One M9 Prime CE - gap between screen and frame - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I have my HTC One M9 Prime CE for a week. I think it was a good choice, but I noticed one disturbing issue - small gap between screen and frame. This is picture of it:
i.imgur.com/CdmDflW.jpg (sorry for non-clickable link but I haven't 10 posts)
I hope it's clear enough.
There's not any other gaps. This one is very thin, but backlight is clearly visible between the edge of glass and metal frame (not visible if screen is even slightly pressed there). It's possible that dust particles will get between glass and display or will affect backlight? It would be annoying for me. I think that the whole display is bonded and it's not real problem, but I'm not sure.
Of course, my phone is under warranty, however I want to avoid repairs because of a lot of bad opinions.
Thanks for feedback in advance.

One month from the release date... Do you have any troubles with Desire?

Hello, guys, I heard that there were a lot of technical problems with desire:
build quality and pinkish display. Do you have problems with back cover?
Or any other problems? Maybe scratched screen? Please tell us something about your experiance I just had already 2 phones, which back cover (I mean the thing that covers battery, not sure how it is called in english) just dropped out easily... don't want to repeat such hell with HTC Desire...
p.s. sorry for my english
I have just sold my HTC hd2 to get this and all I can say is **** winmo, I love tech, I'm an it engineer by trade and can say without a doubt this phone is the best XD. well done HTC, their are a few minor flaws but in my opinion no deal breakers.
I would highly recommend this phone .
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
I have no troubles with backcover, the screen isn't scratched (but I treated it very gently, with pouch and everything). The pinkish aura is clearly visible when the screen is dimmed after not using phone for a some time, but in normal use it's barely there. I'd never know about this if I hadn't read this forum. I have no complains about Desire, it's great
would you advise to buy a case for desire?
or it's ok just in a pocket of jeans?
and what about this photo? http://robbiekhan.co.uk/root/photos/stuff-room/htc_desire_Red-Desire.jpg
would it be reasonable to look for the device that look like this desire on the left, than on the right?
so I can just go to the shop, lower the light brightness and check if it is like on the right or on the left?
i have mine in a nexus gel case with a screen protector in my jeans every day, no problems.
i put it in a pouch with the gel case and screen protector when its being slung about in a bag.
i would even bother checking the pink screen thing, unless you plan on having it on minimum brightness all the time. move the slider about the width of the slider bar and you wont be able to see it. (mine isnt as bad as that pic though, maybe 2 slider bar widths if you have one like that, lol)
Build quality is fine. What do people do with this phone anyway: use it as a bat?
Pinkish is something that appears with certain grey screens. For the rest, white remains white. It's not that much of an issue.
More relevant issues are:
*no divx support (but H.264 will do fine)
*various issues with contacts/synchronisation (see the relevant topics)
*Android Bluetooh stack is still in infancy
Conclusion: what technical issues?

