I just received my Pixel XL this morning. I have been playing with it all day and so far it is wonderful. I am going through the settings and I've encountered an option to toggle on data roaming. When I toggle it on I get a pop-up that says something along the lines of potentially incurring extra cost.
I know Fi service piggybacks off of Sprint, T-Mobile, and I believe US Cellular. They charge basically by the Gigabyte for data. $10 per Gig. Do I need to turn on data roaming in order to connect to certain data towers while I'm out in rural areas, or does it make no difference?
Not sure why it isn't enabled by default, but there is no reason not to turn on data roaming. No extra charges as Google said they fully cover it.

I am currently in northern Michigan, and my phone switched to roam on AT&T. I use data services through the Tzones plan, using epc.tmobile.com. A couple of questions:
1. Will the AT&T towers connect me to my specified apn: epc.tmobile.com? Will there be any port restrictions?
2. Will there be any additional charges for use of the data plan while roaming?
Thanks!
I'm kinda confused about how... well.... the whole thing.
OK, sorry, let me try to simplify:
I am a T-Mobile customer. I use data services on my S620 via the Tzones data plan. I manually set my apn to epc.tmobile.com.
Now I am currently in a roaming area (no tmobile towers around), but my phone is switched over to AT&T (i.e. roaming).
I believe that there will be no fees for using the phone services, i.e. voice, but i am less sure about the data costs. Has anyone tried to use data services while roaming? Did it result in an extra cost on your bill?
Im on flex pay, and at this moment im roaming on ATT, it dosent cost me any extra to make calls or use data since its already payed for. I dont know about contracts because sometimes they can add on extra charges before the bill is due.
If you're under T-Mobile, I'm pretty sure you won't be charged unless you're roaming internationally.
At least that's what they said when I got my iPhone on TMo
So Im thinking about selling my GS2 and getting the Nitro. Can I still keep my Same unlimated data plan when switching to LTE?
I was able to keep my unlimited data plan on ATT when I switched to LTE.
I was also able to keep it - the problem is that it is now much easier to be in the top 5% since the download speeds are so much better.
Same here. No problem with switching to LTE. Send *DATA# (*3282#) to check the data plan through text msg when you are still in the store.

You should be alright as long as you don't need LTE speeds, you'll probably need add new APN to get non-LTE internet.
A bit off-topic but here is my little story going back and forth my old unlimited to LTE plans:
I had unlimited plan for 4 years. A month ago I got Skyrocket and in store they had to change my plan to unlimited LTE (same price, same everything, the only difference is at the usage page at att.com it shows I used nn out of 10238976MB (that's 10TB!!!) instead of unlimited.
So, later I returned Skyrocket and went back to my old unlimited plan and bought used Nitro, which initially didn't work because it required LTE plan even though I'm not in LTE area. But after adding new APN, by using data from Atrix4G I managed make it work and everything seemed to be peachy. But littler later I realized I don't have voice mail, I get busy signal when dial in and other people gets message that the phone is not in service. Called ATT and they told me that voicemail is disabled for my account. According to the tech support the LTE phones have this "visual voicemail" feature which is not available in any other plans. So switching back to old plan would disable visual voicemail and will not automatically re-enable normal voicemail.
They refused activate normal voicemail without switching me to LTE plan, which is (IMO) a total BS.
Hi guys,
I use Sprint's unlimited network with a HTC EVO 4G along with Cyanogenmod. I used it to tether quite a bit...
Supposedly Sprint sent me a letter for "excessive roaming". I never really saw it, and I only tethered with 4G.
Sprint terminated my phone and left the two other phones in the contract. My plan is to basically transfer one phone in that contract to another and get mine back in (since the contract is under a 2 phone probation for 6-9 months).
I don't plan on screwing that up again.. so my questions are:
1.) How do I know if my data is roaming or not?
2.) Does not updating your radio regularly affect data roaming?
3.) I heard (from another forum) that torrenting can affect data roaming usage. I admit I've torrented a gigantic 3+gb free to play MMORPG through tethering before. What does torrenting do to affect data roaming (the technical details of it)?
4.) I enjoy using tethering as I travel (in the city where there's Sprint coverage) quite a bit. What are some pointers I could get to stay under the radar next time?
Thanks for the help everyone. I really appreciate it.

Not sure if that will work. They probably blocked your phone's esn, and they normally completely cancel your number, so you can't get that number back with sprint.

