Hello all,
I've never modded my Kindle Fire but I'd like to dive in. I'd like to hear your opinions of the best (fast, functional) rom available for the device AND the best step by step process to load it. Really excited to make this thing usable.
Thanks!
Please don't answer all at once... slow down everyone.
I'm using the newest resurrection remix with twrp 2.0.8.7 and it's working well for me. There are several tutorials for rooting and installing twrp in your device, use one of them. Then install what ever rom you want. Make sure you do a clean install of the rom you choose. This is explained in the tutorials as well.

When I connect my USB cable to my computer, what causes the kindle fire to automatically mount the /sdcard as the mass storage device?
I would rather it not auto mount and instead wait for me to tell it to mount for PC usage.
Is this controlled by the Kernel? I have the stock 6.3 OS, rooted, with the stock Kernel.
This is just something it does. You can always click disconnect . With custom ROMS it dosent do that, at least not the ROMS I tested out. You could always install a custom rom .

Then how did the person who made the custom ROM get it to stop doing that?
I disagree. This isn't just something that it does. If you click disconnect without safely removing from your system the FAT32 file system will eat itself. It is a pain in the ass to have to disconnect it from the computer, then hit disconnect on the screen when all I want is to charge my phone or use ADB to check something.
It could be the kernel. It could be something as simple as a config file or an APK that needs to be disabled. I've looked around but I can't find it. It makes me think it is in the kernel or maybe in the framework?
Because custom ROMS have different kernels than stock, sir. This is just something that the Amazon kindle fire does. If you have a problem with this, you can go on a rampage deleting system files and settings, send a report to Amazon themselves, or flash a custom rom other than MoDaCo, add it uses stock UI

your right is how the stock amazon set up is.. dude its an ereader if you want it to be like a tablet than flash a CM rom. and you shouldn't be charging it from usb it dosent have enough amps to charge it thats why they give you a house charger.
I rooted my KF. Already removed all the Amazon stuff and went to ICS, now I'm with a JB rom, but there's a lot of problems, one of them it's the charging (It's not easy to charge), requires some tricks.
I bought this KF to give to my girlfriend on her birthday. It will be not mine.
So, I'm thinking, should I use Cyanogenmod 7 and stays on 2.3.7 or should I give to her on JB? If I install 2.3.7 what will I lose? I mean on functions?
Thanks

You can dual boot kindle. I think the only way to watch Prime Videos is to use stock rom. So you can have stock as alternative and some other ROM as basic.

If it isn't yours, you should've left it alone but, we've already come this far, so let's make the most of it. In my opinion, I'd use JB, only because of the features you get (And the bragging power.) As far as I know, the charging problem is universal on all the ROMS (Somebody correct me if there is one I havn't tried yet.) The feature you lose from not having stock are; No access to the Prime Videos, or download the videos from the device you bought on the stock ROM. (Pisses me off, I bought like 5 movies and can't even get 'em on) 2. You can't use the Kindle Lending Library. 3. You are gonna have a less stable OS, to begin with. But, there are some advantages, having google frameworks, and maps api, nativly in your OS. The ability to Overclock, within the OS settings. The developing tools, the list just goes on. (CM in general.) If I were you, I'd use CM9 or CM10. If your GF won't need some of the advance feature, then I'd use stock. If she just would want it to read or watch videos, I'd use Stock. It all depends on her needs/wants in the end.
EDIT:
I wouldn't suggest using the Dual-Booting bootloader, it's pretty complex. Also, only some ROMS can be used with it (If I remember correctly).
Thank you for the opinions guys. I will stick with the JB, the only problem I see right now it's the charging one. Hope there's a fix soon.
what about flashing it back to stock?
If I revert to the stock rom it will charge normally?
Thanks

Yes.
If you want a stock rom I use Gr9. It's basically stock firmware with Google Play installed. It's also rooted so to watch Prime Video you have to install OTA Root Keeper and temporary unroot it.

Back to stock
If its not yours and you dont wont to be constantly fixing every little issue it has...take it back to stock.I rooted and flash a custom rom for my daughters phone and every time it has an issue its my fault
Why not just install MoDaCo ROM for an easy to use, rooted, Fire interface with Play store preinstalled?
For a pure Android ROM, ICS is the best balance between features and stability
My apologies in advance if I am asking this questions again. I swear to you I have been reading and rereading these forums for days, searching then and the internet and either I'm too ignorant to realize that I've read the answer or I just didn't ask the right search questions. I will gladly accept any criticism you may wish to dish out for my repetition.
I have rooted my Kindle Fire 8.9 running software version 8.3.1 using the method posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1996873 . I also used the Pro version of KindleFree. Both ran with only minor issues, I'm sure it was something I did wrong, but it works now and here we are.
FYI: I do not have Android SDK installed on my computer.
I will not be doing anything more on my Kindle than what I can do now: Download apps from Google store, use the Go Launcher to access my stuff. Occasionally use ES explorer to do whatever. I am not going to flash a custom rom or do anything more creative than that. I'm just not that brave. It took me a month and a shot of bourbon to get up enough nerve to perform the root.
Based on the above statement (and my limited computer knowledge) is it really safe and practicable to put the power of KFFA, TWRP and a 2nd bootloader in my hands?

