It probably does that because your carrier will download and install their own bloatware as part of the setup process.

You sound like this was unexpected?
Totally normal, that's why you insert the sim first and set up after so you dont have to do it twice

It was unexpected. Never happened on any of previous phones(PXL2, s7, g4, s3, HTC M8, s5). I hope it's not gonnna happen while let's say during travel and i pop in sim card for the country i am in at that moment.

Yeh never happened to me before either on any of my previous samsung phones or any of my phones for that matter. It's not normal to factory reset just by charging your sim, that's ridiculous.

Depends, any of the international exynos samsungs have never done this to me but here in canada if you buy an unlocked unit direct from samsung canada they will always do that reset upon first sim insertion....since the s7 anyway.

Yep thats how it works, they really should put a warning or something lol.
For those who say "that should be expected", I've been doing this for years at my job and it never happened once to me. Sometimes you don't have the SIM in your hand and you just want to setup up the phone for your user. Did this what, a hundred times?
Happened to me twice this week with two Samsung S8. Thought the first one was a bug or something...

Happened to me on s7 edge, s8, note 7...every single time. So yes I expect it on S9.

encountered the same problem today....!! how did you overcome this problem ?
So my S9 had been setup from scratch with the autoconfig done on first insertion, but no factory reset required. This was nearly 2 weeks ago. I have a dual sim version. Today, I get an autoconfig notification , so I tap on it to read it, it says its going to factory reset phone to configure network settings!!
But I haven't changed my sim, and its a dual sim so it should not be hard resetting EVER.
When you get message, so long as you haven't pressed close to dismiss it, just power off phone and power on, otherwise its BOOM and you've lost everything.

Hi,
I've just got an AT&T note 4 and it is sim - unlocked already, but i can not got the OTA update from the server, every time i clicked on the update it is always the latest but i know AT&T rolled out an update in December for Note 4, and i am still stucking in the factory build number. Can anyone help me
Do you have an AT&T sim inside the phone?
NIE is the latest version of the firmware. First check to see what version you're on.

Yes, you need to be connected to the ATT network (have an ATT sim card) in order to receive updates.

Honestly, I believe a plane trip is basically what you'd have to do. I'm just repeating what has been discussed in the following thread though:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3027462
The topic is completely unrelated to your issue, but the OP is having a similar issue. He is stuck on NIE (which is the firmware that came with the phone, unlike what I said earlier. NK3 came later) and he needs to update, but is using an unlocked n910a and isn't in the USA.
From the thread:

How do you expect the phone to run an AT&T update if you don't have an AT&T SIM installed to connect to the AT&T update servers? Unless I'm totally missing something here.

Man, at what condition you want to unlock a phone? , most of the time you don't want to use that network anymore or you want to bring it somewhere out of US, so you can use it with another mobile network. Either of the cases, you don't want to use AT&T anymore and now AT&T tell me that i must have AT&T sim and its network in order to update? The worst case is i moved to another country to live and my phone is stucking at stock version forever :crying:. This is common sense that a phone will fully function as an international Note 4 if i unlock it, which mean no restriction with AT&T anymore. So when i want to move out, i can continue to use it. Just like the Iphone, you can buy it from AT&T and when you unlock it will be an off-contract phone, you don't need AT&T network to update it. :fingers-crossed:
And an international version will work on att network.. you bought the phone from att, unfortunatly the industry doesnt work like you want it to (yet?). Your solution is to not buy a carrier branded phone and get the international version.
hey did you get the marshmallow update yet
I have a unlocked att note 4 using straight talk Sim and I still receive Ota updates

i just check my imei and its showing blacklisted thats after i gave samsung my imei for the return and waiting on shipping box. as of Tuesday. be careful guys think sprint or Samsung are blocking imei now
Seems pretty logical that they'd blacklist an imei for a phone that they expect to receive back as part of a recall, doesn't it? When you report a phone stolen, they blacklist the imei so a thief can't use or sell it easily (and to stop people from making fake claims and then keeping or selling the phone plus the replacement). They expect that since you've initiated the return process as part of the recall that you've also powered the phone down and will not use it (since that's kinda part of the agreement).
Yes mine has been blocked since last month. First wave. Only way is to swap imei number with another phone. I've had two guys that do imei cleaning and they told me the imei are no good for the note 7 and whatever carrier it was on will be blocked from use. Like now I have the Verizon version but it's blocked but still works great with att though.

