Modem issue - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

I have the latest community build installed on my oneplus 3. I have jio 4g and airtel sim cards installed (india). There is a lot of signal fluctuations even at places with excellent signals especially on airtel. It has been like this since I bought this device. I do online gaming ,which made me notice all that high ping which then gets normal and then goes high in a rhythmic fashion which makes it unplayable.. Whereas I had one plus one before which worked flawlessly. When I deactivate jio 4g , my airtel works better
Suggestions please

I get signal fluctuations a lot, but only with CM14 roms. OOS and roms based off of it have stable connections for me. Maybe try CM14 and see if the opposite case works better for you.

[Q] Bad Reception Madness

Hi all,
I have bought a couple Motorola Defy [T-Mobile - unlocked] from NegriElectronics and the phone is a great phone. The Big problem that I am having is that the signal strength that this phone is showing is always VERY low as compared to my T-mobile G2 that I also bought from negri and unlocked.
The first defy i left it at stock 2.1 @ 2.34.1
The other defy I flashed 3.4.2-155-2 Motorola SBF with RSD Lite.
The flashed defy show a 4dBm increase to the original but it still crappy
Everything in the phone works, and it is fast. But the Bloody reception drops to one bar and sometimes go into Emergency Call Mode.
I'm in Trinidad in the Caribbean and it is not the sim or the carrier because i placed the sim in my G2 and it gets full bars.
What can I do to improve the reception on my Defy's?????
THANKS
I had same problem. This fixed it.

I hope UNRAFA's solution works for you, but if it doesn't... just because your SIM works in the G2 doesn't necessarily mean it will work in the Defy. Not sure why. When I bought my Defy I had recently upgraded my SIM and it worked for a while -- then went off the rails reception-wise. T-Mo had me upgrade to a uicc SIM and that solved the problem. At least for me.
Actually the Chinese had made a baseband switcher apk which collected nearly 20 baseband settings of various defy roms worldwide. Unfortunately it has no English translation.
Hi All,
It has nothing to do with the sim (I am sure) and the Chinese application i cannot read
Is there any other tweaks that I can do to help the reception?
Seriously, the link i gave you contains all the information, the basebands, BaseBandSwitcher.apk to install and do it with a click, every option is in chinese but it got a number next to it matching the firmware version, and i think its prety much universal numbers and easy to guess, but yet a translation of every option of the program has been posted..
And yes, there are other options to get better 3g editing build.prop but despite good reports from people, that has not been proved to actually increase 3g speed and i wouldn't recommend doing that.
Compared to my Samsung Vibrant 2G reception was very poor out on rural interstates, but perfectly fine in the city and it has much better 3G reception than the Vibrant. I think there was a problem with my original.. I got a new one and I will be testing it out soon.
Ok, I see the baseband thing you were talking about, tried it, but i seem to get an increase of 4dBm on the signal
BTW, there is NO 3G here, just 2.5G/EDGE, hence I dont really care about the Internet speed. I just need a better reception.
I compared this phone to the 3 Nokias in the household and all the nokias were showing 5 bars, while the Defy was at 2
Something is really messed up with this. Is there any way to manually increase the tX and rx power of the radio ????
I'm on Pays 5.0 and still not much difference with the new radio/sbf
Baseband 3g fixes, not only fixes 3g speed, it fixes reception too. Just apply the fix for your country and you are done, theres also ZERO danger for your phone, you can apply patches one over another untill you get the one that best works for you.
An easy test is switch between "2g only , or 3g only" and watch reception bars for voice calls. If you have 3g slow speed or bad reception, you need a patch.
RE: On Chinese baseband switcher apk
Yo folks,
Check out

I guess this translation is better then nothing right.
FYI I already tried it, seems there's some improvement but not that significant, but hey every region has different network quality right?
Ciao
Of course... you could have a bad phone.

