Hey everyone, I'm debating upgrading to xiaomi from my note 4. I could need some help deciding.
I don't really care which snapdragon it is. Both the 820 and 821 are a massive upgrade from my note and that's doing everything fine.
I'd like something smaller, but have no problem with 5,7" if there are benefits to it.
I'd like the opportunity for some kind of stockish rom. I don't flash daily anymore and am very familiar with miui since the original htc desire days. So miui is fine, but having the opportunity to go for lineage or aosp if i feel that way would be great.
So basically:
mi5s, mi5 or mi5s plus?
The mi5 64GB comes in at 277€
The mi5s 64GB is 307€
The mi5s Plus 64GB is 357€
Edit: I might also throw the Note 2 into the discussion. It's 200€ more expensive, but the bigger battery and the epic looks really are attractive.
My open questions: there is basically no development for the mi5s atm. Is there something to be expected? Is the mi5 still competitive or is it slowly eol? And for all options: Is the Ram upgrade to 4/6GB worth the price tag or is 3/4GB fine for you?
Any input to help me decide is greatly appreciated:good:
Mi5 has better camera for video (thanks to OIS) than Mi5s, otherwise they are very similar. Mi5 is longer out and thus has more chances for a custom rom. It does look like there will be some CM support (or whatever it is now called) for the Mi5s, there is one build here in the forum.
No idea about the 5s Plus.
Memory management is hard to say, but Android loves to have ram, so in general it's better to have more than less. Then again, this really depends on the ROM too.

If the screen doesn't bother you, I would buy the mi5.
: Better camera
Cm support
Deeper development here in XDA
PS: I have the mi5s plus 6gb 128 and I'm stuck in MIUI that I don't like very much. I going to continue to use my axon 7 until he has cm support

Mi5 doesn't have better camera than mi5s!
The mi5 has OIS but apart of that nothing else is better. The MI5s camera makes much better photos.
In fact it's so fast that I almost never have to make a photo twice, I very rarely get a blurry picture.
I would get mi5s 64GB. The materials are much better.
CM is still WIP but when Xiaomi releases the kernel sources it will be a much better phone.
With the recent Stable Global rom it goes like butter, didn't notice any problems.
By the way, the MI5 is 257$, the 64GB mi5s is 288$ and the 128GB is 348$

I'm with @dabyd64.
Mi5s has better construction than Mi5 (Aluminum vs Ceramic).
Mi5s is a little heavier (around 15g) and around 1mm bigger at 3 axis (difficult to tell a diference side by side).
Mi5s and Google Pixel have the same camera sensor, one of best as today.
Mi5s take better photos and regarding video Mi5s have EIS (at 1080) that is working better than Mi5 with OIS.
It could be better if Xiaomi invest on image processing algoritm like google did on pixel mobile.
Right now, Mi5 has better comunity support because was released first, more users, and kernel sources already released by Xiaomi.
I doubt Mi5s will have better support than Mi5, but i'm pretty sure we get the major roms.
Mi5 has infrared and could work as a remote control, this is the unique feature loss on Mi5s.
For me, Mi5s all the way. I would avoid Mi5s plus, if you really want a proper dual camera implementation -> Huawei P9.
We have to understand that a dual camera solution is all about image processing. For me, Xiaomi implementation was a failure.
If you need 5.5" screen size i would go for oneplus 3t.
Mi Note 2 has an oled 5.7" curved screen with te same 1080 resolution, so lower pixel density.
I really hate curved screens, and it's a pain to protect those devices.
It has a bigger battery, but generally bigger screen more consume, on the other hand oled consume less than lcd, you have to analyse sot.
200€ more relatively to 300€ it's significative, i would say put 200€ aside for a new one later on.
Not OP, but I would like to say thanks to @BPSoft and the other people who answered this question, as I'm in the same boat right now. Want to upgrade from my Mi4, and considering Mi5 and Mi5s. But the price is too close.
Do you think it is worth waiting for Mi5s price to drop a little bit more before buying? I am not very keen on using it with MIUI8 (jury's out for future MIUI 9), so I would be waiting for a custom ROM (CM, AOSP, ...). What do you think?
Custom, somewhat stable, ROM could be a way off for the Mi 5s, as the kernel source hasn't been released yet. At least there is a global rom now for the Mi 5s, but I'm not sure if that can be bought preinstalled. Not a big thing, but maybe waiting one more week (until CES is over) might mean a tiny bit lower prices.
Mi5s is at its lowest price ever, though (about 265€ for me). So many decisions... but I think i'll go for it.
Even if not preinstalled you can always unlock bootloader and install the global ROM, corect?
This is correct. Actually, if you run the official China build, you can simply download the Recovery Rom to the phone, open the Updater app, select the rom and it will flash it. No unlock needed. Works also with some, but not all, "shop roms" (globalized non official builds).
I want to thank everyone who gave their opinions. It's much appreciated.
So, if its xiaomi, mi5s it's going to be.
Currently the axon 7 is an option too. But, i'm debating squeezing some life out of the note 4 and waiting for those sd835 phones to hit the market. Might be mid year, that those come. And sure enough xiaomi will have a new mi with this SoC. Then, either it's cheap enough or the mi5s will get even cheaper... decisions, decisions.