If its a other imei from a different line other then the note 7 then yes, probably like from a note 5 or 4 but even then i dont know if u can just change the imei on the note 7 if not just changing the board won't work cause they will block all imei that ever was a note 7 that left the factory .

I don't keep my phone in my pocket or in my hand most of the time. I work professionally and keep it on my desk. Corporate email security policies dictate you have to constantly unlock the device and no notifications on lock screen. I also use it as my music streaming device all day. So many times a day I need to unlock it to either check notifications or change songs, etc.... Because it doesn't have a front mounted home button or fingerprint reader, I have to either awkwardly squeeze the phone to press the power button to wake it, and then enter a 5 digit code to unlock, or pick it up to get my finger to the back.
All of this many many times a day is unnecessary motion and honestly bull crap. I don't want to pick my phone up dozens of times a day. With the Note 7 and now the S7 Edge I can reach over with one extended finger and wake and unlock the phone all in one tiny fingertip press.
I know most people are in love with the rear fingerprint reader. When you are holding your phone it is very natural. Other than that I loved the phone. But when a device makes the most simple task annoying dozens of times a day, every day... for two years....... Nope... can't do it...

Hello guys. I want to buy new Pixel 2 XL, and best offer I have found is brand new from USA. Price is much lower then in regular polish shops, so I want to ask, is there any possibility that the phone will not work right in Poland? Maybe some options will be locked? Or there will be problem with updates?
I have Samsung Galaxy Note 4 from USA now and I can't update it cause it's from AT&T (worst mistake i could do), and I don't want to be dissapointed again.
Also, second thing, is the screen really that bad as they write in reviews? How is it compared to Galaxy Note 4, worse? There are so many mixed reviews, some praise the screen, some say that it is crap. Are there different versions of this phone or what?
Thank you very much for help.
pixel updates are not regulated by carrier, however make sure the bands supported on the american pixel are same as the bands used in poland. as far as i know america uses different bands compared to europe and rest of the world.
some screens are worse than others, but there is now way of confirming as some people with newer batches have also had complaints with the screen. and if pixel is not officially available in your country, you wont be able to rma also and i'm not sure how the warranty would work there in poland.
I would think as long as it's an unlocked USA phone and not from Verizon it should be fine if your country's bands are listed.
As for the screen, the blue shift and black crushing is there but it's not that bad. My wife had the Note 4 and it was a good screen for the time of release but I would say it's worse than that.

Hey there! Neighbor here, I'm Lithuanian. 3 days ago I bought mine from USA as well. Works fine, just buy a USA to EU charger adapter beforehand
By the way, switched from Note 4. Screen is a bit more dull compared to Note 4 but I kinda dig it and you can always use Saturated mode, so that's not a problem.
Also, camera, I'm shooting everything everywhere, can't get enough of it.

If you want to unlock the bootloader one day, you can't with Verizon. If that doesn't matter, then go ahead. The Verizon phone will work with the same SIM cards the carrier free US one does.

It's because phones sold by carriers are locked to only that carrier. If you were to get the one from Verizon and put in your SIM card you'd get something like "Invalid SIM". Phones can be unlocked but Verizon would have to give you the needed info.

There is no "American" Pixel 2. It's the same phone sold everywhere. Either the phone supports the bands used in Poland or it doesn't. The original post did say the phone is sold in stores in Poland so I'm guessing the Pixel 2 supports bands used in Poland or stores wouldn't sell it.

Yes, my bad. I totally missed how the new phones support all bands. The band thing I said earlier used to be a thing of past. A few years back American phones didn't used to work in India or other countries due to the bands supported in states were different.

