HTC One M8 - Storage Issue - Please help!!! - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone.
I have been having a number of issues with my HTC One M8. I am on android 6.0 marshmallow. I started getting a lot of error notifications a while back, " Unfortunately, Sense Home/Google play services/Framework etc has stopped". If I close the notification another one just pops up. I later learnt of a temporary solution of clearing app caches etc. This almost never happened when I was using Lollipop. However the problem that has brought me here is that of storage.
My internal storage has be shrinking ever since I updated my phone from Lollipop to Marshmallow. Please see attached screenshots. Its becoming annoying not having space to save or install more apps. As can be seen from the attachments, "System" has now occupied over 10.07 GB of my 16GB internal storage. Something is not right there, it should be around 6GB.
I wish to solve this issue. How do I flash my phone with a stock ROM while wiping the internal storage so I can get rid of whatever is taking space in there. If possible, it would also be great if I can downgrade back to Lollipop. But that's not the priority.
I have not rooted my phone, bootloader still intact, I still have S-ON. My CID is HTC__203 (FRA). In case I need a specific link to a certain ROM. Many thanks, let me know.

Can you try to delete some files, or move them to your sdcard / computer or some place else?

I can but I am more worried about the hefty 10 GB occupied by "system". It increases with use.

Can you try rooting your m8?

The info given in Settings, or with a CID getter can be deceptive (and even incorrect).
What does it say for OS number on the bootloader screen?
If you know how, do fastboot getvar all, and post the results (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).

[Q] Android Revolution - basic question

Hello
Please forgive any non-tech language.
Please help - my recently-ex-boyfriend hacked my new phone and it now has Android Revolution on it.
I keep running out of space even though I don't have much on it - and looking at the storage in Settings, it seems that Android Revolution (542 MB) and Flash Boot (4.83MB) is taking up some of the space that I could do with freeing up.
Can I just delete them? Will everything still work?
I assume this is the case but could do with confirmation just in case it does anything to the phone that I can't undo.
He would help, but I don't like to ask.
So I'm relying on you guys - as he asked for help here when he messed up the hack in the first place!
Thanks in advance.

While I've got your attention - can I manually update SuperSU? It's telling me I need to but I don't know what it is/does.
Thanks - I may be a frequent visitor until I work out what I'm doing!

That is what gives you the root. So yeah update that through the market..
And welcome
There may be another reason why you don't have so much space. There are a few threads on here about the disk losing a whole bunch of it's 25GB for different reasons. the .lost folder being one of them.
Aargh, really?
Yes, it does seem bonkers to me. I've gone through and deleted music I don't listen to. I only have one or two episodes of t.v. on there and it's saying 'no space' all the time. Is there anything I can do without roping him back in?
How do I diagnose what the space problem is? What will I see in .Lost?
And then what do I do to fix it?
You're going to regret helping me as I am a real novice...
Thanks so much!
E
Grab an app called "Titanium Backup" from the market, besides its utility as a backup tool it will give you visual and numeric summaries of how much space you have left on your System, Internal storage and SD card. Where is it saying that you are running out of space though?
If it is displaying that message when you are trying to install apps then it is likely that the market is a little broken, this can be fixed easily with titanium backup (you just clear all the market "links" and then use an option called "Market Doctor" to restore the correct links. (I remember reading that this can be a permissions problem too and using the "fix permissions" option from Clockwork can also fix, I haven't tried it although it cant do any harm)
From the sounds of it your SD card should have a ton of free space...
I assume this is on your internal sdcard? Or RAM? Where your applications go? If its your ram, then delete some of the applications you have installed. If its your internal SD card then try deleting the application data that applications download automatically. Download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.thedarken.sdm SD Maid system cleaner, it essentially does what I previously proposed for you.

Ummmm
I think it's the internal SD card.
Specifically: I am using ADownloader and whenever I try to download something now it says there is no space (despite frantic deleting on my part).
And I have a calendar app which this morning was telling me it couldn't update data as there was no space on the device.
I'll try what you suggest and if there is an error message, I'll make a note and let you know exactly what it says.
Thanks, again.