For a 5.5" screen size, i prefer Oneplus 3T, huge support here at XDA, 6GB Ram, SD821 instead of SD820, 64/128GB internal space, but without sd card support.
See here for a comparison:
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8416&idPhone2=8067&idPhone3=7260
Regarding photo quality:
http://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=1&idPhone1=8416&idPhone2=8067&idPhone3=7260
As you can see 20Mpx says nothing about picture quality :cyclops:

I'm more optimistic, i expect "Mi6" release at March, like it was with Mi5. SD835 is expected. If i could, i would wait!

So it depends if you want OIS or faster capture. For my opinion cm development to mi5s Will take some time, soon we will have the mi6, so that's always the same thing , when we have some development there's another upgraded device that came out. We'll stay stock whit MIUI .

I have axon 7 too and it's my daily driver, that's another league. QHD AMOLED,3250mah battery, not stock but almost whit some nice features, stereo speakers whit Dolby Atmos, nice camera I would say a little better than op3. nice materials and naugat to the end of January.

What I really liked is the screen / size ratio, I think it's one of the 'smaller' phones which still has really good specs, decent screen and of course dual sim.

Almost all custom Roms are not even updated since last year. The custom Rom or Android development for Honor 8 Pro is totally off? Why is that?
Even after oreo release, feels like no one interested.
update: Honor released kernel source for honor 8 pro
https://www.xda-developers.com/honor-8-pro-honor-9-android-oreo-kernel-source/
personally, i feel that this is due to the fact that:
* many are happy for stock ROM
* stock ROM has got a lot of features and options for all sorts of ppl
* in terms of optmisation and efficiency, modern day version of Android don't really drain that much.
* battery tech has improved and we see phones packing bigger battery. so, ppl no longer than concerned abt battery life
* limited user-base -- so ROM developers are better off spending their time on phones with larger user-base, thus getting better feedback and attention

You are right, Thanks.
Just After honor ditch us, no chance of Getting future android experience ?
Honor left honor 8 pro.
Honor is fully focused on AI based honor view 10, the selected developer were given free honor view 10 handsets for its support and development of rom's in future. Honor has ditched the honor 8 pro.
The developers started working on honor view 10 and developed treble lineage os 15.1 rom based on Oreo 8.1 for kirin 970 devices.
Even the magisk and substrantum support is given for honor view 10.
I think this is my last honor device ??.

personally, i dun expect much since honor 8 Pro is a one year old device (using China's V9 as the actual launch). honor already launched a replacement device and if they actually continue to promote older device, then there's something not right with their strategy. so, it's only right that they get support for newer device instead, which is the View 10.
and the Q is... do i need custom rom? nope. i dun think i need it. and do i think it's needed for even View 10? nope... dun think it's needed.
many reasons why i dun think custom rom needed is in my first reply above.

I heard yesterday, Honor had removed Kernal sources for Honor 8 pro(or V9)[after its launched] that's a big problem also for custom roms.
Even in their own website the stock firmware is not available, no even it's name.
Stock rom might ne good, but Many people seeks for Future taste of Android. Honor already ditch us, The only way we could have taste Android p or Android Q using custom roms and now that also not possible.
Where as they are making sure Honor view 10 get erd party development supports.

i bought the honor 8 Pro because it is a good phone. great specs at affordable price. i din get it so i could get the latest version of Android. to me, so long as it works and it's patched (and while it's inconsistent but the updates have been coming from Honor), i'm fine with it.
and based on the above, honor 8 Pro is still a good phone. i don't really care about the latest Android version. what is more important is that i'm using the smartphone for what it can do -- connecting me. and it's doing a great job at that.

