I join, I too would like to have the opportunity to install it
Theoretically it's possible now since Microsoft mistakenly released the SecureBoot key. You'd have to find the key, unlock the bootloader then load up the Remix OS installer, install it and then reboot. I haven't used the PC version yet, but since the Surface 4 is an X86 PC almost everything should work, you may have issues with the touchscreen or anything that is specific to the Surface 4.

That's interesting. How did they mistakenly release the secure boot key if they supply it on their own website??

it works fine but only with keyboard. Touchpad doesnt work on surface yet...

Awesome! I've never had a Surface and I thought they all had locked bootloaders up until recently. I've been contemplating getting one to replace my desktop (well not really replace it, just to relegate it to being a sole purpose gaming machine/HTPC for the living room) and to replace my Pixel C (it's a nice device but it has it's quirks and I'd rather have an x86 install of Linux rather than an ARM build of Android since I can do more), but the only thing that's offputting is the extremely high price for the Core i7 models with 16 gigs of RAM considering they're about $1700-$2500, but then again you are getting a beastly computer that's about half an inch thick and weighs a few pounds.

Well. SP4 is a really amazing device. All android emulators work on it really well too. Emulators will give You around 80k antutu score and remix os 180-200k. (i5, 8GB)
Recently intel published official linux kernel with touch & pen support for sp4. So You can quite easily compile it and enjoy full functionality with linux on board .
I'm trying to test how that works but my new usb drive just won't boot on my sp4. I'll have to ask someone if they can borrow me a usb drive.
Awesome! I was looking around at tutorials for installing Linux on the Surface 4 and the only complaints were that the touchscreen and pen didn't work.

Yesterday I got it to work!! . That modified kernel thingy does actually work. But unfortunately only pen works on my device, it's really smooth and stuff but yeah. Finger isn't recognised. Although maybe on Debian finger touch would work too.

Nice! Modified Kernel Thingies usually do the trick hahahaha I wouldn't doubt someone already has a PKGBUILD out for the Arch Linux Kernel (my favorite distro).

not to be a **** but dont post about stuff you dont know or understand. all it does is perpetuate nonsense.
surface PRO models have an option to turn secure boot off, allowing changes to bootmgr. the secureboot key
you mentioned (golden key) allows non-pro surface models ( aka RT models) this same access to boot mgr.

Android uses Linux for the kernels, the rest is something else I believe. This thread is talking about full Linux.
As good as this sounds, and/or Ubuntu or open WebOS, it's not all about the OS.
If other handset manu's don't "buy into the idea", then you have a single company with limited apps and limited support and no real infrastructure.
Apps are a huge deciding point when it comes to what people buy.
Phone A with android and a million apps? (apps = designed specifically for phone)
Phone B with ios and a million apps?
Phone C with ubuntu and 100 apps?
Phone D with tizen and 100 apps?
Phone E with Win Phone 8 and 20k apps?
Without the infrastructure and apps people won't come to it. Without people, developers have no desire to create apps and infrastructure. Catch 22.

Linux is the kernel. That's it. There is no "full Linux" as you put it. What you may be thinking of is GNU/Linux, which is the Linux kernel with the GNU userspace overlaid on top of it. That's what almost all Linux-based desktop operating systems (like Ubuntu, Debian, Mint, Slackware, Arch, etc.) use.

Yeah I was referring to the way Linux is on desktops, sorry about that. Thanks for correcting me.
The more options, the better. A duopoly isn't ideal for the consumer. Android is great and all, but more choices never hurt.
"Microsoft will not be releasing full updates of its new Windows 10 operating system for any of its Surface devices running Windows RT or Windows RT 8.1." - ZDNet
Microsoft themselves killed RT, and consumers & media were totally fooled by them.
Well done, Micro$oft.
what with lumia 2520?
is it 100% official? what do you think?
It's already done. I wonder if the Surface(s) can be switched to UEFI Setup mode. (I can't disable Secure Boot in my PC, but I can add my own Secure Boot key through Setup mode)
disappointed ...
Hello.
personally I'm realy sad
I was a early adopter of the RT os with the first gen of Surface.
I believed that Microsoft will help developpers to push their applications on this platform.....I was wrong
I choosen a microsoft product (surface RT) and not an other to be sure to receveid update and support ... I was wrond, again.
Now I can't imagine to sell my tab .
That's why I hope that Microsoft will listen his (RT) customer and will deliver us a way to unlock the UEFI bootloader to run unsigned app.
It could be a way to give a second life to our devices ...
but, i'm dreaming...

