Hi all,
I have an ASUS R600 GPS running WinCE 5.0 core. I unlocked it using AsusPocket (ASUS customized version of MioPocket to keep things such as bluetooth) and everything seemed fine.
However I'm running against a "low memory" errors when running certain navi software such as Navigon and iGo. The device has 64 Mb of RAM which should be plenty for these, as my cheap Omnitech has the same amount and has no problems.
With help of MioPocket guys, I traced it down to a massive \Windows in this device's ROM. It is like 25 Mb as they dumped not only every dll they could find there, but also eg a lot of big wav and bmp files. Couple wav files are close to 1Mg each! Since according to these folks \Windows just gets copied from ROM to RAM on startup, I end up with far less free memory to play with than I'd like.
I'm new to ROM cooking but with some help I'm sure I could do it. To keep things very simple I was thinking of just replacing these big wav files with a small one. This way the file count and names wouldn't change and I wouldn't run a risk of ever running into a "file not found" condition. I really don't care if on startup the device plays a simple "ding" as opposed to 20 sec sound. Since soft that I want actually runs and only gets into low memory condition on more complex route recalculation or reality view screens, I think this would be enough to get me over the hurdle. Of course, any checksums will need to be regenerated as needed.
So, at this point I have downloaded upgrade ROM images for this device. Is that something that can be disassembled, modified as described above, and put back together? I tired naively unleashing dumprom on one of these .bin files, but got back "unable to determine loading offsets" error. I guess I shouldn't be surprised as at this point I don't know what I'm doing...
Can anybody offer any help to me? With all the amazing things I read on this site people doing with ROM modifications, it looks like what I'm trying to do should be a walk in the park. Am I right trying to go from upgrade .bin file? Or should I get some tools to read off the device? Please help.
Btw. if anybody'd like to peek at this upgrade bin, it can be downloaded here: hxxp://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?modelname=R600&SLanguage=en-us, in the firmware section, version 4.3.0 and version 4.8.0 for NA users. Unfortunately no direct link.
Thanks in advance

Hi all!
For the past 3 weeks I have been making small changes to the build prop file inside the Android /system folder.
These changes incorporate not only a increase in speed but also stability.
What I would like to see happen is one of 2 things, or both if possible.
1. Incorporate this build.prop file into the various "System_Froyo" builds available, forcing these changes on initial install, or
2. Vogue/Polaris developers browse the file for contradicting information (things that won't work on a Vogue/Polaris) and make appropriate changes.
Improvements include:
ro.ril.disable.power.collapse (prevents sleep of death),
various dalvik vm improvements,
force hardware acceleration and performance tuning,
various telephony enhancements including ring delay time and data speeds.
After making these changes, the phone rings immediately, the UI is much smoother (GUI uses video processor primarily), and data jumped from 1.3Mb/sec to over 3.2Mb/sec, making web pages load faster. (EDIT: The 3.2Mb/sec is the top of the scale, I actually averaged 2.2Mb/sec with average pings between 300-500 across 3 different radio roms).
VOGUE/POLARIS OWNERS!
Please test this file and report findings here.
IF you find you need to remove any lines, please do so before copying the file into /system. This file works well on the AT&T networks (Cingular), but may not have much effect on other networks.
If you have trouble after installing this file, please post your bootlog file.
PoX
So may I know what rom support this?
This has only been tested on a "clean" Froyo build, so I cannot make any assumptions as to if it will work in Gingerbread/Eclair/Donut/etc.
If everyone follows the install guide on the front page, I would assume that it would work worldwide, as long as it's Froyo.
In the future I could try it out on Gingerbread and other builds, but I make no promises as development has all but ended for Android on MSM72**.
I can test this. Perhaps, kaiser on Android could be good for daily use?...
Thanks for sharing

I'm interested in your new build.prop tar, but I do not understand the thing about the install guide, you mentioned in you second post.
My Kaiser is running CM7 RC3 on haret, so maybe I can do some testing on gingerbread, with you.
Your trials, about tweaking the app download possibility, sound very interesting too, as I read about a tweaked build.prop for a tab that simulates to be a samsung tab in combination with an older version of the app market.
Feel free to PM, although I'm quite a newby to android.
I can build with Fresh Froyo and try it, but not until April sorry.
I am currently traveling and away from a development system.
I have been slowly trying to get a reliable app2sd capability working.
I'd suggest searching old posts for power collapse to see if dzo or others long ago tried this.
It sounds promising.

