Fire TV's downloading 6gb/day when idle - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have four Fire TV's, 2 gen 1, 2 gen 2. The FTV2's downloaded 6 gb/day while I was out of town. I had long wondered why I was using more data than I thought I was. Anyone had this problem? Is there a fix? I've disabled updates on both FTV2's.

any ideas?

how are you powering the fire tv? if plugged into a standard power socked I assume as with the fire tv stick it does not actually turn off. If powered via usb to the tv it will turn off so I assume that you are plugged into mains power and the device is still on and doing its stuff in the background thus using data. To use 6 gig i guess you was out of town for a while lol, anyway i think this is your issue and its not and error of any kind. to stop it unlplug the fire tv device when not being used

Was anything running when you left town or was it on the home page? Even if the screen saver kicks in 6gig/day is a lot.
You might want to think about making sure you fTV is in suspend every time you finish using it. The light on the front of the box should be off.

[Q] Netflix keeps signing me out

I don't use Netflix very often on the AFTV, but sometimes when I run the app I have to sign in again.
I have Netflix on a few other devices and only have this problem on the Fire TV.
Not sure if this happens when I don't use Netflix for a while or maybe when the Fire TV is rebooted?
It's really annoying!!
Anyone else with the same problem?
Seems to happen to me as well from time to time. Not sure the cause.
The closest reason I can find is either a reboot or force close of the app, but even then it still seems random as to whether it does it or not.
I've also had this issue on an lg bd player so it's not unique to the fire tv.
I have this happen as well and always suspected it was related to USB for power but haven't test out my theory. Are you using USB or wall plug to power FireTV stick?

I'm using a FireTV not a Stick.
I've done a some testing and can't get it to sign me out, have rebooted FireTV and was still signed in, so I'm not sure what triggers it.

This is a fix I used to help with "Netflix unable to play this title" issue. It worked for 3 days and then came back BUT I was also experiencing your sign out problem (at an extremely annoying frequency!) And since doing this it hasn't happened yet (about 5 days)
1. Go to manage applications<Amazon video and press clear data 3 times. Yes 3 times because apparently 1 and 2 don't get it done.
2. Unplug aftv, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in
That made it better for me and some others. At the very least it doesn't try your patience as much. Having to perform this once or twice a week is better than signing into Netflix 3 or 4 times daily. Hope it works for you...
Out of curiosity, do you know what firmware you're running? Rooted or not? Thanks.

Will try this this evening, but this is still strange.
Why do we have to do this on the Amazon Video app and not Netflix?!? It sounds awful but if it worked for you, maybe it will for me also
About the USB power, I have the Mission Cables MC9E that has a battery that keeps output voltage constant while in use as my stock USB ports are not enough for powering the FireTV Stick and didn't wanted to use the wall power.
Unfortunately the USB ports is my tv does not give power if tv is turned off, so the battery charges only o if tv is on.
I have been out for a week from home and just returned yesterday and in these days I unplugged all my electronic devices and my tv as well.
Now that I'm back, I plugged everything in and Berkley
Netflix was logged off. I thought was normal as everything was unplugged so I just logged in again without thinning about any issue.
It's still annoying as for example Amazon Video it was still logged in, and wished was the same for Netflix.
Getting to the point, yesterday I used Netflix and tv for less then an hour, then this morning noticed that Netflix was logged out again.
I thought was the battery that was not enough charged to keep some power to the stick, and then watched the tv for another quite hour.
Then this afternoon I turned it on again and Netflix was again logged off.
I'm doubting that the battery doesn't have enough time of power for getting charged, meaning that the Fire stick doesn't get power while turned off and it loses Netflix sinc or something related to is log maintenance.
I'll try to use the wall power for a while and let you know also this.
In case, it would mean that the FireTV Stick must not be far away from power for too long periods so to keep Netflix logging.
I say "must not be far away from power for too long" as if I mica the Fire stick from one tv to another unplugging it completely from power, it keeps Netflix logged!!

Why specifically do you need to reboot? (Audio issues, freezes, ?) It might make a difference in the finding the right person to diagnose. Does it sleep or does it stay on overnight?

yes the fire tv goes to sleep but in the morning The fire tv is non responsive cant do anything with remote no lights on front and blank screen.
Try using CTRL+ALT+DELETE on your bluetooth keyboard.
I found it by accident -- it will actually reset the Fire TV instantly.
I've had the same problem on both my unrooted devices.
I usually reboot using the remote (hold down the main clicking button + play)
Is you firetv usually idle with kodi running? i always have kodi running when this happens
I don't have a Fire TV, but I have had this problem with my Fire TV Stick, which was hooked to my Samsung TV and now my Vizio TV. Every time I go to use the Fire stick, I have to unplug it from power and plug it back in. It is very annoying. I don't get any messages, just a black screen.

