with T-Mobile 4G enabled phones get 4G here & some of the T-Mo MVNO's I sell get 4G so I think im good to go on that front unless they are selling hspa+ as 4G still then I may b alittle disappointed idk we will see.
So what is the "UNLOCKED" comment about? was that about the Bootloader or Sim Part? If you want a Good site to get SIP info for G-Voice that will work in any SIP App let me know I'll point u toward a site that u can get it free I gave a "donation" & got the GSM band but you can use other bands I didn't see a difference honestly I just think DEV's & Other that do stuff like need paid for their HARD WORK they put in. Diff topic all together I know
Locked is for boot loader, meaning if there are any packages/firmware that needs to be flashed the ATT people may be out of luck. Sprint on the other hand is not boot loader locked. Sim unlocked is something else, mainly moving to a different provider with existing equipment.

Ok so I got to wondering if it is possible to use this as a phone. Im not a programmer but I went into the Build.prop file & it looks like the phone part of this device is enabled. I took a screen shot & put some red arrows by what I am talking about. I don't have any clue if those help or mean anything but I would think that phone enabled is a good sign.

Why not?
I use this tablet primarily for voice calls, sms texts, net surf, games, etc etc just like normal android phones out there.
got earpiece at the topside (chrome holes thingy), so when making voice calls, we don't need to use external speakers, just hold it just like normal phones do. It also got proximity sensor.
mine is tab 3 7.0 model t211, GSM HSPA, 16gb.
got to admit tho, earpiece voice not loud, had trouble hearing especially at crowded and noisy places.
looks weird placing voice calls with this huge thing, everyone is looking at me lol.
NO Ear Speaker on a T211 that I know of Included link also

I don't know how to edit the info up top I stand Corrected before you chew into my A**.
Is that the International Version? I did a search on it & didn't see the Speaker till after I put my post up then I seen this pic on phone arena & I see the 1 with the speaker ur talking about but haven't seen it anywhere for sale I don't believe. Where did u get it & what carrier is for? AT&T?
Most of us are using bluetooth or wired headsets & using our Google Voice with 1 of many app's & ways to use the setup. I personally have 3 diff apps I on my tab that I could use at anytime but none of them are a "Great" or "Perfect" solution to a stock dialer setup like a normal phone. I'm willing to pay a little bit & help with whatever I can to get this done. If theres a dev out there that wants to look into this & uses hangouts hit me up at snyderswireless if you need a file pulled from the tab or whatever. It would be nice to have a stock dialer that we could use.
I know i'm thinking about getting rid of this tab & getting either a Note 8(for the Phone) or Nexus 7(leaning toward this) on T-Mo but haven't made up my mind yet on what I want to do.
the OP original question is IF he buys the tab3, then will phone/mms work.
and the answer is "depends" on which model he buys.
Some work right out of the box with your existing sim out of your smart phone.
Some wont.. rule of thumb would be the price point.. and the screenshot of the device..
I say if its close to 300$ and higher, it may have the capabilities built in..
cheaper tab3's, (and if the phone icon) doesnt show on the home screen..May or May not.
We should start to list the models we have and let him know what we do to get them to do what he wants..
Tab3 - 8" T-315 international version. Phone/data/mms are built in from the get go. just take the sim out of my smartphone and stick it in the tab.

Making and receiving phone calls using eSIM

How are those with the LTE version able to make and receive phone calls in a "standalone" like version. Sprint agent claims that is impossible with this watch, but yet charges an arm and a leg to send "texts and receive data" WTH is that?

I found out just yesterday that Sprint doesn't support the ability to receive calls and text to the watch while away from your phone. Im a bit confused as to why they would 1) Sell me thw watch when that feature was the ONLY reason I was interested in purchasing this thing and 2) then sell me a service plan for a feature they dont even support. Extremely upsetting. The standalone feature does allow me to listen to music to Spotify using only the watch but not sure that alone is worth an extra monthly cost.
I'll be cancelling the service and sticking to my Garmin for fitness tracker and maybe using the Samsung as a daily watch.

if the lte version of the watch is properly activated on the carriers side then calls can be done when phone is off. texts and emails dont work.
if phone is on AND connected remotely, then texts and emails work.
this is a carrier gimmick to force you to have 2 plans. because everything would work with just the watch. if you can brows the internet in standalone mode then emails should work aswell. if you can make and receive phone calls then texts should also work in stand alone mode as well. just an other proof on how greedy carriers are.
also never listen to what they say. 60% of the time they give you false information and miss guide clients.

but i mean if you only have a watch and think of using it standalone LTE, you cant do anything. you need a phone on the same provider to activate the line on the watch. plus if no phone, no texts and emails....
I don't believe that to be true with this plan. With their "Digits" plan, yes, but this one no. I have heard that you can get it activated in the store using the reps phone, then it works just fine. I will try to verify it this weekend and report back.

of course u can probably still use bluetooth but ull never get that number/line reactivated. im pretty sure they made the watch and phone be an obligatory tether with the carrier if u want to use LTE. its evil.
No the watch just needs to get the TMo settings, then works independently. If you have a TMo phone you can do it yourself.