If that's true it's a very recent change. A co-worker of mine is on T-Mobile. He bought a used Pixel XL last November. He tried to put in his T-Mobile SIM card and it didn't work. He discovered that it was originally bought from Verizon. He put in a family member's Verizon SIM card and it worked fine.
I've also never heard of ANY carrier selling a phone that is carrier unlocked.

Verizon has had to sell LTE phones unlocked since their won the 700 mhz block c in 2008. They are actually about to lock the new ones down this year. I bought a pixel XL in Nov 2016 and switched to TMobile in June 2017 and didn't have a single issue. I know have a pixel 2 xl on TMobile with no issues. Interesting that he had issues with it.

That's strange. I only have the experience of one single phone so I can't really make a general statement. All I can say is that for that one phone what is said in that Droid Life article isn't true. The phone worked with a Verizon SIM but not a T-Mobile SIM. If the phone was unlocked then maybe something else could cause that?
The reason not to get a Verizon P2XL is they lock the bootloader so it can't be rooted. As noted above they don't SIM lock devices, and haven't done so for years. Prepaid may be the exception to that, but I stay away from Verizon.

I don't think that is universally true. As I said in a previous comment the original Pixel XL, or at least one of them, was locked to Verizon. Did Verizon sell the Pixel XL as a prepaid phone? Maybe the Verizon Pixel XL my co-worker bought was originally sold as a prepaid device and that's why it was locked?
Maybe. I don't know and don't care to know as I don't do silly crap like buy Verizon or AT&T devices.

Google locks them all, theirs and VZs when they are first sold.. When they first start up they phone home and check a database on a server at Google to see if it has permission to unlock.
On the OG Pixel and OG XL there were quite a few errors in that system and VZ phones got permission to unlock. Still happens on the 2's but not as often.
That's it, a simple error in a database at Google.

And that would cause a used Pixel XL that was already used on Verizon to work for ONLY Verizon but not for any other carrier? So when it was first activated on Verizon it was only unlocked for Verizon?

I had the same issue after buying a supposedly "unlocked" Verizon N10+ Even after flashing the U1 (unbranded) firmware I still got the same message you did. The phone is locked to Verizon. I believe that after 60 days the lock comes off (assuming the phone isn't blacklisted)

Verizon phones used to be unlocked from day 1. They recently just started the 60 day rule before it's unlocked... Within the last 2 months

Can i flash unlocked US firmware on verizon note 10? I am using the phone outside the US and whenever i insert a sim card it works for a few moments and then the change carrier notification pops up. I think the phone modem is unlocked and it has something to do with the software.
The notification comes from the dialer app.
Please help.

It would seem that the phone is locked to verizon for 60 days. I imagine you need to have a valid verizon sim card inserted and active on a line for the 60 days. The unlocking is supposed to be automatic.
For reference here is the policy from Verizon:
https://www.verizon.com/about/consumer-safety/device-unlocking-policy
If anything I would call verizon and double check with them to confirm the above is true, and the phone qualifies for that 60 day unlock.
But to answer the question you should be able too. So long as your doing something like flashing the N975U with the N975U1 firmware.
Also flashing the U1 firmware will not have any impact with carrier/network unlocking. The term "unlocked firmware" infers the firmware is from the phone bought from Samsung. The U1 model from samsung is carrier unlocked and has no carrier bloat.
I know that the flashing a different rom doesn't really sim unlock the phone. But in this case the sim actually works for a breif amount of time untill a software notification which comes from the dialer app pops up and blocks it.
Isn't there a chance that flashing a bloat free snapdragon rom might actually do the trick?

In the US
Flashing ROM made for unlocked phone will not remove SIM lock on locked phone

If its blacklisted in verizon and I want to use it outside the us. Is unlocking the device gonna make other sim work, just not verizon or any us sim correct?

If the phone is blacklisted it is either reported as lost/stolen, an unreturned insurance claim or was financed but never paid off fully..
Don't think xda allows this line of discussion on the forum because of the potential liability for theft of service/device.

