[Review] Choetech 50w QC3 6 port charger - HTC 10 Accessories

Hi All,
I know there is a review for the 55w usb c charger, but here is mine of the 50w 6 port QC 3 Charger (Model Q3-4U2Q). Just to note this was sent to me to review, however this is all my own opinions.
The item is very nicely built, it has a soft rubber texture and feels very well built.
In the box you get the charger itself, a UK 3 pin power lead as well as a USB C cable and a little stand with a rubber base to keep it in place.
The charger itself has 2 QC3 ports (in blue) and 3 normal ports.
Using my usb voltage/battery meter, the QC 3 Ports draw 8.9v and 1.5a using the supplied usb c cable. On the HTC 10 the phone recognises this and shows as “charging rapidly” (very big plus point as not all QC3 chargers do this). For speeds it has charger 100maH of power over 3 minutes, works out about 5% battery on the phone itself. Total charge time is just over an hour.
The normal ports draw 5v over 1.4a, this takes the charging down to about 50mah over 3 mins, which the phone shows as about 2/3% battery. This takes the overall charging time to just over 2 hours.
I then kept the htc 10 plugged into the qc3 port and plugged in other phones into the normal ports to see how many you can charge at the same time.
1) First phone (htc m7) = no difference to charging rate of the htc 10.
2) Second phone (htc 8x) = v remained at 8.9v but amps just dropped down a tiny fraction to 1.46a (did jump around more)
3) Third phone – (htc desire hd) = voltage moving between 8.89v and 8.9v, amp jumping between 1.4a and 1.5a.
4) Fourth phone – (Samsung non smart phone) = voltage down to 8.89v solid and amps still jumping.
5) Last phone (asus tablet) = voltage down to 8.89v solid and amps still jumping from around 1.2a to 1.4a
So I now have 5 phones and 1 tablet plugged in charging into the port. The HTC 10 is still “charging rapidly” only drawing 0.1v less than on its own. In terms of charging speed it has dropped from 100ma every 3 mins to around 50mah every 3 mins (i.e. halved). Unplugging phones the jump point did tend to be around 3/4phones until it actually made a noticeable difference to charging speeds.
During this whole process the charging did not get noticeable hot, it warmed up a little a top but nothing major enough to cause any issues.
For ref - The test took around 30 minutes, the usb voltage meter reads 750maH drawn (including unplugged and putting in non qc3 ports and having all 6 phones plugged in) and the phone has gone from 39% to 82% = 43% jump hike.
Note – The charger does have a small blue led on the front when plugged in, it’s not very bright to light up a dark room but might distract some people if they want to place it close while in bed.
Overall I would give this a good 5/5 stars. Great build quality, the actually does take full advantage of the QC 3 capabilities. It also can charge multiple devices without making too much of an impact on charge speed’s (unless you use all 6 ports). My only downside is the LED light which is just personal preference, can easily be covered up with a tiny bit of black tape.

Phone charging and Satnav...is this normal?

Just been on a long run and used the satnav ( google ), and the whole time it was plugged into the cigarette lighter charger.
Despite this, the battery level was running down
Is this normal - that the battery drain using the satnav/gps is greater than the charging rate?
I used mine yesterday for about a 1/2 hr journey, was not plugged in, but batterey was down to about 30%, also seemd to use about 20mb for 15 miles, so watch your usage.

