provided you didn't inappropriately attain said device and you know basic info like Google account login you can access device admin from a computer and reset password . additionally if u made a Samsung account you can use find my phone (it has unlock option )
There is an app called RemoveLock.apk, which might be of interest depending on what you are trying to do. http://pdanet.co/help/RemoveLock.apk I think it just removes the lockscreen, it's not actually removing the password so if you do something else security-wise that would trigger a password prompt, I'm pretty sure it will still ask. It doesnt require root and seems to work on most versions of Android. I use it because of FoxFi, the VPN certificate wont install without lockscreen security setup but I have no interest in locking my phone.

My device is Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition, updated to Kitkat version, 32gb. I received free copy of Kaspersky android anti virus with pre bundle software with purchase of device. I accidentally tried to disable Kaspersky Security from device administrators & it caused to "Lock" down of my device by Pin code, which I don't know. WiFi & data packet service is disabled so no internet connection can be made to device. But can receive call & but can't open sms to read. I have my valuable 20 gb data in it which I didn't back up. I request you to please help me out so that I can remove pin or reset my pin or disable this service without making warranty void or formatting my device. My tab is in stock condition (unrooted) but I don't remember that USB debugging option is activated or not. I don't want to root nor format my device. I am not getting "Forgot Pin" option which helps to reset device via Google sign in.
My plan to recover is to get wifi/data connection activated so that I can lock down device by custom password from Android Device Manager & get it reopen. This will save me valuable data & prevent me from hard reset. I am from completely non technical background but is ready to learn & perform as per guidance.
"I plead/beg you to please help me out asap & activate my wifi/data connection."
Looking forward towards your cooperation & prompt reply.
With Samsung devices, turning on device encryption force you to use 6 characters password (alphanumeric), which is troublesome if you use your phone often.
What I found out is that after I set such password, complete the device encryption and go back to the Lock Screen setting, I can change the password to 4 digits.
Going back to encryption setting, it said I can now encrypt the device, but must use 6 characters password. But isn't my phone already encrypted? AFAIK, there is no turning off encryption once it's done.
So at this point, is my phone encrypted or not?

The phone is encrypted but like you said you cannot permanently decrypt the phone once the process is completed.

Thanks for the info.
I am curious why initially the device requires alphanumeric passwords (which I created), but once encryption is done, I can go back to the "Lock Screen" and change it to just numeric password. I believe this will NOT remove encryption, but for confirmation, want to check if the encryption is still there.

I had to un-encrypt my phone by unrooting via Oden. Once i Odened then you have to do a factory reset and you are un-encrypted for good.
Somehow my password pattern is suddenly not detectable and it shows as wrong password. As there is no more option in lollipop for "forgot password" and using the gmail account to log in. How do I reset the password on a HTC M8 without doing a reset? I've tried logging into the google account, and I can use the "find" option in the device manager to locate the device, but if i press the "lock" button and try to enter a new password, for a split second it says "We have sent a lock request to the device", but then it says "Since Google has verified that a screen lock is already set, the password you entered won't be needed." Wtf is going on? I am stuck with a pattern locked phone of whose password i know but the phone doesnt detect it anymore. Is there another way to reset the password?

Well.......
Let me start by saying that this is a delicate matter, what if the device is stolen and somebody wants to get the info or device to work without wiping it. I know that this is probably not your intention and that it is hard to prove otherwise. But the possibility could be there in the worst case scenario !
Now don't get the above personal, it's written from another point of view, as i am running HTC phones for the past 6 years and never encountered this all of a sudden at any point. So from my point of view i find it difficult to believe.
To get to your point ...... not sure if it can be done otherwise but to reset the device. Depends if it's rooted or not for instance ?
Cheers

According to the story, looks like either : 3rd party apps are interfering (can also be malware/virus) OR someone physically got hold of the device and changed the password(perhaps he thinks its his own)
Try restarting the device while holding the volume up button only, android will go into safe mode and disable all 3rd party apps. If the password still doesn't work, then you have 2 options:
1) if S-ON : factory reset and lose all user data
2) if S-OFF or bootloader unlocked: remove password (this is the most details I can give without being an accomplice)
Hi friends, Yesterday i just tried to change my lock pin on my M9 (running latest naugat)but somehow i forgot it after setting it up.(stupid me). Then i tried to use android device manager to clear the pin .After signing in into manager,i could see my device and it presented couple of options. One of then was LOCK.After entering into Lock, Android device manager prompted me to enter temporary password and i entered it.But it didn't work.
At one point i thought i was going to loose all of my pics, data. But fortunately somehow i managed to enter the right pin after couple of tries.
So can't android manager be used to clear the pin on M9?I would like to know if in future someone gets into this kind of problem. Thanks
Android manager is basically an emergency lock out security app which gives you the ability to remotely lock the device and destroy the private data on it before it is compromised, effectively making the device 'useless' until it is flashed. It doesn't protect the phone except for reporting its location if connected to the Internet, it protects only the data on the phone. Nothing more.

Thanks for the reply. So is there any way to recover phone via google account login without loosing data or pictures?
So I have got kind of a strange buggy problem. I have an LG G4 with Android 6.0. I recently encrypted my phone with the standard Android encryption method. I used a six character password for this. After about a month my phone prompted that I had to change my password because it had expired. I must change the password in order to gain entry to the phone. So, I click 'change password', type in my old password, click continue and then it returns me to the lock screen?! Locked! It never actually lets me change my password. So I'm kinda stuck.
I tried using software like dr.fone to gain entry to at least save my files, but my phones default pc connection setting is charging and since I can't gain entry, I can't set it to MTP sharing. So I can't even gain entry through my PC.
Is this a known bug? I couldn't find anything on the internet about this. Anybody have any idea? I know I can just factory reset, but I really want to try saving my files. There's some pretty important stuff on my phone.
Thanks in advance,
Greetings,
Luca

Bootloader is locked I assume.
So your phone will not let you log in until you change the password but will not let you change the password