My phone was blacklisted and they changed the imei number. It is now unlocked to all carriers but I can't sell it back to T-Mobile or Samsung because it is not the original imei

I had my n976v imei # changed. Because the person I bought it from blacklisted It. It now works on all networks but I can't sell it to T-Mobile or Samsung etc. Only privately. Which is fine because I'm keeping the phone anyway

officerstyles bypassing the blacklist that phone is presently on is borderline fraud and/or theft of service.
The blacklist exists for a reason and not a trivial one either. If the phone landed on that blacklist it did so for a very good reason (i.e. It was financed but not paid off, stolen/lost, an insurance claim that wasn't returned, etc).

I contacted Verizon a few times and they say that phone is unlocked yet the notification still appears. How much did it cost to change the imei?
SO, not to hijack this thread, but the topic/title fits what I am trying to do. My VZW Note 10 + is passed the 60 days, an is "unlocked". I flashed the unlocked U1 firmware, and have a ATT/Firstnet sim in it, and it is working fine. I can't seem the get it to change like my note 9. On my 10+, even with the ATT/Firstnet sim, it shows (VZW/VZW/VZW), where on my note 9 it shows (ATT/ATT/VZW).
Can I get my note 10+ to show ATT? I also had to change my voicemail number manually to work for ATT.
Thanks for any info and assistance.

Did you take the sim card out, flash it with U1 firmware (using the csc_*** and not the home_csc), perform a factory data reset after successful flashing and then put your sim card in (and allow the restart to apply settings change for the sim card)?
That's the process I followed before and it worked. If I skipped a step it ended up with things not working like they should be.
Ok. So flash U1, then let boot up. Should reset in software or in the recovery menu? Then after reset, go through setup with sim during boot?

*Flash u1 and let it boot up after successfully flashing
*Go through setup, skip all as many options you can until done
*Factory data reset the phone (not in the recovery menu)
*After phone is done with FDR set it back up again
*once setup is done put your sim card in and let it restart
This is pretty much what I did
Just got this phone, and it will be used on Verizon. Searching the Web gives me conflicting information, so maybe someone here can help me.
- Will this phone be fully functional on VZW (does it have CDMA)?
- Is there any benefit to flushing VZW specific firmware (as I read some are doing)?
- This phone has a Snapdragon 855 CPU, and I understand that it cannot be rooted. If so, how is it possible to flush different ROMs to it (confused)
- and lastly, is there anything I should do before I bring this phone to Verizon for activation?
Thanks, and stay safe

Replying to myself:
The phone arrived yesterday, and I did get it registered on VZW. It did not go smoothly.
The CS person at a VZW store didn't share the details of her problems with the registration, but after numerous attempts she was just about to hand the phone back to me saying that it's not compatible with their network when she pulled back saying that the registration did finally go through, but not fully, and that I will/might loose some features, again; without specifying what those might be.
So, overall pretty dramatic, but ultimately successful process. The phone is set to "Global" 'Network mode', and the other options are 'LTE/CDMA' and 'LTE/GSM...'. Hardware info app shows 'CDMA' as the phone type, which was my biggest worry, to be limited to LTE only.
Now, about those different ROMs?
You can't use different ROMs on the 975U1 because it can't be rooted.
The only thing you can't use on Verizon is Video Calling as Verizon won't activate it on a phone you didn't buy from them.

Yes it can be rooted. Have to unlock bootloader first.

My bad, wrong terminology: firmware, not ROMs. So, different firmware, yes, different ROMs, no?.

I know that, I am the one who wrote the program to unlock the Note 3's locked bootloader by changing the phone's CID to a developer model CID... There is always a way to break something and blow efuses, but then your phone is worthless if on newer models, your carrier is Verizon (and perhaps other US carriers). That's one of the first things they check (electronically) when you call customer service. Depending on the type of contract, they may not even permit the phone on their towers.
Knox is gone, updates are gone, warranty is gone, etc.

This, and the price, makes it a not-for-goofs step to take, but one for which time may eventually come, i.e. for when the phone is orphaned, but it's still a viable performer. I've had my (2013) Moto X for nearly 7 years because it had unlocked (by Motorola) bootloader.
Still, this is an audacious monetization exercise.
