Ok, the notification was still there so thought i would try the update via my PC, it failed on numerous occasions so i gave up.
The notification is still there though
Just force close the app. It's a temp solution that would need to be repeated each time you reboot your phone.

Why don't you freeze the update service in titanium backup, no pesky notification and you can defrost it when a new update comes out

Also its only on the paid version now. Unless you have 3.99 to get it you won't be able to freeze. I don't know why they took that feature away from us the stingy b**tards. I have the same problem but I just did it a different way. I made a backup using TB and then uninstalled it using TB. nd now is all good. Why take the freeze feature. Not everyone has 3.99 to spare now days. Especially when we have bills and shopping to pay. Grrrrrrr

Update:
12/1/2013
The tutorial below was tested with Android v4.2
I am not sure if it works with v4.3 and higher.
For those running 4.3 or 4.4, please feel free to offer any insight.
Thanks
I read where a lot of people don't like Google Hangouts, and would like to install Google Talk again. There are GTalk files available, but installing them proved to be unsuccessful for some, which prompted me to find out why.
Below is a short tutorial showing how to get Google Talk back back onto your device. I have no doubt others already know how to install GTalk on devices with Hangouts installed, but many don't, and after searching and not seeing a how to, I started this thread.
I've tested this successfully on my rooted T-Mobile M919. I've not tested this method on other devices, but I don't see why it wouldn't work for others.
1) download Google Talk:
http://d-h.st/9Uf
2) go to Titanium Backup
3) find Hangouts system app
4) make a backup of Hangouts
5) un-install Hangouts
6) reboot
7) using your file manager, find the talk.apk & install the package.
8) Enjoy
If you want to install Hangouts again, un-install Google Talk, reboot and
re-install Hangouts using TiBu.

Uninstall update is not an option in the Playstore. Only 'open' & 'uninstall'
In:
Settings
Application manager
All
I uninstalled updates but Hangouts remains in the app draw and Talk is not found.
If I've overlooked something, please let me know.
I'll reboot to see if that restores Talk.
Edit:
Rebooted, and Hangouts still there. No Talk.

Yeah, that's why -
If your ROM came with Talk, then you can uninstall updates and get back to Talk. Whereas, if your ROM came with Hangouts, then uninstalling update won't work.
(And here, by ROM I mean the ROM istels or GApps package you flashed. )
Just out of curiosity why do you like talk over hangouts? To me hangouts has everything talk had and more, not sure why I would want to go back.

Personally, I've used Talk very little and never tried Hangouts.
The reason I started this 'How to' thread was because I found others that had Hangouts wanted to install Google Talk like they used to have on other devices, but we're unable to install Talk. I looked around and didn't see any clear directions on how to do this, so by trial & error I figured it out and started this thread
With the above being said, I've read many who prefer Talk for its simplicity, in addition to being able to tell who is available for chat if they're on their pc etc. which you're not able to do with Hangouts. I'm sure there are pros & cons for both apps, and sometimes it may just come down to:
- those who are familiar with a service they've used for years (Talk) and figure it works well so why change it.
- If it 'ain't broke, why fix it?'
- the KISS Principle (keep it short & simple)
Others who have used both Talk and Hangouts will be able to offer more specifics
I don't like hangouts either. I have a modified talk apk somewhere on my computer that disables the stupid play store notification to update.

Google should listen to their customers and split Talk from Hangouts. The later seems aimed at teens and people who enjoy selfies.

I just tested the tutorial again and I was able to install GTalk.
Follow the steps exactly.
If you still fail to install GTalk, as I mentioned in the op, I've tested this on an M919, not other devices. If you've followed the steps exactly, then there appears to be an issue installing GTalk on the Sprint S4.

I am using Samsung Galaxy S3 4.1.2. I never installed the update to GTalk from play store since it was going to replace it. Anyways I got a an OTA update of about 80mb I installed it and I got a software Play Games and my GTalk has been replaced with hangouts. From the app manager menu when I go to the hangout app it only shows the force stop and disable option and not the uninstall option. In the playstore it is showing me that there's an update to it. How can I remove this crap software? I cannot root due to warranty issues, sorry.

