I have zenfone 2 with a cn recovery on it but says it has a ww build. I keep getting a pop up permission, which is really irrating. If I want to put a development rom on my phone do I have to change the recovery first(cn to ww)? What is the procedure I need to go through to get this phone working properly? I've read the cn to ww threads but the links to builds are old. Which ww build do I start process of changing the cn to ww recovery?
Where do I start...?
Any help would be welcomed

I also have a CN version, however I updated my phone to the most recent Chinese Version ( 2.20.40.185) and now whenever I try to execute step Write adb sideload file.zip I get error: protocol fault (no status). However the version I tried it with is not more recent thatn 2.20.40.185 do I have to wait for a new update in order for it to work?

Did you enable developer mode in settings and tick USB debugging?
If not you go to settings>about, find build number in about and click on it until you see developer mode enabled. Go back up one level in settings and you'll see developer settings, turn on and tick box for USB Debugging.
Then go back to and try adb sideload again.
If you want root then the best idea is to go to Shakalaka's pre-rooted rom thread in Android developement and download the version you want, I believe he has 2.20.40.184WW there now, then use fastboot to replace the boot, droidboot, recovery and finally system files. Be VERY careful about copy and paste as there have been people who brick their devices due to overwriting the same partition with all the above files.
To Change CN to WW - Use Fastboot Flashtools
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash fastboot droidboot.img
fastboot flash system system.img

After many many tries i found a way to convert my CUCC edition to WW.
This way should work for any Edition.
1.) Install ADB & USB Drivers
2.) Download recovery image (version should be smaller or equal to desired rom)
3.) Boot to fastboot mode (Power + Vol Up)
4.1) flash fastboot.img from original desired rom zip (fastboot flash fastboot fastboot.img)
4.2) flash recovery image (fastboot flash recovery xyz.img)
5.) reboot to fastboot again
6.) launch recovery from fastboot
7.) upload firmware (adb sideload xyz.zip)
8.) wipe cache
9.) reboot
Your phone should now have the desired ROM & SKU (even future OTA updates should work)

from android mode you can simply boot to fastboot by issuing following command: "adb reboot fastboot"
or to recovery: "adb reboot recovery"
and it should not matter which version you convert to which version as long as you choose the right fastboot and recovery image (the edition you want to have as a result)
doesn't work with CUCC firmware
I tried this method. My fimware is ASUS_T00G_CUCC_user_1.17.40.17_20140812_9510.
At step adb sideoad : Error : "E:signature verification failed. Installation aborted. Can't open /tap/update-script.log. E:Cannot load volume /sisc!"
I used these : 1.17.40.16_ww_recovery.img and UL_ASUS_T00G_WW_1_18_40_11.zip.
Any idea please ?

thank you for your post.
i have manage to update from cucc to ww
your procedure is definitely correct.
on your 4.1 procedure is got mistaken command
4.1) flash fastboot.img from original desired rom zip (adb fastboot flash fastboot fastboot.img)'
when you want to flash it. please do (fastboot flash fastboot fastboot.img)
for some newbie they dint know that by typing adb fastboot wont be able to flash
and they would thought they have flashed it since there is alot of words coming out from the cmd. but its just adb information.
after this point.
do exactly like above.
you will manage to get it done correctly like i am.
just write it for hope to help newbie on flashing.
Thanks, changed at first post....

Hello friends,
I want to go from CM ROM to ROM STOCK, but I want to keep my root and Philz Touch recovery.
I find it on the web: http://dl4.htc.com/RomCode/Source_and_Binaries/a5dug-3.4.0-g1e44625.zip
which corresponds to the version: 1.56.401.1
But I do not know if I install it via the recovery or another ....
I'm afraid of creating conflict (brick) with the root / customrecovery ...
Did you ever try?
thank you

