Hi,
I had a Wildfire S a few months ago, which I had owned for about 4 months (The Wildfire S was terrible) so I decided to root it.
To say I was happy after I had rooted was an understatement, I flashed CM7 onto the device, which extremely improved the phone.
The problem was, as soon as I flashed it, i started developing problems (not rom caused) such as a constant noise when in calls etc.
Now, my question is I own a HOX, which is an absolute epic phone to say the least.
I really want to use Vipers ROM / PerfectAndroid etc, but am so worried about rooting the HOX.
Is it worth rooting the HOX? What can go wrong and what can I expect to happen if I develop issues? (LIKE LAST TIME )
Thanks in advanced.

All of the ROMS for the HOX are really good, if you're worried might I suggest ARHD as it's the closest ROM to stock there is, aside from Maximus ROM.
If you follow my guide (in my sig) then the rooting will be okay
It's really not that hard

Thanks for your reply mate, I know rooting isnt a huge process in itself. Its just knowing that if (when?) something goes wrong with my phone, im totally screwed for the warranty.
Which may cause me not able to get replacement/fixed under warranty?

unlocking your boot loader will void you warranty, but if you have a fault less hox like i got then go for it
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda app-developers app
Is it worth it? Always personal ofcourse. Do you want to make backups? Lots of customizations? Just root to delete some system-apps or to install an add-blocker? Get the bloody fast Jelly Bean?
In my opinion: GO FOR IT
I don't know how old your One X is, but perhaps it's wise to wait a couple of weeks to see you have any faults.
Wait one or two weeks to see if it has any faults.
If it's faultfree then go root it
I tested mine 12 days before unlocking the bootloader.

It's not actually true that it'll void your warranty. Well not completely anyway, more often than not HTC will honor the warranty if it's a hardware issue, if it's software and it's messed up because you fscked up your HOX then it's on your own head... but it's incredibly hard to do so, it's pretty hard to completely brick a phone if you read and follow the guides and if you manage to brick it then you shouldn't even be holding it!
At least that's the general consensus nowadays...

My HOX is about 2 months old now, and seen no issues what so ever. I want to be able to customise it to be honest, thats about it. It runs smooth and fast as it is, but I get bored of things so easy and the Sense UI etc is boring me to death now .
And thats another thing putting me off rooting mate, JellyBean is (Should be) just around the corner? So don't know whether to wait, or Root

Ah I see, do you know of any cases where the hardware has gone wrong, and HTC have still honored the warranty even though they were rooted?
Was reading a thread of someone having a convo with HTC, and they adimantly stated that if the bootloader is unlocked you are not covered by warranty, and my understanding is that the bootloader HAS TO BE LOCKED to be rooted?
Thanks all !
It is worth doing it, yes.
I waited tree months staying on stock, but rooted, then i decided to install ARHD 2.3.2. Stock was already very good but a custom rom gives the HOX the rest to be the best phone on market. Battery life increases, the handling is even more fluid and laggless as before.
What can going wrong? Well, the most common failure is to forget flashing boot.img as a separate step, because this is unusual against the procedure done with desire or others.
Also restoring a nandroid backup also requires to flash boot of the backup separately. If you keep the boot images at your PC and the ROM Zips on your device, you are well prepared to do this.
Hi mate,
Yes I will make sure to back EVERYTHING up. I have a couple more questions.
I have seen people saying flash RUU, Flash Kernal, etc.
I don't know what the RUU is and im not very informed about Kernals, I know the ROM is the OS, the Kernal is the Driver? I think (NOT A CLUE ABOUT RUU)
And I have heard of battery life getting drained much quicker etc after root? Or people developing signal problems etc.
Finally, if I do root, and decide I don't like it, can I revert to stock and retain warranty?
Again thanks for all the help so far guys !
had 3 phones...last one had a big gap on the left hand side and had issues with power button. had phone unlocked and rooted...left the phone unlocked but flashed back the stock rom that came with the phone...send it to the repair center and the phone came back brand spanking new and still unlocked and everything was covered by the warranty. as long as you do not fry the motherboard due to overclocking and you are careful what you flash and take time to read and search of what you want to do i say you are good to go mate...and like i said few minutes ago to someone else..if you want to customize and love playing with different themes then Viper is your rom...if you want a clean cut rom but still with the tweaks from Viper then ARHD or Renovate are the great roms and far more faster if you ask me...
plus do not forget there is MIUI based on sense framework which for me is awesome and has so many themes and lockscreens to play with and also JB roms to

Bah everyone is telling me to Root it, like I said yeah I wan't customisation with themes etc, which Viper has really drawn me into, but on the other hand I want a clean and bugless rom, that just WORKS GREAT.
Thanks for your example of warranty, thats sorted my head out a bit.
Will probably take the plunge within the next few days, and give it a go.
Just building my confidence up to do it !!
THANKS SO MUCH EVERYONE !

