Copying settings from 6p - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

So I just got my Pixel XL and connected my 6P to copy all my settings and stuff over. However, its been at the same copying screen (calculating remaining time) and length on the bar for a half hour now.
Anyone try this method and get it to work?

Are you still waiting?
I too have the 6P and copying settings, ~6GB of music and 3GB pictures and videos took me around 30 minutes.
And yes, it took a while on the mentioned screen.

I gave up and canceled the transfer. Was able to just transfer from things I saved to my laptop from my 6p. I didn't have the patience to wait any longer after 45 minutes had passed.

I understand, patience is not always a geeks friend.
Glad you got some backups.

I plan on setting up as new device.

[Q] Phone won't turn on (Stock AT&T)

Hi all -
I have an AT&T GS3, completely stock, non-rooted.
This morning, I was scrolling through my launcher, and my thumb accidentally hit Media Hub. It started to load, and then the screen went blank. I just figured it got hung up or something. So I did a battery pull, and restarted the phone. It took a bit longer to restart than usual. Once booted, it then re-booted itself. And then it just died. I can't remember what my battery level was, but it was about 50%.
So while I was doubtful that the battery was dead, I put it on the charger and let it sit for awhile. Nothing.
I've removed the SIM card. I've tried different chargers. The battery feels cool to the touch after being on the charger for awhile... so I'm not sure it's charging. If I plug it in with the battery removed, the red LED comes on. With the battery in, no LED.
I've tried holding the power button in, I've tried to get it to boot in download mode, etc. But I can't get it to do anything.
If I plug it into my computer, it beeps... and lists QHSUSB_DLOAD in the Device Manager.
I tried Googling, but all of the "Sudden Death" type articles/posts are international variants that have the Exynos chip. Haven't seen anything for the US variants.
Any thoughts? Suggestions?
Thank you!
Did you try any alternate battery, like the one from your friend's phone? I feel its a case of "dead" battery.
Unfortunately, none of my friends have a GS3...
I suppose I could make the 45 minute trek to the AT&T store and see if they have a battery I could test out. Not fun, but if it's something as simple as a faulty battery, then it'll be worth it.
Check on Amazon... I think you could get a test one for less than 10 bucks, far less than you might spend elsewhere...

Make a call to the at&t store to make sure they'll look at your phone and can fix or replace it. If so, make the journey. You are stock and not rooted. You have nothing to sweat (warranty-wise).

I ended up doing just that. Turns out, there's a AT&T Repair Center about an hour away, so I went there. The folks there were really nice, and apologized for the inconvenience. They tried a different battery, and a few other tricks they have, but no go.
So, they swapped it out, (with a refurb I'd imagine), and now I have the pleasure of reloading and resetting everything. Argh.
The worst part about it all is that I lost all my game progress, and a lot of my random saved images. My camera images were thankfully synced with Dropbox. I wish Dropbox would sync more than just my camera images... I might have to look into a 3rd party app to do just that.
What I'm kicking myself for is that about a week ago, I downloaded Carbon, which can backup my apps and data on non-rooted devices. But I didn't run the backup yet. D'oh. That will teach me. I miss my Titanium Backup that would automatically back up my apps to Box while I was sleeping. But I need to root for that. I was thinking about it lately, but I really want to try and stay stock/non-root. We'll see now!
Thanks y'all!

Yeah, I know it's cheaper... but sometimes it's worth spending the extra money to have it today. It turned out to not be the battery, but if it had been, I'd much rather pay the extra money to have one today, instead of waiting for a replacement to arrive. Even overnight, since it's Sunday, the soonest I could get one via Amazon would be Tuesday.

I have two tasks in Tibu that run every night - one for new apps and new versions, and one for all apps with changed data... and I make sure I sync all this to TiBu every weekend, or maybe twice a week.
One more thing, set up your TiBu to backup data to external SD. This way even in case of failure, you could always take the card out. Same for camera too... set it up to save images and videos to external SD.

Full encryption causing bootloop at Verizon screen, I think?

So the company I work for requires that you fully encrypt your mobile device if you want to check your company email account via Outlook. I charged my phone up to 92%, began the encryption process, kept the phone plugged into a 2.0 charger and 5 hours later its still stuck on the Verizon boot image. I have about 18gb of music on the internal storage, a literal **** ton of pictures (also on the internal), and another literal **** ton of apps. I have a 128gb micro SD card in there as well but never got around to moving much over to it.
So here's my question: is my rooted G4 bricked or could the process be taking so long because of how much literal **** I have stored throughout the phone?
I'd greatly appreciate any advice, my occupation revolves around our phones so I'm literally F'ed in the Aye if I'm without my phone in the field tomorrow.
Well scratch my plea for help off of your evening To-Do lists. As the 6th hour post-encryption drew near I said screw it and pulled the battery and was eventually greeted with my lock screen and the encryption password so all is well.