[GUIDE] How To Test your One X for defects in store

Ok I promised some of you to write how to test the One X quickly for possible defects
First
- check the list of possible defects: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24516940#post24516940
- The most widely reported defects are between HT23 and HT242, anything above HT24D (mid April) should be newer, check how to figure the batch date in here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25872020&postcount=17
Before you turn it on
- Test if the screen's gorilla glass has lamination or fitting defects, run around the edge of the glass and make sure its all fit, not loose or flexing in any side or creaking bad, there shouldn't be a large gap between the metal rim and the glass, one side might be fraction larger than the other but anything bigger might be worrying, if a very slight creak happens in one corner it might be ok, you will have to judge it yourself, the screen has to feel rigid all around, the most important is the left and right sides they should look flawless like this and this
- Run around the metal frame around the screen and check for any gaps between the metal frame and the unibody
- Check if the metal frame around the screen has clean glossy coating, sometimes it comes with very coarse coating, its best tested by looking at reflections, it looks very cheap like this
- Check the unibody frame and the matte coating, whether the quality is to your liking, the straight line in the glossy side is normal its in 90% of them
- Check the camera if its not too off center, rattle sound on camera shake is normal
- Check if there is dust under the screen while it's off
After you turn it on
- Run your finger and gently press around the screen edges, the LCD should not ripple unless pressed hard intentionally on the outer edges, any ripple in the middle of the screen and or easily triggered ripple from the edge or corners is a defect
- Go to a dark page and make sure there are no dead pixels in dark areas
- Go to a white page and make sure there are no black dead pixels or scratches under the screen, then check at angles and make sure there are no hot white spots/pixels, double check so you won't regret, example here and here
- Check for yellow spots keep in mind they might go away or return, very bad yellow spots are usually a sign of bad screen lamination
- Check for uneven yellows in white areas, keep in mind it might go away in a week of use
- Many of the units have a grain visible in whites at angles, still unconfirmed if it reduces with time, double check to see if you are ok with it like here, update: been seeing this in so many laminated devices like the iPhone4 i think its normal
- Go to the gallery and test the snow plus sun image, leave it paused for view seconds and double check if there is repetitive brightness flicker, check at full brightness, low brightness and auto brightness, keep in mind a slight one time brightness adjustment is normal on Tegra3
- Early units had a jumping screen image so double check
Once you are done checking the screen
- Go to phone and dail *#*#3424#*#* and run the HTC test app
- Run the LED test and check they are working properly and check they are fit well they should light inside one of the micro holes and not misaligned
- Run the G-sensor, light sensor, p-sensor and backlight tests
- Run as much of the other tests as you can like vibrator, flashlight and camera tests
- Keep ind mind green corruption glitches in the video app, camera and browser are due to drivers in the included 1.26 software it was solved by update 1.29, so don't panic if you encountered those out of box
- Place your Simcard and make sure SIM is working by making a call, turn on wifi and bluetooth to test them, 3G and GPS
That's it, its a flawless One X, hopefully
Feel free to ask me for any clarification
just , what i was waiting for , thanks man

I have a problem with *#*#3424#*#* Before unlocking the code was accepted, now nothing happens. I couldnĀ“t open the tests.
Thanks, checked mine just now. Seems perfect
spoke to one of the lovely people at htc and they said to me the ripple effect that you get on the screen is normal due to the screen being lcd and it should be like that. i was like maybe for a TV yes but not on a smartphone.. she did not know what to say when i showed her to go to a few of the threads here. poor woman did not what hit her...shame they do not spend a bit of time on these forums to actually see what people actually want instead of doing what the suits tell them..
anyways mate good thread just wished we knew about it earlier.
There's a single dust particle underneath the camera lens.
Fuuuuuu
Edit:
Also have the ripple effect on the sides, less on the right side. Doesn't bother me that much and I'll accept that it's an LCD thing.
You know the funny thing, here in India they won't open box until you buy it. Even if they lose a customer. If he we very lucky we get to see the DEMO piece. But i'm sure this guide will help people.
The thread you linked doesn't show you how to find your batch date

LCD ripple is the most varied thing on the One X, 90% only happes on outer edges intentioal pressure so no problem, a rare few don't ripple unless ur almost breaking the glass and a rare few are completely defected, ripple all over the place
This thread is awesome for potential buyers!! Just one thing, could someone make a video of the HTC Test App and how to use it properly? It would be a major help for first time HTC owners..

I linked the specific post bro,

Just to let the OP know.
There is a mistake in the image link in this line under "Before you turn it on":

Very few sellers will allow you to break the seal on a product to check it before buying. That said, it's a good guide.

i've been checking so many devices, including iPhone 4 and Desire HD, they all have this under glass grain visible at angles, guess its perfectly normal
Awesome post will test on my 2nd One X thanks
Thanks for this. I just picked up a second HOX and it appears to be flawless.
Great post
I just read your thread and apparently I got mine almost a week ago and just noticed some little creaking on the top right corner of the screen when I applied a rubber case. It also happens everytime I press it, however the vI tried figuring out of it mostly occurred when the device is hot or in idle. Could anybody give me sombre abuse if there's is a need to send it back and ask for a replacement?

