So... I have had some wierd issues with every aosp rom I have tried to install (CM 6.1 RC2 and ShadowROM)
I used shadowROM for awhile in the past, but have long since moved over to sense roms. When I went to give CM a try something weird happened. The wallpaper I had wayyy back when I used shadowROM was the default when I booted up for the first time, and ALL of my apps started re-downloading from the market on their own... the ones I used on shadowROM only.
I have been doing a Full wipe... meaning Cache Partition ->Wipe Data/Factory Reset->Wipe Dalvik ect..
So I am not sure why this is happening... any ideas? I usually run sense roms, but I would like to try out some AOSP whenever I get the chance. The problem with this is things just run wierd, and I can't flash any themes without encountering issues. Has this happened to anyone?
It has - something similar.
I believe those AOSP ROMs you flashed previously utilize space on the SD card to park files. I know certain of them (when enabled by ROM and/or kernel) use the SD for swap space.
As such, there are 'stray' files on the SD card, in folders, used by and left over from prior AOSP ROMs.

which would mean that, to fix the issue I would need to format my sd card?
I do have an 512mb EXT4 partition w/ 32mb swap

Depends on whether you want to keep those files. Perhaps copy entire SD contents to PC so you'll have them, & reformat it from the PC as FAT32 and start over. If you need stuff from the card, you have it on the PC and can copy what you want/need back.

sounds like a normal thing to me, I've never had any problems. The wifes droid does it too. as far as restoring programs automatically I mean, I thought it was a feature?

You probably had the "backup apps through google" option checked during initial setup. If you select this on an AOSP rom, it will reinstall all your apps for you. It's a feature, if you don't want it to do that, just deselect it during the initial setup.

No, I actually made sure I did not check it because I thought that could be the case
I think it does have to do with the issue above (the sd card), since my wallpaper is being restored as well.
well now that I remember I'm pretty sure every aosp rom I've flashed in the past, never used any backup for apps, it had done this

Hi everybody!
I've a Desire with stock rom 2.3 (and no root yet) and it worked fine until last week.
If I try to install a new app I receive an error about free memory space. I've already try to move all apps to sd but nothing, I can't install anything.
I've try also to do an hard reset and fully wipe/factory reset (from recovery) and for a while it seems to works, but if I install some apps the problem come back.
Why? What can I do?
A friend suggest that maybe there are some directory in filesystem from older app (now unistalled) and, since I haven't root permession, I can't remove them. With root permission can I fix it?

I flashed a custom rom on my desire which used the sd card as internal storage. Problem solved.

Read this guide to s-off, and install a custom recovery
Use this guide to create a 1gb ext4 partition on your sd card. No swap.
Download a custom rom from the htc desire dev section and flash it. I would recommend milwilds redux rom. It will automatically install apps to the parittion and you will have space.

Also, before you flash the Rom, best to flash recommended hboot if necessary, read the first post or search each thread.
This way you use your internal memory more efficiently.

Factory reset only deletes user data.
When you bought it, you didn't have apps installed, and probably apps were smaller back then.
What are you trying to say? That you want to flash a stock rooted ROM?

All my apps were installed somewhere in filesystem (maybe in /system?). My question is: when I do a factory reset, what I'm going to erase? Only user data in user directories, or all content of every system directory? (of course, not system files).
I'm only trying to understand why when I bought the phone I've a "lot" of space for my app and now, after a factory reset, I've not enough free space to install more then 2/3.

A factory reset will wipe /data, dalvik cache and /cache.
When did you buy your phone? I remember that, when I first bought my Desire, facebook was only 8mbin size, and moved to sd, it only took 2 mb of internal memory. Plus, large apps require large dalvik cache. That's why your memory gets filled so easily.
You can resolve easily and keeping your stock ROM (but you'll need a FAST microSD card, my 32GB is class 10):
1) Root and s-off your device
2) Format your microSD with an EXT2, EXT3 or EXT4 partition of 1GB, then the rest as FAT32 (you can do it directly from phone using the 4ext recovery, or you can format the card from PC using a tool for partitioning which supports linux formats... I don't know if I can mention names in this thread).
3) Install INT2EXT or INT2EXT+ from recovery.
4) You'll have 1GB internal memory with no out-of-space problems.
That's all
Stock kernel doesn't support ext4 nor ext3, use only ext2 if u want to keep it.
Anyway, I believe that supernova ROM would be a much better option, it's basically stock GB made by HTC with some tweaks and script for more space.

yes what your seeing is caused by the apps being a lot bigger now. Facebook is a lot bigger.
And its impossible for your apps to be going to system. You'll have to root and use a2sd

I've install over 40 apps until this problem, including big app like FB.. strange things...
So, how much memory I have?
Rom 4.x for desire has a different partitions? If I just flash a new rom (like 4.0/4.1), will I fix this problem?