If you are on a Sense rom, there will be a triangle above the signal bars. Not sure if this happens on an ASOP rom or not. However, if you are using one of the Verizon prl's, you will get NO notification that you are roaming.

There really has only been 2 or 3 radio updates in the life of the evo, so there is no need to keep updating it. If you are not on the current radio, it can't hurt to update it.

Umm, well ANY tethering uses data, torrenting is no different, other than the fact that you are constantly using data, and obviously downloading large torrent files will use more data that downloading a 5kb email.

Well since sprint has unlimited data, if you are tethering on sprint's network you are fine, no matter how much data you use. It's the roaming data that will get you noticed and cancelled.

Which did they send you? A letter for excessive roaming, excessive data usage or excessive data roaming? The only reason I as is because the OP is vague when it comes to excessive roaming and there are 3 different cases of excessive roaming.
Each are different and need to be handled differently. I would call them up and ask which was the case.
Sprint will send 2 letters and place several calls to you when you are in violation of this TOS.
I got an excessive voice roaming letter while living in an roaming area for 3 months. But when I received the letter I had already moved back.

Excessive data roaming, according to one of Sprint's supervisors.
The supervisor claimed that my NUMBER will be cancelled, but I will be able to enable a new number. All I'll really have to do is get Google Voice and catch my old number to reroute calls to my new number (according to that supervisor)
It's strange because I'm not sure if I'm roaming or not (in data) with Cynaogen 7.
Needless to say, I've set my data to Sprint only instead of "Automatic".
They quite frankly mercilessly cut off my line, set the plan from a max of 3 lines to 2 for 6-9 months, gave me refusal to restore my old number after I negotiated that the letter was never seen.
They looked up something on my account and knew that I used a torrent software at one point. The supervisor used that and went off on a different tangent stating that downloading illegal software is a federal offense and reason enough to cut me off... I briefly corrected him saying that I specifically downloaded a 3-4 GB file that was a free to play game.
Anyways.. I hope this helps anyone who is currently tethering their EVO or any sprint device. Hopefully no one else will make the same mistake/s I did; they were absolutely ruthless even after 4+ hours of negotiations.
I got my Sprint GS3 a few days ago, and noticed even before I rooted and flashed FreeGS3 that my phone occasionally warns me that I'm roaming (and displays a small triangle by its signal bars) when I'm in certain parts of my house that have bad cell service. Is this some kind of bug or am I going to be charged for roaming?? If it's the latter can someone confirm exactly which boxes to check under Roaming to simply deny me cell service rather than have me get charged extra for accessing a separate network?
Thanks!
EDIT: I guess if I change "Roaming network" to "Sprint only" it won't let the phone roam. The follow-up question is still then whether or not domestic roaming costs anything and if not whether or not there's a reason to keep it off.
Domestic roaming is included in your plan. They will not charge you for any data or voice you use during roaming. However, if you use excessive roaming data or minutes, sprint will boot you off their network. By the way, when you roam, you're connected to Verizon's network.

As mentioned, you can roam at no extra cost... but the "roaming alert" does get really obnoxious. I have several dead zones inside my house and I hate when the notification pops up, particularly if I'm on wi-fi and not even doing anything on the phone that would use the cellular network.

Ah alright. I was messing with the Roaming settings to try and get the roaming alert thing to stop bothering me but I couldn't figure it out. I had domestic roaming guard off, network set to automatic, and the domestic roaming boxes checked for voice and data. Anything else I should be doing?

Bug the hell out of sprint... Why should any of us be "roaming" So much to begin with. Seriously, I would (and I personally have done this) call them and complain about how much roaming you "do"... That way you are on record whenever their roaming dept. calls you to bust your chops about roaming data usage. Just my 2 cents...

If I purchase an unlocked Note 8 and use it on Verizon, is Verizon able to limit my hotspot after 15 GB? I am on their new unlimited plan. Or does the unlocked phones native hotspot avoid reporting the amount of Hotspot usage to Verizon.

Locked or unlocked there is no data caps internal to the device. Limiting is done by the provider by terms of service and contract. Things can change between sign up and whenever. The only limits that can happen without hitting the data cap are from pay as you go service balance, and breach of contract. Some plans rate data per day or peak hours. Not sure with Verizon.
Check with Verizon on your data usage online. Verify what you have used over what Android reports in settings connections / data usage. If it adds up between the two, then your good.
You should be asking on Verizon's forum about their plans and features.