Nexus 5x died with no warning

Been using my 5x for 18 months or so, standard Android 7.1, etc. Pulled it out of my pocket a couple hours ago and it is totally dead! Had about 75% battery when last used.
I'm unable to get any response out of it, no charging indicator, power + volume keys doesn't work. Just totally dead.
Any ideas? Will Google replace it for a fee? I'm on a trip for another few days and will really miss it -- hope I don't need it for something important.

Same happened to me while ago. But still no luck with this. To fix I believe I need access to boot menu which I couldn't
Update: For some reason, I was able to get into the initial screen that you get by holding power and volume down. However, none of the three options work from there. All I get is a Google logo for several second and return to darkness.

my nexus 5x is going to die . i opdate it too android 8 and work with telegram . then it turn off and is not turn on . after 1 day when press power key the notification light is turn on. i cant go to recovery or downloaD mod . please help me
Mine did this exact thing and it was the bootloop problem, though it didn't bootloop. It acted like yours did.
Your best hope if you're going on a trip soon, is try the method that turns off the big cores. If you don't have an unlocked bootloader, try putting it in the freezer or an ice bath, and maybe it'll boot long enough to unlock the bootloader. Mine would get into recovery using that method so I could wipe the cache and adb the OTA. It also tried to boot longer, but never would boot.
All the phones act differently and you may get lucky.
Mine never booted until I used a hairdryer on the motherboard. But it immediately froze after booting. Then actually did start bootlooping. Only using a heatgun got it to boot where I could pull my data off of it. But it died relatively quickly. Then I got it to act normal for 9 hours after using a heatgun at higher temp. After that I could heatgun it again and get it to boot, but it would very quickly die again. The fix that turns off the big cores was not out then, so I don't know if it would have fixed it.

I was on a trip when it happened, but miraculously survived without access to Google Maps, SMS, FB, etc. Returning home, I was very impressed with Google support. I put in for a callback on my home phone, received a call in less than a minute, and they are replacing my phone (with a refurb) free as a "warranty extension" (phone about 18 mos. old). So I should be back in business in a couple days. In the meantime, I'm finding it kinda liberating to not have to be carrying the phone around, remembering to put it on the charger, etc.

Yeah, they replaced mine at 14 or 15 months in. By then it was such an issue that the tech guy didn't even bother making me do all the troubleshooting steps before he said he was handing me off to the guy to set up the replacement.
Mine just did this to me. It's my second 5X and this time nearly 6 months elapsed before it died so I couldn't use the Amazon return process (my first one started bootlooping in less than 2 weeks).
Had the phone 100% charged, slipped it into my pocket, took it out during lunch and it refused to boot. Can't even get into recovery.
I'll put it into my freezer tonight to see if I can at least get it to boot long enough for me to retrieve a few photos that I hadn't backed up in the cloud.
I wonder if my frequent use of the phone as a car GPS contributed to this. My friend's 5X has not crapped out on him since he bought it in 2015...
Google Pixel, here I come!
Edit: Freezer worked, and in fact the phone is still alive, but I'm not cancelling my Pixel order regardless

1 hour. It works as usual. Hasn't died since I took it out, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
hey guys - I'm troubleshooting this device for a lady friend - this exact thing just happened to her haha she's running all stock everything, I was able to get to the default bootloader/choose recovery etc screen but when I selected recovery, like you all, it just bootlooped a couple times, then played the entire boot animation, then died again...
if I do this freezer thing, can the wug's toolkit aid me in flashing some custom stuff to make it a little easier to mess around with? i.e. put on kernel adiutor and turn off the big cores like someone mentioned?? anyone know the thread where I could root purely from bootloader screen + computer? the toolkit seems to require normal access to the OS to function, right?
thanks in advance

I believe you should be able to get the phone to stay alive long enough to do everything you mentioned, after a freezer treatment.
In my case, the phone has actually stayed alive continuously after the freezer treatment but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Same things happened to my phone...it was 50% charged and all of sudden... The phone went off...still trying to find out....
Just happened to me.
Phone died while in standby on my desk, black screen and no luck booting or anything. I was assuming the worst, it's been only 1 year since i bought it.
I dig out my screwdrivers kit, removed the back cover and disconnected the battery. After a few minutes i reconnected it and the phone was alive and kickin' again. No bootlop whatsoever.
Now it's working fine, i hope it keep doing that for long time. @machoman1337 yours is still fine or died again?
Thanks

Screen Flash - Happening to you?

