Need help rooting and putting a custom recovery - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a ASUS_Z00AD with Android 5.0 and I'm looking for a way to root and install TWRP. I want to be able to install custom roms and all the info I can find is either outdated or has broken links to download files. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

As you're running 5.0,
You can find official unlock all from Zentalk, and the n flash the root/magisk in this forum -- the most viewed one is still working.
As I am also new to XDA I can't send outsite links, sorry about that I can't provide the link.

I'd say first, upgrade to MM with the official ASUS firmware, available on their website ; then use this tool to unlock and install TWRP :
https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/general/bl-unlock-ze551ml-toolkit-t3546293
then install BORETS24 ROM, root is included with Magisk.

Rooting Stock ROM

Guys,
I need help regarding root of Stock ROM Lollipop. 5.0.
I unlocked boot loader, flashed twrp recovery but when it comes to flash rooting tools (Android revolution hd rooting tool) it does not flash and does not root the ROM. In recovery it says failed/ unable to mount cache ...
Am I doing something wrong or it the zip file which may not be compatible with stock rom?
Do you guys have any zip file which can root stock rom or the best would be if there is any rom already rooted but not modified. I like to stick to stock rom but want to get rid of bloatware.
I appreciate any advice, help or solution which may you provide to me.
Please do not ask me to search on google or XDA because I already did it and bother many people in the specific forums. As a result that they could not provide me with the solution I was forced to write in Help& Troubleshooting forum.
all the best,

Don't use a tool.
Download the update SuperSU.zip from here and flash it in recovery.
After the flash, find SuperSU in your app drawer and open it. You will be prompted to update binaries. Do that.
That's it. You are rooted.

I second that. The tool used by the OP is probably not updated to work on Lollipop.
Also, OP should make sure to run an updated version of TWRP (2.8.7) as anything but the last few (several?) versions of TWRP will not work on the Lollipop hboot.

[6.0] TWRP and Root for Moto Z Play

Hello guys, last week I was thinking about rooting my z play, and for that I was supposed to unlock my bootloader. That's not difficult to unlock it since you don't do anything wrong, following every step of the guide you found. However, there's something different on this device, the custom recovery. I'm not able to find a thread saying that there's an official release of TWRP for Moto Z Play, and even if I'm not finding an official one, all that I can see is just for Nougat, version 7.1.1, but I want it for Marshmallow, 6.0.x because I want to get back to that version, IMO Nougat uses too much battery comparing to Marshmallow, that's one of the reasons.
Could someone please tell me if there's a trustworthy TWRP img that I can use in 6.0.x to flash either Magisk, Super SU or any other root app?
That's all guys, hope someone can help me with that, THANK YOU ALL SINCE NOW!
Obs. Currently I'm not even unlocked because I want to do everything at the same time, until I don't get a trustworthy custom recovery to flash those zip files, I won't do that. Thanks.
Why cant you just flash the lastest twrp version? And flash an rom?

Because I don't know if the latest version is really compatible with my device, since I've gone to TWRP website and checked if my device was there... Aaaand, it wasn't at the compatible devices list...
So I'm worried about that...
Any help with it?

This phone don't have mods because this have MTK processor.
If you want root You can do it via magisk.
Just download stock rom (you MUST have same rom version in your phone) from htcdev.com. Unlock bootoader. Extract from stock rom boot.img. Patch it in magisk app and flash it through adb. I didn't tried this before but I've got this phone and I will do this same way i wrote. I did same thing with other htc with mtk processor and it works.

ultimate / universal root / twrp installation guide?

