Q & A huh? Okay I have a question, about the new format here. What the heck? - About xda-developers.com

Yeah, um. I don't know how to say this without sounding offensive. But the new format this page has. SUCKS! Oh yeah, I gotta ask a question. Alright, here goes. Why is it that I can enter something in the search bar here up to the right, and get NOTHING on a subject that I know for sure is here on XDA? I don't get it, and suddenly feel retarded everytime I try to use it since. It's a good thing I have a buncha bookmarks on my PC or I'd get totally lost within your search parameters. Believe me I already have more than a few times. Yeah, I'm obviously frustrated with it enough to write this little note for all you Admins, Moderators, whoever it is thats running things around here. Look, I should be able to enter something into the search bar and find it. But someone decided to change something that wasn't broke to begin with and now it's being difficult! Take this for an example. I'm researching a project I want to start. So, usually I would first start out in the search bar. Now go ahead, I dare ya! Enter this: Samsung Galaxy S Relay. That's an "exact" search parameter. Again with the no offense but, can any one of you tell me why I get directed to some page not even related? Where'd it lead me too? How to Root Any Device. Please fix your search parameters!

Sorry you're having trouble, but I get relevant search results using Samsung Galaxy S Relay.
Try clearing your cache? A different xda theme? Or to test, try another browser?
You can browse the devices section too, https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s-relay-4g
Good luck! :good:

From my tab, this is vastly different. I have to say, impressive compared to what I see on my pc. I'll clear cache. Thanks.

Next to the search bar , there's a button called "search plus" , click on it and you'll have the right search bar ( the little one you were using is to search between article from XDA Portal)

Okay, I'm back for a follow up, because this seems to be an obvious difficulty and I'll bet I'm not the only one that may be having issues with this. It's a navigation thing about the current format I see here on XDA. I noticed it a few weeks ago and it's not my cache. When I'm on my tablet I can navigate fine, but when I come here on my PC it's another story, and it's very frustrating. That's why you got this question before you in such a way. You guys who may understand it having set it up know how to get around. As I mentioned before it used to be fairly easy, now it's stupid not to belittle you. The problem is that it has suddenly become difficult to search for things in a normal maner. I use the search bar, which should dirrectly link me to what I am "specifically" looking for and let's put aside the search plus for the moment. If I'm searching for something that I know is there and I type in certain words that should bring me right to it, my question is, why aren't they! I'm getting redirected to some page, often of no relevance. And here's where I'll bet this is happening to others. So what's going on? There's a problem with your search bar, and I'm letting you know it's kinda frustrating. I can navigate through here with other ways, that's not a problem. I got some bookmarked, subscribed to, ect. The issue is that the search bar in itself is broken! Whatever you guys did to it, I saw it, pointing it out! Now fix it please. This might help. I noticed a difference about two weeks ago. Not sure what it is or was. I even cleared out from my PC anything that would suggestively lead to it being my PC settings. Being a good enough percentage to say it's not, it's therefore XDA.
On a side note for all you Admins and Mods. I've been coming here over 10 years now, I got questions and suggestions. But right now my suggestion is to please eliminate some obvious confusion I've noticed that affects an average user to navigate through your search areas.

Oh! Okay, there's the sudden difference!
[QUOTE( the little one you were using is to search between article from XDA Portal)[/QUOTE]
Wow. Really? Let me ask you something about what's that all about and why did this change and for what possible reason. And then why isn't there some notice the the search bar is no longer effective as it's says it is. I'll point for you guys that the search bar says QUOTE; Type device or find apps, ROMs & more. It does not say, "This is where you go to find stuff barely relevant to what you're searching for". Does it! Sorry that this may sound offending buuut. Bad words! To me, the search bar suddenly became a joke, and a bad one at that! Articles are nice but that's not what I was looking for. And in no way was I expecting to end up there.
Okay, so here's a basic question. let's put this on the table so to speak. I don't know why you put a link to articles in the search bar in such a way to begin with. It doesn't really make sense to me. Especially with your nifty new format of where everything is, except articles I'm going to guess. So you put them in the search bar with no notice of. Can you explain all that to me? Cuz right now I'm sorry to admit, I'm kinda laughing at this. I can just imagine all you went through, even deciding on how to change the old format to what I see now. It's good. However, when it comes to the search bar, whatever idea you went with. It's one that didn't notify anyone that the search bar isn't what it says it is~!

Ignoring your saltiness, why dont you use google and append each search with xda..

You seem to be angry and it's a pity. Did you try the suggestion provided by RaiZProduction in a previous post? Does the Search Plus button (see my screenshot attached) allow you to find what you are usually looking for on XDA Forum?