Stuart, storage is not RAM.
As I said earlier it sounds like your internal storage is full. Please give figures of capacity&used for:
Internal Storage
ROM
SDCARD
okay...
25.85 G capacity
25.06 G used
Free 791.81 M
13.42 G is music which is surely not much and 9% is Adownloader.
Help!
What next?
E
Installed Titanium Backup but it says:
"could not acquire root privileges.
Please verify that you ROM is rooted and incluces BusyBox and try again.
This attempt was made using the "/system/xbin/su" command."
I thought that Android Revolution meant that he had rooted it??
(if that's the right vocabulary I'm using....).
E
Ah except that under the error message it says:
System ROM 1.32GB (518 MB free)
Internal 2.26 GB (426 MB Free)
SD card 27.1 GB (830 MB free)
Does that help?
E
Can you take a few screen shots of the SD usage? I should have a good understanding of what needs to be deleted. Or you can wipe your SD card and transfer your music over once that's done?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Okay I've done some searching and it seems that the best thing you can do is make a copy of your SD card on to your PC and then wipe it and transfer the data back. This seems to be a problem, but will most likely be fixed with a future update.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
I am trying to take screen shots as per the instructions but need a signal to get the auto-upload to work so that I can get them from phone onto here.
But, in summary, most of the 25 GB is music (67.9%).
E
Hi. Sorry, but how do I transfer the contents of the SD onto my computer?
I can connect using the cable and then... just drag and drop all the files?
And then... what do I do to wipe it on the phone and restore it?
Told you I was a non-teccie person!
Thanks,
E
Yup just drag and drop. Go to storage and then erase phone storage.

[Q] Help!!! HTC memory cleanup

Hi All,
I own an HTC One X which was bought only ~4 months ago.
It is supposed to have 32GB of storage and 1GB Ram
I also upgraded it with the formal upgrade
I've got from HTC to Jellybean (Android 4.1).
After installing a lot of apps (Well, many but not SO many)
i tackled into a dead end situation in which each time I want to
update an app, it tells me there is not enough space for the operation.
What I've tried:
1) Removed several apps I don't really need
2) transferred as many apps as possible to the SD Card
3) Cleaned the cache of the applications
4) called HTC support - they just told me to return the device
to the manufacturer definitions.
All those operations weren't as effecient as I thought.
I am now in a situation whereas:
SD Card has a lot of space available (with 442MB of apps)
Under internal memory (titled as: "application Memory)
=====================
1) only 563MB of apps.
2) have 6 GB specified as Other. (What is this? HTC definitions?)
3) But only 216 MB free (Is 563MB+216MB = 1 GB???)
And those 216MB free space is a lie because each time
I go below 200MB, I got those denials again
about not having enough space.
(See Image - look for the numbers - the UI is hebrew)
Has anybody has a clue what's going on in this phone?
Had I know I'll have such a battle on every KB in my phone.
I would never choose to buy HTC One X.
It is so weird that before buying this phone
I really read a lot about it, and the only disadvantages
I saw were about the lack of SD card and remocable battery.
These are disadvantages I can live with, but the current
situation leads to a real endless frustration.
Can anyone help??
10000 thanks on any tip you can give me

Hi,
Off course this is the obvious solution which can lead me to several hours of downloading all my apps again and possibly lose more info.
That's what I'm trying to avoid
I can see..

when I connect it to the PC I see in windows explorer only the internal SD card (22/25GB is free)
when I connect with Airdroid I can clearly see the same problem (attached is a clear screenshot - BTW I don't really have 363 apps - there are a lot of apps which come with the device and you cannot uninstall them)
I think that you can resolve with a factory reset.

Back them up first with Titanium for example?
But that would actually take space which the phone does not give you. Stupid of me... Empty enough space in order to back them up then.
I have same problem. For me 4.76 GB is used for "Others". I tried every thing, factory reset, clear storage, factory reset form Bootloader and nothing help. HTC told me, i have to send it to service. It's so sad. :S

[Q] Storage Full of "Other"

So I've noticed my storage is full of "other" - as per in the attached screenshot.
How do I find what that is, and do you reckon I can delete it?
It can't be cache stuff, can it?
I reckon it might be a Titanium Back up or a nandroid, but would like to know where to look. I'm back on stock and unrooted, and if this is something I can take off the phone and put on a spare hard drive, that would be great.
Thanks for your help...!

It could be the pre-installed apps.
When you first bought your HOX, you check your settings and storage, only 2.11GB available on internal storage (apps memory), and more than 25GB available on virtual SD card or phone memory.
Some of the custom roms on rooted HOX has this functionality that we can be able to view the full details of what is consuming our memory.
i use ES file explorer for this it can run an analysis of the sd card and tell what the folders are that take up the most space
u can also analyze a folder instead of sd card to see what map or file takes the most space
u will see if its junk or maybe some old games you dont have installed anymore
and can simply delete them after
Its everything you downloaded, music , folders , pictures etc

No it's not music, folders, pictures. I have same problem and ask HTC for help.
Man you should try to factory reset and clear storage, if that doesnt work and your phone come with used 4gb (like mine), you should send it to service. Already not found any better way to fix it. Sorry if i'm wrong.

