Not connecting to 4g much - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

Hi starting to get worried about this device I had it on 4g once on three UK and it performed well same signal strength as my note 5 same speed but now it's gone to H and can't get it to ever switch back to 4g. My note 5 connects to 4g with full signal all the time Everytime. I love this device but this is starting to seem like a theme with low cost devices like axon 7.
For the first 3 seconds after inserting the sim or enabling data it's on LTE then switches straight to H.

Mines the same pal on three UK, it's got a crappy antenna my nexus 6 would give higher data speeds on 3g and 4g and would connect to 4g all the time, as I'm typing this at home my signal has switched from 4g to 3g and 4g at my house is beast on my nexus 6.
#neversettle

Well I've had it 2 hours it's going back I've now learnt my lesson on cheap phones.

Been testing signals out, here are my findings.

I've been experiencing the same 4G issues like everyone else, so for the past two days, I've been doing tests of my own to figure out what's going on, and here are my findings.
I noticed I have 3G issues after having 4G on and it switches to 3G. So, for the past two days, I've been only running 3G and I've been getting excellent 3G coverage, signal, and speeds.
To get and keep good 3G signal and speeds, turn 4G off, and let it switch to 3G. Then do a battery pull, leave the battery out for a minute or two, then put the battery back in and don't turn 4G back on at all.
I'm getting great 3G signal and speeds everywhere I was getting great signal and speeds with my DX.
Now, yesterday, I turned 4G on just to see what would happen, and I had two bars of 4G, then it switched to 3G for a few seconds, then to 1X and stayed on 1X for a few before I turned 4G off and did a battery pull. I never get 1X here, not even on my DX.
The above test tells me that there is a problem when the device switches from 4G to 3G. But, leaving the phone on 3G works perfectly, just like it's supposed to.
I will also report my findings to Verizon in hopes that it may help them track down the problem.
Until then, I'll stick with using 3G only which works perfectly on this sexy device.
I am on T-Mobile but Engadget had an article about VZW being aware and working on a patch...

It will eventually hit 3G but doesn't authenticate as quickly as it should. I just leave LTE off until I, for some strange reason, need 20mbps.

That interesting. I had a couple connection issues when I first got mine. Was still on 4.0.1 and rooted/unlocked right out of the box. So when the time came to update to 4.0.2, I couldn't.
I had terrible service but never seemed to slow the 3g speeds down. What was weird was, when at home on wifi(my connection is 18mbps), my OG Droid was loading Youtube faster than my Gnex. Gnex kept buffering and loading. Once I updated to 4.0.2 that was resolved. I almost returned the Gnex. Glad I waited.
Also, I do not have 4g here where I live so I keep it turned off. I just returned back from Nashville TN where they do have 4g and switching back and forth was not a problem for me.
Phone rarely shows more than 3 bars regardless of connection.

[Q] Anyone else's Nexus take a long time to get data connectivity?

Like the title states. When I was doing the initial setup with the phone I actually had to connect it to wifi since the 3G connection hadn't been established. Roughly 3-4 minutes before it connected. Same issue across roms and even the leaked radio. This happens during android os startup and airplane mode.
Maybe I'm spoiled but my OG droid data connection was usually established within 30 seconds. The Droid Razr I was "renting" was the same way.
Is anyone else's LTE nexus this way? Is this another quirk of the phone. Or do I have a defective radio?
Mine takes maybe 30 or 40 seconds for a 3g connection. Way way longer than my Sprint phone does.
Try changing to cdma only, instead of cdma/lte, see if that helps. its possible the phone is looking for a 4g signal first, or if its too weak to connect, then reverts to 3g
I've found personally, that initially, turning off/on data, both 3g and 4g take longer to connect, but if left on and running, it switches back and forth as necessary & quickly
When I switch to cdma only, it takes a long time to connect . Same when I switch back to lte.

I live in a strong LTE region running the leaked 4.03 radio. Where the signals are strong, eg in the middle of a street, the radios are great. But surprisingly, this combo experiences 3G+4G holes where my Sprint phone works fine on 4G.
Switching WiFi to strong 4G signal seems to take 20-30 secs.
Switching from no signal reception to good 4G signal seems to take well over a minute.
Btw, not sure how long it takes to switch to 3G. It does happen when I enter buildings but I am not watching the signal indicator change.

i've been using the leaked radios for a bit, and have had significantly faster switching wifi->4g, its almost instant now, and even for 2-3 bars. No signal->4g does take me a bit too tho.
As for Sprint, they have different antennas, and could be covering different areas, and on different towers than verizon
I've noticed the slow switch on both 3g and 4g. This includes switching from 3g to 4g and vice versa. Inside buildings or in the streets, it doesn't seem to matter.
The city I live in was one of the test markets for 4g, and I can get a 4g connection pretty much everywhere but the outskirts. 4g speed tests aren't in the wow factor like the Droid Razr, I mostly manage 10-12mbps down and 1-6mbps up.
I think I'm going to take a little trip around my local Verizon wireless and hit their test units to see if the same thing happens.

Questions about 4g!!!