I purchased my Pixel 2 XL straight from google and am using it on AT&T. I haven't had any problems at all with this since i got it. Its been about 3 weeks. I did the Nov 5 update last week and just a few minutes ago the screen flashed once while just laying there doing nothing.
I've seen this around the internet where the flash happens when rebooting the phone, but mine was just sitting there on the table with the screen off, and the always on display showing the time and date when it flashed (white). It only flashed once, but, i'm wondering if this has happened to anyone else and if we know what's causing this?
I have the same issue which happened right after the Nov 5 update.
I did a factory reset, boot into safe mode, AOD on and off and the issue still persists.
I'm getting this prob 5-10 times in the past week on my new device that I got from them.

lol I wish... just tried a factory reset on it as I finally just got the recent patch. We will see if it helps it out.
Nice wallpaper!
I saw the article on this on Android Central, which included 2 videos of it. I personally have not seen this screen flash happening on mine.
It's starting to happen more frequently. I had installed substratum and changed a theme, rebooted, and couldn't boot Android so I factory reset the phone and it's been doing it every since, is typically within a minute of shutting the screen off.
I had it happen 2 days into getting mine on the 27th. Google replaced it then because a factory reset didn't fix it. It happened any time I locked the screen and man was it bright when I was in a dark room.
Google Support is sending me a new replacement. Hopefully this one wont have the issue.
Happens on mine too. From what I read, Google is working on a software fix for it.
Replacement phone received (11/14) with a build date of Nov 3. Within 4 days of having the phone a gray band is now appearing at the top portion of the screen and the screen flashes uncontrollably.
Attempted to work with Google Support who in turn had me go through a gauntlet of trouble shooting steps and a factory reset..... I knew none of the steps would work because this is a true hardware issue.
Still no reply from Google Support after I sent them the debug reports, pictures of the gray band that has formed and the video of the screen flashing.

Holy s**t man. This is bad.
I was finally convinced to get the Pixel 2 XL over the Oneplus 5T but then I saw this.. And the fact that this is your REPLACEMENT phone from Nov 3rd is even more worrying. Damn.
Very frustrating... Unfortunately I had to return the Pixel. My 14 day return period ends on 11/21 and I couldn't risk getting a 3rd replacement that could potentially have the same issues.
Its upsetting cause everything else about the phone I love. Back to my LG G5 until i find something new.
Got my 3rd device yesterday, first two were very blue screens this one is much better but it flashes bright white when going into always on display. Not sure if I want to go through all the bull**** again. Google really dropped the ball on the release of this phone, obviously not ready for primetime.

I had something like this happen once so far and was just about to take a screen capture when it resolved. I think it was shifting from the AOD to the main screen after unlocking the device.
It's definitely something to be concerned with if it's happening repeatedly. The more time passes, the more and more questionable Google's decision to use LG becomes...
Google needs to say clear of LG imo.

nexus 5 was great from LG.......

Finally left Windows Phone for Pixel... which let me down a month later.

Keeping this concise. Background:
I've been using Windows Phone devices for 8 years. My original 8yr old Samsung Focus is still kicking.
I figured it was about time to jump to Android and picked up a "used for 3 months" Pixel XL. Originally purchased from the Google Store. (purchaser forwarded his receipt).
Bought first week of November, didn't use for a month as I didn't have a case, then used on WiFi but didn't have a sim in it until December 20th or so.
It had been running great. Now that I think of it, it had shut off twice from ~30% battery but in extreme cold. Thought it was cold related.
Two nights ago I set it down to go to sleep. I woke up, it did not.
At first I thought the screen died. I would get the odd vibration when long-pressing power for example, but never anything on the screen. The power + vol brought up the quickboot/recovery but:
"start" results in a blank screen
""restart bootloader" goes to blank screen
"Recovery mode" flashes a white screen with the Google logo for half a second then blank screen
"Barcodes" displays barcodes
I recently picked up a USB C > USB 3 cable and plugged it into my Win10 PC. It showed "Android Device Ready" but I expected to see some removable drive show up (dunno, had never hooked it up to my PC before to know what the usual behaviour should be).
Today, when trying to start it again it flashed the battery/charge icon for half a second, then blank screen.
I had a chat with a Google support agent who got me to try a remote erase which, I'm guessing, hasn't been received by my phone.
So my Android experience thus far has been: spending more than I've ever spent on a phone for a device that I accessed wifi on for a few weeks, then started to set up as my daily driver for a few weeks, just in time for it to seemingly die. Oh yeah, and of course, it's out of warranty. This world is new to me. Google's suggestion was to send it in to a partner for repairs (who knows how much that will cost). I'm hoping there's something else I can try before resorting to that.
Originally I was hoping to get some data off it. I'm not familiar with what Google backs up within Android (I had those settings checked, but no third party backup apps). I guess my photos should be backed up which would have been the biggest thing. Now I'd just like to recover the device without having to spend more money!
Oh, previous owner had Oreo 8.1 on it.
Any guidance would be most appreciated. Back to my trusty 5+ yr old Lumia 1020 in the interim!

Factory reset.
Sounds like a hardware problem. Most likely a motherboard issue. Try flashing the official 8.0 factory image first though.
