Random folders created multiple times a day - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

Hi
I've got a MZP with a 128gb SD card and I notice that the SD card is full of folders with nothing in them but it's a pain in the neck trying to browse to a specific folder.
I'm.not sure what's creating these folders and battery life has virtually halved since this started happening.
Any ideas?

Gotta be a bad app or a seemingly good one with a trojan.

Nothing stands out so far. No dodgy apps from other sources and also have BitDefender running storage scans.
Not sure if this is related, but this has happened twice in the last month, but when I restart my phone I get a "Decryption Failed" message. Removing the SD Card and restarting again gets the phone back to normal and then I just manually insert the SD card and mount it.

I think it is. Your phone is encrypted? Never did that.

Yes. I think it turns on Encryption by default if you set a PIN or password and there is no way to turn it off - at least nothing obvious that I can see.
What I don't get is that usage seems to be high for Android System - this was never the case previously. The list of included packages does not have any 3rd party apps or anything but then again I'm not really sure what I should be looking for.
Battery at 62% right now with 9 hours of projected usage - this is way lower than what im used to with this phone.

Couldn't attach screenshots in the last post. Sorry.

Probably a HW failure or memory.

So between the last post and today, I got the Nougat update and things have been much more stable since the update.
I don't seem to have any new folders being created and battery life is pretty much close to good with around 6.5 - 7 hours SOT.
I also haven't had any crazy shutdowns so I guess its all good.

SD Card seems to be unmounting automatically...

Well, basically as the title says. This's happened several times to me already. Say I'll turn my phone on (from standby) I'll get a popup error saying that the backup was unable to complete because no SD card was found. Next, the music application won't load the songs because those're all stored on the card. Same for Photos/Gallery. When I go to ES File Explorer, the 'sdcard' folder reports that it is empty.
There hasn't been a pattern that I discovered. This just happened now when I woke up (phone left charging overnight; Wi-Fi & Sync enabled) and I decided to come post here. Happened again yesterday afternoon when I got my phone out to play some music on the way home.
Every once in a while, I'd get lucky and the files would show up by themselves, but the only fool-proof way I've found to get the phone working properly again is a restart, which takes several minutes to do.
I am NOT running any task manager (well, I was but when this problem started up I checked another thread which recommended to remove the task manager, so I did).
Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Do you know of a fix, or is it just me?
Mine's done this a couple of times, but I've put it down to the SD card not being quite pushed home properly. Worth taking it out and cleaning the contacts.
Nope, that doesn't work. I re-inserted it yesterday (contacts were clean) and this morning woke up with the same problem.
Please tell me this isn't just happening to me, cause it'll be a right pain in the ass to have this repaired (sending abroad/etc).
Is the SD Card the one you got with the phone (4Gb) or another make/model size? Please include details so others can help more.
I have left the given Samsung Class 2 4Gb SD card in mine and I have never had any issues with the SD Card unmounting. This is not saying it won't happen, but for me it has been fine. I was going to upgrade to my other Sandisk 16Gb Class 2 that used to be in my Touch Pro, but will do that hopefully this evening.
So all I can guess is either a faulty card or some issue with Class/Size/Manufacturer of Card (if you changed from the Samsung one) ?
It's the stock 4GB card that came pre-installed in the phone. Phone's unlocked too, bought from Clove. If it helps/is relevant: when I loaded up the camera it gave an error saying something like 'no sufficient read permissions for SD card'*, maybe that'd be a clue to the problem.
*I can't quote exactly cause I've since restarted the phone and can't remember it word for word. If/when this happens again I'll post the exact error.
EDIT: There, it just happened again. Restarted the phone not even an hour ago, it's getting ridiculous. Anyway, the error from the camera reads "Unable to save file to SD card due to insufficient file permissions".
FWIW, when I go to SD & Phone Storage settings i CAN see the total and available space on the card. It's just completely inaccessible by the programs. Have also tried the 'SDMount' widget, did absolutely nothing.
Happens to me too but only when I've been letting go of my phone to put it down rather than placing it down, or if I have to drop it on my bed or chair quick.
Happened to me a lot too when I was using one of the lock screen info apps, to get my calendar info on the lock screen. Uninstalled and the SD card problem went away.