Its been discussed already, your charger is not powerful enough to charge it when using satnav, so the end result is that your charger is just slowing down the discharge. Happens when you are using 3rd party accessories.
Ah - That makes sense -- where can I get a decent one - at a decent price
I'm using the factory supplied lead and still get the same, also used to be a problem with my Touch Diamond 2 WinMo Phone, was hoping Desire would be better and it is... just... If I make sure it is fully charged before I set off I can do about 3 hours with it plugged in before it goes flat, I just keep switching it off while I know where I'm going and only switching it on when I don't! That way you can make it last until it is needed.
Another thing to check is that it is kept cool enough to charge, again, in common with my older HTC winmo phone, the Desire gets very hot while being used for GPS and this can be worse if it is in sunlight on your windscreen, sometimes this can stop it charging at all, (you can tell its in this state because the indicator light blinks alternately orange and green) I angle a vent so its blowing cold air on the phone and that seems to do the trick.
Weird thing with the Desire is that for me it shows the green charge light and battery full indicator right up till it is nearly dead... rather than showing that it is draining
I've also noticed with the Desire that even If I'm just browsing the web it drains quicker than it can charge, even using mains charger, I often get a message "the current is insufficient, please connect to AC" or something like that (when it is already plugged in)
I don't think the in car charger you use would make a big difference, the current/voltage for your cigarette lighter socket is limited by the vehicle electrics (I know mine is fused at 15 amps)

You need a charger which supplies 1A. Most 12v cigarette lighter chargers only supply 500mA

Are you using Bruts worldwide maps mod? I just installed it. I ran it for literally only 5 minutes, but my phone got really hot and the battery monitor shows the app used 10% of the charge (the phone has been unplugged for 24 hours). I have a strong suspicion that this app is faulty.

Basically most usb car chargers (even 1a rated ones) are recognised by your phone as a data connection and to protet delicate computer usb circuits will only draw 500mAh where your phone requires 950mAh.
An easy mod of either the charger or a data cable will solve the problem. Your charger MUST be able to supply up to 1a.

Thats why I use the Belkin one, it detects it as a charger only and charges at full rate when plugged into the 1A socket.

Slow Charging

I am travelling at the moment overseas (for work). At home my 10.1 usually charges every night in a docking station. I bought a spare lead and my trusty multi pined (world Wide) USB charger that I use for my phone etc when I travel. When I plug the Pad into the charger it only charges at about 5% per hour so from dead flat it takes a whole day. At home its recharged in a few hours. What gives?? The charger is plenty big enough and doesn't even get warm. I tried a different charger (Not a Samsung Charger) and I get the same charge rate. Any body know if there is something special about the charger and if so how can I get around this problem in the short term.
Next time Ill just bring the Samsung charger

You need a 2 amp charger. Most normal USB chargers are only 0.5 amps.
DanielNTX is right. Our toy has a 7000mAh Battery. The normal charger provides us with 2A per hour which - by using maths - makes the tab charge from 0-100 in about 3.5 hours (slightly more as you have to calculate efficiency loss and also the tab uses power during that time (Wifi, 3G, whatever's turned on)
Phone chargers usualy only deliver 500mA (or 0.5A) per hour, some more (The Blackberry charger provides 700mA for instance). Depending on how much Amp your phone charger provides, it can take longer, in the case of a 500mA charger it takes 4 times as long. (14 hours+).
It is really hard to find a good wallcharger that provides 2A that is not either flimsy as hell or pricy. HP had a firesale a few days ago where they sold their Touchpad charger (5.3V, 2A) for a cheap 5€ (including shipping) unfortunatelly my order got cancelled due to the high demand, but you should definatelly search for a charger with a higher amperage.
Yes yoar are correct the Charger I am using although physically large is only one amp.

When you are charging, is there a red cross through the battery symbol in the bottom right of the screen?
If so, then the problem is that your charger does not signal to the tab that it is a charger and so the tab will only trickle charge (as it would from a regular USB port).
The solution is:
a) to buy a tab compatible charger which sends this signal
b) buy an adapter to send the signal, search for somethig like "Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 New PC Charging Power USB Cable Adaptor" on eBay
c) if you have electronics skills make up a little circuit to fool the tab. It involves soldering a couple of surface mount resistors between the +5, D+, D- & 0v. Several pages around on it. I can't find my original wallcharger anymore
I use the original usb-cable and the charge unit from my SIII but it's slow as hell. And when the tab is on most of the time there is a red cross on the battery. It's very sucky
Just go find any old wallcharger that provides 2 Amps then. I bought a second original charger off of amazon for "just" 15€. It's not the cheapest I could find, but easily the one I trust most not to burst up in flames
I would recommend staying away from cheap, flimsy adapters.