I got a reply from HTC this morning that this is what system takes which is a total BS as system is only 1.05 Gb in my case it is /sys folder which is showing to contain nearly a MILLION folders and 500000 (yes five hundred thousand) files.
They really dont know what they are telling.
Odp: [Q] Storage Full of "Other"
I'm now at hospital so cant send it to HTC. But i try send it next week. I tell you what's result. From HTC this is only way to fix it. I'm not expert just saying HTC's solution. Wait, may some one know other solution, i will tell you how it's going next week when get phone from service.

I've got the same problem! Looking inside the phone with a root explorer the amount of all the folders is around 350 mb with a custom rom, all the folder except one ( /sys ). The folder /sys has something wrong cause the explorer just keep saying calculating...
Is there anything we can do to have back all these GB?? Thanks
Have anyone try to factory reset?
I have got this problem too.
I have tried "make more space" by delete apps.
But "Other" is nothing change.:silly:
If you have a backup or migration tool installed check if you have any backups stored and also check the temp files of that backup app.
The othet section is the pre installed apps and the system itself.

I had 9.45GB of storage in "other"
I tried finding what it was taking that much space and discovered nothing in particular.
Some time before, I realized my HTC One Mini 2 was full. I was replacing data to my Ext. SD Card. Then I realized that, no matter what I replaced, the 9.45 GB remained the same/Increased.
I think there is some kind of TEMP file for stuff you deleted/replaced. So you could get it back if you deleted something by accident, because after restarting my phone, only 5.5GB of "other" storage was left.
However, this is still alot of storage, and I can't find what the 5.5GB contains in any file explorer. Does anyone have a clue about how big the OS and Sense layer are? Thanks in advance

[Q] Storage almost full?

I've looked around the forums to see if this has happened to anyone else before, but I can't seem to find anything. I got a notification today that my internal storage is almost full and to delete stuff to get more room. But when I look at my storage folder in File Manager, my storage is only 5.37 GB. Weird.
So I opened the storage thing in settings to see why my storage is so full and what I see is that there is something in the "Other" category taking up 24GB of space! Everything else adds up to ~5.37 GB as expected. Now, I have NO Idea where this 24 GB of data is or where it came from. I can't find anything in my filesystem that looks like it has a large amount of data in it. I'm at a loss.
If it is relevent, I did just recently have an issue which I posted here. O resolved the issue by doing what someone suggested and I installed a recovery.zip with TWRP in RUU mode, and once I got into recovery I did a factory reset, and then reinstalled ViperOne (I tried installing the 2.10 stock RUU after the factory reset but for some reason it would't boot, but it did work when I installed ViperOne)
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
Is it your nandroid backups? That is what accounts for most of my other category.
I don't have any nandroid backups. Anyways, I checked my TWRP directory just in case I did backup but just don't remember... nothing there. I've checked just about every directory in my phone's filesystem and I absolutely can't find anything that accounts for 24 GB of used storage space.
Is it possible that my phone got partitioned somewhere down the line and there is an entire other partition hoarding all the storage space? If so, how would I check/fix that?

It just shows a bunch of small files, no bigger than about 5 MB. TWRP is taking up 0 B in my storage since i never backed up.
I really didn't have anything of utmost importance on my phone since all my backups are on my computer/on google drive, so I went ahead and did a format data/factory reset and reinstalled a ROM. Now the "Other" takes up 7 GB of storage. Still shows no files larger than a few MB when I click on Miscellaneous. So I don't know for the life of me where this "Other" is coming from... but at least its not 24 GB that are being hoarded anymore.

Are you sure you don't have a couple backups hiding in /data/media/0/clockwork mod/backups ?
This is the typical cause for the Other being unaccounted for.
It's not on your sd card...

Okay, I thought I already gave my file explorer root access... Oops. Anyways, now that I can see everything... My /data folder contains ~3 GB of data... Of which, ~2.5gb is already accounted for in my storage space from apps and pictures. I still can't find where the extra 7gb is from. The only thing with substantial amount of data on my filesystem is /proc....
Oh and now my "Other " storage usage has gone up from 7.0 GB up now to 7.6 GB in just the past couple hours. And I'll note I haven't done anything notable to my phone since then save for add like two apps. (In the process of writing this it went up from 7.6gb to 7.8gb)

Are there any apps that could be causing this? Look at the space your apps are taking up and see if something looks like it could be using all that space
I would do a factory reset, and then an ruu. Do the setup to access the os, but dont sign in to google or other accounts or install any apps. If it still missing space, my guess is its a hardware issue.
I believe 7GB taken up in "other" is normal. I have a couple back ups and roms taking up some space. Get rid of those and I'm right around 7GB. There was a little discussion about this when the phone came out...I bet if you flashed an AOSP rom, you'd be showing less than 7GB in "other". Sense roms are big and I think we only have access to 25 of the 32GB on the phone.