You need a rom with an a2sd script, regardless of it being GB, ICS or JB.
Good, I will search in subforum for a new rom.
Maybe it's a bit OT, but JB rom are stable enough for daily use? Can you suggest me a JB rom with a2sd script? (or even ICS, if JB is not stable enough).

I use jb as a daily driver. The ROM in my sig is the most stable jb ROM I've tried. It has very few soft reboots and has decent speed. It also has a2sd. (Activated through terminal after flashing rom)
However if you really need stability, speed and reliability I would highly recommend using gingerbread. Mildwilds ROMs are great and most of them have an a2sd script as well, which is automatically activated. Try the one based on redux.

I have a similar problem to this. I own a HTC Desire that is rooted, with Clockworkmod recovery environment, and I got it running Cyanogen mod 7.2.0.1.
So I was reading around this problem, and there are several solutions. It seems the most foolproof way is to format your SD card and partition it so that you have an EXT3 partition, and a FAT32 partition as has already been suggested here.. This way you can use an app to fool your phone into thinking that it has the EXT3 partition of the SD card to use for internal storage as well as the 150MB of internal storage it comes with. I had an 8GB SD card so I did a split of 2GB for the EXT3 partition, and 6GB for storage of music, photos, etc. etc. I followed this handy guide to do it, and it worked a treat: (sorry, have been unable to post an external link as I'm a new user.. maybe I can post this later).
When I rebooted my phone, sure enough, it showed 2GB+ of internal storage, and I can install all the apps I want. However, I'm experiencing apps hanging and crashing all the time, and I know it was caused by this most recent change. Prior to this, Cyanogenmod was running just fine! I've read a bit more into since doing this, and a lot of people reckon you shouldn't use more than a 512MB SD card partition, as anything over this causes performance issues. Others disagree, and think that anything 2GB or below should be fine. Presumably the apps hanging/crashing is because there is fragmentation of data between the SD card EXT3 partition and the actual 150MB internal storage.
It's frustrating, as other than this the phone is still a very decent handset despite it's age... it's really the storage letting it down. Before I try factory resetting (again!) and going back and trying a 512MB partition, (or just going back to having only 2 apps installed!), has any one else had experience of this?

well,I don't use gingerbread anymore.but I can say that you can't experience a good performance to use both internal and external (sd-ext) partitions to use and install your apps. better choice is to use one of them.use default a2sd of rom,or use another script to install apps only in sd-ext partition. I have used and tested a lot of roms (GB-ICS-JB) and I can say in my experiences, that you don't have problem to use an sd-ext partition with about 1.5 - 2 gb size.you can see the recommendation of devs in first post of topics, and they tell us what is the minimum-maximum size for the best performance. sorry,i can't search and give you the links,but I just had a really good smoothness and speed with some scripts that you can try them: like mounts2sd, ad2sdx,... you can find link of them with search. and you can use cm7 int2sd version...but it has a bigger size than normal cm7. here is this topic : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357257

Which guide did you use to partition, should be done with gparted or 4ext recovery.
-Ext4 should also be slightly faster than ext3.
-Anything up to 2gb is sufficient. Don't know where you read about limiting it to 512mb. The whole idea is to be able to install more apps on the partition, 512mb will fill up a lot quicker than 2gb...
-you can use space more efficiently by s-off and changing hboot, so you have more than 150 MB of internal. You are currently on stock hboot and have a lot of free wasted space on your /system partition
-depending on your Rom, stick with a single a2sd script, it may be built in or need to be activated, read the Rom thread. Then let it do it's job to move apps to the partition

Thank you. I've been searching for some time
Flashed slimbean via freegee/cwm. All works fine however, the available memory shows ~20GB with a total of 23GB. The 23GB is the same as what was available with the stock firmware.
Should I have increased my memory due to slimbean being much smaller than the stock?
Or is this a case of the locked bootloader and the original rom still taking up its own space and I just boot into slimbean due to loki, thus I only have the 23GB to work with to put a ROM on and apps, etc.?