All the roms are great . Just pick what suits your needs. And good luck with the flashing!
And if you want bugless, stay away from the Jelly Bean roms. Fast as hell and buttersmooth but not completely bugfree. I'm waiting for the official HTC Jelly Bean-update, i hope the AOSP-rom-developers can bring us some magic than.

Don't suppose you know what happens when / if they release the official JB Rom,
Can you go back to stock roms, cuz I think when JB is released, I would want to go back to stock.
I've heard rumors in september. I repeat rumors!!!! Could also be december, you never know with HTC
And it's always possible to go back to stock. Only important thing is that you have a nandroid backup of your stock rom without root.
- unlock bootloader
- flash cwm
- do a nandroid backup!!!! and place a copy on your PC
to go back to stock after flashing custom rom:
- extract boot.img from your stock rom nandroid backup on your PC and flash it via fastboot.
- wipe data/cache, factory reset in cwm
- restore stock rom nandroid backup in cwm
- flash corresponding recovery from your stock rom via fastboot
After that you can OTA-update your One X and you're ready to enjoy some wonderful jelly beans
Happy flashing!

I know exactly what you mean. It took me a year before i rooted my desire. You root when you are ready for it.
Here's i.m.o. the best guide for rooting your One X: http://onexroot.com/one-x-root/how-to-root-one-x/
Step 18: go to your location where you put the onexroot-folder
Step 39: Download cwm 5.8.4.0 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1594819 and place it in the onexroot-folder and flash it with fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.4.0-endeavoru.img
After flashing cwm, make a nandroid backup from your stock rom. Then you continue with step 40.
If you're ready with the guide and it's not ok, you missed something. This almost can't go wrong.
Goodluck :good:

See, this morning I was all up for it.
I was like "Yeah, what can go wrong, the ROM's look brilliant, you've rooted and flashed a phone before and it was better after flash".
Now I'm like "No DONT DO IT, if something goes wrong then you'll have to pay for repairs, when you've already spent 500£ on the phone".
BAH why does Vipers ROM exist, I would be able to stay away from rooting without that ROM, I just love the red/blue themes where its all black etc.
hi I'm pretty new to the android os and I'm thinking about jailbreaking my HTC one x (tegra) to get jellybean, which im sick of waiting for and to get better performance. the thing is, iv read/watched a lot of guides on how to jailbreak/flash the one x and there is some confusing points and points in which the guides contradicts themselves. so just a few questions:
can you revert back to factory settings at any point? iv read in some guides that its impossible, I can't see why though?
what exactly is a ruu? is it the equivalent to a bios? is hboot a ruu?
I know that it is possible to brick your phone if you delete the ruu (hence why you use clockworkmod) but it seems stupid that the phone won't even know how to charge itself, is it that easy to brick?
iv heard that you can update the kernal, what's the advantage of doing this?
any tips on what to do and avoid when doing this, we all have to start somewhere
iv been using this as a main reference for the Rom I'm wanting to use.

a RUU is a leaked official version of an update, it is like a custom rom but it is stock and from HTC... when you buy an HTC phone it has certain RUU installed on it.
jailbreak is for iphones (which everyone here should hate), use the word "root" and "S-OFF" and "unlocked bootloader" when you are using an android phone
you can revert back to stock only if the RUU that you're on it has already been leaked.
the HOX is very very hard to brick! but sometimes i see cases of soft-brick which is easy to solve by the way.
our phone unfortunately doesn't have S-OFF (like almost every HTC phone out there except for the ONE X) so every time you flash a rom you have to flash the corresponding boot.img which contains important file to let your phone run with a certain custom rom.

