.thumbdata3 is too big? Cant change permissions - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

hey guys, in my DCIM/.thumbnails folder are 2 files (.thumbdata3.*number*, .thumbdata3.*number*) which grow up over 500MB each.
i have like 1,5GB photos and videos on the phone, so it feels like over 1GB of thumbnail data is a bit much, right?
when deleting these files, they reeappear after some time again.
So, i googled a bit and found the solution where you delete the files, create 2 new files with the same name and 0 bytes and then take away the writing permissions so android cant overwrite the files again with the bloated big ones. but i cant change permissions with any file explorer so far, most of them tell me i might have an unsupported file system. i tried Root Browser and Solid Explorer without success. is it because i have data formatted to F2FS?
other than that, why are these files so big at all?
Infos:
FreedomOS 2.1.2 CE
bluspark kernel#151
bluspark TWRP v37 (data formatted F2FS)
EDIT:
Solid explorer classic worked.
anyway, still interested why these files have to become so big?

What files can be safely deleted in the HTC Desire Root folder?

I've been looking at the root folder using Astro and there are several files/folders. Can any be deleted, without causing any problem? I'm running out of space and am hoping some are just temporary files etc...
For example I've spotted the APK files are in \system\app. I never use the Peep or Teeter apps. Can I safely delete their APK files?
Thanks
p.s - I am using an unrooted HTC Desire.

you cant delete them using astro, we only have write access to /system in recovery, use adb in recovery to delete them
edit, without root you cant delete anything lol

In addition, deleting anything from /system won't actually gain you any more space for applications anyway due to the way that the filesystems are partitioned.

Dave
Thanks guys. I take it you mean we've got write but not modify access to the \system folder? So we can write to existing files but not delete them.
I wasn't just asking about \system though but any files/folders in the Root folder. Are there any at all, that can be safely deleted? Or are you saying you cannot delete a thing without rooting?
Not that it sounds like it will make any difference, due to partitioning.
Thanks
Ok to put it as simple as possible:
- no you cant pretty much delete a thing apart from sd without root
- we cant do anything in the system partition while the system is booted due to the nand protection
- we can modify /system while in recovery (using adb)
- when you are running out of space it is on the /data partition, which have a fixed size so deleting from /system or anything else won't help
And at last my advice to you is to go root and install a2sd easy as pie and i've never had space problems since.
Thanks for the informative reply mortenmhp
I have just rooted my 2.1 Desire, trying to remove two of the mms.apk and one other mms file in the /system folder so I can install a different mms.apk, however when I try to do it, it says I dont have the proper permissions. Its rooted, I see the Super User icon in applications.
Any suggestions?
Please read a little before asking questions. It is commonly known, that we dont have full root access on the desire yet.
Due to the nand protection you cant edit the system partition while the system is bootet. You have to use a custom recovery image either via fakeflash or installed by unrevoked. Then you can edit the system partition by using adb commands.
Edit: which i also stated quite clearly 2 posts above yours several months ago
Is A2SD better than the Android 2.2 implementation? Which as far as I can tell just moves the APK (not apps/data) to the SD Card.
Thanks.
Well it is kinda off topic here but in my opinion yes it is better. I'm running a2sd+ atm. and you can make it move /data/data as well.
In froyo there have been some complications though when remountingSD after using it as mass storage. But you can read more about that elsewhere(i would provide a link but I'm writing from my phone)
So the conclusion must be that it is down to personal preferences
Thanks because the official implementation is something of a cop out. On WM you could run the entire App/Data etc... on an SD card.

[Q] how to install adobe flash to system partition?

Hi all,
I'm trying to install adobe flash to the system partition to save space. I've done it by adding the flash apk and libs to the gapps addon (required for CM6 anyway).
I can see in root explorer that in /system/apps I've got com.adobe.flashplayer.apk, and in /system/lib i've got libflashplayer.so and libysshared.so.
Under settings->applications I can see that Adobe Flash Player 10.1 is present.
In browser settings, Enable plugins is set to "on demand".
But when I try a flash site that used to work, it no longer does. What am I missing?
Thanks for any help,
Phil
It seems if you leave the .so files where they were in /data/data/com.adobe.flashplayer/lib, eveything works. So it looks like the app doesn't bother to check /system/lib, but goes straight to its own data folder.
Any way to remedy this? I've saved 4-5 MB on /data by moving the apk to /system, but the .so files are 8MB between them, i'd like to get them on /system as well.
Before flashing a ROM, move the APK file into the /system/app folder in the ZIP file and then re-zip it

Hi Eddy, that's exactly what I did as I said in my first post. It didn't work initially, but I now have it working by restoring the /data/data/com.adobe.flashplayer/lib folder with the two libs in it.
So the apk is in /system/app, but there are still these two big libs on /data taking up about 8MB. I was wondering if there is any way to get the system to pick them up from /system/lib like with all the other libs.
Cheers for any help,
Phil
I just have the APK in /system/app and it's fine - got over 100MB of storage (but I only use 5 apps and have them all moved to /system/app)
really? can you do me a favour and check in /data/data/com.adobe.flashplayer/lib and see what you have in there? Should be one huge (~7mb) .so file and a smaller one.
you definitely have the latest flash 10.1 final? version 10.1.92.8? (check in settings->applications).
I'm thinking of creating symlinks in /data/data/com.adobe.flashplayer/lib to the two files in /system/lib and see if that works.
Yes I do have the latest it's there by default in Paul's MCR r8 ROM (first thing I did once it was out) - he normally has it set to go to /data/app but I move it (and the other 5 apps) to the /system/app folder and it's fine...I'll have to install Root Explorer again to check the folder, though...
EDIT: Checked that folder, there's nothing in there at all...
Oh. Huh. Can you check and see if they're in /system/lib? I wonder how paul's got this set up. Should probably just ask him
What file(s) am I looking for?
libflashplayer.so and libysshared.so. Cheers
libflashplayer.so is, libysshared.so isn't
ok thanks for your help i tried the symlinks and it works for now although i guess its a bit hacky. Don't know why yours picks it up from /system/lib and mine won't. I'll see if I can get one of the elder gods to give up their wisdom

any progress on this? I also would like to push those shared objects into the /system/lib/ folder to save on space
You need to have the matching apk and libraries in /system for it to work.