Never used that :/
I've uninstalled all apps that seemingly access the SD card and will start reinstalling one by one to see if the problem does come back. Only way I could think of.
It is happening to me also. The last 3 days is doing it at least twice a day , i have the desire almost one month and neved had this problem earlier.
And i though it was something i did.
i had the same camera permissions problem. restarted and havnt seen it again since. 4gb card that came with the unbranded device. no idea what caused it, could be any number off new apps etc :S
I've got the same problem.
I've already tried to reformat my SDcard, but the problem still exists. Another problem when the SD card unmounts, is the CPU usage. This rises to ~10% constantly. Probably cause of this are apps which are trying to write to my SDcard.
Still no solution found, maybe I'll try another SD card in a couple of days.
FWIW, I gave up on the stock card and copied all my stuff over to another 4GB card I had running around (straight copy) and it seems to be working fine now. Haven't had a problem yet, although it hasn't even been 24 hours.
Will report back if/when something comes up, and when I start re-installing the apps that I previously removed.
I wrote to HTC earlier yesterday describing the same problem, and I just received this reply:
Dear Mr.Matthew Thank you for contacting HTC. Maybe you mount it on the pc to copy nd paste something and you forgot to unmount it from the pc.. Are you using the inbox SD card? Did you install any third party applications to the phone? Please use the phone in Safe Mode. Safe mode terminates all installed running applications, in case if they caused this issue. Please backup what you have on the SD Card and Format it. If you have any other inquiries, don’t hesitate to contact us again. Please note that you can contact us via support line. Only thing I have not yet tried is the Safe Mode. Will see if it needs to get to that.
i had this issue when I installed 'ebuddy'... uninstalled it and the problem is no more
It's started to occur on mine at least twice daily now, it wasn't so before about 4 days back. I've just actually restarted the device on getting such an error and apps complaining that they can't read/write to the SD card. Really after some sort of fix here.

You're right it seems that was my problem too.
I got rid off ebuddy and all is fine now
I've had this problem once so far, and reading the reply from HTC reminds me that I have unplugged my phone from my mac without unmounting it a few times...
I am also having this issue and have ebuddy installed! I shall uninstall it and see if it fixes it! I really hope it does because its starting to get annoying
I too have ebuddy installed and shall also try removing it and see if that fixes it!
I don't have ebuddy installed but just experienced the SD card error with the camera today.

External sdcard woes

Before owning the Note 2, I had the S3. The problem with the scared happens on both phones.
When I first got the Note, I removed the sdcard from the S3 and put it straight into the Note.
No media showed up. Formatted in phone, transferred media, all working as it should.
Today, add a video to card, doesn't show. Add a photo, doesn't show.
Format card, transfer media. Nothing shows up.
Am reluctant to buy another card as I tried three Cards in the S3, and the problem was present with all of them.
PS using root explorer I can find all the media, and play them in their respective apps.

solution might be here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410262
Thanks, for some reason that works for my videos, but not with photos and music!!!!
And that is more of a workaround than a solution. Ideally I would like for it to work as it should. Impossible for me to go back to stock as I will always need root to vieww my media(ok, I will probably always be rooted, but I want the option)
Edit: tried again and my music and photos are now showing (using Directory Bind)

Ive had issues like this on my EVO. Try installing a "media scan" app from the market. It rescans all media content on the phone and then if you want you can remove the app after its done. I had 2 years worth of photos on my 16GB SD class 10 and no pictures or video thumbnails / pictures at all would show. Ran the app and fixed all the issues.
I did try a couple of those apps yesterday.I dont know if either one worked.I mean I know nothing showed up, but it was as though they never actually run.
Same issue
:crying:
I tried formatting several times and copied the data back, nothing helped. Also copying files from my comp to the sd card and internal storage in the phone is very slow. I bought the device yesterday, its stock unrooted.
I don't believe media (pictures/video) show up until mediascanner detects them and sticks in some internal database.
So just copying files onto your external card and popping it in isn't going to work.
media scanner is normally triggered during a reboot, and some apps can trigger it. (generally via 'rescan media' buttons).
Also make sure you don't have a .nomedia file there, as that causes media scanner to skip the directory.
( media scanner can really grind on directories with tons of files )

I tried a different memory card from my old Sensation and it read the files perfectly... can any of you help me with the copying speed.. it took me 35 mins to copy 1.20GB... just to be sure i i tried to copy the same date using the same data cable and the same usb port, onto my wildfire, and it copied it pretty fast. Any idea ?

It sounds like the Sensation card just has slower transfer rates. While your wildfire has faster transfer rates but you are experience issues on the phone side.
Just to confirm, you have formatted both cards the same way and one works and the other doesn't? If possible try to format the card from the phone. Have you tried a sandisk card?