EDIT: I suspect the SIII charger does not output 2A, really. Such a poweradapter is very uncommon for phones (I have not seen one with such an amperage yet) and only common for "high power devices".
EDIT2: If it is this one you have (http://www.amazon.de/Samsung-ETA0U8...D2LC/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1345112597&sr=8-4), then yes, this does not provide enough power for the Galaxy Tab. This has an output of only 1A.

Buying a 2A charger won't do because the tab is limiting the current it draws from the charger unless it detects the original charger. This is to comply with the USB standard maximum current of 0.5A. If the tab drew more current from a standard charger, chances are good that the charger either shuts off due to overload or simply goes defect.
To use a 2A standard charger using the full current, you need to buy/build an adaptor cable to fool the tab into thinking it's hooked up to the original charger.

slow charging WITH samsung charger?
I've been using the samsung wall charger from the box with my galaxy tab 10.1 and a few days ago it started to only trickle charge when plugged in with it. It charges like 3-5% per hour, and says its "discharging" in the battery menu while its plugged in. Thing is, the charger I have is frayed a bit at the male-to-tab (not male-to-block) side of the cord. Could this be causing my problem? I don't want to buy another charger for no reason, but I also don't want to send in my tab for weeks on end to find out it was the charger...any advice?

Solar charger for Samsung Galaxy Note-II

I'm looking for portable (camping/hiking type) solar charger for Samsung Note 2 (T-Mobile version). Just bought GOAL ZERO Nomad 7+ Guide-I/O Plus (which is AA/AAA battery bank. When I plugged in my Note into the solar panel instead of charging it was draining battery, so after 2 hour I wen from 35% down to 19%. I did testing on the battery bank (from USB to micro-USB on the phone and it works fine). So my question is:
1) is it possible that the panel is defective or Note2 is simply so incompatybile with the whole world ?
2) is there any other nice solar kit that would work and at the same time is small and light enough.
This is also possible because Note-2 (as well as Galaxy-3) uses 11 pin instead 5-pin USB pinout...
Eventually I would like to charge also my Samsung SLATE-7. I plugged it to the panel through the lighter outlet (as I have an extra charger that takes the power from the lighter then converts it to the higher voltage/amps - I believe is is around 19-20V). The only problem is that (as I herd) charging this way would be pretty slow. I have spent several hours last two days trying to find something that would work but after my several bad experiences with Samsung I have to be 100% sure when I order something on line. In this case I was lucky as I bought Nomad-7 at REI store so I can easily return it. I've seen several nice chargers on line today but at this moment I cannot be sure that anyone of them would work.
Any advice appreciated.
The note 2 requires at least a 1 amp output JUST to run while you're using the device (ie screen on)... It will charge slowly at 1 amp with the screen off and the phone not in use.
1.5 amps is recommended minimum to charge while you're actually using the device...
2 amps is the stock wall charger...
USB 2.0 output is only 500mA... Which is enough to trickle charge the note 2 while not in use.
So basically... look for a Solar charger that has at least 5v 1amp (if not 2amps) USB output. That should charge it. Or it my opinion? Invest in a 11,000mah + External usb battery and separate Solar panel kit. Most solar kits come with dinky 4000mah or less battery packs which is barely enough to charge your phone once. (if that)

Slow charging + some confusion about charging

My htc one x charger took 4-5 hours for fully charge ( its so so slow. i m a sammy user from long time. sammy phone normally tooks 2 to 2.5 hours for fully recharge battery).i feel it is even slowr then computer USB charging
Now the second part of the story. i also have Note 2 charger. when i charge my htc one x from my note 2 charger then hox tooks only 2 to 2.5 hours for full charge. i think this awkward situation is because of difference specs of chargers.