calls are disconnected after few minutes

hi all,
stock 551ML no root, the calls running on SIM1 (4G) gets disconnected after 5/10 minutes. i suddenly see the radio bars disappearing, i can't hear anymore the called party, and then the call drops. Tried with 2 different carriers on SIM1. The phone is always enabled with 2 SIM's, but on the second one (whatever the carrier is) there's no such problem. I think this phone has large issues when dealing with 2G/3G/4G swap, signal quality on SIM1 is terrible (tested in comparison with wife's iphone6+ with same carrier same location) and often i lose signal on SIM1. Definitely not a work phone in this way. any idea? can a full reset improve the situation?
Please ensure firmware is updated to latest version. Next please try performing a hardware reset including cache wipe partition. http://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1011956/
If the problem continues then it may be a hardware issue with the SIM slot and will require RMA service.
Sincerely

after few weeks i can say more about this issue, on SIM1 the 4G slot. (stock phone updated and wiped completely)
1) carrier signal reception has now slightly improved with .59 and .63 update
2) problems on switching from 4G to 3G still there, when 4G signal is poor the phone is not able to detect it, and tries and tries and tries sending data to nowhere. after a minute or so, switch to 3G happens and i got network connectivity again
3) comparison with iphone6+, samsungS5 and sonyZ3 (same network, same location) is still terrible, while i got no network, iphone does and loads the pages, slowly but it loads the full page. i think here is the price difference between the two -> antenna, radio, optimized software for any signal condition
4) under bad (bad from a 551ML point of view) signal conditions the battery drains a lot more faster, and that's fine but at least i would like to use the phone, to receive calls, messages, whatsapp and so on.
5) during a call on SIM1, it still happens that signal disappear and i the call is dropped, less frequently than i had before .59 update, but still happens.
6) i'm calling using SIM2 BTW, SIM2 on 2G has no issues.
i will be soon able to compare with honor7 (it should have a very good optimization on the radio part) and let you know.
bye
I am on AT&T in the US and having a similar problem and hoping someone can help except for me it is SIM 2 that is the problem and for me it is at home. Last night I was on a call that kept dropping, and it was not a good thing at all and I had to end the call. I pretty much cannot sustain SIM 2 calls in my house but SIM 2 elsewhere is okay; calls on SIM 1 are perfectly fine and with my previous phones (Note 3, iPhone, Windows Lumia 1520) no reception problem history ever at all. So this clearly is a device issue and not an AT&T issue as I get good coverage in my house. I had two phones up until a month ago when I opted to consolidate by getting the ZF2.SIM1 is perfectly fine most of the time-I've never dropped a call although a couple times I have to say I've not heard as well for a moment as I could, so I question if my house and the Zenfone2 are a good match, although that is really a weird thing as I live in a major suburban metro area that is not a coverage problem in any way shape or form with any dead spot problems, so I am wondering if something is wrong with my hardware and I need to exchange my phone. I'm going to have to pop my SIM 1 back into my Note 3 in the interim and forward calls on my second line in the interim in the meantime if that's the case . (my windows phone takes a nano SIM) and send my ZF2 back for an exchange Should I do a hard reset? Why would my house be a problem? It's not a dead spot area or remote or anything like that. I really like this phone already got a new SIM 2 card once before when I had problems at first but it seemed to be better until I then tried to make a c all yesterday and it wouldn't work.Could my phone be defective? Hard reset?? My software is up to date.

After latest updates and various test i can say that signal coverage and battery life has been improved so much. Thanks a lot asus, it's a pleasure to work with this phone now. Keep doing the same good job!

Glad to hear things worked out for you. My situation didn't work out. I just returned the Zenfone yesterday. I had gotten the replacement phone through ASUS, still replaced yet another SIM card, and the problem with my SIM 2 persisted and got even worse. For me, the SIM slot being 2G did turn out to be the destructive feature of the device. My area is too upgraded for it apparently. You're the only other person I've come across that has referenced SIM 2 usage to me, so I get the sense that most people are just using the ZF2 as a single SIM and don't have a second phone line or data line. Therefore I can understand people being happy overall as it's a decent device for a single SIM user. You are lucky that your SIM 2 coverage is good everywhere. Mine was good in some areas but certainly not in and around my house and there my SIM 2 was unable to sustain phone calls. I didn't care about data-I only wanted phone calls but I couldn't do calls even.I had no cellular connection and my SIM 2 would X out and drop off all the time.
I never had a problem with SIM 1. I always got calls just fine and I found that ASUS always provided updates and I noticed changes in battery life. I was pleased in every other regard but the very purpose that I bought the phone for -to be able to get calls to both my phone lines. I do think ASUS dropped the ball with the 2G slot and need to make their next model with both slots supporting LTE. They me might get me back as a customer if they do.