I actually tried that. For some reason I still can't boot after flashing an ruu. It just hangs forever on the white htc splash screen.
I did, however, format my data, did a factory reset, and flashed a different Rom (UnsenseOne). The problem was seemingly fixed until my storage space slowly started getting eaten up by whatever it is that my phone is showing as "Other".
Last night when I went to bed it was at 7.8 GB being used up by "Other", this morning when I woke up is up to 10 gb being used up. So somewhere along the night while I was sleeping and not even touching my phone 3 GB of storage space was used up on my phone...

Hello, D0ping! Thanks for responding.
A few questions before I go ahead with your recommendation:
1. Will there be limitations or problems later like I won't be able to use the storage or something?
2. Custom rom, root, etc will work like normal, right? I'm using Lineage 16.0 (Android 9) on X9006 with TWRP.
3. By "unification of memory", do you mean that the internal storage becomes one whole unit, used for apps, files or both?
4. What exactly are LVM and Chinese Unified Storage Method?
5. This process is to make the two internal storage units become one, and it will not interrupt other areas in the phone, correct?
6. The end result of this process gives me 16gb storage that can be used for files which also stores apps, instead of the old way which keeps the app data in system which cannot be accessed without root?
7. Additionally, in that post by brownboy1289, the screenshot of the software he linked shows some kind of unusual typewriting along with some Chinese at the bottom. I don't know Chinese, so it won't be an issue, right? Regards.
8. Also, I read in Reddit where some people said something like some roms won't be supported ("I don't know if CM12 supports it", "No, CM, doesn't support it."). Will this be an issue for Lineage 16.0?
Hey Dude, a lot of questions.
I give you short answers:
1. No
2. Custom Roms and magisk work fine
3. Yes, internal storage becomes one whole unit.
4. They are different methods. I prefer chinese method. I cant explain the difference.
5. Yes
6. You will get 16gb storage. You can use them for apps, files, pictures or anything else. I don´t know where those apps are located but with root it should be no problem.
7. Sorry link of the screenshot isnt working. If you follow the steps and read the posts of thread you will know everthing.
8. Lineage 16.0 has no problems. I have installed it on my find 7a.

Thanks for this! I am trying to do it now but I have some issues. There was one point when I tried to go into fastboot by clicking Volume Up without the battery. It worked at first but then I decided to just unplug the phone from my laptop and ended it. I think something happened and it bricked, I tried to do it again but the screen is black for fastboot mode (without battery). When I put the battery in and try to go into fastboot, it works and shows the screen. But without battery, there's black screen. So in the X9007_Android5.0_16G_20150520 program, I took out the battery and tried to proceed using this black screen fastboot mode and for some reason the timer goes until 10 seconds then it freezes. Nothing happens after that. Video: https://streamable.com/jq8cdd
What can be done?

Hello, D0ping! Thanks for responding.
A few questions before I go ahead with your recommendation:
1. Will there be limitations or problems later like I won't be able to use the storage or something?
2. Custom rom, root, etc will work like normal, right? I'm using Lineage 16.0 (Android 9) on X9006 with TWRP.

I don´t know why you have unpluged the cable during work!?
Can you install TWRP via Fastboot? Or is TWRP already installed?
Try this method to unbrick your device: https://forum.xda-developers.com/find-7/how-to-debrick-unbricka-oppo-7-7a-t3717802

I wanted to try again from the start after seeing how it works so I just unplugged it assuming it wasn't going to cause any issues. From then, the fastboot screen doesn't show at all when I connect the phone without battery to laptop. My phone is not entirely bricked, just the bootloader / fastboot isn't working properly. I still have the phone in its normal state with Lineage 16.0 and all the apps/data, etc (I haven't wiped anything yet). Is there a way to factory reset/repair/reinstall the fastboot thing in my phone?

Luckily your phone is still working. Maybe a factory reset can resolve your problem but I dont think so. I see no other option than replace linage with the original os. After that you can give your memory unification a next try. Afterwards you can flash TWRP and Lineage (with patch).
Help??

Hello.
My internal storage 16gb is separated into two - 4gb for apps/cache and 9gb for files. I need to make this 7gb vs 6gb. Is there a way?