[Q] build quality & service

Well, I got my Nexus on thursday, but immediately I noticed a problem .
At the bottom, the glass is slightly tilted, on the right is raised above the frame, while on the left is recessed ...
these are some pictures I took
I talked to the shop and they told me that they will solve the problem (repositioning of the glass) ...
What I wanted to know is what happen when the phone is opened, because on my current Nexus One, after first service, i have tons of dust entering between the display and the glass, and obviously I don't want the same thing also on this phone
So, do you have some experience with samsung's assistance ?
thanks!
anyone ?
As long as it's purely cosmetic, I wouldn't risk (or waste the money) having some guy open the phone to even out the glass.
Mine is the exact same way at the top of the screen, and I only noticed mine a few weeks after having it just because I was looking very very closely at the screen.
However, the problem it's quite visible on my phone, the difference between the two corners is about 1 mm, and with the glass that protrudes from the frame is even more subject to scratching ...
I don't know what to do ...
there is no one who opened the phone ?
The what you call a "glass" is the whole screen, so there no any way you get dust particles under it, as there no "under" , maybe the glue that hold it not have not dry good, I remember SGS2 have some yellow tint, or maybe it was SGS1, anyway things like that do happen to some devices.
Are you sure?
I have always found that touchscreen ("glass") and the display are two separate things
I'd return it for a replacement, that's an obvious build defect cite that you fear it'll either get worse or become a leak source.
Also, I am relieved I don't have this issue although I'd expect that I'd notice it quickly as you

[Q] OT: Maybe silly question: self-healing display?

Dear All
I encountered today a fascinating issue: taking a P5220 in one hand, I felt a crack under my thumb: the display had very thin cracks and I was shocked, how sensitive it was.
I looked very carefully at it: definitively very thin cracks in at least one or two layers of the display, could be seen clearly by looking from a flat angle. Tried also to "clean it" - definitively cracks in (at least) the surface
After 4 hours they were gone. Completely.
Does anybody know if there's a use of self-healing material? Just out of interest.
If NOT, be warned about the sensitivity of the screen!

[Review] GPEL Tempered glass

The GPEL screen protector is fantastic! No dot matrix, full adhesive, comes with 2, affordable, case friendly & no Halo affect.
The black border is just a tad too big, so you lose a row of pixels..

Thanks for sharing the review!
Hello,
Does the black line cut from the sides of the screen ? Or the bottom ?
Thank you !

I currently have this protector, as stated in the OP it cuts off a little on all sides and is it a bit crooked. I have plans to review another screen protector (might be the one) in a new thread soon
So, anyone that sells this internationally for less than 15usd for shipping?

Care to share which one? I just picked up a g7 yesterday, have a SUPCASE UB Pro on order, want to pull the included plastic shield, put on glass.
The gpel sounds good, but I'm interested in seeing what else looks solid. (Not interested in going to the $50 dome glass.)

I have 2 g7s one with gpel and dome glass. Do you want a side by side comparsion picture. Either is perfect and has flaws

Dome is on the left and GPEL is on the right
Dome - doesn't affect the sensors but it's smaller than the actual display. It's a bit too short on the left and right sides. This causes light bleed on the edge of the screen protector. Dust magnet but less likely to have bubbles
GPEL - affects sensors and black borders cut off display and is especially noticeable when watching YouTube videos in full screen pinch. Bubbles can happen