Both the cards are Sandisk 8gb cards, both formatted on the Note 2. I transferred data to card A when its in the wildfire, i formatted the card and put it in the note and formatted it again, and tried to copy the same data to card A, it takes more than 3times the amount of time... data transfer has been slow to the card while its in the note
I have read somewhere that there is a " .nomedia " folder somewhere. Delete that and see what happens.

Also on top of that, when you formatted the SDCard did you format in the PC or in your phone through recovery? You will want to format through recovery.
I would recommend upgrading to an ext partition and then formatting again (if you don't need the ext). I have found that even formatting the SDCard on some roms (because the way they work) it doesn't wipe everything and upgrading the to ext actually changes the file system of the SDCard rather than a quick format. Then only copy your media back to the card. Dont copy everything like .android, data, and stuff like that. Just what you want to keep.

Is there any chance you have a counterfeit Sandisk card? Did you buy it from an authorized dealer? If buying from Amazon make sure you only purchase directly from amazon, LLC and not a third party vendor.
For reference which sandisk card do you have what class is it rated at?
Daniel
No the card is legit, i got it in the box when i bought the HTC Sensation and worked fine on the sensation. It has good copying speed if i put it in another device like my wildfire even now. I checked copying speeds yesterday using the same card in my wildfire and my new note, but it takes forever to copy data to the card while its in the Note. I have not rooted my Note yet. Its factory stock as of now.

Tried that, and it worked. thanks.... But still having data transfer speed issues... i copied data to the internal memory and even that is slow... this problem is not limited to only my sd card, but also the internal memory
If your internal memory is slow I would consider that cause for concern. Perhaps try running benchmarks and comparing your results to those in the benchmark thread. It may be worth returning it for another phone if you can't find a solution soon.

Isn't the speed difference just to do with the way the Note 2 connects to the pc? I.E MTP as opposed to mass storage? I seem to recall my G.F's original Note is dog slow at data transfer in MTP but much faster in USB mode....shame the Note 2 can't do this, it's one of my reservations about buying it.

Now it makes sense to me, thanks :good:
Is there any way to connect in USB mode rather than MTP??
Can I ask if anyone else suffers from the same problem as raised in the OP?
I would imagine its not "the norm" and yet I have had the same issue on both the S3 and Note 2.
Whilst, it is now working, I am having to use Directory Bind, for it to do so.
I put in a new 64GB card on Saturday, recognised straight away in Settings/Storage, formatted fine in the phone giving me 59+GB of free space.
Put media on it...nothing shows.
I cant ever see my phone not being rooted so it can be worked around, but it just seems strange that I have had this on both phones and yet nobody else seems to suffer from it.

For whatever reason I don't think Samsung enabled USB mass storage mode on either the S3 or the Note 2. It's the one thing that's holding me back from buying one at the moment because I use iTunes Agent to sync with iTunes, and that requires the device to be in mass storage mode when connected to the pc (or you can take the sd card out and put it in a reader, but I don't like to take the back off too many times as most phones end up getting really creaky). It's a real shame because I'm just itching to get one.
Have a look in the GS3 forum - I think there's a thread where someone has created an app that enables you to toggle USB mass storage mode, but I think you might have to be rooted and have a custom kernel. Don't quote me, that's from memory

There are a couple of threads about this I think now. I browsed some last night. Sorry, I'm only on my phone at the moment so it's a bit awkward to try and find a link for you (what with having a Sensation with only a 4.3" screen They'll be on the first page or two I think.
My girlfriend's original Note had a similar problem with photos and media after connecting an external hard drive. Going into settings/apps and clearing data on the media storage app followed by a reboot sorted the problem for her.

Media server battery drain

Hi ZL users I've been very happy with my phone but having issues with battery drain.
I know its a known android issue but is anyone else having this problem with media server draining the battery on the ZL?? I'm coming from Nexus 4 aokp rom and it didn't have this problem.
Media server takes up almost as much as the screen sometimes more...
Do any of you have the same issue?? Have you fixed it?? If so what was the fix??
I've tried to flash different firmware version(latest and oldest) and tried to use the phone without installing any 3rd party apps but the media server is still using as much as the screen.
I have firmware 10.1.1.A.1.253.
Try flashing the 4.1.2 version 307, for me its the best on battery life , if not try the 4.2.2 and see if it still happens.
I tried 4.2.2 and it didn't help.. I don't know why but its doing it on every firmware. Also my screen on time is about 3 hours. Whats every one else getting??

to be sure I flash the 4.2.2 and yes thats a problem.
I tried 4.2.2 media server still takes up a lot of the battery.
3 hours of screen on time is a problem???
So how long of a screen on time is normal??
I read some threads that it may cause from media data in sdcard. Try moving your data from sdcard and format it with your phone. Test your phone without your media data in sdcard. If it work then try moving your media data back to sdcard and see.

