Is it me or there are too many "clone" roms? - Lenovo ZUK Z2 (Plus) Questions & Answers

It's like there is one (or maybe two) real roms built from scratch and the rest are just copies with different skins. They all have the same features/bugs, I guess because there are based on the same sources.
Too many Oreo roms with the same bugs, what's the point?
Don't get me wrong, I love we have so many cookers that try to keep our device alive but I wish we had more... developers

My best ROM tried: Swiftblade 3.0/3.2

I've tried various ROMs All the original 1.35's, 1.37's and the 1.93. The last Hong Kong WWE release 1.93.831.1 didn't really live up to my expectations either. Many of the cooked ROMs are a real improvement, but I found Swiftblades ROMs to be the most stable and best performing ones upto now. Just wanted to share this with you. 3.2 is working so well that I'm not really sure if I'll change to his 4.0 ROM. But ah, for the sake of trying I might flash it anyway...
We all appreciate your opinion, but why opening a Thread just for it?!?!?!?!
You could leave your feedback inside SwiftBL's thread...
Sometimes I just don't understand these people....

As the thread is started +1 for me. Swiftblades are kick ass ROM
I have tested many many so far, and for now, they are the most stable...
Many thanks to all our cookers, I love you
Dutty's Rom's for teh win... every time...
Dont like Swift's Volume Tweak that makes every MP3 sound like garbage cuz of the elevated GAIN...
another pointless thread
yes guys lets close this thread I can see this getting ridiculous soon, every rom is different every person tastes is different, I dont force or cookers force any one to use thier rom, All I can say every cook spend a lot of time cooking to get the most of our devices so all cooks should be appreciated, Wethere one rom is gooder than the other
Missing "AppToDate" which is available in the TLR ROMs, in my opinion. Otherwise, you have install new ROMs and all programs again and again to be your device updated...

A Sincere Thanks.

I just flashed a Stock ROM today so I could wait till GEN Y D2 1.5 is released. And I just realized that I hate them.
I'm sure this thread might be closed but I just wanted to say thanks to all the chefs on the site(whose ROM's I use and whose I don't) for helping us make our phones actually ours. From Changing your ROM for eye-candy to changing it to increase performance or even for changing Radio's to better ones so we can get reception(Says a personal prayer to 1.00.25.05).
Anyways I'm off to flash to cooked ROM's again.
Thanks a lot again to all the chefs on the site.

[Q] Point of all these different ROMs?

I don't get it... Why are there so many ROMs? Shouldn't there just be a few based on certain core changes? Are most of the changes in the ROMs just based on the applications that are shipped with it?
I personally want a barebones install so I can install what I want and not have to worry about what other people like.
I'm just confused as to why there are so freaking many in the ROMs section. There should be a poll about which ROMs are the fastest that's constantly updating with their new releases.
Different ROMs focus on different things like performance, battery life, appearance and all kinds of other things there is nothing to complain about when you're offered a choice on these things
I'm not trying to complain, but it's a LOT to sift thru when you're new to the EVO. Why can't they all be combined into one super ROM (with great performance and battery life).
To provide choice.
And shouldn't they just make, like, a couple of different cars? One for highway, one for city, one for soccer practice . . . ?
Having options is why I like Android and Linux over, say, Apple. I like to play, I like to tweak, and I like freedom.
EDIT: I know it's a stretch, but I just love this:

You can always design your own... I am just happy for all the hard works these guys and gals put into this...Thanks

[FLAME] Wtf do people have againt custom roms?!?