If that's the RUU for your device the process is simple. All you need to do is rename it to 0P9CIMG.zip and put it on the root/main folder that pops up when you plug it in to your PC. Afterwards boot into recovery and it will automatically detect it. It will ask if you want to proceed choose no.
Before you do the restore you need to relock the bootloader in fastboot mode.
The command is:
fastboot oem lock
Reboot to fastboot and it will say relocked and detect the Stock RUU file. Select yes this time and allow it to proceed.
Do not stop this process even if it seems it froze as this can cause a brick.
You can also use this command after relocking and rebooting to fastboot. At this point on your PC put the RUU file in your ADB folder and run this command:
fastboot flash zip filename.zip
The above command I recommend because after you relock the bootloader CM might not want to boot up or it might try to automatically flash the RUU as soon as you enter the bootloader as I've seen this on some select devices. Try the command first as it works the same, just instead of flashing from your storage its through PC/USB. Kind of like ADB sideload. If you run into any issues you can unlock the bootloader with the same Unlock.bin file, flash a recovery in the bootloader and follow up with the SuperSU.zip through ADB sideload then finally a CM ROM flash through sideload as well.
Once your device boots you could put a Nandroid Backup and try that instead. Yes, you can move each individual file if you don't have a SD card from the internal storage to data/media/clockworkmod/backup. When you get to the last file you copy the folder with it to retain any properties it has and has the same foldername matching the backup files. You'll know what I mean because the storage is only 3.7 GB available and moving the nandroid completely it needs to copy it even using cut. I use ES file explorer for file management. Works great.

I have the same error. Is there any solution to this?.
Greetings.
Hi everyone,
After I receive one notification for update the system the battery was over and the zenfone 2 didn’t boot anymore. I get into fastboot mode but I cannot access the options for recovery mode (factory reset, install from adb,…). I just have a few lines in the end of the screen:
E:file path:/tmp/last_install
… until
E:file path:/sdcard/MODF_SUPDATE.zip
After that I read lots of information from the internet (I’m not an expert in Android) and I figure out that my zenfone have firmware SKU CN. Then after read how to change CN to WW I install Intel USB Driver for Android Devices and I made the fastboot flash (droidboot.img, recovery.img and boot.img) commands to change recovery mode to WW (Z00A.2.20.40.59) and now I need to install the firmware UL-Z00A-WW-2.20.40.59-user.zip. The problem, as I said before, I don’t have access to Recovery Mode Options to, for example, install new firmware using adb (adb sideload UL-Z00A-WW-2.20.40.59-user.zip) command. Now when I make a normal boot it stops after a little bit of “Installing system update” and showing android symbol.
Anyone could HELP, PLEASE?
Thanks
hi,
I got my zenfone 2 in CN firmware. I tried to convert it to ww using this ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/help/how-to-upgrade-cn-version-to-ww-t3101556 ) method. Downloaded the latest UL-Z00A-WW-2.20.40.139-user firmware from asus website. Flashed boot.img recovery.img droidboot.img for 2.20.40.139 from here ( https://mega.co.nz/#F!k4MHiAgL!dVuOKeH3eokcwPSNI79ffw ). Moved "UL-Z00A-WW-2.20.40.139-user.zip" to root folder of memory. Got no system update prompt. Then changed the name to "UL-Z00A-CN-2.20.40.139-user.zip" and rebooted. This time got the prompt. But after automatically tying to flash the firmware, recovery shows error after 20%. Help please !
Edit: also tried to flash through adb sideload. But ADB cant find device in recovery but can find in fastboot mode

redownload the files
Re download, in fsdtboot check that your drivers installed on PC, sometimes adb would not see the phone but would still flash. Just try sideload method with adb, if it errors out it will show you actual reason. My bet is on the sku still being CN. Also try the 93 version of full 1.1 gig WW firmware. It worked well for me.
Thanks everyone ! Turns out the file i downloaded was corrupted. Downloaded the firmware again and worked !
Hi--
I could use some help. I have the rooted stock and installed a new boot animation. Now the phone will not boot. It stays in the boot animation. It does not bootloop. It booted fine prior to the bootanimation.zip replacement. I cannot ADB into the phone to delete the zip but I do have fastboot. Tried to install TWRP to flash a new bootanimation.zip to fix, but TRWP install fails (permission denied). I completed the Asus bootloader unlock to get root.
What can I do?
Thanks--
do you unlock bootloader ?
try to fastboot
use adb command "fastboot flash recovery name.img" to install twrp
Thanks for the reply. I do have a fastboot connection, but it errors when trying to flash recovery:

finished. total time: 0.906s
I know the BL is unlocked as that's how I rooted it an hour before this happened.