U r right, It will still be a very good phone with good specs nod doubt.
Everyone has their own view.
Some people's like custom development.
And Huawei doing open source for view 10 and removing 8pro(v9)'s kernal sources is really disappointing.
When honor8pro was launched, Huawei/Honor out up a show like this is device is going to get all the required attention and care. Instead they struggled with patches itself. Not even updates, fhey couldn't make working patches.
They looked for market and found one. That's it. US market is unreachable at least for an year or two, so a new strategy is to push as many devices as they can in current markets while lobbying for US market.
Honor tried or picturized a Xiaomi like strategy but went Samsung ish. Hardware wise 8pro is matchless in its tier but then there isn't much you can boast about it on realtime usage. They nerfed battery when some issues started its that bad.
It's a compromise device that has been further compromised. I feel honor is a sinking ship. They're severely dependent on marketing than letting phones prove themselves. They have paid Android authority and even Xda well to keep featuring posts or reviews about their phones. So that neo nerds or spec hungry guys can devour these devices and guys like these are usually the ones that are looked up or called up by less nerdy or less tech literates for their next best phone.
Such fake image doesn't hold long and easily shatters. Just like one plus which promised big things and promised support and longevity unlike google... and then just ditched all that, Honor too promised devices with better specs and better support but well... at this rate honor 10view will bite the dust soon as well, or if things keep going bad for honor/Huawei they might loop back.
Only time will tell. But for now it sure is bleak for Honor8pro. There isn't a way to jump to custom roms either. So when **** hits the cieling this phone will be a glorified remote control.

Honor 8 pro is the most neglected so called "Flagship killer" of 2017/18.
Shortly after the release of 8 pro, they had taken down all official firmware sources.
View 10 is view 10 all over the globe. 8 pro is just a 128 GB variant of V9. So it has been completely neglected.
When Honor was questioned as to why firmware sources were removed, they gave a dumb reply saying it was HQ decision and they have least control over it.
This is like being in Apple ecosystem. Very sad to see such a potential device being neglected completely.
Honor has suddenly started focusing on lower budget segment in India after 8 pro's launch. Devices like 9 lite are starting to see updates for Face Unlock and yester year Flagship 8 pro is still with buggy Oreo update which they cannot fix.

lol. why port an already working ROM. it works like a charm with only few issues:
1. some animations are choppy(doesn't concern me much)
2. no volte(i don't need it)
3. no stock camera(will be added soon)
4. minor graphical glitches. (doesn't affect the overall interface)

Hi guys
I'll try to make this short. I lost my Redmi Note 5 Pro (which I loved) and now I need a new phone. I stumbled upon the Honor 7x while searching for an alternative. You should know that I never bought a Huawei phone, I only used high end devices from Samsung, OP, LG and recently been using Xiaomi phones. I had a very bad experience with the Redmi Note 4 with its MTK SoC, since I LOVE flashing custom ROMs and doing all sort of new stuff with my device (rooting, xposed, theming..etc).
How is development doing for this device? Will I be able to easily unlock my bootloader, install TWRP and flash custom ROMs?
Also, how is battery life? and does the Kirin SoCs overheat and thermal throttle like MTK while gaming?
How is the overall smoothness of this phone (on official ROM)? No lags or some lags?
I'd really appreciate it if someone of you could provide some useful inputs based on your experience with this phone.
Thanks!
If you're type of person who loves to flash mods like Gcam,ViperForAndroid.prefer having tons of ROMs, smooth Gaming Experience Then a big No. Considering Honor 7x on Oreo is treble enabled you can surely flash gsi and Openkirin gsi yet none of them having VOLTE. Development on Kirin Soc is just bare bones. Speaking of EMUI is pretty good if you prefer Customs Skins over stock android. Speaking of battery gives Average 6-7 SOT.
Suggestion: if you're in hurry then get zenfone max pro else wait for Mi max 3, Nokia X6 , Mi A2 they are launching soon in indian markets.