I don't get it. Noobs love stock for some reason. They call custom roms buggy and glitchy whilst they are on a non overclocked, battery eating, sense 2.1 ROM.
We must CONVERT them to the custom ROM side. I dont make roms for people to call them buggy without even. looking at them.
Feel free to share your views and flame here. The wildfire s modorator doesn't really care anyway.
Okay, I'll bite.
First of all, I'm not sure if "noobs love stock" is entirely accurate.
From what I've directly seen/heard, I'm actually experiencing the opposite. Newbs are coming out of the woodwork with their (perfectly adequate) WFS and saying "Hey, I heard there's a custom ROM for this thing! That sounds like hacking! Hacking is cool! Therefore, I want it!"
I don't think a lot of the "noobs" (I hate that word... we were all NOOBS at one point) fully understand what they will gain (and, more importantly, LOSE) by upgrading to a custom ROM. I don't think there's any custom ROM out there right now that makes my phone objectively better. Instead, what you get are custom ROMs that do a, b, and c better, but in the meantime they break features x, y, and z. It's up to you, the user, to decide if you can live with the trade-off and what features are honestly the most important to you.
You say, "They call custom roms buggy and glitchy" but I think that's because, generally, they are! Of the 15+ ROMs I've tested, a lot were simply buggy or glitchy. Almost all had at least 1 minor problem with them. In the end, it comes down to "can I live with this bug?"
You're right - no one should call your (or any) ROM "buggy" if they haven't actually tried it. That's just stupid. But I'm getting the impression that isn't the actual core of your complaint. You want to see everyone convert to a custom ROM. Well, I'm on board with that... but you gotta understand: the stock ROM is actually quite good. I will grant that it comes with too much bloatware. But the Sense UI is simply stunning and stable. Almost everyone I asked says they miss it (after upgrading to a custom ROM) and they simply "learn to live without it"). I don't want to learn to live without it. I want my Sense experience, minus all the bloatware, stable, and a decent battery life.
You complain about the stock battery life? But I find custom ROMs MUCH worse at handling the battery than the stock (all other settings being equal). Dunno why this is, but it just is.
In a nutshell, users will just have to decide for themselves.
If you create a grid, like I did (sorry I don't have the link handy, but it's on XDA somewhere) and compare each ROM side by side, one thing will become immediately obvious to you: while each ROM may excel in 1 or 2 features, no one ROM excels in ALL features. So, you're back to the user having to make a decision: what do I value more? And any time she has to do that, she won't be 100% satisfied with a custom ROM because she'll know, in the back of her mind, what perfectly useful function she had to give up in order to move to the new custom ROM.
If you need specifics, I'll give you specifics. But for now, I promise you that each custom ROM does at least one thing worse than stock.

p.s.
Lest I be regarded as "ungrateful", I just want to make it clear:
I am currently running a custom ROM and I am extremely grateful for all the chefs who cook us up these yummy things. I've expressed my gratitude several times across several threads. That, however, is not the issue here. The issue is that I still find myself having to learn to live with a deficit (or two) after upgrading to a custom ROM, as described in my above post.
I totally agree with "Tigger31337"...
btw I am using stock 2.3.5 which I have modified a little for my needs with some scripts and I am really happy with it...stock is stable for sure, I hope you new sense3.5 rom gets to where the stock is because i would like to support you and to use the better sense
Kind Regards
I think users who run custom roms are doing so because they like to tinker, not because they make their phones that much better.
I run CM7 but its got a bug with the camera flash and therefore makes it perhaps less better than stock, but I flashed it because this stuff interests me.
The majority of users want a phone to make calls, text and run a few apps and stock does that. Most users have no idea their phones can run custom roms and even less idea how to flash a rom.
As for bloatware, custom roms are guilty of this as well. Does CM7 need to come with a torch app built in :-0

I see what you are talking about with bloatware. That's why I keep my stuff from .sense in /data/app where possible, so users can uninstall if they wish.
Users can uninstall bloatware once their phone is rooted.
Hi, users can uninstall bloatware once rooted but I think its not too healthy for the system as often users don't know what is safe to remove.
Much better to put apps that can be uninstalled without causing any system instability into /data/app as mentioned above. That's a really good thing to do as it allows the user to know what they can safely uninstall.

My opinion
I also do love custom ROMs especially CM7 with its awesome settings and theme chooser.
Also debloated sense ROMs are good (who wants peep, stocks, all the crap from htc).
Now my opinion on the WFSDEV Team
Do they work together? I don't think so
The ACE team is a real team, they do massive work, CM9 and other great ROMS
The chat is empty, and never worked well
No CM9, will it ever come
I asked for help with a cwm zip (week ago), the team didn't even look at it
Massive flood of sense 3.5 ROMS, based on the port of 1 person.
This will make it very clear for users which rom to choose of course
I hope it will get better soon if not, I'm going to leave the DEV team, because now, not a proud member.

very true. we need to re-think this. cm9 is a mess, as only one dev is making breakthroughs and he's gone on holiday or something.