Hey guys I just installed the update and it broke my root :cyclops:
Were you able to root again?
Apparently it's D85110m update. So it's updating from D85110c to m. The person that I saw that updated hadn't rooted so no clue on the rooting thing.
Count me in the group with system update notification. I got rid of it by installing xposed module GravityBox, going under status bar settings - ongoing notification blocker - Google Play services (picture looks like that of update) - reboot.
I don't know what other notifications this may block, but for now, it gets rid of that. Also of note, I would NOT take the OTA. Usually it breaks root and/or bootloops you.
HELP
So in my half awake brilliance, I installed the update. My phone is now boot cycling to the TWRP recovery. Any ideas?

I haven't tried to re-root yet. I was rooted with stump root earlier. Stump root doesn't work again because it thinks that my phone is already rooted. I'm going to do some light battery tests before trying to root again, this time with purple drake.
Maybe i might restore the slimkat alpha and hide there until this gets sorted out
I decided not to update to fear my bootloader/root so I tried to extract this with file manager and kept crashing. I can only post the name of the file but above users are correct contains 10m from 10c hopefully devs can find out exactly what's in the update. b1847cae892006ffa11c6822a408fe8528142a54.D85110c_00-D85110m_00_update.zip

I believe so yes. But if you are truly bootlooping, I don't believe you have many (if any) other choices than wiping clean and starting fresh.
I'm all stock so I upgraded.
It is in fact D85110m
I've only had it up and running for a few minutes and I already noticed two things.
- There is a slider feature added to the lock screen to instantly open the camera.
- I didn't think the phone was sluggish or laggy out of the box but I immediately could tell it runs smoother now with transitions between screens/apps. e.g. There used to be a bit of lag when opening the Recent Apps. Not anymore.
We'll see how it goes.
The IR blaster works better for me now. I guess the update made it more powerful somehow.
if you have twrp installed or have modified /system you should not take this OTA. if on twrp things will get weird(as evidenced above..) and if removing/modding any default files in /system the zip will most likely fail.. as it checks for all original files first before the OTA update gets patched in.
as for the twrp issue.. I can only assume that it's due to the update/phone expecting stock recovery... and not getting it. there are flags set in the phone that tell the phone what mode to boot into... since you dont have stock recovery the phone is confused. check out this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451696
the fota and misc partitions are tied to this... try to zero out fota first. if that alone doesnt let you out of twrp... you may need to wipe misc. be sure to backup any partition to computer(dont just save on phone sdcard.. never know when it could get wiped..) before erasing anything.
as for this update(10m)... anyone taking it should be careful that the bootloader/downgrades have not been locked/blocked. I'll be waiting for others to take that risk first before even considering taking the ota.
*update* can confirm update is safe.. bootloader is not locked.. still rootable.
as for root... I doubt purple drake is blocked.. but is possible. I'm very sure Stump is still available as an option(tho app may need update).
if you got the update and dont want to take it.. and want the notification gone you should be able to use a file explorer to delete the update zip from the the /cache directory... as well as rename the LGFOTA.apk file in /system to LGFOTA.apk.bak.
I can also confirm that disabling OTA updates in the hidden menu works. the moment I set it back to "on" (i set mine to off day 1) and rebooted the update came in.
d851 hidden menu > wlan test > ota setting > off > reboot (if you have been notified of an available update do NOT reboot until you have deleted the ota zip first)
I rooted, S-offed, and flashed my phone with a 4.3 rom (Stock+). Everything is great, but the problem is that my phone keeps re downloading OTA updates and then telling me I can't update since system is modified. I selected the option to download only on WiFi in settings, but it continues to download using my data. It's used over a gig of data so far, and I'm nearing my limit, so I'm forced to keep mobile data off all the time. How can I disable these updates?
I've tried freezing the HTC DM process, but i guess it's not the right one. I can't find any forum posts which tell what I should freeze. I will flash another rom eventually, but I don't really have time to backup all my data and apps at the moment. Just want to be able to use data with out worrying about it getting sucked up.
Edit: On 4.4.2, not 4.3