Had the libs in /system whith fresh MCR r8 ROM .. once i upgraded via Market to latest version they were also in /data/data.
So is there a way to get them to /system again (so that they will really be taken from there by the apk) ?
I am S-Off so the moving itself is easy ;-)
Marcus
soory if i dug an ol thread but i cant make it work...
copy the apk file to /system/app via root explorer and reboot...
in settings/application/manage application/all/
Adobe flash player is in it but it is only 56kb..
set browser for enable plugin to be 'on-demand' and 'always on' but no go (tried surfing on adobe flash mobile showcase site).....
to think i am thinking to move adobe air using this method too..
what else is needed?
Running Nexus One, CM6.0
Hi everyone!
I see this thread is a a bit old, but I've been trying to do the exact same thing with installing Flash Player in /system. My device also won't find the libs in /system/lib, so I'm thinking about doing the symlink stuff as well, but I'm not quite sure how to do this, since I don't have a lot of linux experience. Could you please help out a little?
Will this work?
Code:
ln -s /data/data/com.adobe.flashplayer /system/lib/com.adobe.flashplayer
Also, just to check: is there anything else I should do besides copying the libs Adobe Flash installs in its /data/data folder to /system/lib and creating the link?
Thanks a lot!
Not needed to make symlinks.
Just create folder /system/lib/plugins/com.adobe.flashplayer and move libs to it.

Storage is... not in a 0 folder?

So after re-rooting after a month of being on stock TW I expected all my files to move to an emulated/0 folder or something along those lines. However, when I got into it using ES File Explorer it was empty. Looked around in other folders and can not find them still. Idc if they are lost, I care that about 8GB of my onboard storage is un locatable and I have like 2 gbs left I really don't know where they could have gone.
So I tried a different root explorer thinking that ES wasn't showing them, found them using Root Explorer by JRummy Apps. However, when I look inside them they are all empty and cannot be moved. I want to try to save them incase anything may actually be in there (photos, music etc.)
Any insight would be appreciated.
Edit: Phoneboot got stuck in bootloop, going to Odin back to stock.
As for the files, they are not deleted, they just aren't shown by default. To find them, go to /mtn/shell/emulated. That should be your stock storage and then you can move, delete, or whatever you want.

What rom/system were you using before? In some situations when installing new rom version over the old without doing full wipe there are leftover files from old installation.
Using root explorer go to /storage/sdcard - list what is in there
go to /storage/emulated - there should be 2 directories there: 0 and legacy - list what is in there
lastly go to /mnt/shell/emulated - list what is in there - if you see there directories like "0", "legacy" then it's your original internal sd directory.
Now while installing new rom, almost all files from that directory should be moved to "0" directory for multiuser environment configuration, but sometimes they are not - the will be normally not visible in settings>storage information creating lost space" phenomena
Now comes the hard part - you can delete almost all files and directories except "0" and "legacy", but there may be some config files from your recovery and/or backup files from the same source (those directories will have in their names some familiar words, for example: devil, agni, clockworkmod, twrp) - you should not touch them. Browse directories (except "0" and "legacy") for old program data, obb files and directories, media, music and video files and delete them as they are not visible to your media players or programs. They are a bit like old "program files" and "documents" from Windows world

Were you in the root folder when you started searching for mentioned folders? Root folder is the topmost folder with main subfolders (etc, system, sys, storage, mnt and others) - there is no way that you would not find "storage" folder - it MUST be there.

It's a bit of a misunderstanding: Root folder is the main folder of whole file system, but it is also a simple folder named "Root" in the root folder (or otherwise called root directory) of the file system. It's the same if you crated in some directory a new directory and named it "directory" Easy, yes?
In the root directory you should have some typical directories: cache, config, d, data, dev, efs, etc, lib, mnt, proc, sys, system, storage and others
There must be a directory named "storage" and there must be a directory named "mnt" - those are the ones I was writing about before, please follow that.
Oh, and under any circumstances do not delete /dev (even if Android would allow that).

There are a lot of duplicate directories like that because they are virtual directories, like shortcut files on Windows , but unlike in Windows they have the size of all children files (with some exception. It is complicated and hard to describe without .... a lot of explaining for which I have no time ) The directory /mnt/shell/emulated is of interest to us, in enclosed picture you can see "User directory" that contains all files that your current profile uses, some directories in pink - they may be there or they may not be, but you should not under any circumstances delete them, directories in green are free to delete. Please list any other directory you will find there and their sizes so I can advise what to delete.

[q] how to delete a file?

Hello,
the title sounds silly, i know, but i really have trouble deleting some files.
Inside directory: /storage/sdcard0/dcim/.thumbnails there are several files for which if i look their properties i see that they are about 2gb in size.
Since my device has only 8 gb of memory, 2gb is way too much for image cache.
I try to delete theese files.
The problem is that whenever i delete those files they reappear, that is, my internal sdcard is still almost full, and those files despite that are not shown, but they are in the system somewhere, since my free space did not increased at all. Those files reappear in this same folder, after a few days and are still a couple of gb large.
How to really delete those files?
