Nexus 5X overheating often - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know why is my Nexus 5X overheating when using it normally?
Whatever I do the phone always gets too hot around the fingerprint sensor, it doesn't matter if I'm browsing the internet or playing any game it just gets hot.
I recently bought the phone and I'm not sure if it's a hardware problem or software since I'm on Android N (DP4).

I wasn't able to find a similar thread. Do you mind giving me the link?

But i dont want to heat up my device more then i does itself, im having a problem when device by itself get unusually hot and i need to know how to stop that from happening, Im also using 100% stock rom so i dont have root.

Is your phone shutting down? The phone would shut down if it is over heating.

[Q] How hot does your nexus run?

So I'm running a custom kernel with lowered voltages... even over wifi this thing runs hot. After about 15 minutes The screen emulates heat don't even have to touch it to feel it. Even underclocked its still running warm. Coming from a single core you would think having another core would reduce some heat but my epic never got this hot at all. So how hot does your nexus run? If I would guestamate I would say around 100° or so. The brightness isn't that high however my rgb values are pretty high at least the blue value is. I like a cool screen temp.

go back to stock kernel, you can undervolt/underclock the stock one too!
I run around 119°F at the hottest I've seen, regularly. So you're fine.

Mine is 118°F/48°C right now. Pretty normal for browsing on wifi and texting and the odd YouTube video.

Guys specify your settings, otherwise it makes no sense...
Mine is at 56°C max...OK...AND...HOT...
And HOT...what does that mean hot (for Mach3.2)....
Here's my settings:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25618966&postcount=388
Idle:22°C
Normal use (mean settings/apps):about 37-42°C
Browsing:about 45-57°C
Benchmarks:abou 68-80°C
Use System Tuner on the Play Store to look at you CPU temp...
With my settings,I insist,take a good look.
As for the threads on battery life/best kernel/best ROM/best time-on screen/best settings/best HTC one X killer/best....
There is redondant threads here, the worst is... with little info...

Wifi on, surfing webpages on Chrome Beta for maybe 15 to 20 minutes, then the casing gets pretty hot.
I'm sure it's high 40+ degrees Celsius or maybe 50+
Sorry for not including details
All units are in degree Celsius.
Idles at 32
Normal use not sure, but should be around 30+ range
It only runs that hot when really pushing the phone hard for me.
Don't forget ambient temperature makes a big difference also. And case trapping heat.
...of the people, by the people, for the people...
So I downloaded b35 of aokp. Wiped data... and dalvik. Formatted the system and now its cool as ice. I'm on the charger running at 1.2 and its not getting warm. Before I was @ 900mhz and it was getting really warm... I'm amazed at what corrupt data will do.

Yeah all devices do get heated up while charging but while wifi + charging / flashing ramps up my phone temp to 45C !!
iv'e actually got it imported from USA & here in india we don't have support for nexus.
i'm out of luck , waiting for a workaround or any advices
I'd play with the radio first. If the reception is crap the phone will boost power to the radio, get hotter, and use more battery. Since radios can be very network and region dependent it's worth experimenting.
Since you have no warranty and your phone isn't working right you have nothing to loose by unlocking and flashing a new radio.

My Gnex and my sis's GS2 also heats up to a minimum 40+ degrees.
Damn... Idk what you guys are doing... my battery temp is always 38 degrees celsius and my CPU temp is around 51 degrees celsius and I've never not had my phone feel cool to the touch unless I'm tethering or playing a graphically intensive game.

[Q] Ascend P6 Overheating

Does anyone of you has problems with overheating when playing games or its just me? I tried with B102, B118 and B122. All of them had the same problem. I think that the thing that it is so thin makes it heat much.
Mine overheats as well, but I don't play games though. It happens with heavy usage, which is quite often for me.
Sent from my HUAWEI P6
Mine gets hot but I wouldn't call it over heating as it doesn't crash. Overheating implies too much heat causing problems with its function.
This phone does overheat and may cause malfunction on GPS. GPS may failed until you shutdown your phone and keep it cool a while.

I use b122 and skype. Just a small warmth. Nothing major.
If the phone is heating too quick even over basic stuff like moving over the home screen, then do a factory reset.

I don't think it will: I'm running 4.4 on a Nexus7 and performance is quite similar to 4.3. I haven't run any synthetic benchmarks but I don't feel any considerable improvement over 4.3. Unless Huawei includes some optimizations of their own, I don't think you'll notice much difference on 4.4.

Then let's hope for some optimizations from HUAWEI. The easily overheating must be solved.

[q] no 3d game on g4!

I tried many tweaks found in the forum to reduce lag, lower heat but my G4 still keeps crashing while playing 3D games. Is it hardware problem, lollipop 5.1 problem or I got a defect phone? Am I the only one experience this?

Same here, vs986 if it matters.
Not sure what's happening because if it was widespread we'd be hearing about it in every blog.
Mortal Kombat X won't load without wiping data and praying. Others crash on start but will normal run next launch.
I sent WB Games a logcat but I'm starting to think it's the phone.

Crash happens on playing for 5 to 10 mins, becoz cpu or gpu get too hot? I'm not sure...
@kelvinick, Not for me. It's always crashes right away.
On loading a game I noticed the phone immediately starts logging something having to do with the "thermal engine", changes the "wlchg_monitor" alarm to 42c, and the "LCD_management" alarm to 44c.

Do you have a case on the phone? I've had devices in the past that would overheat with heavy use in thick cases.

Hmm well no problems here. If it's happening in more than one game I'd lean towards a defective phone.
First I'd try a factory reset before returning the phone.

Oneplus 3 overheating?

Hi guys, Im very concerned about in the last week I felt the phone gets constantly hot, especially when using wi fi or fat and I've noticed it gets very hot when using walking dead no mans land game connected to wi fi, and even when browsing.
Previously I've used the phone with heavy multitasking and gaming and never had this issue.
Even when charging now I felt the phone get unusually hot.
Before I've notice this heating issue I've flashed and tested a lot of roms, and finally back to OrionOS 2.6.1, this is my actual rom.
I'm with phone for two months and neves had this issue
Any idea of a possible cause and solution???
I'm very concerned because I know the effect of the heating on battery life and overall performance.
I've upload some screenshots of the normal temperature of the phone with gaming or extense browsing.
PD: when I've noticed the heating issue I've flashed a lot of roms to see if is a rom related issue but same issue with all roma even with stock Oxygen and stock kernel.

Yes, my previous phone s6 edge used to work over 50+ mostly of time and nubia z9 even hotter temperatures but OP3 with almost two months of use never used to pass over 40 with about 10 different roms I've used.. That's why I'm concerned now, but maybe it's most a subjective feeling of temperature.

Thanks for your quick response, Ill try flashing new modem.. I've read in other posts about some overheating issues related to network searching, so I've turn off network,, enter airplane mode, but with wi fi heating persists, i suspect it's something wi fi related.

Dont know what you call overheating. The phone wont overheat due the thermal throttle. I would start complaining when your battery reaches 45+ (not when charging and using) and your CPU +75. But believe me it wont come that high!
40° is nothing to worry about,
And, gaming,
Of course it get hot when doing gaming...
