Hotspot / Kindle DHCP problems - Moto Z2 Play Questions & Answers

I have, so far, been unable to get my Kindle 8th Generation e-reader to use my Moto Z2 Play as a hotspot. The Kindle connects to other WiFi without a problem, and I have connected other devices to the phone's hotspot successfully in the past. I have added the Kindle's MAC address as an authorized device in the hotspot settings, but an attempt to connect results in the Kindle's MAC address being listed for about 20 seconds as a connected device, with an IP address of 0.0.0.0. Then, the Kindle times out and drops the connection attempt. Apparently, the attempt to request an IP address via DHCP is failing. Can anyone suggest a work-around?

This ended up being resolved by Verizon changing a setting on their end. Apparently they are now disabling the hotspot capability until a customer calls in to complain.

[Q] Wifi conection stuck at same ip address

I am on a business and have been staying at various hotels. The hotel I am currently at I have stayed at several times but this is the first time I am having issues connecting to the internet. I have talked with their IT department and what we can not figure out is when my phone connects to their wifi it is assigned XXX.XXX.XXX.XX IP address but the phone says it is using 172.17.3.3. It was stuck at 172.17.3.3 last week and still will assign that address this week. Because of this the browser is unable to redirect me to the hotel wifi login screen. Yesterday the same issue has started on my Kindle Fire 172.17.3.104.
I am running anybones 5.10.605.9 and i guess my question is is there any way to force the phone to change or forget an ip address 172.17.3.3? They can see my phone on the network it is just that that IP address 172.17.3.3 is not the address that the network is assigning.

[TIP] Wifi connected but no internet connection!

At some points in your life, one of your Android devices connect to a wifi router, but can't connect to the internet. However, your computer, laptop or iPad will connect to that same wifi and use the internet just fine. I've looked everywhere on the internet for solutions, some of them are:
+ Turn off and on both modem and wifi router
+ Factory reset wifi router
+ Battery pull your phone, wait 30s and put it back
+ Reflash stock or custom ROM
+ Change DHCP IP setting to Static
+ Disable security (WEP, WPA) on wifi router
+ Check DNS server, gateway IP address for correctness
Fortunately, I stumbled upon this old thread last night -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371794
It helped fix the internet connection temporarily, turning off and on wifi on phone caused the issue to repeat.
In summary, he found out the correct MAC address for gateway was mismatched with the one on his phone. Even though the gateway IP address is correct (example: default gateway IP 192.168.1.1)
Upon further investigations, I found out my Wifi ROUTER has the same IP address with my MODEM (192.168.1.1) This IP conflict causes the phone to recognized the WIFI ROUTER's MAC address as the gateway's MAC address. This problem mostly occurs on Android phone, not computer (I'm no tech savvy so I have no idea why)
Simple fix: Go to wifi router setting page, change the IP address on wifi router to different number (other than default 192.168.1.1), and the problem should be fixed.
Please help spread the words to fellow Android lovers, I'm sure a lot of us have struggled with this problem
I'm one guy who is desperately looking for a solution to this.
Unfortunately the solution you gave didn't work.
Hi
i have a problem with wifi. it remains connected but loses internet access randomly. i found this solution:
"In the wifi networks, select the network you want and select ‘Forget network’
Turn off the wifi
kill all the apps with your task manager
Turn on the wifi again
Connect to the network
Check the internet connectivity
If still the problem exist, switch off the phone and redo the above steps"
it solves the problem, but it happens again after some minutes. actually, i also installed an app named "wifi fixer" which does the above process automatically. when the program is active, it turns the wifi off and on every 2-3 minutes. and the phone has internet access when the program tuns the wifi on.
any idea?
Turn off wifi optimization on some android phones help.

(bump) By any chance, are you all using Aztech's router? I have the same problem with my Aztech router.
solution?

2 years after the last reply I am having the same problem. My wife and kids all have internet access on their phones, tablets, desktop and laptops all from the same modem router yet I am unable to use the internet on my Galaxy S2 mobile phone even though my phone says connected to Wi-Fi Network Netgear 06.
The Mac address solution provided isn't applicable to my situation as my Mac address on my mobile is different to my modem router Mac address.
Any other solution?

KRT16S Causing wifi problems

Hey all,
I'm having wifi problems after installing the KRT16S OTA, not with the wifi on the tablet, but the tablet is causing my router to not work.
I have a Comcast Xfinity Arris TG852G router/modem combo, which was working fine when my Nexus 7 had Android 4.3 and even when it had Android 4.4 (KRT160). Once I updated to KRT16S however, when attempting to connect to wifi, all other devices would get disconnected.
Even when not attempting to connect to the router (with the access point "forgotten"), if the wifi on the tablet is enabled, all other devices will continue to get disconnected.
When I look at the logcat, I notice the tablet attempts to connect to the mac address E8-89-2C-5D-E8-D0, which then gives this error:
11-24 20:18:54.428: I/wpa_supplicant(670): wlan0: CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED bssid=e8:89:2c:5d:e8:d0 reason=15
When doing an "arp -a" on my computer however, the default gateway mac address is actually E8-89-2C-5D-E8-D1. For some reason the tablet is trying to connect to the wrong mac address, and this is causing the router to drop all the connected devices.
I've tried everything including factory resetting the router and tablet, but the problem persists.
Is anyone having the same/similar problem? Or have any idea on how to stop this from happening?
EDIT: Something interesting, in the router web interface, the mac address listed for the access point is actually E8-89-2C-5D-E8-D0, but the computer is connected to E8-89-2C-5D-E8-D1 and internet works fine, and the tablet tries to connect to E8-89-2C-5D-E8-D0, and fails and boots all other devices.
Thanks

Unable to connect to adb.