Hi everyone
Sorry I am confused; there does not seem to be an ultimate universal root / twrp installation guide for the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite phone (my son's phone) in 2019.
No offense intended but all these various posts on the topic just help to confuse people!
I managed to unlock the bootloader but can anybody please tell me what is the easiest / user-friendliest way to install twrp (which version?) and root the phone so that I may proceed with flashing LineageOS afterwards to get rid of all the bloatware.?
what about these partitions A & B?
Thanks a lot in advance
https://github.com/tkchn/daisyinstall/blob/master/README.md
This is the guide youre looking for
@barumbads: Thank YOU!
[EDIT] er... this is for flashing a custom rom!
I did some extra research out of XDA
[Guide] How to root Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite
and
How To Root Mi A2 / A2 Lite (Magisk) and Install TWRP Recovery
but again... confusing! which one should I go for?
(I already tried the later one and created another post following an issue with it!)

It depends on what you want to do.
Root doesnt need TWRP, just Magisk. There's a guide on here.
Flashing custom ROMs needs TWRP. Each custom ROM has specific instructions.
There's no one-size-fits-all solution for this phone.

Hi @a1291762 & thanks.
This is what I am saying it is confusing; I have been thru a few phones (samsungs, LGs, lately Xiaomi...)
and the process was first install twrp then root and then you could flash roms
I know when you flash LineageOS, you get root included in dev options so from your explanations I will look how to flash LineageOS but currently I'm struggling installing twrp as you have seen in my other post

My last phone didn't have A/B or encryption or use Magisk for rooting... So for me everything about this phone was new and different.
I started with stock (android one means I didn't immediately want a custom ROM). Then added Magisk. I added TWRP after edxposed caused me bootloops (magisk manager CLI can run from TWRP). I haven't installed a custom ROM yet but I've got a custom splash and bootanim.

None of the rooting guides work?

Can anyone write an up-to-date guide on precisely what I need to do to install TWRP on a global-edition, fully updated (MIUI 12) Note 8 Pro today?...
There are three different guides and none of them work. I'm not interested in custom firmwares or anything else besides TWRP. I just want to install TWRP and magisk.
We are in the same boat...
Edit: N/A
Are you able to unlock your bootloader?
Also, pay really close attention to the warning at the top of the TWRP downloads page for your device.
WARNING: This device hard bricks really easily for unknown reasons. Restoring device without spending real money is impossible as of now. Don't flash TWRP unless you are an advanced user who knows what he is doing.

Additionally, there are a lot of weird quirks all over the place, which makes your device... non-optimal for modding.
Let me know if you really want help with this.
I really just wanted root and didn't realize you aren't supposed to use TWRP for it on new phones (especially this one.)

It's not that you're not supposed to use TWRP. It's that you need to know what you're doing.
That device you have is very easy to brick. I'm just making sure.
If you do only want root, that is very easy. First: do you have an unlocked bootloader? Second: exactly what software version do you have?

I would recommend installing Magisk first since then you can use the TWRP installer.

Installing Magisk from recovery is a legacy option and no longer recommended. The recommended method of installing Magisk consists of patching the boot image using the Magisk Manager app and then using fastboot to flash the patched boot image to the phone.
Installing TWRP is then as easy as using Magisk Manager to flash the TWRP installer zip, then reinstalling Magisk using direct install.
In order to retrieve a boot image to patch, you need to download the update you are using to a computer, then use a tool like Payload Dumper to extract the boot.img.
Kind of complex but it's the only option if installing TWRP without it bootloops you.

I don't own this device so I don't know any guides. The process is the same for most devices and the scripts will automate it for you.
Like I said, find a software update for your phone (search "miui 12.4.847.37586 OTA update zip" or similar), use Payload Dumper to extract a boot.img, transfer it to your device, install Magisk Manager and use that to patch the image, download the patched image to your computer, boot the phone into fastboot and flash the new boot image, and you'll have Magisk.
From there, go to the official TWRP website and download the "twrp-installer" for your device. Use Magisk Manager to install it. Then direct install Magisk to keep root.

Hey!! Fun fact, you don't need to use payload dumper for that! Download the "Full ROM" with "Type: Recovery", and unzip it. Inside there will be a "boot.img". That's what you patch using Magisk Manager.
