I have recently bought an LG G4 as a budget device and I started noticing horizontal lines on the screen that look like equally distributed groups of dimmer and groups of brighter rows of pixels. At first I started thinking it was just the fact that I had a screen protector on my phone. But out of curiosity I compared my G4 , another one that has been bought about a half of a year ago and another one that was bought close after launch. Only mine has a screen protector on. I set the brightness on all three phones to maximum and noticed the one that was also bought fairly recently had the same sort of lines, however the one that was bought close to launch had ever so slightly better colors , no lines were to be found and was overall of better quality. Now I'm thinking that LG could have decreased display quality over time to make the phone cheaper and appealing to budget customers like myself. So I searched all over internet but haven't found nothing. The "lines" are actually barely noticeable and can't be picked up by a camera. I still like the phone but I would like to know if LG is producing different grades of displays for the same model over time (like revisions). Also note that all the phones tested were bought in the same country and all are the H815 model, also none of them were bought refurbished or used they were all directly bought from retailers/carriers.
Thanks for reading and please, let's discuss is this just random differences between displays or is this intentional to save money.
The original screens had problems with Screen Burn/Ghosting.
Mine suffers quite badly from it and was contemplating sending it back for repair.
LG could have changed the displays used in order solve this problem or it could quite possibly just be a stock/manufacturing thing.
Devices often change parts during their lifetime due to stock/availability issues or depending on which facility the phone was manufactured.
Mine has constant screen burns/ghosting. Motherboard has been replaced since bootloop problem. I don't want to bother send it back...
I know like the g2 had a jdi and a standard panel dont know what the diffrence was but lg did use 2 diffrent panels.

I understand that devices get different parts throughout their lifetime (for instance my previous device Xperia M2 had 2 revisions of sensors) , but I was just interested to know if there is any concrete facts of LG buying cheaper panels for the G4.

Hi,
I am on my 5th HTC One X, in 30 days. This one is Grey, the previous 2 were white, and the 2 before that were Grey.
My 1st (Grey) return was a faulty digitizer. My 2nd (Grey) was very minor (LED not aligned). My 3rd (White) was screen flex and creaking. My 4th (White) was creaking and signal. My 5th (Grey) seems fine.
I've noticed that the grey ones seem a lot more sturdy than the white ones. They also seem to have better signal (3G, Wifi) capabilities. Now, my sample was only small, and it was in the UK, and from one supplier.
I'd like to see if there is a correlation between the colour of the HTC One X, and the build quality.
If you look at the tear down pics, the phone's internals are all a single integral unit. They get put in a body toward the end of assembly. The way they're built, any "phone" could end up in any color "body." I'm sure whatever process HTC uses to attach the antennas and other parts to a body, no matter what color it is, is the same. So it's unlikely that the color of the case has anything to do with an individual phone's performance.

That's not my experience. Hence why I asked the question. To see if my experience was unique or more widespread.
The issues with the white cases was that the screens were ill fitting, and they creaked.
It could be that the white colouring used is effecting the plastic more than the grey colour.
As I stated, in my experience the colour certainly did make a difference. Not one of the grey ones I had suffered any creaking, what-so-ever. yet both of the white ones did.
By now, after being on the market for five months, there's several hundred thousand One X's in the wild. On the forum there are pages of discussion of China vs. Taiwan builds, whether early builds are better than later builds, and whether phones sold in different regions have different levels of problems. A lot of people have also swapped from white to gray phones and vice versa. If something as obvious as "grey phones are built better" was true, it would have come up on its own. And it’s not like people on the forum aren’t examining their phones closely.
Do you think someone with a working grey device would see its performance change if they bought this off of eBay and changed the color of their phone?
By the way, a bunch of people have bought replacement covers off of eBay and put them on their phones themselves. Quite a few people have also opened up their phones to self-repair the Wi-Fi h/w issue rather than waiting on HTC. Nothing odd was reported. By all means do carry on, but it's doubtful a trend's going to arise if it hasn't already.

Your experience and assumption are based on a sample of 5 phones. The only way you can draw a definite conclusion is by using statistical analysis, which requires the sample being used to be much larger. The experience you had is not significant enough to generalize it towards all HOX phones.