You might want to step back a second and read carefully!

I'm far from angry. But check this out. This is the Q & A section is it not? So i'm askinfg a question about a difference I noticed and the A's I'm getting are a joke! Really? Hey Wood Man? You're deflecting. Step off unless you got something relevant to say. To those of you at XDA I now have a minor complaint! You people need to read what I said. I said I noticed a difference with the search bar and could someone tell me whats wrong with it. The answer I got was a confirmation that the search bar was not functional as it says it is and that's it. So. Mr Wood Man. Did I follow the suggestion you mentioned? Ahem! Are you asking to get put down blatantly or what? I made a post, RaiZProduction made a suggestion, what may I ask you is the post after that? Mine! A follow up. Before you decide to jump in there, you might wanna inform yourself better.. This here Q & A asked, "Rather than sending a PM to an individual Moderator, please feel free to ask questions in need of Moderator or Admin assistance. We will all be monitoring this thread, and someone will reply without much delay." Well, I obviously came to the right place didn't I? Everyone has a personal preference and I used the search bar a lot.

OK, I'll stop this here.
Answers were given, some with ideas, others saying all is fine for them. And also your opinion on the search is noted. However, it seems to work for everyone else, so not sure what more to say.
And honestly, your aggressive posts are getting a bit much, so I'll end this before lines get crossed. I suggest a more respectful approach in the future Sir. :good:

"Use the search" is NOT CONSTRUCTIVE!!!

You know, while I realize that it can be annoying as hell when someone asks about the Touch Plugin, SMS threader, insert your whatever here, especially when there's a thread on that very thing about three lines down from the top, responding to a thread by saying "Use the search function, noob," really doesn't help a whole lot. I just spent half an hour pouring over about 30 god-damned threads filled with irrelevant bullsh!t and flame wars about how the original poster should use the search function. Well you know what? I DID use the search function, and ended up getting post after post telling me to do so. Every time we respond to a post without answering it, it shows up later to screw someone over who's actually been doing what they should. So please, if you must tell some new-comer to search before posting, at least follow it up by telling him where to find his answer, so it doesn't affect the rest of us later.
Alternatively, perhaps the mods could delete these threads entirely. And while they're at it, if they could improve the search feature, that'd be great too, because it totally sucks right now. Can't search "SMS" or "3G" or anything else under three letters, which can be kind of a big deal around here. Doesn't have quotation function. Lots of room for improvement.
Wow. Looks like you got it all figured out now.
You're right, the integrated search kinda blows. Try this one

2 letters, 3 letters, quotes, you name it. It's a sticky in the 'Hermes' forum. But should be in all of the forums IMHO.
BTW, make sure you include Hermes in the search term to get Hermes specific results.

Don't worry... It's 3am in my time, and US Public Schools isn't much better!
I have to say that its not just this forum that people insist on stating the obvious e.g. use the search.
I'm a firm believer in the philosophy of if you haven't got anything constructive or useful to say then don't say it.. e.g. don't be a smart @rse, don't post "use the Search" if it winds you up then ignore it and look away...

WM6

does anyone know if or could i have the start menu on the bottom? that would make it feel more like a PC.....
No.
Use Wisbar Advanced Desktop for that
What a wonderfully non-descriptive subject line.
It says absolutly nothing and gives no clue what the post is about.
It forces us to actualy open the message and read it to have any idea what the issue, question, or information actualy is.
A new low point has been reached.
To answer your question. Two ways come to mind to move the menu to the bottom so its more like a PC.
Ignoring the fact that, if this was actualy done, the softkeys would now be in the wrong place for the hardware keys and that this question doesn't have anything in particular to do with Windows Mobile 6.
1) turn the phone upside down
2) buy a PC and use the phone as a modem.
Those are the only ways I can think of.

deach01 does have a point, though. How many of us have time to actually read every single thread? I certainly don't. The only reason I read this one is because I was tempted to make a post similar to what deach01 said. If someone has a question, and they'd like to have people read the question and respond to it, PUT A REASONABLE SUBJECT on the message!
I can only think of two reasons why someone would post in a WM6 forum a subject that says "WM6" - and neither one of them is very complimentary.
The two biggest problems with public forums like this (as I see it) is A) People asking the same question over and over without looking through previous posts to see if it has already been answered, and B) People using vague or "catchy" subject lines, like "WM6" or "PLEASE GOD HELP ME!".
Well, now that I've broken one of my main rules for forum posting (i.e. keep on topic) I'll go back to work. I just wanted deach01 to know that he isn't alone in his frustration with this sort of nonsense.
Brian.
You actually can turn one of your softkeys to launch the start menu. Here's a few options:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=283185
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=328635
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=279544
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=253613

Just a thought.