I hear you. I'm hoping for the same thing. Did you sign the petition by any chance?
Bring out dat JB
Around the middle of last year some people were saying an 8.1 jailbreak existed but people just didn't want to release it because they thought a major update was coming. That didn't turn out to be the case, though, but yet a JB still wasn't released. Maybe it was all made up?
That is most likely the case.
It is a shame, not that windows 10 will not be released for the device, as I'm not particularly fond of the operating system, but that this implies that any software support for the platform from Microsoft will cease. Obviously anything critical regarding security and whatnot will persist for a little while due to a modest business market. The devices also made it into schools following the massive discount so perhaps it'll persist at least for another release cycle.
That being said it does make the acceptance of the petition more likely which makes my aspirations of getting a functional free software licensed LaTeX editor running on the device, ridding me of the need to purchase a chromebook to run fedora on until I actually have the funds to do so. Getting something like mpv running also sounds nice (but seems out of my depth given it requires more than simple recompilation.) Does DXVA exist for the RT platform? I'm unaware as to how hardware decoding has been implemented in any existing RT applications.

I don't think so as it doesn't seem common, the surface rt devices use either Nvidia Tegra 3 or Tegra 4 depending on the product your looking at.
And I don't think there is any additional circuitry for hardware decoding.
So maybe you can go look for the ´Tegra 3/4 specifications and find out yourself.
I think it would be really nice if we could get a Linux version running on these devices. I'm not a fan of Linux, but it's a far better choice for extending the life of these devices.
Heck, i'm still running windows RT 8.0 because there is no usable irc client in the windows store. There are tons of things for Linux that would very likely work if we just could get Linux running on these.
If the windows RT was opened up that would be nice but unlikely. The Linux porting would be more likely but pretty hard to do

It will be called Windows 10 RT because it is incorporating things from Windows 10, based on windows RT. We won't get full Windows 10. Maybe they'll unlock it so people can port desktop apps? (Not likely) we may be able to upgrade our Microsoft apps though imagine! modern internet explorer!

If I had to guess, maybe RT users will get MS Edge? I wouldn't mind getting the start menu from 10 but it's likely not happening. Better .NET support for RT would be nice too (would be too much to ask to be able to run VS or maybe VS Code on our RTs)

With 4gb ram and relatively powerfu intel lZ3580 64bit processor it looks like Asus zenfone can run windows 8.1
Anyone knows how to do that?
There are other threads discussing this, but theoretically we should be able to. I prefer going the chroot/wine route but the processor dies support vmx, so we could try chroot/qemu-kvm for full pc emulation.

Just because it has an intel processor doesnt' mean it can run windows. BIOS isn't same, doubt that 8.1 has the proper graphics driver, boot process isn't styled like a PC, etc. In short, I wouldn't hold your breath.

MrCpu You are right, it pob has a better chance running Ubuntu. Man it would fly too.
Why doesn't ubuntu go mobile .?.
Please dont be too harsh in reply, I dont know why but it just flashed in my head as lightning fast on a device like this.
If you are rooted, you can install chroot apps from the play store like linux deploy & XServer-XSDL is a really good Android X server, so you can install an Ubuntu distro really easily.

It would an interesting novelty to see a desktop Linux distro or Windows 8.1 running natively on the Zenfone, but would be of no actual use. Windows is just about OK on an 8" tablet, but even that is a bit cramped. I've had windows running on my ASUS memo pad 7 (not really running on it, but using the display via Splashtop) and that was too small. On 5.5" screen it would be unusable.
I did some thought experiments on this and then i promptly decided to do a real experiment and after many tries and different methods i got the state below. so i would say its very hard and dangerous and requires you to know the grub command line but its not impossible.

The Meiigoo S8 has now been announced and along with that introduction comes confirmation of the full specs on offer with this smartphone. What is likely to be one of the main points to note is that this is a device that follows in the footsteps of a number of high profile 2017 smartphones by utilizing an 18:9 aspect ratio. The inclusion of this edge-to-edge design allows the Meiigoo S8 to make use of a smaller physical footprint compared to what would be encountered with a device adopting a more traditional bezel level. As a result, the Meiigoo S8 features a larger than usual 6.1-inch display, but within the body of a smartphone more often associated with a smaller display. A design aspect which not only looks to add a premium touch to this smartphone, but one which is also designed to offer a more comfortable holding experience.