Mine says made in china too. I boutgh an hox first hand but think its second hand because this came with the bootloader u locked and with w custom rom.
Anyway. Mine takes 2.5 hours for full charge while off. With the phone on it takes less time.

I haven't chked the timing yet but the current widget shows 1000 ma while charging my note 1 nd hox shows around 650~700.also noticed that if u drain ur phone charging takes way more nd messes the batt percentage , so my advice is always reconnect when batt is under 5%
another diff I noticed is that note shows 0 ma if disconnected nd 3.6~4.18 volt usage but hox shows around 165~350 v,I was under the impression ma only shows charging

Basic Lesson is USB power status (valid for USB 2.0)
Normal USB power will give up to 120mA at 5v to any device (HOX 1800hmA battery at 120mhA... thats 15 hours from 0%, not cool)
Now most devices that depend on USB for charging can negotiate high power mode post handshake and receive up to 550mhA at 5 volt from a PC usb port (can be capped on laptops and HTPC´s), note that this is per HUB, not per port, meaning that if you have your HOX hooked up to a PC and you have another high power device like a wifi adapter or a portable hard drive, charging will be a lot slower, that is why when using computer USB ports i recommend buying a external USB hub with a separate power supply, most PC´s have 2-3 wired USB ports which are hubbed internally and another 1-2 ports which can be activated connecting an external header.
As for usb chargers, most devices wont charge above 550mhA (3.5 hours to charge the hox from 0%) but i´ve seen devices go up to 750-800mA, i would usually recommend getting a good one, you can get a decent one off deal extreme for like 2-3 bucks, but investing in a good charger thats able to give 700-1000mA per port and also gives you peace of mind that it wont fry your devices if there's a spike is a good long term investment,
Personaly ? we had 2-3 galaxy S devices at home and i still use the charger for my HOX, 2-3 hours and its charged, and it seems they cost like 5 bucks on amazon.

Build Quality
It’s made of plastic but of a very good build. It has a two tone look of glossy black ends with the rest being a matte black. It’s seemless from the transition from the glossy to matte. There doesn’t seem to be any gaps between the pieces. All ports are at on end. It has a ring indicators with 10 “pies”. Each pie represents 10% charge of the battery pack. It’s a nice soft white light and not too birght that a lot of electronics suffer from.
It just has one Anker logo at the top and very minimalistic.
Testing/Performance
It has a Shake feature to activate charging. Simply plug in a device and give it a quick shake and the device and start charging. Now I know what you’re thinking; leaving it in your bag will discharge the battery for no reason if nothing is plugged in. That isn’t true, it has a super smart super low discharge even when left in a bag where accidental shakes will happen.
I decided to test this out. Leaving it my baby nieces rocker, it didn’t even discharge 1 pie (10%) when left over 18 hours in the rocker.
Using the following devices:
Nexus 5
Nexus 7 2013
S3
Ipad 4
Ipad 2
Sansa Clip Zip Mp3 player
All were able to be charged without a hitch. It is to note that the max output is 3 amps. So trying to charge two devices that require 2.1 amps is simply not possible at full speed. It would charge t but at a slow rate. It can charge a 2.1 and 1 amp device without a hiccup though.
Either port would be fine for any smartphone under the sun.
Using a Nexus 5 at 26%:
30 mins – 55%
1h 13 mins – 91%
1h 28 mins – 100%
It used 3 pies (30%) to go from 26% to 100%.
Conclusion
It’s a great battery pack that has a nice shake feature! One of the better sized battery packs that has a good capacity compared to its size. A must have all tech warriors on the go.

This is a great device. I have the 13Ah charger, and it seriously holds a charge. I've never gotten it empty before because it'll charge my phone for a week. Looking forward to the next time I fly so I can use it.
Any chance you could actually test the output with a 12w ipad? I just got a new anker astro3, and it only charger at 2.1, not a 2.4amp
Easiest way to test it is to download "batterylife"(free) in cydia, or time charging the default charger compared to the anker.