I read that too but I don't have an mSD card inserted on my phone... I love the phone but I can barely use it because of this issue.
I have searched a lot on forums a while back regarding this MediaServer battery drain and it is not as bad as everyone is making it out to be. The MediaServer is not something with the Sony stock firmware but it is a service used by the Android operating system. It is practically always in use either for indexing files on your phone/tablet or for many other things.
I'm copying and pasting something from another forum.
"Media Server is the set of operating system functions which underlies all media operations on the device. So, when you use PowerAmp or GooglePlay to listen to music (on your device or streaming), it is Media Server which actually does the work. When you use TuneIn to stream internet radio, it is Media Server which actually does the work. And so on.
Apps like those mentioned above serve merely as "front ends" which put a pretty user interface on the operating system's media functions.
Taking this info into account, maybe Media Server's battery usage no longer seems inappropriate?"
That being said, MediaServer is a crucial part of the operating system and it needs to be there for your phone to perform normally.

SD card stopped writing

So this started Friday morning but I didn't know what the issue was. I use my SD card for caching music from my All Access Google Play music subscription, and I was actually streaming non-downloaded music at the time, and everything stopped working, and I kept getting errors about not being able to download. Didn't think much of it. Did the standard Routine, reboot, didn't work, so I cleared cache and uninstalled updates on play music and the service was working again and I didn't think about it again until I tried to take a picture later in the evening and got this in the gallery instead of the picture
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3418912&d=1437899706
Again I just did the standard stuff, rebooted, cleared cache and data to the gallery and camera app, but this time nothing was working. I finally decided to change my save location from my SD to my internal storage, and my pictures started saving again. So I connected the dots to what happened with Google Play Music earlier in the day, and checked my downloads, and nothing was downloaded anymore, option to save to SD was grayed out. Naturally I tried to format with the card in the phone, and it acted like it worked ok, but still showed I only had 11gb left of space, and still wouldn't work with anything. So I stuck it in my PC, and windows errors every time I try to format it. I tried with the default windows 8 formatting tool, I've tried with third party tools, same thing, won't format. Card appears to be read only now. How does this happen? It's the free 32GB card I got from LG with the extra battery and charging case I got for buying a G4 before June 30th. In fact I've only had this SD card for maybe a month. Is this some lolipop permissions keeping me from formatting it or is it hosed? I remember reading something about Google changing permissions on the SD with kitkat, but I also read they changed back with lolipop. I also read that LG didn't seem to notice they changed back and kept things the way they were with kitkat. If that's the case how do I take ownership of the whole card so I can format it?
I've had the same problem!

I have no idea of the answer yet but if I find one I'll let you know. But this has happened to 3 different micro sd cards in my LG G4! I don't think it's an android issue I think it's an LG g4 issue. But I'm going to investigate further. Brand new sd cards working fine for a few days then rendered read only and unable to format even on a laptop!
This literally just happened to my 32gb card received with the bundle. Any update?
I had the same issue with a A-Data 128GB UHS-U1. After a month of usage it wouldn't mount on my phone. After trying to format via various means (Disk Management, Partition Magic, SD Formatter) I found my card was set to read-only and nothing would change that. I've had very good experiences with A-Data before so I chalked it up to a manufacturing defectand filed a RMA on the lifetime warranty. Ive got a spare 16GB popped in to see if it's the phone doing it (Also A-Data)., I hope its not the G4 because I love the phone. But if it is I'm not wasting another SD Card and buying another phone.
Sounds like a corrupt sd card somehow.
I have the same issue with a SanDisk 200GB Card as discussed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/help/phone-upside-screen-off-t3227335
So it's the G4 that is killing the cards?
It's one of 2 things: Either manufacturing defects (which seems more likely) Or a G4 issue (In this case I would expect the issue to be more widespread then the low number of posts). The solution for some seems to be repartitioning the SD card, in my case though it reverts back even after the partitioning, SD Formatter indicates its stuck in read only.
It can also be some of the cards don't work well with the heat the G4 generates. On mines, it doesn't indicate read only but it seems I can't format or write to the card but I can delete from the card fine... I just tried SD Formatter and it basically shows what's attached, I thought only full size SD cards had the write protect switch, is there any software that can make the card write protected or not?