It looks like I am not the only one who has the sim 2 signal issue. My phone has this issue from day one, the signal of sim 2 just comes and goes all the time. Software update doesn't help at all. I've also tried putting a new sim card, but still have the same problem. I think this is a hardware issue.

Low network connection in AEX5.5. Any suggestions.

Low network connection and only LTE , not LTE+
Hi,
Network fluctuation is present for me in all Custom ROM that I have tried. Only stock ZUI ROM gives the most stable network reception for me.
However, Off late my network, Jio 4G is running very slow. Now it is very much possible its due to the rush of IPL watching. Not sure, I shall wait till IPL season is over before making a judgement. Because, in between, I was with AiCP 13.1 for couple of days, and there too I faced slower connection issue.
Haven't yet faced any issue with call connectivity or quality though.
Thanks.

LTE Singal is Stronger on OOS ROMs

Has anyone noticed their 5T's LTE signal is stronger when using OOS ROMs compared to AOSP ROMs? I've noticed this consistently whether at home, at work, or out and about. It's not like those places have a weak LTE signal either, it's just that OOS ROMs seems to be better from a signal strength, speed, and latency point of view.
Edit: I noticed on AOSP ROMs, AospExtended included, the network mode is usually 3G and not 4G LTE, even though the LTE signal is better than 3G and has lower latency as well as greater speeds. However on OOS based ROMs, it is the other way around, and the LTE signal tends to be stronger as well. I'm using the same firmware and the network towers and carrier is the same, so the only thing that's different is the ROM and kernel. I can force it into LTE mode but then the 3G functions like phone calls and text messages wouldn't work because the network carrier doesn't have voLTE enabled properly yet.
It's because OnePlus cheats the signal strength reported in oos. AOSP based roms do not. AOSP roms tell the truth.

But how do you explain that my apps like Instagram run better on OOS than AOSP? It's like AOSP is reluctant to switch to LTE so I have to force it to switch.

Maybe cheating works

Then it's not cheating if OOS actually has better signal compared to AOSP?
Edited and updated OP
I've noticed signal is better as well but i chalk that up to cheating. As for apps performance, haven't noticed anything different.
One major gripe i have is OOS seems to jump to roaming towers and stay on them a lot more than AOSP. On my walk to work, for whatever reason on OOS, it jumps to USA towers every single time, which are across the ocean about 10km away, cutting off my data connection, and causing my music to stop. On AOSP, it always stayed on the Canadian towers in the same city within a few blocks of where i'm walking. I wish there was a way to manually specify what networks to connect to to prevent this from happening.

Loosing signal/network

Phone looses signal(mostly network) on different areas where there is signal. I read that this could be caused by updates, so I did a fresh install of latest A10 version (it did fix wifi problems), it got better, but still is not acceptable for daily use. Then I installed latest oreo rom, again it got a little bit better, but still not good enough. Afterwards I discovered that if signal has gotten weak setting preferred network type from 4G to 3G or vice versa gets connectivity back instantly. Also for some reason the sim slots are swapped in settings and slot 2 doesn't get signal at all(only saw this when I got oreo, can't say if this was present on A10).
Is this a software or a hardware problem? I got this phone in a pawnshop(had to get a cheap phone ASAP but couldn't afford a new one at the moment) a few days ago and if it has a hardware problem then I still have time to return it, otherwise I would like to fix it and keep it.
Seems like I have found a workaround, I installed latest POSP custom rom and set 4G/3G only in network settings, it still can loose network signal for a few seconds in a low signal area, but a few seconds isn't causing problems. Still have to do some testing but I'm inclined to think that this is a hardware failure, but if my workaround does the job I'm fine with it till I can afford to buy a new phone.