I agree. I am making a "dev lounge" a.k.a. "job management system" however it needs work.

HTC 10 ROMS based on AOSP, AOKP, CM, DU, etc.

I'm new to HTC (but certainly not new to the world of custom ROMs). Is there a likelihood we'll see ROMs not based on HTC's software? Has HTC been good in the past releasing the necessary software to the developers to port other ROMs to this device? This is the only major thing I feel is missing with this phone. I'm enjoying having my root apps back and whatnot but I do miss having those truly custom ROMs.
We absolutely will see a ton of ROMS. It's just going to take some time. The device is brand new. Give it some time. Based on timing, it's also possible some devs are going to just jump right into N adding a little delay.
Either way, this is a dev friendly flagship, so we will definitely get variety.
yes it would get a ton of custom roms...
but definitely not a pure aosp rom or rom built from scratch on aosp for HTC 10 or any of the HTC devices so far...
that only happens with very few devices and definitely our pure love Nexus!!!!!
i miss those aosp builds already and still holding onto Nexus because ofthat....
Me too, im looking forward for them. I just jumped from a nexus 5, and i'm very pleased with the 10 but i do miss the customization and the pure android feel. God bless the developers, and hopefully we gonna see a pure aosp rom soon
Sent from my HTC 10 using Tapatalk
To be honest it all depends. 1. If the development get the device or 2. Some one gets it and does the work. The second option is most likely as most development teams fight only nexus devices and leave the other devices to people that buy them.
friendly bump it's August...safe to say no hope for any other types of ROMs?
Just bought my wife a gold OnePlus3. It's like a Nexus...stupid simple OEM unlock and ROMs up to wahzoo....tempting to switch over. I still like the display and the audio on the HTC 10 for now. It's pretty snappy and I'm happy with Viper but I do miss all the other "tweaks."
The main resaon for missing other Rom's is the later Release of this Device. But i think u only need one ROM, its Viper that u use... i recive my Device this Month and i know that i dont miss this CM Based things.

Not even close! Check the cm13 dev thread, development is more or less just getting started in porting it over (even though a lot has already been done, just what's left is not small)
A lot of custom AOSP roms start with cm as a base, so once they get the rest of the hardware/kernel level stuff figured out you'll start seeing the typical wave of them shortly thereafter.
Just remember this stuff is a hobby and it's summer time (at least in the states) so be patient.
Honestly, I've held out even unlocking so far in part because of this. There's enough on stock that the value isn't there for me until there's a tasty selection of both AOSP and sense roms for me to try
With all the stuff going on surrounding Cyanogen I wouldn't be surprised if we stop seeing CM ROM development altogether.

I guess it depends on how specific one needs to be on the definition. CM is an AOSP-based ROM, see http://www.cyanogenmod.org/about, so any other ROM using CM as a base would in my eyes ultimately be AOSP-based itself. Put into analog, let's say you take some wood and build a chair. Then later you cut down that chair a bit to make a foot stool, maybe cut in a cup-holder and paint on some cool new QS tiles. Is that stool made out of wood or made out of chair?

that is very true
but the point i was trying to make there was that most if not all non-oem roms (at least for htc handsets) rooted in AOSP are either based on cm or wind up getting ported with a HAL cherry-picked from cm. (just what i've seen)
the first domino has gotta fall

You would really be amazed. Most people are avoiding use anything from cm. Maybe only the theme engine but that isn't even really theirs. With CM history of not testing commits and bugs that have been around for years unfixed. Many are finding it easier just to not deal with cm. Plus the main devs ticked alot of devs off so they won't use it out of principles.

I've always felt CM 6-7 was very well polished and after so many devices being introduced, has lost it's reliability and polishness that OEMs offer after CM 7.

Yeah I'm basing all that off what I saw with the jewel which I just now jumped from. I'm a coder but not an Android dev by any stretch, and was rolling my own cm for the better part of the past year and dabbled in porting briefly.
I can totally see what you're saying though. At some point you get too many hands in the pot and it becomes more curse than blessing.
Sorry to bump this up again but is there any active development on AOSP for the 10? Haven't seen anything yet.
