I'm curious.
I'm sure this question is asked often, though a search turned up nothing (device specific).
There is a lot of hard work in ROM development for our device, and I applaud the effort and determination.
Is there a ROM comparison list out there, I am new on the scene, and am having difficulty finding information
on the differences, pros, cons, benefits and consequences to choosing one specific ROM over another.
Naturally, I am only interested in those specific to my device - T989 (D).
I see AOKP, PAC, Liquid Smooth, Slim Bean, PA, etc. I am not asking for opinions on which is "best."
I am asking for a "sticky" maybe - which informs people what's available so that we can make informed
decisions.
I would imagine it would benefit developers also - am I off in left field here?
Thanks.
Hey justaguy705, the T989 wiki page may have been the exact thing you are/were looking for, however, the information on it is very very outdated. As of right now, there is no specific post or link that compares all the current T989 ROMs in a list. It is either because the ROMs are always changing or there hasn't been anyone who wasn't lazy to create a comparison, ahaha.
Your best option is to just read through and compare the feature list on the OP's of the ROMs, read comments on the ROM threads and simply try the ROMs out yourself. This is a long process, but it is the only way to achieve any proper comparisons, unfortunately.
Hope that helps clear things up for you.
Thanks for the link FineTalent. :good:
I do think it is rather unfortunate that documentation is as scarce as it is. I am aware that the pace of development hinders efforts at a comprehensive approach to making specific information available to users.
Maybe I am just finding the learning curve a bit steep when entering the "community" at a point where to get "caught-up" requires going "back" and picking up the pieces to be able to understand what's going on in the present - if that makes any sense. I guess it is safe to say that it is similar to
getting a handle on a which linux distro to choose with so many available.
If you are familiar with the linux resource Distrowatch, I was hoping that there existed something similar for android development, though device specific. I 'll have to make the time to get educated, I'm certain the effort will be well worth it in the long run.
As always, you've been a terrific source of information for me - with the weather "brisk" in northern ON this morning (-23C) it gives me these excuse to hang at my computer and get my "learning-on."
Hello guys, I am looking to buy the new Galaxy S4 and I have a few questions regarding how Samsung devices generally work. I figured I'd ask on this forum because of how popular and well respected this device is. If anyone could answer just one of the following questions, I would GREATLY appreciate it. Thanks!
1) Developer support: This is a biggie. I love custom ROMs, AOSP, Kernels, all the works. I noticed that the S3 is split up to multiple different forums based on carriers. Does this split harm the development community? Are some devices more support than others? Could you flash ROMs or kernels from different carriers or are you guys strictly locked to the T-Mobile forums?
2) Reason for the split: Just curious, why exactly is each device separate? Do they each honestly have different radios bands / hardware that makes them completely different? On my One S we could flash ROMs / kernels / radios based on either carrier or international with no issue either way; we also have just one forum.
3) Headphones: Coming from many HTC devices, I never had issues with headphone controls (play/pause, answer/hangup, mic, next/previous). Do Samsung devices fully support headphone controls and mic? I have a pair of Beats with controlTalk optimized for iCraps; they work well on my current device and was wondering the probability them working on the new one.
The reason why I ask here and not on the S4 forums is because no one has an S4 or any real knowledge of that device, WHAT SO EVER. You guys have the device and are sane! Thanks again!

1. Generally, yes. But, doesn't seem have affected the S3. Many of the ROMs are supported either by dev(or team) making multiple ROMs, one ROM that supports all, or AROMA installer to choose.
Could you flash other ROMs, kernels, etc? Depends. Some, yes you can straight up flash it. Others, absolutely not. Others, you may have to tweek the build prop BEFORE it's flashed. T-Mobile and AT&T ROMs are usually the two that can. But, you need to find out if it can. Most ROMs will say other carrier support in their name.
2. Different radios, this, that, carrier specific goodies. But, mainly to help with organization.
3. Yes.

I've searched the forum threads, but not sure if I've found what I'm looking for, which is basically the stock AT&T Rom just without the 6,000 bloatware apps.
Does that exist?
I think most people here would consider once you start removing things, you've ventured out of "stock ROM" territory and into custom or at least "stockish" ROM territory. Reason being, what one person considers bloat, someone else might actually like. Although I'm with you, in that zero of the AT&T specific apps are remotely useful.
If you truly want something stock (but debloated) your best bet is probably to debloat yourself, although I'm sure you already know that.
The alternative is to look at the AT&T based custom ROMs like Skyfall or M8Rx and see if they meet your needs. Although, these still might be too "customized" based on what you are looking for. The ROMs mentioned are listed in my Index of the AT&T specific M8 forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2751432
For that matter, I wouldn't even limit myself to AT&T base, as in my opinion almost any other stock or custom ROM is better. Not only less bloat on many other carrier versions, but also things like WiFi hotspot (tethering) are not restricted (if you don't have a tethering plan).