So my area is scheduled to get 4g the 17th but I had a few questions about 4g...
First of all how do you tell if you have a bad lte radio? Does it just not connect to 4g or does it do something else? I've been testing to see if I got it yet everyday and it hasn't popped up even once yet so I'm not sure if I might have a bad 4g radio or not
Second of all how long does it take for 4g to pop up after switching to cdma/LTE? does it usually connect to 3g first or just go to 4g?
And thirdly if I have a poor 3g signal (says about 80-90 dbm but my 3g speeds are usually around 200-400 kbps), does it tend to carry over to 4g? (just as in slower speeds than if you have a decent 4g signal)
Hello.
To answer your question about the lte radio... If you aren't sure if your area has 4g and are trying to test by turning it on or off I think your best bet would probably be to ask someone else (who has a 4g phone) if they are obtaining the network. If possible, you could go somewhere you know for certain has 4g (if theres anywhere remotely close) and try it there. I doubt you have a bad radio if your 3g signal is working, have you flashed any roms or are you running stock? If you think the radio is bad you could always try and flash the most recent ones.
The time it takes to switch from cdma to cdma/LTE is almost instant. When you do so your blue 3g bars disappear and it turns grey. After no more than 5 or 10 seconds it will connect to 4g (if its available) and display the blue bars. If you're in an area with both 3g and 4g the phone will automatically connect to the 4g first if it can.
In my personal experience I've noticed that if you're in an area with bad 3g reception the 4g will be about the same give or take a little. I also believe that even if you have poor 3g and 4g the LTE will still have a higher data transfer rate.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for...I know a couple places not too far that have 4g for certain, and as for comparing to other 4g phones to see if they have 4g I can probably just check the local Verizon store
I'm definitely hoping for at least 5 mbps download for LTE speed, which I'm sure is fairly easy to get, I can't stand average 3g speeds of 100-500 kbps and maybe 1 mbps if I'm lucky
I'm supposed to be getting 4g officially here tomorrow so hopefully it all works
Thanks again

[Q] Sprint's S3 phone not compatible with 4g?

Hi there,
I have had my Sprint Galaxy S3 for quite a while. This pass month I see that in my area, i'm getting switched to 4g rather than 3g. I was thinking to myself, this is great, they are rolling out the 4gLTE soon and i'll finally get the speed that i'm paying for. After a couple days, i noticed that the 4g signal was getting cut off. Cut off as in i don't get any data signal at all. I would think that if i can't get 4g signal, the phone will switch over to 3g but that's not the case. My data signal is totally gone for about 5 to 10 minutes and comes back as 4g. This was getting very fustrating as i will be browsing the internet and then suddenly not get any data and would need to wait.
So i decided to call Customer Service. What the CS told me was that the S3 is not setup for 4g WiMax but setup for 4gLTE. But I told the CS that i'm getting 4g WiMax on my phone but it gets cut off for a long period of time. CS understands that we can get the signal but the phone doesn't react good with that signal, therefore, i'm getting cut off for period of times.
So the solution that the CS gave me to get constant data signal is to change my "Preferred network mode" from LTE / CDMA to CDMA only. I was taken back about this because I feel like i'm downgrading because of Sprints issues.
My question is, anyone else having this issue and can't find how the 4gLTE icon looks like for the Spring Galaxy S3, mine only says 4g, is that the LTE signal?
The s3 only supports lte, so yes the 4g icon is lte. No the s3 can't connect to wimax it can't even see wimax as an option since it doesn't have the hardware. It would be like trying to use your bluetooth headset to connect to your wifi Internet, just isn't gonna happen no matter how many different ways you try.

I like to break stuff!
Most likely they are working on the tower your connecting to. Anytime the do work upgrades your signal including data can go wacky untill the work is completed.
No Galaxy S3 on any carrier can get Wimax 4G. These phones can only get 4G LTE. And i believe T-Mobile gs3 can't get LTE not 100% sure but i believe so.
Turning your phone to CDMA only will lock your phone into 3G only.

As Evil said, when you see the 4G icon its connected to 4G LTE. Its not like the iPhone that will say 4G LTE. Im having the same issue as you are. Its great that LTE is rolling out in my area, however they are still updating towers. So I don't have great LTE speeds yet. So I've turned off LTE on my phone until there update is complete.

[Q] No Mobile Data, WTF?!!

Decided to leave T-Mobile after 14 long and lately excruciating years... So, I go to Best Buy last night, signed up with Verizon, got me and the wife two brand new Galaxy Note 4 phones. LOVE the phones, but for some reason, and according to Verizon it is an "odd problem", we have NO MOBILE DATA!!!!
Will not even work, when it does it is stuck on 3G and the speedtest.net says 0.22mpbs download... I mean, wtf is in this thing a 9600 baud modem? :cyclops: But seriously, anyone else have this happen?
No problem with mobile data here. In fact I get 4g reception in fringe areas I normally didn't get in on my note 3. Since you just bought those devices I'd exchange them both and get new Sim cards, that's definitely not normal or acceptable. Oh and it's a shot in the dark but pull down the toggles and make sure sync and mobile data is on.
I have a note 4 and was on tmobile just before I jumped to Verizon. I am not impressed so far considering the cost vs others. I rarely get more than 2 bars and I am in NYC. It's surprisingly bad for signal quality considering we are in 2014 and I have a new flagship device on the supposedly best network in the country.
might just be your area, when i travel i get 60-70 mps 4g lte but at home i get spotty 3g