Omg I love the Asus zenfone max pro! It seems such a great device for the price of less than 200$. But I can't seem to find it anywhere aside from flipkart or ebay (overpriced). I'm not an indian so I can't order it from flipkart. Do you know if it will be sold in the future on aliexpress or another international website?
OnePlus is the way to go. Get the 5T or the 6, both are very fine devices. Heck, even the OP3 (and 3T) are still good today.
If you like to tweak devices then this is for you. This phones hardware potential is ridiculous. The silicone is just a great piece of engineering and you can install some ROMS. Developers will make more because they know how good the hardware, not to mention the great price tag.

I'm not sure if sources are available, but Huawei is normally pretty good at releasing such things.
According to this URL: https://consumer.huawei.com/en/open...Type=openSourceSoftware&pageSize=10&curPage=1
If you search 'BND', you'll see "7X,BND,EMUI5.1,Android7.0"
What I meant originally was, the Honor 7X is an INCREDIBLE phone at an incredible price, lots of customization/tweaking options. I personally have lineage OS beta 4 installed.

1. I'm not a developer so I don't know, there are only a handful of custom OS you can download ATM.
2. Huawei provides you with a bootloader code to easily unlock the bootloader.
3. The trick with TWRP is you need to beable to install a TWRP that does decryption. Reason being is the Honor 7x, I don't know if its the entire phone.. it probably is... but I know for a fact some parts are encrypted, and you can't make a TWRP backup unless your TWRP can handle decryption. I tried to install a TWRP with decryption thats suppose to work for our phone, but I got some kind of error (I didn't write it down, but the error basically meant that it didn't work). The TWRP with decryption thats available was made for another Huawei phone thats suppose to work for the 7x. One thing you could try, would be to decrypt the phone, and then see if you can make a TWRP backup. Theres a few ways to do that: 1. TWRP>Format Data. 2. fastboot erase userdata 3. Theres probably a GUI way to do it in Settings>Security&Privacy>Encryption&Credentials>Encrypt Phone.
4. Battery life, Its way better than the Honor 5x. I haven't had my phone for very long, so I can't tell you the real world battery results. My battery menu says I have 7 days left of battery if that tells you anything. My Honor 5x got 4 days max, and this phone I know beats it... so my estimate is 5 days of battery for my usage. I'm pretty sure that Oreo has made improvements as far as battery. I looked at catlog in realtime, there wasn't hardly any activity going on unless you did something. On my Honor 5x there was always activity going on regardless.
5. I haven't played any games yet, So I don't know about SOC temps while under load. I've read on other posts that Kirin SOCS temps are good. Right now mines sitting at 29 celcius, which is excellent!
6. On official ROM, I only played with it for a short while, it seemed smooth. Now its not as smooth as iPhone, but I felt like it was just about as smooth as an android is gonna get.
Hi dev,
Why aren't there many custom ROMs for samsung s20+ Exynos or s20 series devices?
I feel oxygen os 11 would look great on s20 series devices.
Is there any component of device causing no custom ROM development?
Well... I had an exynos Note 10+ and the development for that phone was pitiful and was why I sold the phone. Thinking of buying an S20+ but only if I see some active development or at least plans
Well as phones ar getting more expensive and rooting less viable, I really don't see a bright future for custom rom development on future samsung phones.

Agree, valid reasons for rooting are evaporating. With app based options offering solutions and Samsung making it more and more challenging it's hard to justify. Especially when one considers the prices for a top shelf device and a very real possibility you'll brick your smartphone. Firmware and CSC's are much more complex than 5 or 10 years back, it's not like the good old days when rooting was more straight forward. With that being stated much of the push for rooting comes from users who fail to investigate which device is best suited for their needs, even within the same model line.

Hi dev,
Why aren't there many custom ROMs for samsung s20+ Exynos or s20 series devices?

Buy an OP phone if you like that, the S20`s have different hardware so most likely not possible.
so, planning on buying new mobile. The choice was between mi11x and realme x7 max. i know for the fact realme wont be having custom development (mediatek) . So the choice was MI. I am not a heavy gamer or user, i play cod mobile and use some technical apps. until now i am using samsung j8 (sd450 chipset) and i play cod in it. not a bad experience. so i thouht mi 11 lite is more than enough. but i hate miui or any other. i am custom to one ui and stock. so if the mi 11 lite doestn't have custom development ..... sadly i have to pass. and one more does it has nfc ?
NFC is there.
As for custom roms, at the moment there are no developments ongoing for this model AFAIK, but the phone is brand new.
In my opinion the street price is still too high for this phone, so few people bought it and there is little community interest ATM, but things might change in the future.