Don't want to update the phone though. Wouldn't that just update it to a new stock firmware and remove root?
I should also mention this is a T-Mobile rom as I'm using the phone unlocked on it, if that makes any difference.
I'm still having this issue, does anybody have a solution?
Why don't you want to update?
I can't guarantee this will work on 4.3 but try this.
Download DisableService from Google play
Under system tab find Google framework services or something like that
Disable system update service
If you can't find it search for system update service with the included search
This might get re-enabled when you reboot your phone though so just uncheck it if it comes back when you reboot

I found the service, but the odd thing is that it was already unchecked. I reselected it then unchecked it again, hopefully it won't come back. Thanks
If that doesn't work you can try using titanium backup to freeze updater

I have had zero luck in getting Titanium Backup to work properly. Even when trying to restore data, it causes the app the crash resulting in me needing to uninstall and reinstall (not even wiping data helps).
Any steps I need to follow?

I'd really love to get this working as otherwise I'll have lost all SMS data. I backed up before wiping my phone, but the Google backup wasn't available for me to restore from...even my plan B is failing X^D

I got around to doing a full flash yesterday (even full flashed both slots) with the .c factory image. Also got the canary MM and canary Magisk updates early this morning. TiBa is working fine for me. Just a shot in the dark, but are you running EdXposed or any other modules/modifications (Substratum themes) that could be causing issues? The only modules I have loaded are MagiskHide Props Config, Active Edge System Mod and systemless hosts. My BusyBox is Stericson and not the module.

No other modules or mods installed, not even a custom kernel at that point., but I found that part of my problem is that TiBu corrupted my messages backup. It took the better part of an hour to back up, but the backup file is only about 350 KB...I'm crestfallen, lol. Never had an issue like that with TiBu, been using it for years. Didn't even think to check that the backup was saved properly.
Lol, I woke up this morning and flashed back to Android Pie so I could restore my messages in TiBU, and then back them up some other way and then roll forward to 10...only to discover this. Talk about salt in the wound.

I heard that. Anyone who's been around this scene a while knows at one time it was great and a must for all users.
You can send logs in to TBU bug tracker web page. I'm sure they have a lot of people sending logs and writing them and it's probably hard to keep up but I sent some logs not long ago.. I never saw anything updated or anything because of my logs but...? I sent the maximum amount you can at a time and then filled out another report and sent more. Who knows...
I've been using Migrate NG from here on xda to backup my user apps and data from user apps. Works great! Check it out! Also from what I've read Swift app is supposedly the new good backup app that works but if you don't have pro you can only backup one app at a time and same on restore. Not sure why they don't do like a three day trial to let us try if out in pro version before we buy it...But from what I've seen they do not. Definitely check out Migrate app, anyone who hasn't. Works well on my OnePlus6t and the xda thread is active so if for some reason it doesn't work on your device there is help to get it to work.

I'm just going back to Pie and run it until the wheels fall off (like Kitkat). I don't like a lot of things with Q and breaks too many fundamental legacy apps and features imo. I can't really blame the old school developers for not supporting every autistic brain fart google comes up with.

I loved pie!! There are some awesome substratum themes too that lost support after pie... I hear you man. Many roms imo seemed to be better on android 9 than now. I used to like when android evolved and up graded to next version and now I don't because of exactly what you're saying here. You look at a nexus device back on say 7.12 and then now... Sure battery is better optimized nowadays but in my opinion those were the best times for android. More roms, themes, sound mods that were made universal (arise audio).. Android 7-9 was killer! I just know how much of a security risk it is using things that are that outdated... Especially nowadays! There is probably a way to patch an older version depending on how old it is.. I mean I see roms being made still for nexus 5x that are android 10 based now.. Good luck!