Thanks for the swift reply, sorry I called it that, I had a iPhone for years but I ended up hating it(just it as a mp3 player now lol).
Well I currently havent done anything to my one x so its stock, but what I'm saying/asking is, surely I can just load a stock Rom and bootloader and be back to square one?
And as for the rom/boot.IMG I can see why it is a bit more complicated. So what's, in your opinion, the biggest reason to/you've flashed from stock?
Thanks again!
There is no way for 100% back to stock (for now). Unlocking bootloader voids your warranty.
Why unlock and flash cutom rom? - Custom roms are far better than stock, better performance, longer battery life... no limit of customizing your phone.
The downside for me is only loosing warranty.

because every phone i buy (android of course) will get rooted! custom roms are awesome, and nerdy
So once you unlock your bootloader and put a new Rom on you loose your warrenty because you can't revert and hide the fact that's what you did?
Hmm I don't know if I should mess with this then, I would but iv not long got my phone back from warranty because of the hardware WiFi issue.
Can anyone really sell to me why I should flash? I mean I'm interested in doing it.

yes, you can't hide, once you have unlocked, that you have voided your warranty... you won't ever have something as stable and fast as custom roms, that's why you should root and unlock your phone
right so better proformace and better battery, is there anything else you root for? i mean what does everyone else root for, for that matter?? i mean i keep looking at my phone and thinking. Hmmm should i, shouldent i? lol
Hello everyone, I am very new to all of this so please have patience with my noobness. I have heard of people rooting their devices, and flashing custom ROMs and what not. I really like the look of cyanogenmod, and the functionality it would bring to my locked up AT&T HTC One M8. I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708628 thread that seems like a pretty promising and easy method to achieve root, S-off, and an unlocked boot loader. I almost went through with it today, but I really wanted to be more prepared. I am most scared about bricking my phone while it is still on contract and being stuck without a phone until march when my contract expires.
Basically what I want to know is is it possible to brick your device just by chance? Say I followed a trusted guide, did everything down to the dot, is there still a chance that my device could get bricked just by chance?
Also what are things that I should avoid to prevent getting bricked? Any veteran tips for a newbie? Anyway, thank you for your patience and help!

I would spend more time searching and understanding the phone first...Yes you can have a $600 bricked phone. Rooting is not hard, but there are always risks. Educate yourself thoroughly first, then make a decision.
Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium HD app
I agree with GalaxyNotes, though it is rare to brick your phone just from rooting, its possible. You are more likely to brick it trying to flash an incompatible rom or kernal. Also there is ALMOST always a way to repair your phone should you hard/soft brick it. Spend a little more time researching and if you have questions a long the way there are people here who will help you out.
That first root/unlock/flash is always to most agonizing. Like everyone said take your time. If you don't understand something just a little bit, ask. Also the best thing to do is get your system unlocked and custom recovery installed so you can get your current image backed up. That way you have a known good working copy of your current system and pretty much makes you brick-proof. I've downloaded and have all necessary files etc. to root my device but I'm waiting on my warranty period to end. I just don't want to deal with customer service if something happens to my phone and I'm unlocked. I've seen people have no problems and others all kinds of problems trying to get service after unlocking.
Good luck.
I would recommend not going to CM. Not that CM isn't great, it's just not that great on our phones. The general concensus is Sense > GPE > CM/AOSP. Of course it's not like this for all devices... It's just that HTC does a VERY good job with Sense. You just can't beat it's features and stability. I've gone the route of switching to AOSP and GPE, but always ended up going back because it just felt like it was lacking something. To each their own of course, but I just wanted to share my 2¢.
Hey guy, sorry if this is going to be a bit of a noob question but please try and bear with me. In lieu of the recent nexus 5x which i found to be a huge disappointment I decided to pick myself up an lg g4. I'm not the biggest fan of the stock lg Rom and immediately looked for Cyanaogenmod.
I know that no stable build has yet been release for this phone yet and that i just need to have some patience, but I have some questions regardless. I'm wondering if there is a difference between root and an install of cyanogenmod. By this i mean that there are certain installer which will complete the process for you without you having to do any rooting yourself. If i understand correctly the phone is still being rooted but just by a program. My question is, is it only this latter feature that is not yet available for my phone. Like, if I were to root it myself would I then be able to install a cyanogenmod ROM. Or is it that there is not yet any compatible ROM for my device. If it is of any help I have the LG-H812 version of the phone.
Also, I recently saw a video on the XDA developers YouTube channel where it was discussed how TWRP is now available for the G4. what exactly does this mean and is it something that I would want.
Thank you very much for putting up with me.
Sounds like you need to do a bit more research before you do anything. I don't think TWRP is available for your model at the moment, which rules out custom roms/cyanogenmod. You just have to be patient and hope TWRP becomes available, then wait for a stable rom to come along. Or trade/sell your H812 for the international H815 (careful there are a few variants of the H815).

