I've always stuck with the stock CM7 kernel but am wondering if there is a better one that doesn't loose any performance but improves battery life.
I really don't know much about kernels, so hoping for done good advice on this.

well I'm sure you've read somewhere that every device is different when it comes to handling different things like roms and kernels. My EVO doesn't mind Golden Monkey, give me badass battery life and doesn't give up speed and performance. It'll suck on Chop Suey though. When it comes to AOSP roms and kernels, SAV-ZEN is perfect on my phone when it comes to speed AND battery life. I can get almost a whopping 2 1/2 days out of my extended without ever charging it along with decent use. i tried a CM kernel and i had a no go with it no matter how many times i tried it. i got horrible battery life and it lagged bad. but like i said, every phone is different like people LOL. you might like skinny jeans where as someone else might hate them haha
If I've helped you out, feel free to say Gracias
Check my setup below. I get phenominal battery life and never have to sacrifice performance whatsoever.
Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the OnePlus X stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Heats a lot!
Yup heats up like it's on stove at times. Every phone heats though . . In opx's case, it feels warmer because of the glass back design.
Not Frequent, but heats up! - 7
I find this typical heating while charging for more time or with a different charger or using the device while charging.
Try to watch a YouTube video with a cardboard...after 15min you can warm the milk
I went to the Sultan CM13 rom with 3.4.0 kernel and cpu underclocked, keeps most things cool for me
Cool for me!
I have rooted my phone and unlocked the bootloader, I recently flashed blu spark's kernel and my phone runs a million times better and a definite difference with temps, I run really cool, all with keeping Oxygen OS.
Stock kernel makes the phone hot when playng games. Custom kernel with UV profile can reduce heat.

im running oxygen os 3.1.4 with twrp recovery can u give me a kernel to keep my device cool
Yeah, sorry for taking months, but the kernel I used was blu_spark on Oxygen 5.1.1.
rooted phone on 7.1.2 stays pretty cool.
I noticed similar conditions.
My device is sometimes only when listening to music and in deep sleep too warm.
When playing asphalt 8 it gets really hot. Does not seem to have the best cooling
method as it is with the oneplus one.
Extremely hot while watching youtube.
Sadly; Changing CPU governor to a less agresive ones or lowering clock in Stock OS, makes my OPX very unstable. So I always reverting to default values.
Haven't tried Custom ROM yet.
Ok, so I got my new N5X 1,5 week ago. Before that I had the Z3 compact. After reading around on xda and reddit I decided to go with the purenexus + elementalx combination. Have been tweaking the kernel with EXKM with both bluejay, ghost pepper etc.
But the problems arise after >20hrs uptime. The lag and stutter gets really bad. Also the battery life starts to get eaten up (2-3hrs SOT with ghost pepper settings). I use messenger, Facebook, snapchat, chrome etc. I know these are memory demanding apps, buy I never experienced stuttering and such battery drain on my previous phone.
BTW, my idle drain is really good. Less than 3% during the night. I use amplify for wakelocks.
Don't know if I should try to change kernel or rom? Or just factory reset it to stock? Even though I love root..
Some suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Try purenexus with the kernel it comes with. It performs great with good battery life
I personnaly loved root and everything, did try purenexus with elemental x and a few tweak profile too
Result : no better performance, no better battery life, random bugs and hot phone with lags from time to time at the end of the day
I'm back to stock not rooted and I got to say I don't miss anything and the phone flies.
This is my personal experience.
I also recommend purenexus with its built-in kernel and leave kernel related values as they are. You should decript your data partition to get most out your N5X. Encryption is putting a considerable strain on CPU and battery and does not offer much in return (debatable). With Pure Nexus I get outstanding performance, amazing battery life and rock solid stability. Using it since tuesday and not considering any other rom for now. Just decrypt your data partition.

What's the difference in battery life for you? I've never decrypted it, but I'm thinking about it.

With my usage i get about half an hour of SOT more. Im averaging around 6+ hours with 10% left. This is mainly on WI-FI.
Is there a simple way of finding out what prevents Doze from kicking in on an unrooted device, or is it trial and error without root?
guys i like to play games and in summer day phone heats alot i tried aex 5.3 5.4 they heats alot and performance is not that great and pixel experience is also heats alot now i am using aex 5.2 it have good performace but it offer heating also so can u guys help me
Try BootleggersROM it is stable, has very good battery life and doesn't heat much
Bootlegger

id say icecold. even though i dont play games ive heard people say good things on pubg
Believe me, only Kirks can make playing pubg smoothly. Although this kernel hasn't been updated for a long time, in fact only this kernel made me satisfied when playing pubg. I have tried various other kernels, no one can beat this kernel. Try it and feel it.

True this! Kirk's has the smoothest interactive governor feel and quite good battery time.
Experience is first seen subjectively and then measured objectively thus Kirk scores 130k+ on antutu and 5500+ geekbench multicore for those interested.
Kirk's latest beta launched about a month or so back and has unseen brute performance amongst any others (like an OC'd SD660 with [email protected] & [email protected]) but also come with bugs.. like heck.Lotta.BUGS and weird throttling currently at lower Temps than sd636 thresholds (but obviously our phone's physical build/material/heat spreading capacity too matters and is likely deficient) so not much usable(if you don't want to experience random restarts etc)..
thus still waiting for stable as IMO it'll be the best when it does come out. (though i'm planning to test it again soon with xthermal this time)
Now, the second one recommended is Ancient kernel going by pure gaming experience (134-135k). It's also spectrum supported like Kirk's and the one-touch Gaming profile combined with xda developer Trilokia's GFXTool (https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-pub-gfx-tool-xda-1-gfx-tool-pubg-t3830287
) unlocks serious maximum chicken dinner potential! :good::highfive:
Can then flash xthermal mod which will stop thermal throttling at 40degree C and allow you to play smoothly for a longer period. Will the phone get warm? Of course it will as more performance=more heat dissipation (&especially at 60FPS/Extreme mode) so better to sit under a fan (stable 44degreeC for me after gaming for 3hours).
What's NOT RECOMMENDED is charging and gaming especially with Xthermal mod as heat will easily increase to 45+ especially if using Quick Charger, and it's not a pleasant experience at all with your fingers feeling the heat on back(the phone is too thin and body build doesn't allow much heat to escape fast enough with charging on).
Rest assured with these precautions heeded this will be the smoothest experience you can have on RN5P at the moment!
My kernel settings on Ancient atm (CPU interactive, I/O sched Deadline). On Kirks the same except I/O sched as TripnDroid.
Also try to keep 12-16GB free on internal storage as it's often an unnoticed but an important factor as <8-9GB free= degraded Seq&Random read and write speeds! Do use the app FSTrim (PlayStore) like once a week to Trim the storage manually.
P.s: After the entire charade of kernel setup etc my pubg experience is like this : Super smooth gameplay when having the settings unlocked and set on [email protected], heat is manageable. Server side lags are the only thing which can irritate you as the phone itself wont let you down.
Battery life would be like: 21%-24% drain per hour (lower if on 30FPS) thus from100% you can easily net 3.5-4 hours of non-stop gameplay.

I tested this Kernel, I did not feel a remarkable difference compared to Derp Kernel even that it is Overclocked, and also the battery runs out very quickly, thank you very much

Thank you very much for this answer, I flash Kirks Kernel, but my phone did not root, I do not know is it highly recommended to use the configuration you mentioned, Or just use the default configuration, but I will try it afterwards, thank you very much

Best suitable ROM for Kirk's kernel? PE or miui modded ROMs or stock miui ?