I have the same problem. It seems to be getting worse. Pretty much everytime i use it it happens.
This happens to me as well. When plugged into my VIZIO tv, and running Kodi 17.2, the Fire TV will spontaneously enter a reboot cycle and will remain there until I unplug the power, wait 2 minutes and plug it in again. I have the new Fire TV 4k (hanging dongle), but this also happened when i had a quad core Fire TV Stick.. my original Fire TV Stick (with Voice Remote) continues to operate without issue to this day, albeit much slower since Amazon removed the Youtube app.
Oddly, the same device does NOT suffer from this issue if I plug it into my LG tv... Could it be an issue with the HDMI port (Port 1 (ARC) that I am plugged into??
Glad to know im not alone. Sometimes it will last for days, sometimes not.
I do use "advanced task killer" and "fast reboot" to kill kodi, netflix, firefox etc when Im not using them.
Guys, i used to have exact same problem and luckily was able to fix it. In my case as soon as the aftv goes in sleep mode it reboots in recovery mode . So because i have the TWRP customer recovery the box is not able to apply that update because is not the stock recovery. the only way to get it back to home GUI is to reboot the box from recovery. That was extremely annoying for me. A while ago i used to block the updates from amazon.com by using opendns, but stopped using it so the box becomes open for updates which automatically get downloaded on the box. Because im rooted there is a easy way of blocking the updates on the box itself by using Method 1 http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-block-software-updates-on-the-amazon-fire-tv-or-fire-tv-stick/. However this will stop working if you factory reset the box, if you do so you'll have to apply the blocking procedure again.
After the blocking is done just upgrade the box to the latest prerooted firmware from rbox and you're set. this is the link to the latest pre-rooted custom firmware for aftv1 https://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/development/prerooted-stock-images-t2882337.
i hope that helps.
To add to stutunaru, Method 5 is equally important to apply through TWRP, after a fresh ROM flash and before the first full system boot.

Bricked Fire TV No HDMI

Have a Fire TV 1 that has been bricked for awhile now and noticed something that may mean something and may not. Anyway the fire tv will power on but there is no display from HDMI to tv not even white amazon logo, nothing. What is interesting is that it will temporarily connect to USB....It will connect then quickly disconnect when I attach a usb a to a cable? Is there any way to get it to hold that connection? Also does that even mean anything that it will temporarily connect? When it connects it shows as Fire TV device. Since it seems to be nothing more than a paperweight at the moment I'm willing to try anything especially since I have another Fire TV 1 and a Fire TV 2. I think it got bricked when we had a power outage. It may have been in the middle of an update since it was not rooted.
Any suggestions at all would be appreciated

It is no way back in without recovery being install and as your unit was not rooted recovery had not been installed for sure.
Just buy a new one at Walmart put the old one in the box and return it

Fire TV 2 keeps restarting itself

I have a Fire TV 2, running version 5.2.6.0. About two weeks into using it, it's started randomly restarting itself after some amount of use. Sometimes it happens right away, sometimes it takes an hour or so for it to happen. It happens multiple times. I thought it was Kodi, so I reset back to factory settings, same thing happening.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
How are you powering the stick? is it plugged in a wall or usb on your tv?

Plugged into a wall.
Thanks for responding.
Same issue here.. happens to me while I'm in the middle of a movie pisses me off!

Immediately broke my Fire Stick 4k? Won't turn on.

Bought a fire stick 4k, installed kodi and xanax with kodi using a guide on the website TroyPoint.
After everything is installed, the fire stick just shuts off. No black screen, no logo, just looks exactly as if the stick isn't even plugged in other than my tv recognizes something is in the usb port. I managed to get it to turn on a couple more times by unplugging my tv and holding the power button for 30 seconds, but then the stick turned off again and hasn't turned back on at all since then.
I plugged it into my computer but nothing shows up when I hit adb devices. Tried to find any guides through Google and YouTube but I'm just stuck.
Is there a way to reset my fire stick back to factory if it won't power on at all?
I've seen mentions on this forum of using a usb hub, a thumb drive, and an otg cable. I couldn't figure out how to use those items in my situation. Is that something applicable here?

First thing you should do is trying another microUSB cable. If that also fails, then it might be a hardware failure.
Tried the different cable, no success. Thank you for the suggestion. I managed to get it running and did a factory reset, but it died again and the same thing is happening. Returning it.