I have been trolling the forums for years and have spent 1000's of hours
reading and learning and searching...
mostly searching...
I was just wondering. How taxing would it be to have links
in the forums to entries in the wiki detailing what a given subject is all about?
similar to Tomboy notes in Linux.
where no special taging in the post needs to be made.
any word that has a wiki entry would automatically link to the article.
for instance:
while reading a forum entry about flashing a ROM, there is talk about
HARDSPLs, RADIOs, CID Unlockers, Nand, HaRET, Compcache, different
versions of android Donut Cupcake Eclair etc.... Tinboot, Flash,
CustomRUU.exe the list could go on forever.
Being able to click on the word that is of interest and lead them to a
stationary section for an answer(such as a wiki), may keep the "Stupid" or
repetitive questions to a minimum and help clear up the boards.
Instead of re-explaining how to do something every time a new visitor to the
site decides to ask noob questions, a noob would see something they don't
understand and then click on that word that links them to an article that
best describes it.
the problem is that stickies don't always stay up. good explanations don't
always have their own thread, and searching the forums usually just brings
up posts of people using those words in a sentence but not necessarily
explaining in detail what it is about or how to use it.
often there are very good posts that explain in detail certain subjects.
and if you search for them you will find them.
but you will never get rid of "Lazy" people that don't want to search for hours
reading countless numbers of non-helpful or incomprehensible jibberjabber.
and its not always a matter of being lazy. sometimes it is just damn near
impossible to find what you are looking for.but it is there....
it has just got to be.
Also, if this is possible to have setup,
when there is a subject matter that doesn't yet have an entry any
knowledgeable person that has permission to create an entry can do so.
(i am guessing thats already true for the wiki)
I am sure that may be more complicated than I am seeing it. But it sure would be nice.
I like this idea. At some point we are going to have to migrate to a new wiki (the one we have is no longer supported). When we do that, I will look into this as well. Thanks.
I think not... Cause i will always click the words by accident,
If i want to know something, i will look in the wiki myself
Maybe an option so you can choose
I don't like it either. That way it looks like some ad app has hijacked your browser and hyperlinks all relevant words for you. But, if you could choose wether to turn this option on or off, it might be an idea!

I consider a troll to be someone that joins a forum just to get access to a download or to frequently get info about something and never contribute back.
I don't really consider myself a troll... when I have something of value I will post. when I get really stuck with a problem I post. but I have no need to rant about BS or make comments on things that I am not really sure about.

3 gripes/bugs with new ATT Tilt 2 ROM, tweaks?, any other gripes??

Three things ive noticed since updating to the new Tilt 2 official Rom. Every time the device starts up, the "Backlight and Power" SETTINGS screen loads, as i said, every time the device starts up. Its pointless, undesired, annoying, and has done that from the start.
*(2) On the SMS tab of the new "HTC SENSE" (newer version of touchflo pretty much) whenever you get a new SMS and go over to the SMS tab, the newest message isnt ever at the top of the list (waiting for you right in front of your face) on the previous official ROM the newest SMS was always placed/focused right at top of the list for you to see instantly. Not the case with this new ROM, you have to scroll through your old messages, to the very top to read the new SMS, instead of it being right there.
*(3) Why the heck did they get rid of the task manager in the upper right corner next to the clock? Are you kidding? That was just too easy to terminate programs, and switch focus to them if youd like. They got rid of it!? Ridiculous.
Tweaks of any kind are welcome and appreciated, im sure by a few people. I am an advanced user so i would understand. If anyone else thinks of gripes with the new ROM please post here!

Thank you, i will definitely check that out. i appreciate the helpful input, instead of being told where and how to post like a lot of other people seem to like to do. I sincerely appreciate your time and efforts. Looks like a good suggestion by just checking out the screenshots.
There's already several threads going regarding this ROM in the ROM Development forum (where this belonged and has been moved to). Had you taken a moment to look you could have found them and posted your drivel in one of them instead of having yet another thread on the same subject scattered around the forums. Your Task Manager gripe is among the most well-known and easiest to fix as a cab is posted in those other threads for it. Forums have certain etiquette that members are expected to abide by and not searching and starting superfluous threads will make others call you out on it. I was not rude to you in any way.

The search function sucks..

