Has anyone converted a TabS 10.5 from WiFi only to 4g? - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone bought a parts only TabS and used it to convert a Tab S 10.5 to 4g? What parts would need to be swapped out? I'm guessing the motherboard of course but is there a separate 4g radio and antenna?
Thanks in advance

Bit pointless even trying. You'll practically need a whole new unit.
You'll even need the middle assembly that has the opening for the sim card.

That's what I thoght. Guess I'll just find a 4g AT&T tab with a broken screen and swap in my screen. Thanks

Wouldn't it just make more practical sense to just sell yours and buy another?
What you propose isn't that simple.
Also you realize that some USB 3g dongles work on the Tab S too.

Just as a reminder, Sprint's network sucks. The Yesterday Network has become downright embarrassing. If it was on a GSM provider or Verizon's that be one thing.

Same here! I pre-ordered this bad boy already. Can't wait. These two weeks are going to be torture. I'm temporarily using a Samsung Reclaim for God's sake!!
A question: I posted this elsewhere but didn't get much of a response. You all think that for root / flashing custom roms purposes, will be coming to the same thread? (this one)
I'm asking because the US variants seem to differ in several ways and I'm not sure if all the variants will be discussed/rooted/developed on the same thread. Any guesses?
Also, you guys feeling pretty sure the bootloader will remain unlocked? (Man, I hope so).
What do ya think the battery life will be like since it has a larger screen? It says up to 8.7 hours of talk time
not a big deal

Have to say, I've been trying to figure that one out also. With the slightly different hardware, I wonder if we'll be using the same place. Annoyingly like others noticed already - having it as "epic 4g touch" is giving me fits trying to find info as easy as it should be. lol

Is this phone an SGS II?

I just got this phone 2 days ago, it's t-mo branded, says Samsung galaxy S II Android 4g when it boots. Yet looking at some of the pics in this thread, my phone doesn't look like the ones depicted.
How do I tell which phone I have exactly?
Thanks.

This forum is for the international version which is different from the carrier versions, you can check in settings>about phone and it should tell you your exact model number, you can then google it to get more info about your specific device
Like the original Galaxy S, there's over 9000 different variations based on each carrier. This is the forum for the international S2

Well, instead of asking strangers, since it's a T-Mobile phone you could have gone here:
http://galaxy-s.t-mobile.com/samsun...zygt*VAygtzlw*VyBpAgf+mA55Byf*VyBpAgf+mA55Byf
Or, you could have put "Galaxy S II" in the nifty "find your device" box in the upper right hand corner of the forum. You'd have found this:

Thank you all. I'm not new around here, but again thank you for the information.

Your Tapatalk says you have the T-Mobile T989, which is a Galaxy S2 in name only. (It's a Samsung, it has a sAMOLED+ screen, but nothing else in that phone has anything in common with any other S2.)
There's a T989-specific forum if you go to the main XDA forum page and search the page for T989.
I got my phone through T-Mobile. Came via UPS.

T989 is T-Mobile version of the Gs2 family. your screen should be 4.5' instead of 4.3' and more rounded shape

And the T989 is the one variant I know of that doesn't have an Exynos - it has a Snapdragon CPU instead.

Is there any possibility of increasing the internal memory?

Hi I just had a thought that can the 16gb internal memory can be increased to 32gb or more. After all its a hardware. So can the memory be replaced by a higher capacity memory chip? Any computer engineers around pls share ur thoughts on this.

well if you good with a soldering iron and can remove the chip without damaging the board then sure.....go for it

you would have to solder the chip off and resolder a new chip that fits exactly where the old one did.
(basically the answer is no, not easily)

exactly, you'd need a soldering Iron, exacto knife, and a chip by the same manufacturer and the same pin count and they need to be in the same positions
Oh so that means it will totally ruin my phone.. I didn't knew soldering iron and all other stuff would be needed. I'll be happy with my 16 GB

its not a like a desktop where the RAM is chips that you can insert into a slot. Stuff in a phone is soldered on the motherboard and is 1 entire piece. Radios, RAM, CPU, everything is hard connected to the board.
an alternative would be using a usb otg cable to connect a sd card.
Go get the seagate goflex

engineer here, my advice:
don't try it
Use dropbox, google drive, etc if you need more storage space. If it's really an issue, you shouldn't have gotten a Nexus.

They don't make a GSM 16gb Galaxy Nexus? The CDMA version is 32gb.
If you were ambitious, you could try to find a tear down of the CDMA Nexus and find the 32gb part and source it. Then, find a way to remove the 16gb part and solder the 32gb part back on.
If it's anything like the ns4g, the memory just pops off. No soldering needed. It looks just like a little mini board and has almost same kind of pluggies like a computer.

Want to return to the Galaxy Nexus

So about a month ago I sold my white Galaxy Nexus to buy a Galaxy S III (t mobile version) I'm considering returning to the Nexus but since I had to cut my sim to a micro size will it still fit in the nexus?
I'm on the $30 unlimited plan btw

I did the same thing this week. I bought 1 of those cheap microsim>fullsim holder/adapters from eBay & everything is fine. Really pleased I sold the s3 now
Can you post or inbox me the link to the one you bought?
Edit: found it. Thanks

i am on T mobile with a micro sim since I have one s. You actually do not need any adapter. All you have to do is put the sim inside the sim slot and line the gold connector up and the phone will work without any issue. The Sim slot is pretty tight and the sim card do not move around in there. The placement of the GNex sim slot i also quit easy to line them up and insert the sim.
I think as long as you do not suddenly drop the phone, the sim should be quite secure in the sim slot,
ps, if you are dumping hte GS3, I can trade your my Nexus, hahahaha

While it would work, I'd save myself the hassle and just spend $1 on an adapter so that the SIM can be easily removed and you wouldn't have to worry about it getting out of position.
Just go get a new sim from T-Mobile Shouldn't coat anything

i do agree with you here especially if you swap the sim in and out. Be careful what sim adapter you buy because some of these adapter can potentially misalign the connector. Also hear people have the adapter cause the connector to break or bent. I am actually thinking of getting the adapter as well so I can swap between the phones If you find a good one, let me know.
BTW, if you are going to go back and do not plan to switch to microsim, then yeah prob easiest is to go to TMO store and they should be able to switch it for you for free.
The reason why I sold it was because I thought with the additional 1gb on ram and a fast processor it would be a great device to move to(Gnex had outdated specs). Also another factor was the poor speaker volume on the nexus. Yea yea I know you can improve the gnex sound levels via app tweaks but by far the sound is MUCH louder on the Galaxy S 3. One more thing, on average I used to get around 4mbps down in the Brooklyn NY area since the gnex only had hspa+ 21 but on the galaxy s 3 I get around 6-7mbps since it has hspa+42
Honestly the main reason is lack of quality ROMs and developers in the T-Mobile section(cm10 is buggy as hell). Also I kinda stood out having a white Gnex . Now every other person you see has a white Galaxy S 3.. ughhhh.
And I miss the CRT animation. Currently the Galaxy S3 is incapable of doing the animation because it breaks other functions..
I can go on and on...