He's right man you Really should start hammering google especially with a more technically involved root with our g4s. No matter what anyone tells you TWRP or another custom recovery is the number one absolute most important thing to do with any root and immediately after you root before you make any modifications beyond normal app installs whatsoever. Custom recovery is what is going to save your ass in a bootloop or brick situation where you cannot get to the OS or even get a response from the device. As long as you have a backup in storage, you can use hardware key combos to enter TWRP and wipe the system and the problem and reflash the backup. Recovery is completely separate from the Rom that's how you can get around a total Rom disaster when nothing else works. The main reason there's no Roms for them yet is cuz only that one variant's bootloader can be unlocked which is required in most devices to flash a Rom or recovery and the reason that even with my capabilities I won't even bother rooting my expensive ass main important phone I'm still paying for every month lol I just fulfill my flash addiction on an l70 on a daily basis and daily I get outta bootloop and bricks thanks to TWRP... The g3 is perfect for playing with and I'm considering buying a used one and o I recommend the same until the g4 is fully cracked......also CM only comes pretty rooted because it does the same thing as normal just by flashing supersu which is a breeze with TWRP also
Through my ancient eyes comes the certainty of decay... LG G4 & L 70
Just ordered my HTC 10, excited...and nervous as I've not had a new device (like long term) in... like over 1.5 years. :S I'm mainly hoping the microSD card slot likes my 128GB U1 x633 card so I can finally have enough space for all my vinyl rips, and then I hope the DAC is as good as they say.
So anyway, I've been reading all of this stuff about rooting and loosing the radio connection and something about the data encryption breaking everything O.O!!! Holy crap. I just wanna root it, find a good rom and dev to support and enjoy it. This is what I do on my current daily driver, my old OPO. I've been trying to look around, search, and read to make sure that I avoid all of these issues mentioned but so far I've not found a concrete explanation of why said issues happen. Not new to rooting/flashing at all, but HTC devices always seemed to of been touchy when it came to custom stuff, and I don't want to explode this thing. My main problem is that I've been away from HTC for.... well since early 2014.
My current knowledge of android stuffz tells me to:
1) Unlock Bootloader via ADB
2) Flash TWRP/Other Customer Recovery
3) Find sweet rom, flash and spend hours customizing
4) Flash xposed and go crazy with modules until the phone explodes and then scale it back to a realistic level
5) Enjoy Phone
6) Cake
HOWEVER... I remember HTC devices having a bit more complication due to things like... RUU and firmware.. I don't even remember what RUU means lol... But I remember when I had my M8 I was always fighting these dang firmware issues. While I ended up with a fantastic experience, I remember fighting for almost 2 months or so to get it to behave. Battery was out of control, phone was crashing, camera exploding. Oh man it sucked, but finally someone really cool was like... "Yo dude I had these issues, this is what you have to do with HTC stuff" , and after a full hour of flashing shiz I had the phone running smoothly and behaving correctly. Something about... you had to flash each level of the firmware and then reboot and...something. Like you couldn't just skip to the latest firmware? I don't remember exactly.
So anyway, the main question I have is. Could someone either
A.) Point me in the direction of a post or something to study to understand what to do and not do. I've searched but not really found anything solid. Something for folks who've been off the HTC scene for a while.
B.) If there isn't really a single post on this, perhaps if someone doesn't mind explaining this (even pm is fine) to me so I don't explord this expensive mofo and cry.
C.) Give me a hug, because I am nervous about having a new device O.O , it's been so long and I'm so used to Cm13 and xposed and all that jazz. I is be scared.
I would be grateful to any and all help/support.
Anyway, thanks in advanced guys and gals. :3

I was in the same boat haven't owed an HTC since the Fuze running Windows lol and have been a loyal Samsung user since the S1 so the whole adb fastboot thing was a little overwhelming. I followed the guide in the forum and had a few hiccups but overall went pretty smooth. Adb is definitely not as user friendly as Odin on a Sammy device but not to difficult. My only tips would be make sure you have all the latest drivers, twrp, and adb installed. It seems pretty hard to permanently brick a device these days from my experience so I wouldn't worry to much. As far as the radio not working, as long as you keep your device encrypted you won't lose your radio. I'm sure the devs will find a fix for this soon enough. Enjoy your new 10!
Edit: I'm using a lexar 128gb 633x U1 micro sd and all is well. Worked with adoptable storage also but felt a little sluggish so I went back to using it as external storage.

