Sm-a520f = sm-a520w? - Samsung Galaxy A3, A5, A7 (2017) Questions & Answe

Hi,
There are plenty of rooting instructions for the SM-A520F, but I have the Canadian variant, the SM-A520W. Will the same custom recoveries etc. work with my version as well?
Thanks in advance!

Hello,
fourFiddy Yes, i do believe you can root your phone using the same instructions and software as the SM-A520F. I had the same case with my s4 the international version being the GT-I9505 and me owning the SM-I337, however I am not 100% sure.
I highly advise making a backup of your entire phone if you choose to test it. However you could wait another month or two and see if specific instructions come out for rooting your phone as I am doing the same thing. The phone is fairly knew and has yet to be picked up by the community.
P.S. If you choose to go through with it I am not responsible if your phone becomes bricked or unusable, im just giving some insight and possibilities.
Good luck!

I also have a Canadian variant and the methods for the A520F worked for me.

I have a canadian variant a520w and it worked for me as well. I used TWRP

How did you install TWRP???

My SM-A520W is currently rooted on the stock Marshmallow 6.0.1 via ODIN. How did you get TWRP installed successfully? Having difficulty. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

My device is the SM-A520W. I followed the instructions for the A520F to install TWRP.. if it gives you a bunch of errors when you boot it up goto WIPE and and FORMAT DATA. I then go ahead and wipe data, cache, dalvik just for the hell of it. After doing so you can install Magisk or SuperSu from your SD Card, flash zips, create/restore backups etc. Hope this helped!!!
Edit: just to add. I used ODIN to flash 2 different firmwares. I am not sure which one I installed TWRP with (probably the android 6.0.1 one)(A520WVLS1AQH1)but I am using A520WVLU1BQI (Nougat) with ABC kernel + Magisk right now

I tried it out. A few bugs I didn't like...hard to use as a daily driver. Can't use LTE, music playback is not smooth and random reboots happen. I like the systemless root on Nougat but it's hard to find other roms to use.
What I have used so far is:
AXES rom, nougat sysless rooted and LineageOS sysless rooted.

Currently I am using LineageOS 14.1 unofficial for daily use. Prior to that I was using stockrom mini 0.5 for my A520W.

simplkernel for g925t on 6.0.1

Hello, i tried rooting my galaxy s6 edge g925t, on 6.0.1, and was successful but than tried to install twrp recovery and the phones bricks.. Later i get into the downloading mode and reinstall the stock ROM, than later i reinstall the root(CF-Auto-Root-zeroltetmo-zeroltetmo-smg925t.zip) and was still successful at the root. I figure out i need a custom kernel that will work for my android version, i cant find any kernels that will work for my 6.0.1. i still have a simplkernel for lollipop but i know that one wont work. Is there anyone that can help me find a simplkernel for my model phone and android version!
Never mind
I found a twrp/kernel recovery online and it worked, its all good now!!
I'm still using stock kernel which has no issues like in call audio or wifi problems.
only twrp that worked fine was Arter97 modified version.
as far as root rooted with version 2.71 Beta.

Link to a Tmobile supported SM-G925T 6.x Kernel???
Already have setup rooted working. I want to experiment with International versions. me thinks I still need a TMobile 6.x kernel to work since I already tried and wouldn't boot up. Nandroid back to my stock rooted TMobile Smartswitch installed version works fine.

So you'll tell us you got it to work and you'll tell us you successfully found a TWRP and kernel but you don't give us any way to find the programs so that we can use them as well which is the point of this website as far as I'm concerned glad your phone works but this post is useless...

What is the correct custom recovery to root the new 6.01 update?

I have tried several versions of custom recoveries to flash via Odin to root the new tmobile 6.01 fireward that was released today and have not had any luck so far.
So far I have tried using the recommended versions of twrp 3.0.2-0 with no luck:
https://dl.twrp.me/zeroltetmo/twrp-3.0.2-0-zeroltetmo.img.tar.html
https://dl.twrp.me/zenlte/twrp-3.0.2-0-zenlte.img.tar.html
Has anybody successfully rooted with the 6.01 T-mobile firmware that was released today? If so could you please provide a link with the exact custom recovery file you used.
Thank you in advance.

Search for 3.0.2 nobleltezt twrp and download latest version (This recovery is for Note 5 but works awesome, and S6 Edge+ TWRP stuck or won't boot)
Flash in Odin but remember to uncheck auto-reboot then reboot manually with volume down and power button combo.
To anyone having probs. rooting the new DPD1 Marshmallow update, follow the guide HERE. Looks like dirtybudha has compiled everything in one post. Hit the thanks buttons!!!!!! It works perfect for both devices.
So follow those instructions after already on the edge plus 6.0 firmware? So we would be flashing Note5 over existing edge stuff, right?

Correct, I odined MM from Sammobile for the TMO S6edge+, this morning but could not get rooted and Titanium up and running all day, flashed and odined probably 15 times. Long story short, both firmwares are DPD1, and work fine.
Ok that makes sense. I'm using a COKC 5.1.1 note5 ROM on my edge plus so I guess it's the same principle just on a different Android version.
Thanks

I know exactly what you are doing wrong...
Go into Settings>Developers options and enable the OEM unlock.
By default the OEM unlock is always enabled so you must have
disabled it!!! LOL
That's why you are having issues with odin flashing twrp.
Keep the OEM unlock ENABLED all the time.
Good luck,

Is there an odin tar for mm yet or bootloader and modem
Tia
I have 2 questions
1. Always private mode is lost by making root in 6.0.1?
2.in g928t 6.0.1 you do not need a custom kernel?