That's the exact same error message I got with SD Formatter, You could try with using partitioning software to see if that works, it was a no go for me. Regarding the heat, that could be an issue too, compared to my previous phone, the G4 runs really hot.
Any Partition software you recommend at it seems MiniTool Partition Wizard doesn't recognize etxfs as a filesystem. The G4 does run pretty hot, so much for the claims of the cards claiming to be resistant to everything...
I did try the Windows Disk Management Tool, but even that can't fix it. Well to be fair, no phone runs as hot as the G4 from my experience, guess LG still makes crap...
Has anyone tried the sd card fix floating around the g4 forum...it's posted at least once in the threads by micromod777 in tmo g4 forum...also to those with unlocked bl have you tried formatting in twrp?
Happened to me too. (SD from promo) I had to replace it. Nothing can be done about it. SD is trashed.

LG aka Lucky Goldstar had always been a low-end brand. The only reason I've switched from Motorola is because of the microSD slot and the removeable battery. Samsung's are more for looks too..

Got a link to the sd card fix?
Some good news, A-Data notified me that they be replacing my micro-sd no strings attached. Sad news is that I'm tried of hardware issues on Android devices. I considered the Moto X Pure and the Nexus 6P, but being a Canadian, I'm getting royally shafted by exchange rates, ended up getting an iPhone 6s.
Same exact issue here with the 32gb card I received free from the promo.
I got ahold of LG and they replaced it. I bought a much nicer sandisk uhs 64gb card while I waited and when the replacement came I put it in the wife's gs5, that was 3 months ago and it's still working so hopefully it'll continue to work

The replacement SanDisk 200GB MicroSD card I put in on October 30, 2015 had problems on November 17, 2015.

I really think there was something wrong with the previous firmwares. My play music would wipe at least once a month and reading off the card was always sluggish. Ever since the 81010o update everything is fine, and I can take my card out and reinsert it and play music won't delete my music. Unfortunately I believe the previous firmwares were killing cards too

All my pictures were deleted but only from SD card

:crying: like the title says. Literally every other file on my phone is intact... but all my pictures were deleted only from my SD Card, man this has me stressed. I take a ton of photos and my last backup was 2 weeks ago
Can someone help me investigate this? TBH I'm not sure what happened. the last time i saw my pictures were several hours ago. I'm running android 7.0 if that matters on leedroid. I installed simple gallery app, deleted about 40 pics and that was that. I could still see the rest of my pics. fast forward a few hours later, I go looking for a folder in my DCIM folder with pics from my nexus 6p and non of my micro sd cards pictures are there. they are all done.
so far i've mounted my the 10 as mass storage via TWRP and ran recuva on the card searching for pictures with deep scan mode. makes this mystery more interesting is it found only 3 files! if you know anything about PCs if something is deleted it should still be present right? b/c it's not really deleted yet.
Sorry mate that I don't have a solution that you haven't tried. I know it doesn't help now, but I use the Mega app with a free 50GB account to back up my pictures and videos automatically when I'm on WiFi.
Good luck, I hope you find a way.
There are Android apps for recovery too - I doubt if they would help better than Recuva and I don't know any in particular to suggest. Also I don't know if you'd have better luck on the PC with the card mounted directly instead of via MTP but it's definitely worth a try.

Just tried card mounted with recuva and deep scan. also tried photorec.
what's strange is recuva found a ton of deleted files but it cannot find my pictures from DCIM folder. not even in poor or unrecoverable state..... something is fishy about that.

I wouldn't read too much into that. To be fair, be vigilant as well but it doesn't mean anything suspicious is going on. Although I haven't had this happen on my HTC 10 yet, on my previous four Android phones my MicroSD cards would sometimes become corrupted or lose files even when I'm not writing anything to them.
One time on the LG G3 (and this is really bizarre) just flashing a TOT (LG provided stock ROM file on the PC) wiped my MicroSD completely, and I had flashed TOTs hundreds of times on both my LG phone and tablet without that happening. Just pointing out that without further evidence, the loss of the files themselves doesn't necessarily mean anything other than the general relative unreliability of MicroSD cards compared to internal storage technology.

I see what you mean but just trying to figure out the point of failure. Can't have this happen so still thinking to see what went wrong... unless it was SD failure of some sort.