Well I am comfortable in adb :3 so that's not a worry. So un-enecrypting it is just an option, and I should just avoid it for now? What is the advantage of un-encrypting it?
What guide did you use? Also, what about all this firmware and ruu stuff?
Sorry for so many questions... Lol this thing wasn't cheap and I am nervous , BTW what setup do you have? Root? ROM?
Thanks for replying :3

From what I understand unencrypting breaks the radio. With it unencrypted you would get slightly better performance and boot times I think. I would definitely avoid it for now. I'm currently using twrp with Viper 10 rom. I've also used leedroid and still trying to find which one I prefer. I've only had my 10 for 3 days lol so I haven't found my sweet setup just yet. I left s-on for now as I don't really need it off.
No idea about the firmware and ruu stuff. I made a backup of stock rom before I started flashing. I'm pretty sure there is or will be a repo with factory firmware, radios, etc. I don't know what ruu stands for either lol.

I'm on my third htc10. Exploded last two after rooting haha. Really not hard mate. Just read the guides provided and ask any questions you need. Most ppl on XDA will be helpful, and some will reply like me lol.
BTW, simple answer, unlock phone via HTC Dev, then flash Viper. Done.

Alright neato, so do I need to ensure I let it download any and all OTA's for the firmware before doing anything? Is s-off safe to get as well in regards to the issues I referred to in my OP above?
And his is this viper? Does it allow things like settings similar to cm and also allow for xposed?
Thanks for replying man, I feel more comfortable now as it sounds like there isn't anything crazy required to safely root this thing . Phew!!

I got an M9 for my wife not that long ago and just had my 10 show up today and gonna root. Just do like the other dude said. Find a guide that says how to use HTC dev to unlock the bootloader. You can't just enter a command in adb like "unlock bootloader" and have it work. Go to the HTC dev website, make an account, pick your device and it walks you through the steps of unlocking the bootloader. That's really the only semi-difficult part IMO. Then proceed as normal. Download twrp, make a stock nand, download ROM, su binaries, kernel, etc. etc. go to recovery and flash. I'm sure there's a couple other steps in their but that's the basics.
As for Viper, it tends to come with so many mods built in, I'd personally be kind of reluctant to use xposed with it to to much modifying. It's a great ROM, but so is leedroid You can try each and see what you like, but if you want to more safely use xposed I'd personally go with leedroid.

Oh right, I do remember about the whole HTC dev website thing. I was mainly just concerned with the firmware issues and stuff that I had before.
Is there any kind of limitations for reasons not to upgrade to the highest available firmware? Something like, maybe the highest one can't be rooted yet or something like that. I just want to make sure that I don't shoot myself in the foot haha.
Thank you all for your help

Hey, I'm not sure about firmware not being able to be rooted but the best way to go about it (what I did anyway) is to unlock the phone via htcdev.com, flash a custom recovery (Latest TWRP which has also worked around the encryption stuff?) and then back up everything other than the data partition. That way, no matter what you do, you always have something to revert back to. The reason for not backing up data is due to the encryption. From my understanding, restoring an encrypted data partition would break things. Once you have the phone unlocked and recovery sorted, you are free to flash viper etc. and root the phone using SuperSU. I'm sure you are aware unlocked devices are quite easy to root so whatever you flash will most likely be on latest firmware, already rooted.
As for installing OTAs etc., you need unmodified system and recovery which is where the backups kick in. Simply back up your data on an SD card (pictures etc. not the actual partition) and restore the system-image and recovery. This should reset the phone although I'm not sure if it'll wipe anything and allow you to do OTA updates. Alternatively, get the latest firmware for your device from htcdev (again, not sure if they have firmware on there) and use that instead.
If any of the information above is incorrect or missing steps, someone feel free to correct me.