The "install guide" I'm referring to is here...
How to replace Windows Mobile with Android (Guide)
There would be a change to the original build.prop file which exists inside the /system folder and would be installed when Android is installed on the Kaiser.
Mind you, I live in a busy city with LOTS of cell towers and, since 3g works on the principle of multi-tower usage, YMMV. If you live way out in the country with maybe 2-3 towers nearby, this may not help you.
Also, this has been tested on a NAND-installed OS, not a HaRet install. I cannot verify or guarantee this will work with a HaReT install as I have no way to test it and I think of HaReT as the "slow cousin" to a NAND install.
On a side note: My Kaiser has not had one sleep of death, hard-lock, white screen or even an FC for 9 days now. Apps running out of memory can be a slight problem but they will just close on their own as opposed to FC-ing. at worst I've had one hot reboot called by the system, and the FCs' are few, even with heavy Facebook and Maps use.
n2, if this works on all Kaisers, is there a way to push it to SF and either add it as a mod or rebuild the "system_froyo" install files and incorporate it within?
I will try in early April. Until then please solicit Vogue and Polaris users to try it.

I am interested and willing to try this out!
Where is your " "Fixed" build.prop file for Kaiser "?
Tarball added to OP, please test and report back. Any problems should be reported here along with the bootlog from your phone.
Hi guys!
Problem occured when moving file to root folder. To solve I tried root explorer and z4root both. CM7 + Krazy-Killa's Kernel on tilt 8925.
Please talk what to do with it!
thanks!
Rename original build.prop file to "build.prop.old" or something you will remember, without the quotes, then paste the new build.prop file into the /system folder... it should go right in with no errors, unless you try it without read/write abilities.
CM7 may already have some of these fixes installed in the existing build.prop file. To check, open this build.prop with a text editor and check the entries under "additional build properties".

Vogue/Polaris users solicited, although I'm not sure if this can be used on a CDMA network. Last count shows about 15-20% of the "other" phones were Vogues, the rest were Polaris users.
It would be nice to start getting good feedback since this would be my first actual "hard" mod (one that is installed with the system, not modded through some other installer/program).

Can't rename. And can't change file attributions read only to read/write.

You probably need to remount /system read/write. I just wish I could remember how. Been a long time since I put my vogue down.
If you can get terminal emulator up on that phone, I believe all you would have to do is type in "su" then "mount /system".
All Kaiser/Polaris/Vogue Android builds are rooted and usually have superuser installed. I will take a look into Scoot's CM7 and confirm this. I know there is an update to superuser that leaves the old binary unable to be updated.

Hi! Thank you!
What does exactly I have to do in terminal emulator?
I would hope you have superuser capability, if you don't then use another build that does have them...
Anyway, this is all I could figure out to remount the /system as RW. Type the following below into terminal emulator...
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock2 /system
(Where "mtdblock2" has /system, "mtdblock3" has /data, and "mtdblock4" has /cache.)
Hope this helps...
Please correct me if i'm wrong.
I installed this new build.prop from the bootloader using androidupdate.tar.
Because i made a tar archive this way: system/build.prop
Isn't it the easiest method? No mounting and hacking in terminal emulator.
Anyway, do anybody know which ROM contains hungarian language? I gave my Kaiser to my father and it would be great if he could use it in hungarian.
I thought VaniljEclair 11 has it, and it is almost true. It has hungarian language but when i set it nothing happens. Everything is in english as before.
Thanks!
Edit:
You can download it from here:

Hey there,
somehow XPrivacy is unable to find it's licence file...
I've put it in the root folder of my SD card as described in the activation instructions. (Which seems to map to /storage/sdcard1/XPrivacy_license.txt) But this had no effect.
In the about section XPrivacy tells me it would expect the license file in /storage/sdcard0. (See attached screenshot)
I also copied the license file to that folder without any effect.
Any ideas? Did anyone else have trouble activating XPrivacy on their Fairphone?
Hi seesawCharli,
I did not install a pro version but the normal one which you can choose in Xposed Installer - Downloads.
First it did not work but then I realized, that it must be installed in the internal storage (I did choose intall apps in phone storage before).
After moving it (both Xposed and Xprivacy) to internal storage (via settings - apps), rebooting, activating it in Xposed Installer - Modules, rebooting again - it worked.
I am not sure that would fix the issue in your case - but it may help the next one...
Hi sidingFP, thanks for your answer.
XPrivacy is running fine. In fact so well, I decided to get the pro version
But at first I also had your problem with several other apps until I figured that some apparently need to be installed in the internal storage.
Edit:
Solved it! I had to put the license file in the root of the phone storage, and not the SD card, as the phone storage seems to map to /storage/sdcard0/.
It was really confusing to see another folder called storage/sdcard0/ in the phone storage (so that would map to /storage/sdcard0/storage/sdcard0/), that was the wrong place to put the license file.

Hey there! These are default icons, no customization needed (at least on my Fairphone, I guess they might look different on your Xperia)
From left to right:
WiFi signal strength, this icon appears when you have logged into a wireless network.
Signal strength for 1st SIM card
Signal strength for 2nd SIM card, these two appear only when you have inserted a SIM card. The color can be customized in the options.
Ah okay, thought it was some customization i dont know about but like
...appreciated u taking time to answer me though. :good:
All the best :highfive:
WHAT DO I DO: "Error: The play store says not licensed please try again later or ask for support"
Hi, so I have a Surface RT, I was able, after a lot of effort to jailbreak it and enter Test Mode so any desktops apps that are meant for arm are working fine.
The problem is that now my Windows Store went bananas, I tried fixing it with some tutorials I found online, but nothing I can't revive it. Only option I would have would mean I recover the full tablet, install all updates only to later have to uninstall half of them and go trough the pain of installing the jailbreak again. Winch seems alot to get a app to work.
So I tried appx files, I tried installing using the powershell command as seen on some tutorial, winch gives me a bunch of errors, most of them are for libraries that are missing winch I do understand some of them just won't work for rt, others because the "app model" is set to 0 where it should be 1, I tried changing it to 1 but another error pops up saying the recourses.pri is missing or faulty or something on those terms. Tried with other apps but all just eventually ended in the same resources.pri error. Or that the os version it was requesting was higher. Since the appx were from nifty online sources I figured they would not be that compatible.
Later I tried Windows Apps Boss, this time i went to the official windows store (using IE) and downloaded the offficial files for the apps that I knew where compatible with ARM and this device. Anyone wondering I used this https://store.rg-adguard.net/ you just need to copy the URL from the windows store and it gives you the files.
First I tried downloading only the appx files and ran them on windows app boss, install, enable sideload, add package, the same recource.pri error appear, I tought maybe I need all the other files that were on the page meant for arm so I tried adding them as dependencies in windows app boss, added libraries to dependencies, and the other file that was a .blockmap I added to provisioned custom data, still nothing but closer, this time it only told the that the appxmanifest.xml was not on the package root whatever that mean, although I went to the windowsapps folder and the folder for the game in question and the file were there, but I noticed it was in the same path but in a different folder, with this I mean that I add 2 separate programs folders with 2 separate windowsapps folders, ok maybe windows apps boss created this one I thought, so I just moved them to the official folder and tried again, still nothing. Can it be because the original windowsapps folder is hidden? (just thought of this)
At this point I just want to flinch this thing at a wall or into a volcano, because every problem I fix just leads to another one, but since I got it for 50 bucks (I knew what I was getting into), and since now use it as my main pc since I don't have anything else or will have in a later future (its not that bad I just use mainly to watch movies, series now that I have the torrents desktop app, its relatively fast and works really well for basic stuff apart from the fact that Microsoft completely ruin the devices potential),I would like to at least be able to install metro apps or in this case games.
Can please someone help me out in figuring this, or guiding me another way to install them since every information in the internet is scattered and not always compatible with this device?
