Hey all,
My device has a problem...one my carrier doesn't seem to know how to fix and I can't seem to figure it out either. I'm hoping someone with a little more wifi knowledge in android will be able to help me.
The gist of the issue is that my device connects to Shaw's Passpoint wifi hotspots despite how good or bad the connection is. So I'll be sitting at my desk and my phone doesn't have data anymore because it moved onto the Shaw network instead of the office wifi. It's not as simple as just forgetting the Passpoint wifi as for some reason it's been locked by my 'administrator'.
The official solution from my carrier was "Turn off your Wifi" this is not an acceptable solution. I'm willing to provide any information you may need to have a permanent solution to this problem. The antispam won't let me post a link to the screen grabs. Pm me and I'll send the link to what happens, or search Imgur for "Freedom mobile wifi disaster"
I'm almost ready to flash a custom ROM just to get rid of the Passpoint issue it's that frustrating

Hi guys
First thing my desire is unbranded and unrooted.
Ever since applying the last OTA my portable hotspot has stopped working.... I connect to a data network no problem, but when I turn on portable hotspot, I loose the data connection. I can see it trying to get the connection back but it loops for around a minute and then gives up with no errors.
My wifi has been fine since the upgrade.
Has anyone else seen this or have any ideas how to fix it???
Many thanks
David
I'm not sure this is the answer to your problem, but hey maybe it is the answer so someone else's problem
A Wifi device is either a client or a server - not both at the same time.
If you tell the phone to be a Wifi server, and it was connected to a Wifi network then that connection ceases to exist.
Next it will broadcast its own Wifi network for other devices to use. Those devices (and your phone) can then browse the web, send mail etc. using your 2G/3G connection, and they can talk to one another using local ip addresses handed out by the phone.
I hope this cleared things up, if not for you then maybe for someone else
Yup - experiencing an issue whenever I select "Press to turn on".. doesn't seem to do much of anything (beyond the Processing dialogue).. and while I get the Icon in the Notification bar there is no hotspot available. Can't configure it either..
similar specs on the phone... unbranded / unrooted

ok so i searched everywhere for this and couldn't find a solution. i have a note 4 and it will connect to my home wifi just fine. i can search the internet on it, but facebook doesn't load and neither do certain games and the app market loads very very slowly. when i had my S4, it would do everything just fine. i was at my friends house and connected to his wifi and everything loaded lightning fast. so i know it's a problem with my wifi, i just don't know what.
my modem is netgear and my router is belkin AC 1200
any ideas on what to check so i can fix it? i suck up a lot of data lol
Do a speed test on your wifi with another device to determine if it is your phone or your wifi. How does your phone perform on 4g? Does it do the same thing?
the wifi is fine. i can browse the internet, watch netflix, etc. When i'm on my data, everything loads like it normally would.

Try hard resetting you router and before customizing it(changing SSID, encryption, etc...), test it with your phone to see if its any better.
it didn't seem to help. it's dual band and i tried on both. it wouldn't even load the google play until i switched bands.
any other ideas of a possible fix?

Yes.
I just got my VZW Note 4 yesterday and noticed almost the exact same problem. There is a little bit of info out there talking about things like power saving mode and stuff, but I noticed that my speedtest.net throughput was excellent. My next thoughts were DNS resolution or an IPv6 problem. Turns out my wireless router had a default setting with IPv6 routing enabled, but my ISP does not serve IPv6. You may notice the same kind of initial lag on Ubuntu installs (especially with certain VPS providers) where every single command you issue seems to take ages to start, but then completes quickly. I know how to deal with Ubuntu to force a preference for IPv4, but a locked down Samsung phone is a different matter entirely. Thankfully, I was able to just turn it off in the router.
For my specific router (Belkin AC1200 DB), the user interface has an IPv6 settings page, but the options they present to end users isn't intuitive. I changed my 'connection type' on this page to "Local Pass-Through Only", and my problem immediately went away. Have a look and see if you find anything similar.
Thanks, and good luck!