It can cause the display to dim and sometimes turn off like when you raise your phone to answer a call. To be fair all full cover screen protectors are suffering for this flaw. Even OtterBox is getting massive hate for their version and is temporary unavailable.
Just to let you guys know,
You will NOT have the "notch" border pixel line problem if you perfectly align the holes at the top with the sensors, but with a catch: you have to align it with the sensor being more towards the bottom than dead center. My very first screen protector had it more towards the top (basically, the entire protector aligned downwards 1mm, which made the notch very prominent). Then I wasted two more trying to make it bottom aligned. (edit). That fixes the sensor problem and the pixel problem at the top with the notch, unless you are looking down at the phone from above the phone (and who the hell does that?). Unfortunately, perfect alignment is expensive and will cost you several screen protectors since you have to deal with lifting and replanting as well as small nudging WHILE you are in a steamy bathroom hoping for no dust hairs to drop on something. Took me three of them to get it perfect. But I got perfect and I'm pleased.
The left and right sides black bars aren't a problem; the missing pixel line can always be seen by looking to the side of the phone. Just remember to focus on aligning the TOP first (edit) align the ridged sensor so it's almost touching the bottom cutout) and then pressing the top down, then the middle. That's the hard part. This will also cause a few air bubbles on the sides, which means you will have to carefully lift the edges and press outwards to reapply again, and make very sure your fingernails are spotless. That is going to be the risk of dust getting in there, so be careful. Get it perfect then everything will make you happy.
The results are worth it.

My proof is me owning the phone and going through 4 GPEL screen protectors before I got it perfect. I paid my dues. And as someone disabled and on SSI and with a fixed income, I don't have money to go through infinite screen protectors, unlike some of you people here.
The trick is to align the "ridged" sensor so that it's (edit: just looked at my phone: the hole aligned at the -bottom- of the ridged sensor, rather than dead center! but not blocked by the edge of the screen protector), sensor bottom aligned and then after that, making sure all the sides are perfectly straight when applying (a LOT harder than you think, even in a steamy shower, because I'm in an old apartment). Took me 4 protectors and cost me over $30 dollars. (air bubbles and dust from me constantly having to re-lift to get the orientation perfect and eventually dust getting under the edges, and I have OCD so I want nothing less than perfection). Might even give GPEL an email and see if they'll send me an extra sample for my troubles. And no, I have no way to take a picture of the phone screen for you.
I forgot that I had it 'bottom' side sensor aligned rather than mid sensor aligned because I spent over 30 minutes in the shower sweating and uncomfortable wasting screen protectors trying to get rid of the notch line and getting it on with air bubbles. I was extremely stressed out, and it's difficult for someone with a metal bar in their spine to have to work that hard. Needless to say the fourth protector (thank god) I got absolutely perfect.
If it's dead center yes you will have a pixel row of the notch visible. So you have to 'raise' the protector upwards by that same pixel space. There's enough cutout to work with to make that work.
This is no problem because the very *BOTTOM* of the phone isn't used by the display (since this is an IPS display; someone mentioned this in a review, compared to OLED), unlike the top, so you have like 1mm of extra room to work with for the cutout (as long as the top sensor isn't blocked by the bottom edge of the protector). The black border at the bottom won't interfere with anything (checked with a screen test in the service menu).
I'll -try- to upload a picture of the phone with my laptop's built in camera if I can later on, but please don't be upset if you don't like the quality. My laptop isn't high definition and isn't made for such precise pictures. 720p isn't going to work very well.
@Falkentyne - thanks for the explanation.
It sounds like the critical part is where the protector is relative to the front mounted speaker (towards the right edge of the notch) front mounted camera (center of the notch), mystery circle to the left of the camera, and tiny notification led circle furthest to the left side of the notch?
If a photo of your own screen is hard to get, I've attached a photo, the top part of the g7 screen. Maybe draw a line showing where the gpel edge needs to be (outside edge of the line = outside edge of the gpel).
This is the best I could do.

In your picture, move the screen protector UP about 1mm upwards so the bottom is where the red line is.
This will leave about 1mm of 'extra' space above the sensor area (whatever that thing is, sensor, microphone, I don't know). But it will still fit fully into the enclosure.
Took me 4 screen protectors to do this AND have no spare dust hairs from all the relifting !
Perfect thanks!
Just over the bottom edge of the front speaker (the oval on the right with the grid pattern).
I just got my gpel protectors in today, will give it a try tomorrow.
I installed it following your suggestion, it seems to be working fine. Thanks for the info!

Glad you got it working and got the results you wanted.
It's good that the cutout is slightly larger than the speaker(and sensor/camera) itself, but bad that people won't know about this without experimentation (or somehow coming across the posts here).