Hi, Bought M9 yesterday after 30 minutes decided to sell. main reason was display. İt felt some how step back from M8. Display is greenish, not as bright also viewing angles is worst reminded me LG G2. also when you tilt screen little bit you get rainbow effects i assume thats becuase display not being in cell. but that happened to me o M7 few weeks later i found really good display maybe should never buy new phoenes as they come out. i did have around 300 mb update after that phones was still hot, and camera was not good.
Why did i buy M9 i like HTC as company i would buy their product instead of Samsung but now i feel a little disapointed. i think they could have made phone better but instead went lazy.
Before i get bashed i put picture of phone
Its the same screen as the M8, I had concerns with the colour depth as its not quite as vibrant as the M8, although that's down to the configuration in the display driver, should be easy to tweak at either htcs end or when kernel source drops.
I have not seen any rainbowing or angle issues so you may have picked up a duff/faulty screen

I really do hope so! I will build a kernel using the m8 display drivers if it doesn't... When looking through the camera its actually a little more true to life than the m8 was
The screen on mine is slightly better than my M8. Much better white balance. It's not at all green. The phone has it's faults, lots of them, but the screen is not one of them.
Sorry to hear that and at least you gave it a try. By now I am very much hesitant getting the M9. I love HTC product; coming from Nexus 5; I promised myself to only by HTC phones again. The m8 has spoiled me so much with build quality and the software optimization. By now M9 has shown its definitely not a step forward from M8. I say this because look at the changes at HTC; CEO resigned and also the main designer left; plus all the negative reviews speaks for itself. Hopefully by now HTC learned their lesson.

So I received my m9 a couple days ago and can really notice the green tint, haven't decided if I wanna return it because I don't know if this is normal, or something that can be fixed through software tweaks or what. I talked to Tmo and they said it was noted across the board that the displays have a greenish tint, basically told me to wait it out for software fix since I'm most likely to get another one like this. My m8 has had a blueish tint bit never really notice it until I play with a different device for a bit.

I don't think a software update can fix this issue but since you don't notice it much I say go with it. I definitely would mind it but that's me.

Actually if you read Anandtechs review of the M9 they stated that this years screen even though the same "maybe" is not as good or as bright, calibrated etc, as the M8 was

i bought second phone and it was slight better but not as good. There used to ways to find display manufacturer but that did not work on M9. its funny but display feels like LG i wonder if they used same panel as Nexus 5.
Strange i have the m9 in my hand right now and my screen is perfect. No color disorders or angle problems. Just a very clear screen. Love the m9!
Many reports of various screen colour defects ranging from a green-yellow tint or hue, not disbelieving but mine is fine atkeast to my eyes

Agreed
Yo guys, just got a G4 today and I'm happy enough with it however coming from my G3, unless my eyes are playing tricks on me, the whites just seem to be a fair bit whiter on the G3 and the G4's display looks a lot warmer. . I'll see if I can capture it on camera, but does anybody else have this issue or could it just be the case that this is how LG intended the pannel to be?
Just to mention that I can't compare it to a display model as the phone isn't stocked in my country.
Ive looked at like 5 G4 displays and none of them are the same
Dang, so it's essentially the luck of the draw if you get a good pannel? :/
Mine looks great, no tint color at all.
I'll check my friend's later if there's inconsistency or not.
I have 2 G4's, which I have already replaced one of the 2 I have. None of the three screens are the same. Also brightness differs quite a bit between the two I currently have. lastly, one is more yellow while the other is more blue.
Its a pretty large discrepancy between them

Yep I even went to the t-mobile store and between the two on display and mine they all had a different looking screen.

Hmm... I've no idea if I should send it back and get a replacement or just simply get a S6. I really do like the phone apart from the issue.

IMO ? Getting a S6 in replace of a G4, it's a rollback.
I'm noticing that on mine too. I currently have two G4s because I still have to ship one back, but the one I'm returning has clearer and crisper whites than the one that was sent to replace my old one. But the new one I got has so far had much better battery life so I think I can deal with having the screen be slightly worse if it means the battery lasts longer.

Get it replaced the G4 screen is actually a colder than normal looking screen.
personally i prefer warm colours as its easier on the eye but if you're into your whites then they should be colder. The tint wont go away. I rcall people with one plus complaining about it. However it was a bit more blatant as in one part of the screen would have it rather than the whole one.
There is variation between screens, the brightness has been mentioned by reviewers. I think its the usual kinks from early runs of the factory cycle. people buying later will have less issues.
I have a visible light strip at the top of the display... what should I do? I say to myself I don't care but it annoys me because I keep noticing it.
Here pictures, please check them out:

do you have it too? should I send it back or do all lg g4 have this?

That's light bleed - light seeping from the backlight into the edges of the display. Happens when the display is compressed/bent during installation into the phone. Nothing you can do about it but get the phone exchanged if it bothers you that much. However, if you exchange it, it's the luck of the draw - you might get a better one or a much worse one.
Unfortunately, all LCD displays are prone to this, as manufacturers would have to reject something like 50% of them otherwise - I had to go through SIX brand-new 27" Dell monitors before I found two that I could live with - and they're still far from perfect.
I had to exchange my iPad Mini twice to get a good display, and my Nexus 9 three times. It's totally random. Got lucky with my G4 that has a perfect screen (though I had to exchange it, too, as the first one had dust stuck between the front glass and the display panel).
Manufacturers just have really low "acceptable quality" standards to maximize profits/units sold, as many people will never notice those issues.