The highlight features of the S8 are that it sports a 6.1-inch HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio which takes up 83% of the whole front panel and coated in dual-sided 3D curved glass. Spec wise, the S8 is equipped with a powerful MTK6750T octa-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz, 4GB RAM, 64GB of storage, expandable up to 256GB, dual rear cameras (13.0MP + 5.0MP combo), rear fingerprint scanner, 5.0MP front-facing shooter, USB TYPE-C, 3300mAh battery and Android 7.1 Nougat as the OS.
Stay Tuned for New updates and Review.
I'm not seing much Meiigoo on XDA and wonder if this phone will get rooted. It would be nice to have a "utility phone" to play with. Assume it will be pretty bare bones Nougat (but at least 7.1)
I doubt XDA will have any development, i just got the phone yesterday and an testing it out.
Can't compare it to other phones, since I don't have any, but mine is behaving surprisingly well. It's my secondary phone, so obviously it's not under a lot of stress, but I can honestly say I notice no bugs or problems some YouTubers are having. In fact I am quite happy with it. I only wish the camera was better, but for such a low price the phone is a steal. I'd love to see some cusom ROMs developed for it.
Who knows how to upgrade from Android 7.0 to Android 7.1? In menu: "settings -> about phone -> phone status -> Wireless update" it says that my device's software is up to date...
The photo of Meiigoo S8 in first post is not realistic. The display is not borderless. In attach the real one.

Phh 9.0 GSI works but with a few bugs primarily Bluetooth and camera. But also it has a wonky navbar and notification pulldown but those 2 are aosp bugs
I have edited the v25 phh 8.1 gsi and added ro.sf.lcd_density=320 to the build.prop which makes it so the screen isn't super zoomed in. I will work on doing something similar to vendor in the future so its persistent over all gsi's.
Here is the download
Twrp:
I have gotten twrp working on this device, currently, decryption is not supported due to the limited space on the recovery partition. But the keyboard and stylus do work in recovery.

Thanks for doing this, hope to see how other ROMs function. Can you also test a Pie GSI?
Thanks for this, I'm considering getting this tablet. Could you possibly do a video review? There hasn't been a good one in YouTube yet.
I'm going to assume that you are the only one doing any development with this tablet? Which is fine either way, it just let's me know once I get my tablet, how long the wait will be or expect for custom ROMs. Thanks again.

I don't plan on doing a review or anything i got it to do development on it. GSI's are working on it, i am planning on getting a device specific rom up and running soon. Working with the hi9 air and hi9 pro devs to see if we can make something that is compatible on all 3.
Thanks for the update. Can't wait to see all what you come up with!!
I asked them directly about buying the keyboard case separately.
It's not listed on their official Aliexpress store so you have to buy 35 units of "Extra Shipping"
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/pr...l?spm=2114.12010615.8148356.55.63bb4c05f2hzru
And tell them you want a keyboard case.
Oh and thanks for TWRP.
Anyone that hasn't flashed anything yet, can you tell me the current security patch level?
I could swear that I saw June, but after flashing the rom provided by Chuwi it's at February.
Also it seems far more sluggish than it was before flashing.

Yeah the firmware they provided is older, the one shipped on the device was june i have asked for updated firmware and was told they are working on it.
Oh good I'm not crazy.
I don't suppose you have a backup of the current one?

No sadly, i am in the same boat i assumed the firmware would match what was shipped so i didn't grab one.
Let's hope someone else out there reads this before they flash.
Or Chuwi releases whatever is current.
NA
GSI is apparently doing some amazing work and possibly working around the clock. It's crazy to see that there is a partially working 9.0 rom( or lastest Android version) so soon after device release!
For anyone interested, I found the keyboard for 17 dollars, however the pen still like 27 dollars no matter where you go.

The problem about the pen is that you can use the tablet for 2-3 years maybe, nut if you lost the pen is very pobrable that you won't find it online after just 6 month, if it is not a chuwi standard (and as far as I can see it's NOT a standard).
BTW I have problems checking out the keyboard site, are you sure it's a sure online shop?
Thank you!

I just try and everyting was ok, but $9 shipping fees are pretty high. Grandtotal is ok anyhow due to the very discounted price. This is another addon that you might buy as soon as you can since it's already hard to find.
The rablet is sold at nice price by [email protected] and you can buy the pen as addon for €17 (maybe $20, but you save A LOT on shipping fees!!!)

It's just a normal Wacom active pen, I tried out my Lenovo one and that worked properly on it.