Thanks. Couple of questions. Where do I adb sideload from? When the phone is in stock recovery or BL/fastboot screen? I've tried to ADB from BL/fastboot screen and I don't have a connection.
Also--which stock ROM do I use? The WW version as I only see a JP, CN, TW and CUCC versions...no US specific version. WW is the right ROM for US?
Thanks again--

if you wanna do sideload first you need Asus Zf 2 firmware --> http://www.asus.com/Phone/ZenFone_2_ZE551ML/HelpDesk_Download/ download the same firmware installed in your phone (settings-->about phone--> see the build number--> that's your firmware) or you can see it when you on recovery mode (ww=worldwide, so US is ww).
download fastboot_adb (1.0.32) --> https://www.mediafire.com/folder/w70w7r1a65840/Zenfone_2 and the unzip the file, copy/put Asus Zf 2 firmware that you have download into fastboot_adb (1.0.32) folder ( you can rename Asus Zf 2 firmware with "file" name or you can leave it that way)
go to recovery mode--> select apply update --> select apply update from adb
open fastboot_adb(1.0.32) folder --> hold shift + right click --> select open command windows here --> type adb devices
--> type adb sideload file.zip ( or you can just drag Asus Zf 2 firmware ) --> wait till it finish flashing --> when it done reboot
Thanks for all the help here. I was finally able to side load the ASUS ROM and I'm back in business. All due to a bad Boot Animation ZIP!!??!!
I had trouble because adb would not do the push/install anything due to a bug in HTC Sync, which I still had installed from an old phone. Apparently, they have a custom DLL/library that breaks adb. Once I got rid of Sync, I was able to push the ROM a over and was back in business. Thanks again for the help.

Type fastboot devices and it should show your device serial number. As long as that appears you will be able to sideload the latest version

are you on recovery mode? using stock recovery or custom recovery? custom recovery will never work when flashing through adb sideload, i'm flashing latest firmware through sideload just now
Actually i was in system recovery earlier. İ did something. I tried load twrp (teamwin) and i did. It opened but and then i reboot the bootloader and chose recovery but it didn't start recovery it just restarted the bootloader. So i have just fastboot mod now and my computer sees my phone when i type fastboot devices. Can you say one by one what should i do

you should on recovery mode to do sideload, also in my experience i never succeed apply update from adb using teamwin, that's why i always go back to stock recovery if i want to update through adb sideload, but to get stock recovery you have to go back to stock Rom, you need stock Rom and fastboot_adb(1.0.32) ( i already give links to get those files in the comment before) download the stock rom (choose 1 for ex: Z00A_WW_2.20.40.139) unzip that file ectract to Z00A_WW_2.20.40.139, you should have the following files: system.img, boot.img, droidboot.img and recovery.img. connect your phone to pc/laptop, open cmd on Z00A_WW_2.20.40.139 folder by press and hold Shift keyboard key+right click (select open command windows here), In the cmd window enter the following command: “adb reboot bootloader”, Next, in the same cmd window, type the following commands (press enter after each line): “fastboot flash fastboot droidboot.img”; “fastboot flash recovery recovery.img”; “fastboot flash boot boot.img”; “fastboot flash system system.img”. (i will provide you a picture when i'm doing that), when done, still on cmd execute the following commands: “fastboot format userdata” and “fastboot format cache”. up to here it's done you can reboot your phone, if you want to update the simple way just copy firmware file you want to update to internal storage and remove usb cable it will auto detect an update, but if you want to do update using adb sideload after format cache do not reboot phone just go to recovery mode(by pressing vol button twice), select apply update from adb, on pc open fastboot_adb(1.0.32)_071114_r21 folder, put firmware you want to update in this folder (ie : UL-Z00A-WW-2.20.40.168-user), open cmd on fastboot_adb(1.0.32)_071114_r21 folder by press and hold Shift keyboard key+right click (select open command windows here), In the cmd window enter the following command: "adb devices" it should show you devices no and sideload, in the same cmd window, type the following command: "adb sideload file.zip" wait till it done, when it done reboot your phone.