Am I the only one that thinks so? I see all these threads being quickly responded to saying "use the search before posting, thread closed, etc.. ". Well if search worked halfway decent on this site these threads would be unnecessary. I'm sure a good percentage are noobs being lazy, but for those of us actually looking for legit info, well, good luck. Maybe it's just xda's mobile app search function. I have not used the websites search on the full site to compare. Again, is it just me? Somebody help me out here..
Example: there is a thread asking for the .Apk file for teeter. A mod jumped in saying use the search, and locked the thread. I'm interested in this game aswell, so I used the search. And nothing..
What am I missing?
Sent @ 04:20
Just did a search for teeter apk and recieved loads of results, many of which detail where to get it from and how to install it
Even starting a new thread with teeter apk in it's title brings up a list of similar threads.
Something is deft wrong then. Just did the same search (teeter. Apk) and got nothing but random threads that are fiftyleven pages long. Guess u just need patience and free time to find what you need.. Oh well

You just have to know how to use it. Kind of like Google search. Know what you want or need and be able to use terms or phrases to get you results. I joined xda last year and since then I haven't had any problems with the search feature. I either find the solution using search or figure it out on my own. I really don't understand how people mess up some times. Usually devs explain things really well, to the point where they are holding your hand. I love xda and couldn't imagine an android experience w/o it. Thanks xda!

i tried the search function, many results returned but i cant find a solution n i urgently need to ask for solution in the proper thread. but this is only my 3rd or 4th post.
i'm sorry if i complained.
kinda frustrated to that i have to randomly post to get off the 10 posts limit...
or is there any better way?
@ACis0014.. it's nothing at all like google search... Not even remotely similar. With google, you type your query and you have answers damn near immediately. Here, it looks as though it brings up threads that your search query might be mentioned in and I guess it's up to us to flip thru all the hundreds of pages and posts to find out if it's even the answer we're looking for.
And yes, god forbid we need help right away with an issue and post a question about it. Oh man, it's like burning their flag or something. It is what it is tho I guess. One of those things where you either deal with it, or move on..
Sent @ 04:20
I mean I am not here to convince you, that's not my job. You can believe whatever you want. But as I mentioned before I have never had a problem. It's also a matter of working to find your answering. do you expect everything to be handed to you? Rooting and modifying your phone takes work and patience apparently you don't have either one or just aren't trying. If you can't "deal" with the search than stay with stock or visit another website. Personally I don't ask for help until I have exhausted all other options. There's also a sense of pride in rooting and modifying knowing you did something by yourself without really having much experience beforehand. The devs and members here are wonderful who work their asses off for themselves and are courteous enough to share their work without really asking for money. At the most they ask for users to press a damn "thank you" button. Whoop di do! The only real complaint I have about xda is that some members post these stupid, immature comments or act like total douchbags or some think they are the damn xda police who are here to shape everybody up. Thank god my fellow mytouch 4g users are pretty good for the most part!

Lol. You're really trying to earn that xda brown nose badge aren't ya..
Look, The sites itself is fine, I've learned plenty and have done my share of research.I'm just talking about the search function and also the elitists here who think everyone who posts something has to post at a professional developers level. im not talking about your precious xda forum and its devs. This place is the best of the best.. Relax..

Don't use . in the search, only use keywords, so: teeter apk
If you do get stuck with no results that give you the answer, then if one of the results is similar then try posting in there to bump it back to the top.
It's also a good idea (tends to quieten down the "Search n00b!" bunch) to start the post with "I did try to search but came up with nothing useful, so if someone can just direct me to a thread they know about that'd be much appreciated, anyway, my problem is..."
Well, dunno what is up with the search here. I am pretty sure the stock vBulleting search has options to use logical operators such as AND/OR in search terms (even accessible via checkboxes).
Why is it disabled here?

Thanks for the tip.. I usually just google my question and add xda in the query and it usually will give me a list of specific posts and threads containing what I'm looking for.. example: (teeter apk xda) i find this much easier and faster than the forum search..
And also.. Yes, I would like things "just handed to me" when I have a question or problem.. That's what the Internet is for!!! In fact, I think the word Internet is Latin for instant gratification. Or something.. Just sayin..

Hmmmm, no answer?
Maybe just hook up a custom Google search here instead? Would work a whole lot better.

Suggesting something here apparently appears about as productive as screaming out for help in the middle of a deep forest. Maybe this sucky crippled search is a "feature", exactly as the crippled "report post" functionality.
Silently ignoring user feedback about apparently broken functionality is really NOT appreciated. The issue will not disappear if you ignore it.
The truly annoying thing about search on this site is half of the time when you want to use it, it is either temporarily disabled or otherwise not working.

I made a short "usability" analysis of the search feature here. Well guys, this way, you would not succeed even 10 years ago, when Google was just starting. Uh.
See below:
I gave up using the search function on the site and in the worst case scenario i search the forum manually (or use google directly)
The search function works fine for me. If you dont know how to use it optimally, thats not the same thing as it sucking
