Buying the 10.5 ..which exact version you recommend? - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I am buying this to replace my note 10.1 2014.
Just wondering which version is the most recommended.
I have a local selling the 16gb with keyboard WiFi only for $200 obo and another is selling the 32GB 4G version for $280 no keyboard.
I am more concerned about which version is recommended here than the differences in internal space and connectivity since I plan to use it with WiFi only and the extra internal space is not crucial for my needs. So if the cheaper option is as good when it comes to smoothness then great but j believe they use different processors .
Thanks!!!

I would go with 4g since it has snapdragon and it's faster then exynos. Also it has better storage which Is essential because it can affect your tablet speed thus reducing it's performance. Also if you plan to install custom os. Make sure it's either t800 or t805. Since there is only one or two old romfor t807. I have only seen lolkpop. I am already rocking kitkat rooted with all the tweaks and blostware deleted.

Well he just told me the version is SM-T807T. So not so good I guess. Also, I cant seem to find that specific model listed as having 32GB but maybe I am missing it.

[Q] Custom Rom Prospects

I recently got a s4 mini with a galaxy gear due to a Rogers promotion. But i'm starting to have serious buyer's regret
From what i understand the only official Cyanogenmod version for the device is for the 3G version but not the LTE version, is that true?
Will there be continued custom rom support or am i better off getting a Moto X or S3?
I really dislike touchwiz, and the phone has crashed on me several times while I was draining its battery as a music player with my sd card, but i must have an SD card slot and only Samsung offers them with any sort of decent specs

I say this without any rudeness, but there's nothing accurate about what you just said:
The roms are compatible with most versions of the phone.
We have one of the best devs working on the device.
You don't need to fully drain and recharge the lithium ion batteries in modern phones like old electronics. In fact, you shouldn't. It will ruin its lifespan.
Enjoy your awesome phone. The MotoX is nice, but the size is not worth the tradeoff.
CM for LTE.

It should be easy for you to see at this point that the custom rom support for this phone will never be as diverse as the flagship ones. This always happens with the minis or secondary versions. You're probably better off selling your mini now and buying the s4 if all the custom bells and whistles are absolutely necessary to you.

I want to buy a Tab Pro 8.4 to replace my Note 8.0 and keep reading conflicting information. My question is simple.. can the 8.4 make and receive calls?

There is an LTE, it's the SM-T325. And acording to official pictures it clearly has an earpiece loudspeaker at the Top. However, in some articles I keep reading does not make GSM calls while on others, yes. The LTE is SnapDragon 800, not Samsung Exynos.. so I am assuming should absolutely make calls. Here is picture..

I have the 4G/LTE SM-T325 and I can confirm that it makes voice calls. I previously owned the Galaxy Note 8.0 GT-N5100, which also made voice calls. I just swapped the SIM card and everything was good to go. I live in the US and I am on AT&T's GSM network.
Now if someone will just create some ROMs for it....

Ohhhhhhh cool, thanks for the confirmation. Like you I also have the Galaxy Note 8.0 GT-N5100.
Keep in mind that the new 8.4 was recently released. ROMs will be available later as more users have it. But now that it can be rooted I can buy one.. I think there is also a working recovery for it.. right?.. these are the 2 most important tools. With these you can delete all the garbage and bloatware you want and modify system and framework apks (.. if U know how to do it). Later, there will be ROMs for it.. give it a little time
Just to confirm with you, the 8.4 is leaps better and faster then the 8.0, right?

Qualitatively it seems faster, but I think a more optimized ROM/kernel will provide even more improvement over the GT-N5100. I was using the X-Note ROM on my GT-N5100, and I was very happy with the speed. The SM-T325 seems a little faster, but not by leaps and bounds. I am currently using Smart Launcher on the device. The biggest improvement is in the display, and it seems like I am getting better battery life than I did with the GT-N5100 after a few charging cycles. Attached is a screenshot of my battery usage from today. I spent a lot of time on Reddit!
Edit: I rooted the tablet using Chainfire's method, and my apps are able to write to the SD card using SDFix. I had no problem rooting the device, but I couldn't get the TWRP 2.7 recovery to install properly. I don't know if there is a problem with TWRP compatibility on the SM-T325 vs. the SM-T320, but for some reason I couldn't get it to work. I didn't try ClockworkMod. Since there aren't really any custom mods/ROMs I can install right now, I just reflashed the stock recovery and decided to wait.