To answer my own question, possibly. I need to format system in cwm if I want the old ROM gone, but is that ok to do on the OGP?
formating system + works
after more reading, for anyone else who is curious, I found that formatting some of the partitions is required. If you are on stock and don't format anything and install a new rom, that rom will be put in a new folder which will take away ~3GB of space. After formatting a few of the partitions the new ROM installed properly and I have back the 23.3GB of space.

A friend of mine has this phone (Wildfire S) and I has become frustrated at the very limited storage for apps.
I have rooted phones previously myself (Xperia X10 and Xperia S) and used custom ROMs on them, but I don't have a clue how to do this on the HTC Wildfire S, OR which custom ROMs are decent. Are the KitKat 4.4 ROMs good/speedy enough for daily use?
If anyone could provide a simple way of rooting and using a custom ROM on this phone which allows more app storage space (such as on the SD card) that would be fantastic!

Sorry for responding to my own post, but I've now successfully unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone, but I was left confused by some issues that I can't find the answers to:
With my own previous phones, Sony Xperia X10 and Xperia S, I have rooted those and run custom ROMs and kernels. However, when looking for a custom ROM for the Wildfire S, there don't seem to be any kernels. Does this mean I can use any custom ROM, be it Gingerbread 2.3 to KitKat 4.4 with the same CWM Recovery that I have on the phone right now when I rooted it? Are the kernels built in to the ROMs that are downloaded?
Also another question is how do I go about increasing the storage space on the phone now that I have rooted (be it on either the stock ROM or a Custom ROM)? My friend has a 2GB MicroSD card in the phone. If I was to install a KitKat ROM for example, how could I make sure the apps could be installed and run from the SD Card? What's an easy way to allocate a portion of the 2GB for apps??
Finally, which ROM would you recommend trying on the phone rather than the stock ROM, which is not sluggish but also very functional?
So basically to sum up:
Do I need to flash kernels to use custom ROMs?
How do I increase the storage size so that many more apps can be installed?
What is a nice, fast custom ROM that you would recommend?
I'd appreciate any information to help me on this one. Like I said, with my own personal phones, which have always been Sonys, I've got used to the rooting methods on those, but I had a lot of questions with this phone so would be grateful if somebody could help get this phone to a more functional standard.

No you don't need to flash any kernels if you don't want to.
Use int2ext or Link2SD. Search about them.
The answer to the last question depends on your needs and you will have to try a bit yourself. You can start with CM10.

Every ROM comes with its own kernel and most of them are overclockable. But overclocking to 800 MHz will not be a good idea if you don't want random reboots. Overclocking upto 768MHz is probably fine.
Int2ext is a script and you can flash it and forget. But Link2SD is an app which has an interface. Though it requires more configuring, it gives control on what to move and not to move and also it works in every rom I tried. I personally use Link2SD.

No, you don't have to flash the boot.img files. They are inside the ROM zips that you will download. You will just need to flash the rom via recovery (ofcourse after wiping).
Link2SD is just an application, you can install it any time but you still have to partition your memory card.

Thanks for the heads-up, I have since figured out I do not need to flash boot.img.
Am I able to use the 2GB card with INT2EXT? I can't quite figure out how to set up a partition.

Thanks - I have just formatted the SD card in CWM Recovery, as I don't have a MicroSD reader in order to format on my PC. Will this format it correctly so that FAT32 is the first partition and the second EXT2?

I have partitioned the SD card using multiple different CWM recoveries and formatted the SD-EXT partition. However, whenever I flash any INT2EXT through CWM Recovery, the ROM I am using is always messed up. One ROM I try for example, after a long bootup, just has endless FCs, starting with .com.android.phone.
If I don't flash INT2EXT, it works but obviously I have very little storage.
Don't know where I am going wrong on this one. Any ideas?

Are you sure you have really two partitions on the sd-card? I have never partitioned through cwm so don't know the exact procedure. You can mount the sdcard to computer via the usb cable. BTW you have to flash the script right after flashing rom. And have you tried link2sd?

