I now have hotspot capability on my phone, but haven't been able to get it to work. I went to Settings>Tethering And Hotspots and thought I set it up (wireless, not tethered), but I can't get internet or PC Radio. I'll admit I'm a dumb*ss noob and thank you in advance if anyone can give me a step-by-step tutorial.
I was able to pair my phone hotspot with my computer, so I know it was active. And I did see the head unit terminated wi-fi from my house and a different signal icon appeared. If you need to know anything else, please ask. Thanks again for any help.
EDIT: I figured it out-I was overthinking it. I didn't need to get into Tethering And Hotspots. It was there in Wi-Fi.

Hi guys,
its time to renew my mobile contract and I would like to have the HTC Desire.
But before getting it, I would like to ask a question.
At home, at university and at my friends home I have internet connection via Wifi, so I figered out I don't need a data option in my contract.
Now the T-Mobile guy told me I absolutely need one, because the cell phone connects with it to download updates.
In a youtube video I saw someone switching to wifi only at the welcome wizard after first power-on.
So, now my question: I'm really most of the time connected with wifi, do I really need data option????
I don't use social networks, so friends steam has no updates, same with the weather!!
Thanks for answers
Technically you don't need a data contract - you can switch off mobile internet and just rely on WiFi.
However, IMHO, if you're going to do that you're probably better off with a dumbphone and an iPod Touch, because you're really not using the phone as it was intended and you're going to get infinitely superior battery life.
Just an opinion - I appreciate that there are plenty of reasons why you might want the Desire regardless!
Regards,
Dave
Ok, thanks...
And yes, there are plenty of reasons.
Whats with vacation? E.g. when I go for two weeks out of my Wifi area?
Will it go online then or wait until I'm in Wifi again?
Btw: In my area there is only Edge available, so even if I wanted I can not use it as it was intended to!
Dennis
If you switch off mobile internet, it won't go online via the a cellular network.
If you want to be really, really, sure that it will never go online via cellular, you can delete the APN (i.e. you are worried you or someone else will turn on mobile internet accidentally).
Regards,
Dave
OK, that is a good idea.
I made that with my very old phone i bought 2003. There you had the option to set more than one APN profile. So i made up an empty one and made it the default one.
So I could switch to the real on in case I really need it.
Maybe you can tell my how to do this in android if you have time?
But thanks so far for your help.
Dennis
You can add the APN in the Phone settings. Not that different from WM
But I only use the Internet connection switch on my desktop.
I can simply switch it off and the phone will never connect to internet via GSM.
Unless someone messes with your phone and turns it on again it is a 100% guarantee that it will never connect via GSM.
I don't bother with APN anymore.
Hi guys
First thing my desire is unbranded and unrooted.
Ever since applying the last OTA my portable hotspot has stopped working.... I connect to a data network no problem, but when I turn on portable hotspot, I loose the data connection. I can see it trying to get the connection back but it loops for around a minute and then gives up with no errors.
My wifi has been fine since the upgrade.
Has anyone else seen this or have any ideas how to fix it???
Many thanks
David
I'm not sure this is the answer to your problem, but hey maybe it is the answer so someone else's problem
A Wifi device is either a client or a server - not both at the same time.
If you tell the phone to be a Wifi server, and it was connected to a Wifi network then that connection ceases to exist.
Next it will broadcast its own Wifi network for other devices to use. Those devices (and your phone) can then browse the web, send mail etc. using your 2G/3G connection, and they can talk to one another using local ip addresses handed out by the phone.
I hope this cleared things up, if not for you then maybe for someone else
Yup - experiencing an issue whenever I select "Press to turn on".. doesn't seem to do much of anything (beyond the Processing dialogue).. and while I get the Icon in the Notification bar there is no hotspot available. Can't configure it either..
similar specs on the phone... unbranded / unrooted

I hope I am posting this correctly. If not please forgive me in advance. My Evo (3.7 update) is rooted with Unrevoked and all Superuser permissions are intact. All my "root required" apps work correctly. My problem is that tethering will not stay connected, wired or wirelessly. I can connect and have internet access for about 5 minutes, then I lose internet connectivity although the phone shows still app running. I did not flash any specific roms, only rooted the phone because I'm okay with everything else on the phone. I have tried pdanet, easy tether, barnacle wi fi tether, and plain wifi tether. I have tried tethering different devices and still can stay connected for no more than 5 minutes. I then have to close the tethering app and restart to get another 5 minutes. Did Sprint enable something in 3.7 update that's causing this? I never had this issue on my rooted Hero. And finally, I am not in a 4g area so I'm doing this all 3g. Can anyone please assist me. I was almost tempted to pay the 30 bucks until I came to my senses!
i Cannot find the answer to my question any where, is it possible to get the wifi from my phone to other Device, Use my phone as a bridge?
IF so How can i do this.. Thanks.
You can with the mobile hotspot feature. I connect other phones to mine.

Oh well your first post didnt really say that but I get it now
I dont think you can do that.
Hey all,
My device has a problem...one my carrier doesn't seem to know how to fix and I can't seem to figure it out either. I'm hoping someone with a little more wifi knowledge in android will be able to help me.
The gist of the issue is that my device connects to Shaw's Passpoint wifi hotspots despite how good or bad the connection is. So I'll be sitting at my desk and my phone doesn't have data anymore because it moved onto the Shaw network instead of the office wifi. It's not as simple as just forgetting the Passpoint wifi as for some reason it's been locked by my 'administrator'.
The official solution from my carrier was "Turn off your Wifi" this is not an acceptable solution. I'm willing to provide any information you may need to have a permanent solution to this problem. The antispam won't let me post a link to the screen grabs. Pm me and I'll send the link to what happens, or search Imgur for "Freedom mobile wifi disaster"
I'm almost ready to flash a custom ROM just to get rid of the Passpoint issue it's that frustrating