Thanks for the feedback. You are right, the speed improvements from device to device are in fact minimal.. it's all about the software. And 4 cores is useless.. not to mention 8 or 16 cores and I hear some Chinese phones will feature to be released soon.. these people are all out of their minds.. 2 cores running faster will give you a much faster UI experience than 4 cores or more running slower, even if the official benchmarks say otherwise. User experience and benchmarks (most of which the manufacturers fake) are different things. Samsung software and launchers are deplorable.. an aftermarket launcher and a good cleanup of all the useless system garbage will make the hardware run twice as fast and the battery last substantially longer.. my opinion is Android OS becomes bigger, fatter, slower and more complex and less "open source" with each release and the hardware can't keep up with the baggage. KitKat is bigger than Windows XP ever was and some of the apps also bigger and use more RAM than Windows apps. On a phone?? Do I find this normal? No. For me, my Galaxy Tab 7 (the original, and I still have it) running 2.3 Gingerbread, was the Golden age of Android.. from Honeycomb forward is all downhill..
The fact that my phone's CPU has more cores than my laptop, needs more RAM than my laptop and uses an OS bigger than my laptop, tells me clearly we are going the wrong way with this. I am already over Android as I have been with Windows for years. It's time something new comes up again from scratch.. simple, lean, free, open and fast.

[Q] Should i swap my order to 4g version?

I have the SM-T800 on order at my local store... got it pretty cheap. I'll be using it at home so wifi only really. But i cant stop thinking about paying an extra $130 for the 4g model even though i don't really have the money to spend this time of year. I actually got the last black, not bronze version to match my S5 so i was quite happy.
But then again, I'm wondering what ROMS will be out.. I'm guessing more for the wifi version only? and if i ever needed to take it out (doubt it) as i have my galaxy S5 i can always tether to it.
Help my brain stop going over and over this before they run out of stock lol.
Thanks guys
We do have roms, recoveries, kernels. Cm11 and Beta cm12 lollipop. Well Im not sure what chipset you have but we only have exynos roms. When you get the tablet can you check if you have exynos or snapdragon chip bjt downloading an app called cpuz. Or did it say exynos on the order/specsheet. We have more SMT800 roms then the Lte tab s lol.
If you don't have the money, obviously go for the one you can afford comfortably. Technology moves quickly, you'll get your chance to buy top-of-the-line later.
I went for the newest LTE version with the updated processor (T807T). It's amazing but not sure if its worth the extra money.
I got the exynos chipset. I got the black, not bronze version to match my S5 was last in stock they had only just got them in guy said there later models then the bronze/white they had in stock not sure whats different so kept the SM-T800. Quite impressed for the price i scored it for, and couldnt justify getting the 4g version when its home use only

[Q] Worth the upgrade from a Desire 601 on Virgin Mobile?

I've had the Desire 601 for a little over a year now, and while it's the best Android phone I've had yet, it has it's issues. The biggest problem is the meager internal 8GB storage, which only amounts to around 4GB available with the OS and extra apps pre-loaded. As someone who likes to game on Android, being unable to move many of the larger games to the SD card means that I can only have one "big" game installed. And given that the 601 is stuck on Kitkat, this cripples the external storage as well.
I also had some major slow-down issues with my 601, but when I wiped and upgraded from JB to KK, those have gone away.
So would the 816 be a decent upgrade, or should I wait for something else to come along to Virgin Mobile?
The 5.5' screen size is probably the biggest draw for me. The fact that it has Lollipop is a nice bonus too. But the other upgrades seem sort of weak. The CPU is an upgrade from a 1.4 dual core to a 1.6 quad core, but the GPU is apparently the same Adreno 305, which isn't exactly a powerful chip these days. So I can imagine that Android itself and most apps might be snappier, but games would run just as well on the 601 as they would the 816. Is this true?
Enough of my blabbering... my question is to those who have upgraded from the 601 to the 816, do you think it has been worth it? Or am I better off holding for VM to get some new phones? And to the folks who didn't upgrade from a 601 but have an 816, are you happy overall with the phone?
Thanks!