I see thanks, I had some light bleed (I knew what it is didn't remember the english word LOL) on my N4 too but nowhere near this and it didn't seem like a solid strip more random...
Sent it back... hope I got luck with the next one, and hope Amazon is quick my current phones battery is pretty much dead...
So Hi! Im thinking about to buy a new smartphone but cant decide buy htc 10 or samsung Note 7.
I know the good points of htc 10, but i wanna hear the "bad points" too.
Why you dont recommend me to buy this phone?
+Also i wanna ask how u guys found the display of htc 10? is it colorful enough? (as far i saw in videos to me its like it "lack of colors")
Thanks
Screen looks great both in the more saturated regular mode and the accurate sRGB mode.
Let's see, these are the first things that come to mind for me:
1) Screen isn't AMOLED so no true blacks
2) Screen, while visible in daylight, isn't closed to as bright as the Galaxy screens
3) Not waterproof
4) If you wear polarized sunglasses, then portrait view is blacked out unless you have a tempered glass protector
I generally do recommend the device, but here are some caveats you should be aware of:
1) Screen is not AMOLED. I personally don't care for AMOLED, but some might find this a deal breaker.
2) Battery life is only okay. I usually get 3-5 hours of SoT, but this varies depending on what ROM I have flashed.
3) Heat. The phone gets hot. This is because it's made of aluminum and is conducting heat away from the SoC, but not everyone will appreciate it. Other phones keep cooler better I think.
4) Price. There is practically no justifying this unless you buy on contract from a carrier and get a subsidized price. I'm on Verizon, and buying from retail would not make my monthly payments cheaper, so I bought on contract and got the device at $200. The OP3 is $100 cheaper, of similar construction except thinner, and only lacks an SD card slot (which it makes up for with twice the onboard storage).
Ultimately, I only recommend this phone if you absolutely need an SD card slot, prefer LCD to AMOLED, and use your phone speakers alot (the 10 has pretty good sound with the tweeter/woofer combo). Otherwise, the OP3 is a very nice phone with more RAM and a lively dev scene here on XDA. Both are otherwise the same phone. Same SOC, same OS, similar dimensions.
Main issue is slow internal memory, emmc instead of UFS 2.0.
Look at comparison below made with androbench.

Bug, Bugs everywhere.
no RGB notification led
cannot disable flip over mute call
weak NFC and wifi
auto brightness sometime act weird
the headphone without inline volume control
missing many fancy stuff and details setting, such as more camera mode, cannot disable fast charge, no more fancy widget and app.
basically it is near the same as my Nexus experience, but nexus have much less bug and better firmware update policy.
no its own backup/data transfer app, use only google backup, end up I go for the app helium to transfer app data to the HTC 10
LCD is no where as good as my LG G3 and Nexus 5 JDI display, my HTC 10 got chinese LCD, but the sharp LCD seems much worst.
I buy it because I need a replacement immediate as my nexus 5 dead, it is cheap, if not the Note7 recall then I will buy the Note7, may be I will sold my HTC 10 when new batch of note 7 arrive
p.s. an example of some weird bug, cannot show sdcard name sometime.
I would say the lack of waterproofing would be the #1 reason to NOT buy this phone. While all other major brands, including now Apple are pushing IP67, the HTC 10 is IP53 which basically means that anything more than a splash of water will kill this phone. That sucks, but is far from a deal breaker to me.
The lack of blowing up in your pocket
I would recommend it as I have 3.
1. it has the best build quality of pretty much any maker.
2. Its faster than pretty much any other.
3. It has the best dev following most mods of any phone.
4. Turn off all the crap you dont need running and it has good battery life.
5. Its not amoled screen and I like the colors sammy boys can like amoled not everyone does.
6. It can be bought a lot cheaper with discounts and free accessories than any samsung.
7. Updates come a lot faster than most other makers usually with in 90 days.
8. You can unlock the bootloader.
9. It has the best sound of any smartphone easily add Viper4android and be amazed.
10. You can use your mounted sd card as internal storage.
11. And last but not least exploding batteries are not included.
Oh and I myself do not really care about water proof as I take care of my phone and keep it in a nice quality case.
Just my 2 cents, I bought mine directly from HTC in June. I have had to get it replaced 3 times for different issues. I always baby my devices (case, screen protector, never dropped, no water). 1st-vibration broke, 2nd-borked camera out of the box, 3rd-white burn in on screen and messed up GPS. I'm not saying these are widespread, and I really loved the phone, but I never had so many issues in such a short span.
thanks the info guys, im not say this 100% but probably ill end up with a note 7 but the main reason is display only.
Well being waterproof is a good too its not like ill go a pool with it but atleast can listen/change music in the bathtub lol
*hope dat one wont blow my leg off xD

I just sent mine in for GPS issues... I keep trying to give HTC a shot but they keep ruining potentially great phones. STILL, I prefer them to whatever else is out there on the market.