I just got this phone (SM-928T) and switched to Tmobile 2 days ago. Much happier with-mobile by the way. Anyway, I am on 5.1.1 AOGD and was weary about installing OTA updates so I didn't take incase I wouldn't be able to root. I currently have root via CF-Autoroot for 5.1.1 but, for whatever reason I cannot get TWRP installed on it though. Once I do it, it soft bricks and upon rebooting I get an error in the top left stating "RECOVERY IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING" I can only get back into ODIN. Recovery doesn't boot. I have to reflash with CF-Autoroot in order to get my phone to boot again. So my question is, if I install stock 6.0 firmware via ODIN or Smart switch returning me to stock 6.0 and "unroot" then flash then these files I should be on 6.0 and achieviable root again? Thanks for any info!
- Sorry If this is a dumb question, but I haven't been in the rooting scene in awhile since I had a Note 4 that couldn't be rooted on Verizon for about 2 years.

Is there a system root for marshmallow?

To my knowledge there is only a systemless root for marshmallow. I hate it! am having way more trouble than I should be having. lol So I was just wondering if anyone has devised a system root. Or if anyone knows how to uninstall bloat... Titanium backup isn't working.
T-mobile 3.39.531.7 firmware and stock systemless root rom
I am s-off and all that good stuff

I'm fairly certain that systemless root is the only option for Marshmallow. Perhaps another XDA user can help there.
I'm curious about your difficulties with Titanium Backup. I've had great success with it on Marshmallow with systemless root. Any chance we can troubleshoot for you here?

What exactly is the problem? Are you getting a write error? Or does it appear to be working but the changes don't stick? Because it works fine for me too.

The second one... it worked when I was on a custom rom but on stock it doesn't stick.
I'm assuming it has to do with the kernel but not exactly sure how to fix it.

It's probably the kernel. Maybe flash a custom kernel and see if that fixes it.
Just tried installing elementalx and after reboot it wouldn't read the sim card.. do you know of a kernel currently working on 3.39?

would you happen to know which distro or kitchen people are using to make their own kernel? I tried cygwin on windows 7 with no luck. I have also tried linux mint with no luck.

No idea, sorry. Ask in the ElementalX thread. Flar is usually happy to help with this stuff.
To use custom kernels with a T-Mobile firmware is a no-go unless someone specifically made it for T-Mobile (With their kernel source). ElementalX is only for international or non T-Mobile phones. The driver's internal to the kernel will cause issues like losing cellular connectivity. Your best bet is either flash the Dev/Unlocked firmware or get a stock T-Mobile kernel and use a SuperSu zip to get root access that sticks. I managed to get ElementalX to work once with T-Mobile firmware, but it was more work than necessary just to get some mods out of it.
Options
1. Make changes to System in TWRP(recovery)
2. Flash Dev/International Firmware and enjoy ElementalX with a very slight drop in possible battery or network coverage (depending in the area).
3. Keep T-Mobile Kernel with T-Mobile firmware and use SuperSu zip to get root access (I always use TWRP to delete/edit system files to avoid the annoying crash faults that tend to popup when i mess with things).
4. Modify ElementalX with a T-Mobile (ramdisk or intrid... i don't remember) which makes it work with the firmware but most of the advantages of ElementalX are gone. = Too much work for the small gain.
But overall it just sounds like your root is temporary instead of permanent.

Samsung A50 US variant (A505UZ) question

Hi. I just got the unlocked US variant of the A50 (A505UZ), but don't see any posts related to it. Is it possible to root this version? If so, which version of TWRP or set of directions do I follow to do so? Lastly, can I still receive OTAs if I do root it? Thanks in advance for any and all help
I think rooting is the same for all variants incl US because there isn't a separate soc for the N.A. like some galaxy models. Try rooting with magisk, you don't have to install TWRP so you can keep the system partition intact and don't trip safetynet so you can use google pay, bank apps. And ota updates will still work. Some people don't know any better and always suggest installing TWRP as a first step.

Thanks for the help! With the Magisk method, does this allow custom ROMs also? Sorry if thats a dumb question; but honestly, I've never heard anyone not use TWRP or similar to root, even with Magisk.

Magisk is a tool to allow the phone to be modified without changing the system partition. It can be installed on the stock rom or custom roms. TWRP is used to install Magisk, but TWRP itself doesn't need to be installed. I strongly suggest you read up alot or stick to stock rom.

Fire TV 2 Sloan Stock Rom (unroot)

Hello,
I got 2 Sloans from ebay that I had to do this procedure on https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/unbrick-root-twrp-fire-tv-2-sloane.3986303/ in order to get them up and running and they are, they are now running latest rooted rom from here https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/firetv-2-sloane-prerooted-stock-images-5-2-7-6_r1.3309783/ .
Which is great ! thank you XDA once again !
But I want to unroot and run latest stock rom which seems to be 5.2.8.0 (671761720). I tried all procedures to force it to update OTA, but it refuses and always says up to date.
Also reason for unrooting is some apps like peacock just refuse to work...
From what I understand I can just flash the stock unrooted rom via TWRP, but for the life of me I can not find the stock roms, or even a rooted latest ROM.
Any help is really appreciated ! TIA

Hi,
I would recommend you to use this procedure now that you have TWRP: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/unlock-root-twrp-unbrick-firetv-2-sloane.4222331/
After that, flash any of this ROMs through the NEW recovery: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/unlock-root-twrp-unbrick-firetv-2-sloane.4222331/#post-84353191

Really appreciate the reply. I tried the first link, and that didnt help, but I see the links to the original firmware so i might just try to install it via recovery.
I was able to unroot by flushing one of those roms and recovery is gone now as well. But it still does not go to the latest firmware... weird.