In my opinion, I would get off Virgin when you get the chance. The 816 is pretty good, and the Rom community is pretty developed, but this phone also has 8gb of storage, which is light. Virgin now only sells sub 100$ phones except the s5. They got rid of the 816 off their website, but it's still cheap on Amazon. I would say get a cheap plan off t mobile with an m8 or an s5 (they are reasonably priced now that the next generation has come out)
Good luck!

Yeah, I'm starting to look at trying T-mobile since they have much better selection/options as far as phones.
The m8 and s5 are still a bit out of my price range, especially the s5 which seems to have an "iPhone-like" resale value. Are there any sub-$300 phones that would be highly recommended for T-mobile?
Thanks!

I would recommend buying an lg g2 or maybe a an lg g3 (although its a bit over your price range). Also, if you can get your hold on one, a oneplus one is an amazing choice. The best option in my opinion is to wait till the new generation of moto g comes out soon. Whenever possible, buy off amazon and just buy the sim card from t-mobile for the best prices. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions. The LG G2 looks promising, but the lack of an SD slot is a big negative for me. I might bump out of my price range for the G3, or try and find one used eventually.
Is the Oneplus One hard to get? It does look quite nice.

Need some advice about possibly getting one of these

Heya everyone, been browsing the forums some and tried to figure these things out, but wasn't really sure, so figured I'd ask here.
So for a couple months now I've been on the lookout for a new tablet for when I can afford one. my most recent upgrade was from a Toshiba thrive to a Asus tf700T...........bit of a big mistake cause I didn't realize it only had a gig of ram XP
came across the listing for the Galaxy tab S and from what I can tell, the wifi version would be perfect. enough ram to do decently, doesn't have to be too powerful for games, LOVE the screen (have an AMOLED on my phone and it's great). but my concern arises with being sure about what version is which. How do you tell the difference between the different model numbers? I'm looking into the 32 gig version (which i know is best buy only in the us but...necessary evil), but some threads say only the T800 version can be rooted and flashed? I have no interest in Knox, and the first thing I'm going to do with it is root, and flash a (non-CM) rom to it........had some bad experiences with puzzles and dragons before on one of their roms XP........but anyway.
So yeah. What's the difference in the model numbers, would the 32 gig wifi version fit the criteria for being easily rooted and flash-capable, and I won't bother asking about a good rom, that stuff I can look up myself ^^

Well.. T700= 8.4 inch Tab S WiFi model
T705= 8.4 inch Tab S with the 3g capabilities (aka LTE model)
T800= 10.5 inch Tab S WiFi only model
T805= 10.5 inch Tab S with 3g (aka LTE)
So basically, Models ending with a 5 is an 3g model meanwhile the rest is WiFi only.
And.. Good luck finding 32gb models! They have the same model numbers and ROMs work fine on them regardless of the ROM is 16 or 32gb. 32gb are really hard to find as I haven't seen much people have them! When buying, be extra sure it saids 32gb of storage since the model numbers are the same for the variants. Anyway for ROMs and such, I prefer liquid smooth (seems a perfect combo for me).
To sum it all up, T800 Tab S with 32gb may take some time finding as I don't see many with it. Also, No matter how much storage, they share the same model number for the variant. Also, flashing rooting etc etc works fine on 32gb models from what I heard. I would suggest backing up your .pit in case of anything. And don't let the 3gb of ram thing fool you! Touchwiz is pretty terrible on the Tab S. I am running liquid smooth and its running amazing on my T800 16gb. Well, if you have anymore questions, let me know!

Thanks so much for the quick and useful response! that pretty much summed up everything =D and yeah, I've already heard the horrors of touchwiz long before I was considering this device. As long as it's not something that's like, hardcoded (which.....i'll admit i've never heard of...), as long as I can throw a cleaner rom on there, that's all I need ^^
and yeah, I did some initial research about availability and the difficulty of getting 32gig versions is a bit frustrating, but hopefully that'll turn out to be the easier part. anyway, thank again for all the info! ^^