Hi All,
I have 2 fire tv both rooted and installed CWM and OTA blcoked and both running on same router.
Fire TV 1: i can connect to adb with out any problem either with wifi IP address or Ethernet IP address assigned by my router.
Fire TV 2: i can connect to adb with the ip address assigned to the wifi connection. However, i CAN NOT connect to adb using the Ethernet IP address . It give me an error unable to connect to [ip address]: 5555.
Can someone shed some light on this issue?
Thank you
Do you mean that both devices have two different IP addresses? There might be some function to ignore the wireless connection if a wired connection is made. Try unplugging the ethernet, reboot it, and try using just the wireless IP.

SmartDNS service doesn't work anymore after Fire OS 5.0.5 update

I am using a smart DNS service (such as unblock-us / unlocator) on my Amazon Fire TV as well as on a Fire TV Stick, in order to watch shows in my home country language, as I am currently living in Germany.
The DNS setup was done directly on the Fire TV Box, not in my router due to limitations from my internet provider. When I started with the DNS service, everything worked like charme from the start. But yesterday evening my Fire TV got the update by Amazon onto OS version 5.0.5 (before it had an OS version called 51.1.6.3.) From this moment on, the DNS service stopped working on the Fire TV.
Everything is still set up correctly, but I just get the German content, no matter what region I have set in my DNS Service account. No error message though. I tried to restart the device, deleted and re-added the network with the DNS settings and restarted again, restarted the router, but nothing helped. I haven't done anything different than before. So I am quite sure, it has to do with the OS update by Amazon. The Fire TV Stick in the other room still has the former OS version (54.1.2.3.). There, everything still runs smooth as it used to be as well on the Fire TV box.
Is anyone here facing the same issues with the new Fire TV OS 5.0.5? Does anyone know how to solve this or what I can do different, to make it work again?
Thanks in advance for your help.
same !!!
I have same prob since update today.. I was using overp*ay
Any luck getting it sorted thx
One way around is to get your internet provider to bridge their modem (if it is build into router) and buy a good router you can set-up using a custom DNS/VPN
I talked to the u*locator support today (Smart DNS Service I use). They say it's because of IPv6 that seems to break their service. Under settings → system → about → network, the DNS is not in IPv4 but IPv6 format. Apparently Android 5.1 (Fire OS 5.0.5) and my cable provider plus the Fritz!Box Router I am forced to use by them don't go well together in this combination. Former OS version was based on Android 4.2.2. - no problems. I found several reported issues in other contexts (smartphone wifi, smartphone push notifications, etc.) with the keywords IPv6 in combination of Android Lollipop, my ISP and the router I gotta use. So it seems I am unlucky with this combination.
So does anyone have a hint, what workaround options I have?
- downgrade to the former OS? How can that be done?
- would rooting and disable IPv6 on the Fire TV be a possibility?
- (bridging the modem as bula1ca said is unfortunately no option with my ISP)
I heard wired connections on the firetv box doesnt have this problem but im curious to know the fix because I have a fire tv stick
So I got a solution! Inspired by bula1ca's post, I am additionally using an old TP-Link Router now (TL-WR841ND), which doesn't support IPv6. No rocket science. I just connected the WAN Port of that Router with a free LAN port of my original Fritz!Box, set up a wireless network on that old router and changed DNS to my smart DNS service in DHCP settings. So now I have an additional wireless network that I only use with the Fire TV and my Fire TV Stick. Result: The Fire TV doesn't get a IPv6 DNS anymore, but only Ipv4. Works like a charme.

Happy that worked for you however some modems need to be "bridged" before you can use your own router.
My router is a Fritzbox and I'm using it in bridge mode. I have simply disabled ipv6 support for the home network:
-DNSv6-Server in Home Network - DNSv6-Server through Router Advertisement (RFC 5006) - off
-DHCPv6-Server in Home network - deactivate
SmartDns is working again even over a Wlan connection. Other router brands might also have this possibility
I'm facing the same problem with IPv6/IPv4.
How do you connect WAN with LAN ports etc., and what else needs to be done how so that the FireTV can eventually work with an IPv4 address?

See my answer above. You have to find a way to disable IPV6 DNS in your home network.
-You might be able to do it in your router settings
-if your router doesn't allow switching it off attach another hardware (router) to your WAN cable modem's port where it is possible to do so/or the router is an old pre-ipv6 model where it is off anyway.
Just connecting the firetv to a lan port won't help unless you have a special router setup

I can't disable IPv6 since my ISP is just providing IPv6 addresses. If I disable that within my router, there's no internet connection.
How do I setup another router via WAN? That may actually work. Do you happen to have a step-by-step guide how to do that?
Thanks.

You don't have to disable IPV6 completely, just for your home network (if your router supports it). - in case you get a dual stack IPV6 (you get an IPV4 and IPV6 address assigned the same time)
How to do it exactly, how to use a different router and what is possible for you, you would better ask in forums of your internet provider. (I had to request my internet provider to switch the router/cable moden they gave me to bridge modus, than I was able to hook up a different router on the LAN1 port of my cable modem - I needed it before for different purposes)
Your options are very much dependent on your internet provider and hardware you own, but basicly your goal is the have IPV4-only DNS on your home network
Not an option, sorry.
My router won't allow full disabling of IPV6 unfortunately.
I have just heard from unblockr.net a SmartDNS provider, and they suggest that it would potentially help to disable this.
My traffic is definitely being routed via their servers as I can connect to the DNS servers fine, but it won't unblock geoblocked content for a certain country I'm aiming for which is a shame.

What kind of router do you have that can't handle this simple setting?