I agree with everything you're saying, thank you for the reassurance on what I thought. I'm using Skydragon now, and it's great and all, but once you see that changelog with what the dev changed it's like ugh...
I'll check out the other rom's you mentioned.
A lot of the sense based ROM's have the stock look an most use the aroma installer to to install them an let you pick what HTC and Google apps to install or remove.
Visual Voicemail alone is a good reason to use an AT&T base IMO
I'm using Skyfall, but there are several ATT base options now. However, you will need to make sure the ROM specifies ATT base and not just ATT compatibility (which practically any international base ROM has).
Hello,
I'm currently running CM 13.1 on my rooted HTC One M8. Given that CM is now superseded by LineageOS (which however seems still in beta) I should upgrade it. I want to keep this phone going as long as I can - I've no wish to buy a new phone - and one way of keeping it perpetually "young", so to speak, is to ensure a good OS. (I had the battery and charging port/headphone jack replaced a few months ago, for about 1/6 the cost of the new phone.) I'm just wondering if there's a list, preferably with annotation (good/bad points about each), of current ROMS for this device. I need my phone to provide a solid experience, and I don't know that I want to spend days hunting through forums trying to find out what's out there, and what works best. I imagine that somebody, somewhere, must provide such a list?
Oh, my phone is the international version; it's not tied to any carrier, and as I say it's rooted. I used adb under Linux to move ROMS and open_gapps between my computer and the phone.
Thanks,
-A.

It really depends on how YOU use your ROM. What is important to you? Lineage is probably going to suit you well, or Mokee which is notoriously smooth. I like resolution remix which has heaps of customisations. Without xposed nougat may not be for you. Nougat still does not have agps enabled nor is NFC working correctly. Those may be enough for you to stay with 6.0. If so, I recommend mokee.

A list with good/bad points would be completely subjective. As another mentioned, what works for you depends a lot on personal preference, how you use your phone, and other personal variables.
There is already a "best ROM" discussion thread, if you just scroll down in this forum section and look. The list on the top post of that thread is not very up-to-date. But the ongoing posts/discussions in that thread may be useful to you.
But I'm personally not a big fan of such threads. Just because someone else likes a ROM, has little bearing on whether you will or not; due to the factors already mentioned. ROM comparison threads tend to turn into a popularity contest, and that is not a good thing in many ways. I can think of a number of times on different devices, where some really good ROMs (even some of my favorites) were not the most popular, or very widely discussed.
It certainly doesn't take days to look through the ROMs. Once you've narrowed down a couple basic requirements or preferences (Marshmallow or Nougat; AOSP or otherwise - from your top post, it sounds like you like ASOP ROMs) there really are not a huge number of currently supported ROMs that fit that description. From there, read the top post of the ROM threads to see if the features meet your needs and preferences. Once you have it narrowed down to a couple ROMs, also read through at least the most recent few pages of posts of each ROM thread, to see if there are any current known issues, bugs, etc. (I recommend this as a must before flashing any ROM). From there, just flash a ROM, see if you like it. If not, try another one. Also, make a TWRP backup of your current setup, before flashing any ROMs. That way you can easily revert if you don't like the new ROM, or run into issues.
Really this doesn't take all that much time. An hour or so, and you can pick a ROM or two, and already have it flashed, and be trying it. All possibly in less time than asking others for advice, and waiting for responses. And you've made your own decision, instead of letting strangers (which may not even have the same opinion about ROMs) make the decision for you.
Why on the forum for other phones we have a division into categories. Why in the OP9Pro section everything is in one thread. Is there any chance that there will be more custom roms for op9pro? I currently have op6 and 7t pro, and the sections for them are much more extensive. What it depends on?
It will be because the phone is probably not very common among developers.
Do you think that nothing will change in this matter?
I just want to get the latest updates on my le2127 but each guide is confusing, i found one for keeping the modem but the steps seem confusing.
I'm waiting for my oneplus, I thought it would develop more with time and there will be a lot to choose from. Unfortunately, I don't like the color os.