Fixed My Issue too!
Hey Guys
Newbie here! I just wanted to say that this fixed my problem as well. I don't usually post as you can tell by my info but this was worth coming out of the dark to reply to.
Now to clarify, I too have a Belkin router AC1200 so it may be specific to those. Anyway thanks for the help and enjoy the fish!
someone sticky this! i have the same wifi issue , i am at work right now but i will try it when i get home! , i hope this works!
I am having this same issue bUT Comcast here uses ipv6 as well,I have a Belkin n1 router what do I do?
---------- Post added at 07:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:50 PM ----------
never mind i disable ipv6 in my comcast modem and it seen to do the trick, any idea why this is happening?
I've been having the exact same issue on my Note 4. for the past week or so. Our router/modem is a DPC3941T from Comcast, and I can't seem to find how to turn off IPv6. This setting was under Connections > Local IP Network. If anyone could help instruct me further, you would be a great help. I'm pushing my data cap for the month as it is because of this >.<
I'm having the same problem too. The funny thing is that I went to the Verizon store to see if they could trouble shoot it and the phone did not work on their wifi network either! I realize now how to access my IPv6 settings in my router and that does seem to fix the issue. Unfortunately I cant imagine very many businesses with wifi networks will allow me to reconfigure their router everytime I want to use wifi.....
I started having this issue when I upgraded to lollipop. My Netgear C6300 AC1750 doesn't seem to have an option to disable ipv6 though. Any suggestions?
Ok, it seems for me the issue with wifi calling not working at all is resolved (I always have the "Wifi calling is ready!" notification) but when I receive a WiFi call it will randomly disconnect after a few minutes. Might be 5 min, might be 20, and after that if I or they call back it might disconnect in as little as 2-3 minutes! Doesn't seem to matter if I answer on my handset or my GearS, still always drops in <20 min.
It's not my internet connection dropping, I also have Skype with In/Out running and can place/receive calls on it without any interruptions (on both my N4 and my PC).
Any suggestions?
Phone is 100% stock, not rooted, Android 4.4.4.
Wi-Fi calling was a PITA on KitKat with my Netgear router. Netgear support and DD-WRT forums for my router were both saying to disable the firewall. Forward porting and setting my phone as DMZ with static address didn't help with UDP packets and maintaining a connection.
Lollipop its better and the reason I'm not going back to KitKat but hardly tolerable without root.
I know this doesn't apply to you but with Adaway, I monitored the DNS requests for Wi-Fi calling and whitelisted them. That seemed to help with the Wi-Fi connection list issues. There's webservicesgateway and vowifi dns requests to look for. Didn't post for security concerns.
Yeah, I'm scared to make the jump to lollipop because right now my GearS is working perfectly and I'm scared to change anything major (spent 2 weeks fighting in on the "compatible" SGN2, finally said "screw it, I'm due for an upgrade" and got the SGN4) as Is aid I've not even rooted my SGN4 for fear of 'breaking' my smartwatch...
Router could be the issue, since it's a brand I've never heard of before ("ComTrend") but It's a router/modem combination that my ISP requires so I cant swap it out... may try the suggestions you mentioned, just in case, but not going to hold my breath...
If anyone else has suggestions, please post them. Right now I'm in a situation where I need VoIP (I literally get 0-1 bars reception, so bad that if I answer a call it drops) and to get Skype to work I have to turn off calls comming to my handset (otherwise the Phone App overtakes skype, then drops the instant I answer) which means I miss calls when NOT at home thanks to skype playing poorly with my cellular data... >.<
Off topic: did you consider asking Sprint for an Airave unit? Bad cell signal.
Mine was free to use and got exchanged/upgraded for newer model a couple of times.
I let mine go with Wi-Fi calling because it conflicts. Had to pick one.
I've had two actually. Back when it was amde by Samsung it worked GREAT, (thought they charged me soemthing like $5/month for it) but now the new "Airvana" version has stopped getting a GPS signal... why I cant program it in I dont get (since WiFi calling works with out constant GPS) It's been sitting around gathering dust for a while, I might get it out and try to make it work again, maybe they upgraded their system enough that it wont turn off... or maybe I'll try sticking it in the attic or something... thanks for the suggestion!
I now have hotspot capability on my phone, but haven't been able to get it to work. I went to Settings>Tethering And Hotspots and thought I set it up (wireless, not tethered), but I can't get internet or PC Radio. I'll admit I'm a dumb*ss noob and thank you in advance if anyone can give me a step-by-step tutorial.
I was able to pair my phone hotspot with my computer, so I know it was active. And I did see the head unit terminated wi-fi from my house and a different signal icon appeared. If you need to know anything else, please ask. Thanks again for any help.
EDIT: I figured it out-I was overthinking it. I didn't need to get into Tethering And Hotspots. It was there in Wi-Fi.
Hello, I have 2 Moto z2 play XT1710-07, one of them I've never "messed with", just OTA updates, the other one I unlocked, locked, etc,
Both have IMEI and are on Stock Pie PPS29.133-30 and both of them suffer from wifi drops when the screen is off / slow connection after some time.
I'd like to solve this, maybe downgrade to OREO or go to a NON-STOCK, or some other solution, whichever is easier.
Can anyone give me a hand please? Thanks guys!
PS: I have already tried factory reset, and also the "shut down wifi & bt search" solution, no go. (sorry if not the right words - Brazilian user)
Up, help please!
No one? ?
I don't have enough information to diagnose your problem. You should use the device help and see if there are any issues with your Wireless Lan adapter that way. Then you might want to see if the issue with the disconnects occurs while your phone is in Safe Mode. Then you also might want to enable Wi-FI Verbose Logging in the developer's options so you can get information about your WiFi connection. Which WiFI band are you connecting to? 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz? You could make sure that the developer option Mobile Data always active is turned off and then turn off mobile data to only connect via WiFi. You could disable all battery savers so that when the screen is turned off it doesn't shut off anything else. That's just some of the things you can try but it could be any number of things which causes the issue you have.

Thanks man! This is a VERY common issue on this Brazilian version, there is a GIANT topic on the official lenovo PT Forum, it's a major problem. I guess i'll have to go the a custom rom.