yeah of course if you have both services on your account. but was just putting out there if you just buy a galaxy watch LTE and want to use it stand alone, ure screwed.
I don't know what you guys are talking about with tmo, I just got the the Galaxy Watch (R805U) from them and with or with out the phone, it acts the same. Can email, call, text, browse and such.
The way it works is the watch has a sim card (Called a esim. They function the exact same as normal sim card except it's a chip instead of a card.) It provides the LTE functions of the phone. Next it gets a Paired Digits number so it links both the devices numbers together so when one rings, they both ring even though they have their own number.
From the tmo website
All your existing T-Mobile numbers are now DIGITS lines. You can use them for free on any compatible internet-connected device via the DIGITS app or on phones with the DIGITS functionality built in.

Yes, that's for T-Mobile. My watch is on Sprint and paying $15 to receive only stand-alone texts is outrageous. They continue to say that the watch needs a software update that provides VoLTE, but nobody seems to know when that will, IF EVER, happen.
stand alone activation
can the standalone feature be activated by a non-samsung phone? I currently purchased the watch and is activated by the carrier aswell (vodafone numbersync) but the app is telling me that my phone is not compatible with the watch.

But I haven't reached out to them about this text message.
But here is the list https://www.att.com/idpassets/images/support/wireless/Devices-Working-on-ATT-Network.pdf

I'm gonna ride the wave and pretend I didnt' even get a phone from AT&T and see just how long I can keep using my Mate 20x here in the USA on ATT.
If only 16:9 or 16:10 phones would come back. But looks like lame kitkat phones are here to stay. :/

Funny you mention this as a week ago I stumbled upon a thread "boycotting" the slim "cigarette" phones possessing aspect ratios greater than 16:9. From what I had gathered from reading through user's complaints, about 97% favored the re-adoption of the classic wide AR of phones while disfavoring (with some expletives) these Malboro cigarette phones.
In my opinion, in order to please certain audiences (that would be us) phone companies should at least provide 2 phone flavors, slim and wide. Personally I wouldnt mind creating a fb campaign if you guys would like to join that protest.

I actually did 2 months ago when they just shut my phone off completely. Spoke with a cool rep who turned it back on.
But I haven't reached out to them about this text message.

My best advice to you if you really want your mate 20x to remain your keepsake is to swap networks to another gsm which would be a smart move by paying a similar price

Me too. I mean, if companies were smart, one could bring up at least one model 16:9 and have the whole market of people looking for that aspect ratio !

Ok guys I have created a facebook page. Keep in mind that this is the first time I have ever created a fb page regarding a company. Note also, I'm not a social media person so bear with me. That said, I strongly encourage suggestions as to how best to make it look right and communicate the right message to the company and our audience. It is still a work in progress. Please don't hesitate to add your opinions.
I need 24 likes on the fb page before I can add a username according to fb rules.
Let me know what you think!
Stop Samsung
Stop Samsung. 1 like. This is a campaign to compel Samsung Electronics to manufacture wide phones again. Unfortunately, today's narrow phones have replaced wide phones leaving consumers disappointed...
www.facebook.com
EDIT--
On the fb page the link is in chinese for some strange reason although I'm not chinese and reside in USA. If anyone here can suggest how to fix that do let me know. Thanks.
Hi guys. A few of you have reacted favorably to my fb page on urging samsung to resurrect the wide aspect ratio. However, I'm new to making fb pages. If you want to submit some ideas to me on how to reach a greater audience or enhance the page to convey our message better, please do so. Thank you.
Getting back to the initial point of this thread, my phone was turned off today by AT&T in the United States. I spoke with AT&T customer service. They indicated that even though the EVR-L29 is a 4G LTE phone, it handles voice calls over a 3G network. There is supposed to be a setting on the device to switch the phone to 4G LTE calling (VoLTE.) However, when I checked my settings, the switch was not there. I posted in another thread on XDA about this situation; but have not heard back. In the meantime, has anyone found a solution? I was told that all of these devices would be turned off permanently in February as the 3G network will be dismantled. I'm hoping to find a solution before then because I really don't want to let this phone go. Otherwise, are there any suggestions for other larger (7") screen phones that do 4G LTE calling on US bands supported by either AT&T or T-Mobile? Thanks.

What bothers me is that cricket, H2O, etc... Which are all on the AT&T network have not been told they need to get a LTE voice phone.
My parents are in cricket with OnePlus unlocked phones. My sister is in H2O.
Business as usual for carriers that use AT&T towers so what the **** is going on at AT&T?

The sad thing is that when I tested a TMobile sim card the option to switch to VoLTE shows up!

Really? If that's the case, I will simply switch to T Mo. I have no allegiance to a carrier.

Yeah I was going to do that but then my wife wanted to upgrade phones and I kind of wanted the better cameras of the S21 Ultra. Plus I never felt the Mate 20x was that big anyway (compared to what I had before). Still hoping for the return of the 16:10 phones one day or better foldable ones
Anyway, at least at this time, I dont see a problem with Tmobile and the Mate 20x.