1. You've pretty much outlined a good path for using your KF HD 8.9. :good::good:
2. Sounds like you have your apps from Play, and have loaded another launcher (I mostly use "Nova" these days, not a fan of "Go") whenever I tire of the Amazon interface, so it sounds like your KFHD is basically setup or optimized for you! Love the idea of the 3G -you can surf and read email and have no strings for most web stuff as well!
3. You could continue to "play/fiddle" with your KFHD 8.9, but really, did you get it to spend your time tweaking and fiddling with it, or to have a great tablet that delivers content -all the possible content-- to you in an appealing and reliable tablet? You are set right now! :good:
4. OK, what are you missing without TWRP?
-- Well TWRP will make ROM flashing very easily and very quick.
-- Also TWRP adds the option to do a system-level backup of your current configuration (nandroid backups). This is an image of your complete KFHD 8.9; and, after doing this backup, you have a great recovery tool if/when you tinker and destroy your setup. It is relatively easy to restore with a nandroid backup!
5. Are those features essential? . . . NO! :cyclops:
-- Switching to a custom rom provides little extra capability to your rooted KFHD 8.9. In some cases, you actually lose the capability to use things like Amazon Instant Video, or Amazon book loans/borrowing, and some other unique amazon features.
- You can restore your KFHD 8.9 by doing a "normal" reset, or even by going into download mode and resetting that way as well if necessary. Without TWRP, you may have to re-rooting and oversee the reloading of some programs like Play, but it is a very viable alternative to the TWRP approach. (Especially if doing these kinds of mods are not "fun"/"interesting" in and of themselves!)
6. So, in my book, based on what you've said, you have done exactly what you needed to do. Go make a Titanium Backup of your setup and forget about modifications for while and enjoy a very nice machine!
OH DON'T FORGET TO TURN OFF OTA UPDATING OR YOU WILL LOSE ROOT
This is an important consideration --please don't forget that action!
Good Luck!

Thank you so much for your quick response. I think I'm going to stay right where I am based on your response and my programming knowledge and comfort zone. KindleFree has the option to turn of OTA updating and it seems to be working. Each time an app needs updating I get a notification and I can select the app and update it or remove notification. Time will tell if Kindle will honor that setting.

Great! Thank you for the kind words! Happy if I can help by sharing :good::good:
I think you will be happier using your KF HD 8.9" than simply just tinkering with it.
I often get into a "Kindle adjustment mood" and search out what is new and try it out to see if it works for me. However, once I get my KFTT setup the way like it then, I sometimes forget to go to XDA for days, maybe weeks, because I am too busy USING the Kindle to worry about TINKERING with it!
(But, I always come back looking for the "next, best modification"
KindleFree is good (I have the paid version as well). It does the ota disable, so does Prokennexusa's (free) Kindle Fire Firstaide kit, too (in the General KFHD section!).
That said, however, I also have manually gone into "System/etc/security" directory and renamed the file "otacerts.zip" to something completely different as an added step to protect my OTA from un-rooting in an Amazon attack! :cyclops: (I am running Kinology right now and I think the rom has disabled OTA, still I feel safer if I can tweak it myself as well
Good Luck!
As the title says, I am running gedeROM 1.55 for the past year, since I experimented with a couple ROM's and settled on this one. For the most part its been a decent daily driver but have found it a little 'sluggish' lately and it annoys me. The lack of deep sleep keeps me always scrambling to keep it charged and ready to go so I don't find it dead when I want to use it.
Of course in the process I am using an older version of FFF and TWRP, so I know an update of them would be necessary.
A couple questions, looking for opinions:
1. Is it possible to just use KFU and update FFF and TWRP without disturbing everything else? I'd like to get them up to date.
2. After reading for 2 hours or more I am unclear on the limitations of 10.1 JB and wonder if I should be changing to JB at all?
3. Are the 10.1 ROM's a better option than I am running for speed and reliability? If so, any shining star amongst them?
I know asking for opinions will bore most people to death reading this, but I need some guidance from those that have been active and keeping up with ROM dev on this unit while I left mine alone and got behind.
Thanks in advance.
This might help you:
1. Look on the first post of this thread. Theres a flashable zip for FFF1.4 (Just flash in TWRP)
2. Here is Ichigo's flashable zip for TWRP 2.5.0 (Just flash in TWRP) https://www.dropbox.com/s/b4idirzkmgvnm07/TWRP-Blaze-2.5.0.0.zip
Those will not disturb anything else.
And try This ROM first and see if you like 4.2.2. This is the OFFICIAL cyanogenmod 10.1. To me its by far the best in terms of stability and speed. Make sure you wipe everything BUT /sdcard in TWRP before you flash!
Moving to a recent JB ROM will be a good move compared to gede because not only will you have better battery life but you'll have almost another year of improvements made to the Kindle since then.
Thanks for the info.... I'm gonna give this a shot I think. Not much to lose, nothing mission-critical on my tablet anyway
I'll post back once it's done!
Thanks again.

It seems to have gone well, thanks for all the info. Updated FFF, TWRP, and now on CM 10.1 ... I did the 5/20 nightly, wasn't sure which one to do -- seems pretty bug free at this point.
Hey guys, just thought I'd try and revive my Kindle Fire. I've had roms on my Kindle Fire since I bought it when it came out (never even used stock Kindle). We all know the KF is dated now, and I've had kitkat and also lollipop on it but it just seems too slow to really use lollipop or kitkat. Constant redraws and the device just hangs for a few seconds before apps start up
I'd like to see what everyone else's ideas are as far as revitalizing this device even if it means going back to an older version of android or using specific roms. Thoughts?