I am as sure as I can be that I have two partitions, because when I mount the USB storage so I can access it in Windows, the partition size is much smaller (i.e - if I create a 512MB EXT partition through CWM, Windows shows the 2GB capacity as 1.4-ish GB) However, CWM doesn't give me any indication on which type of EXT partition I am creating. I would like to create an EXT4 one, but it doesn't seem to give me the option. I can't seem to be able to see the partitions in Windows when I mount the USB storage either. I just see the FAT32 partition in Windows Disk Management.
As another update, I tried Link2SD instead of INT2EXT this morning. It picked up the fact I have another partition, but it asks me which type it is (EXT2, EXT3, etc) and as I do not know, I may be picking the wrong options. Anyway I think I managed to get apps installed into the EXT partition, but in Android's storage settings, it still shows 150MB internal storage - is this correct? When I see screenshots of others using tools like INT2EXT or Link2SD, their Storage settings seems to show the new storage size. So maybe it isn't working? I am as sure as I can be that I have two partitions, because when I mount the USB storage so I can access it in Windows, the partition size is much smaller (i.e - if I create a 512MB EXT partition through CWM, Windows shows the 2GB capacity as 1.4-ish GB) However, CWM doesn't give me any indication on which type of EXT partition I am creating. As another update, I tried Link2SD instead of INT2EXT this morning. It picked up the fact I have another partition, but it asks me which type it is (EXT2, EXT3, etc) and as I do not know, I may be picking the wrong options. Anyway I think I managed to get apps installed into the EXT partition, but in Android's storage settings, it still shows 150MB internal storage - is this correct? When I see screenshots of others using tools like INT2EXT or Link2SD, their Storage settings seems to show the new storage size. So maybe it isn't working? Link2SD would not show the internal memory as increased, you can see that from the app itself (menu->storage info). You can enable auto-linking in settings. By the way if the app is on sdcard, then its not on the 2nd partition. To move it to the 2nd partition you have to link it. Make sure to link apk,dex and lib. If you have paid version then you can also link data. As for facebook, I have not used it in a while but it may have large amount of dex files that have to be linked. Also the data may be large. And remember to reboot if storage space runs out.
Also which rom are you on?

Thanks to your post two posts earlier, I think I have cracked the storage thing
When it wasn't working previously, like I said, I had been doing the partitioning in CWM.
However, I managed to get the system mounted under Windows so that I could do the partitioning in Mini Partition Wizard as many recommend. Now when I install a ROM and then install Int2Ext4 straight after, the extra storage shows up in settings once the ROM is booted
ROM-wise, I have just been messing around with any I can get my hands on from the development thread, to see if I could get the storage problem sorted first and foremost, as this is the most important part for me (well, for my friend!) However, is there a favourite ROM of yours you'd recommend? I've tried so many over the last 2 days that I'm forgetting which does what! I tried a KK ROM which I thought was very slow, but also I tried an OWL 2013 ROM which was performing very well - but there is no keyboard! And I can't seem to be able to install one. If there's one you could recommend which is quite speedy, that'd be great

CM10.1 (probably owl that you mention) is good. Keyboard is probably with Gapps and you need to install it. Anyway I usually use Touchpal Keyboard which works great. KK is slow but CM10 and CM10.1 are good. For best speed use gingerbread based roms.

Yes I agree, the OWL has been my stable ROM for almost 2 years.. Now I am moving towards the latest CM, the Olivier's one.. Give it a look!

I agree that GB ROMs will be best for speed, but I've tried a few based on JellyBean 4.2.2 and they seem very quick, I am actually shocked (for a phone with such a low processor speed etc, it runs these modern ROMs so much better than my old Sony Xperia X10)
However, one thing I notice is, despite installing GAPPS on any of the JB/KK ROMs, there are certain Google Apps missing, and I can't install them from the market either. For example, Google Search - when I look for it in the market, it says that the app is not compatible with the Android version I am running. However, I know for sure that Google Search runs on any Android version. It let me download the new Google Now Launcher, but I can't run it because it needs Google Search installed, but I can't install it from the market.

Current Google Search has official support for only armv7 devices, but our phone's processor is armv6. You can still download the apk and install but voice recognition will not work.
By olivier's latest he probably meant CM11 that you used earlier but it is slower tham 4.2.2 roms.
Hello guys!
Well, it looks like official TWRP (latest version) doesn't work for me as I use f2fs. I used a bsmitty build that worked like a charm but then updated to a more recent Ziyan build. I've noticed that the phone is giving error codes when I try to flash data or internal storage (so... the data partition) and I want to go back to a TWRP that doesn't have those kinds of problems. Especially because nowadays I try to erase everything apart from internal storage so I check all the boxes exept internal storage but it deletes internal storage too, it's annoying.
Does anyone have a older build or a new build without those problems and with f2fs support? I would appreciate if you share it with me :highfive:
