wifi constant suspend and resume, leading to erratic connection, and battery drain - HTC 10 Guides, News, & Discussion

Update: Sept 28, 2016 - I have uploaded my kernel ZIP for 1.91 US Unlocked variant. This is a stock kernel patched by me to reduce the wifi drain. The patch and the kernel config changes are also attached. Note that these changes are with respect to the stock kernel. So, use stock kernel to build this change. Many kernels floating around here use different kernel config than stock e.g. HZ=100 is standard in HTC stock kernel but its different in many kernels here.

For the poll, to confirm you have this issue: Best is to be stock ROM without root and run the commands in post #4 at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67184793&postcount=4 using 'adb shell'. Also if possible follow the diagnostics in post #135 at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67429554&postcount=135.
If you vote NO, please do provide information (like the output of commands). Please do not attach battery stats or battery usage screenshots.
Update: Jul 23, '16
Attached the Ex 0.10 modified to optimize wlan wakeups. I have restored the DHD OOB wakes to avoid missing some of the async updates over wifi.
Edit: Jul 17, '16
I am attaching the test kernel ZIP (its based on flar2's 0.09 kernel for HTC 10) and the script which you need to run to collect some stats before and after applying the fixed kernel. You can refer to post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67594118&postcount=267 for details on the ZIP and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67595029&postcount=271 for details on the script.

The wifi drains the battery much faster than the LTE, although I have a better signal for the wifi. I see these messages repeated every 1-2 seconds from stock kernel:

There are quite a few problems with the frequent repetition seen above:
1. The connection is unstable. The device is suspending, resuming inside the kernel repeatedly.
2. Its eats up CPU cycles in the kernel
3. It does IO to the disk in terms of /devlog/kernel.log. The log files are rotated inside the 25MB partition (mounted at /devlog) but it results in a very frequent IO to the internal storage, which not only wears out the eMMC but burns through the battery.
If I disable wifi and use LTE only, my standby battery drain is reduced to almost 1/3rd to 1/5th. Something is seriously wrong with the driver for bcm4359 chip on this device.
This issue reported earlier lay credence to this analysis (apart from the main battery drain thread):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-10/help/wifi-weirdness-cause-battery-drain-t3373425
I have tried few things:
1. Legacy DHCP client in developer options - affects only obtaining of the IP. Does not have any effect on the above issue.
2. Locked to 2.4Ghz.
3. Disable power management for wifi.
4. Power off wifi during sleep (instead of "Wifi always on during sleep" setting)
5. Try different routers.
6. Disable IPv6
None of this helps.
The question is why does the kernel driver think that the userspace is waking and suspending the wifi chip repeatedly every second? This is seen in the following:
Code:
...

I was hoping to have a kernel dev take a look and help resolve this issue. Wifi is a real issue for many folks on HTC 10. And many don't even realize that they have a problem because it mostly works, and battery drain can be attributed to other things and won't show in any of the wakelocks.
If any of you is feeling like you have the perfect wifi, post the output of the following from your adb shell, after turning wifi off, on and letting it sit for 30 seconds, and we shall see...
Code:
dmesg|grep "msm_pcie_pm_suspend: RC0: PM_Enter_L23 is received" | head
dmesg|grep "msm_pcie_pm_suspend: RC0: PM_Enter_L23 is received" | tail
dmesg|grep "msm_pcie_pm_suspend: RC0: PM_Enter_L23 is received" | wc
Make sure you run 'adb shell' and then 'su' and then type the commands. And include the output of all commands.
Its a challenge!!

Definitely having worse idle drain on WiFi than LTE.. Any help would be appreciated

On all other phones I have, its the other way: I get better battery with wifi on than LTE on. LTE usage eats battery worse than a stable wifi connection. So, we have a lot of scope on improving battery life on this device. Only if people cooperate. I need that debug to see how many people who think they have perfect wifi and great battery life actually have issues or no issues in the kernel driver.
C'mon, cutting pasting those 3 commands is not going to take a whole of time!! Give me the data. Once I find few people who don't have the kernel level issue, I am going to need their help in resolving this kernel issue for the rest of us.

The drain is not just idle. It eating battery even when the phone is being used because of constant repeated activity of suspending and resuming the wifi device. Sometimes the suspend-resume action is fast enough that you won't even notice that you did not have a connection (the status bar will never show this action that's going on in the kernel driver). Sometimes you will, but you will attribute it to other random factors (router incompatibility is most often heard) and move on.

So we just start an adb shell? then logcat?

You start an adb shell, su and then run the commands above (copy paste them), and post the output. 'su' is needed to be run because it looks like 'dmesg' is only allowed for root users.

OK I did that this morning but I get no output. I am suspicious though about the wifi as the battery drain overnight seems higher than it should be. Maybe the issue is router dependent? I may try again at home tonight...

did you run the commands "after turning wifi off, on and letting it sit for 10 seconds"...may be wait a little longer than 10 seconds.
But the absence of that kernel print with wifi on is a sign that your phone may not be affected by the issue, which is good (for you for sure...) for us because we can find what differences do you have with respect to my system.

Although, you forgot to press enter or forgot to cut&paste the output of last 'wc' command, its OK. I get the gist of your output. You are suffering from poor battery on wifi. If you can afford to switch wifi off and use only mobile data, your battery life will improve. May be try that for couple of days. I have been on data with wifi off with 1 hr SOT in 21 hours off the charger and have lost only 16% of battery so far. I will likely end up with 2-3 days off the charger with 3-4 hour of SOT with this kind of usage (this is my typical usage when I am busy with work and not have much time to play games etc.).
I need volunteers who have a good wifi without this issue to get hold of the problem and fix it. Folks: contribute.

Ok, I've been sent here by @devsk maybe I could be of help because I seem to not be affected by the issue Tell me what I can do to help?

Looks like I also have it on 155.709.5? Could it possibly be because we all used sunshine 3.38 with the kernel bug? viz :

Okay, I'm a noob. I haven't used adb before, so if I can get some more help on the steps to run the commands, I'll do my best.
Here's what I've done so far: install Android SDK tools, enabled Developer Options + USB debugging on my phone, run "adb devices" and I see my phone listed as a "device".
My next thought was to connect to it using "adb connect <deviceid>" and I get: "unable to connect to HT64MBN01322:5555: cannot resolve host 'HT64MBN01322' and port 5555: No such host is known."
My 10 is an unlocked US model.
Help?

@devsk See my attached pic. i suppose i could have just pasted it but here you go. if its showing anything that means i have the wifi bug as well? ive been getting pretty great battery life and i always keep wifi on.... running 1.53 firmware, on viper 1.3.

Used Script Manager included Shell and not Android terminal.
That thing sometimes seems to have problems with multiple lines and copy paste.
The Problem is, if I turn off WiFi I also need to turn off Location search via WiFi. Which makes finding myself on the map take years.
And im now in Manila, 4g coverage is horrible and the 3g net is sooooooo slow ~.~

I thought that kernel bug was only if you were s-off and locked bootloader?

So all we can say so far is that it appears to be an issue with 1.5x firmware?

Have the same problem. Will try to get the data later and post it here

[Q] ROM with Cifs support

I am trying to get the CifsManager App working on my tab3.
It says I need "Your current kernel or rom lacks the necessary CIFS support. Try to find a matching kernel module (cifs.ko) or use a rom with explicit CIFS support."
Can someone point me in the direction of a ROM that supports this please?
I tried placing the cifs.ko module in my system/lib/modules folder but I still can't get it working
Thanks,
Phil

What device ? What Android version ?
You need the module in your boot image for stock, as best as i can tell.
You also need to insmod from .rc in boot.img if you want auto-load.
I am working with a tester to enable cifs in the new KK source for the gt-p5210

I have a P5210 - TAB3 10 Wifi.
I been working this issue for a few days. But since yesterday @moonbutt74 has been helping me. Let me rephrase, I been helping him as a tester. Hi compiled the needed lib's.ko and implemented on a boot.img. Tab do not show it working but I found that in fact the mount operation occurred. We can test this with adb shell. My best guess is that SElinux is preventing us to access the mounted directory. Just my thought. moonbutt74 has ask me to post in here my findings.
I has setup an Ubuntu Machine IP 192.168.3.11 with the Public folder as Share without passwords. So its address is //192.168.3.11/Public.
We are trying to mount the Public folder in the tablet as /mnt/cifs
we are trying to overcome SElinux by setting Selinux Permissive.
Here is the adb communication
Code:
[email protected]:/ # setenforce Permissive
[email protected]:/ # getenforce
Permissive
[email protected]:/ # busybox mount [COLOR="Red"]//192.168.3.11/Public[/COLOR] [COLOR="Blue"]/mnt/cifs[/COLOR] -t cifs -o user=Guess
[email protected]:/ # ls /mnt/cifs
[COLOR="Lime"]openwrt-wrt54gs_v4-squashfs.trx
test[/COLOR]
[email protected]:/ #
openwrt-wrt54gs_v4-squashfs.trx and test are files inside Public Folder in Ubuntu. This prove that the mount has ocured. But Tablet does not show it.
lsmod show the associated libraries attached

[Q] TWRP or CWM for SM-T210 7" 4.4.2 Kitkat

Could anyone link me to a TWRP or CWM custom recovery that I can flash on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 (SM-T210) running the latest 4.4.2 Kitkat update?
Thanks!

After installing a custom recovery (both TWRP and CWM) my tablet always boots into recovery.
Any idea what I might be doing wrong? (I simply flashed the custom recovery through Odin...)

Yes I let the tablet fully boot after flashing the firmware. (Auto reboot is checked by default in Odin...)
I tried the following custom recoveries:
- philz_touch_6.26.1-lt02wifi
- T210.CWM.v6.0.4.9
- TWRP 2.7.1.0

what i did was i flashed the update let it reboot then returned to download mode and flashed this one it worked for me. Are you doing anything different ??
Something with the new 4.4.2 firmware is preventing the OS from booting when a custom recovery is installed. I have the same problem now, and am currently trying to find a solution. For now, you will have to reflash the stock recovery in order to boot.

Thanks for confiming. I had already reflashed the stock recovery for now so my tablet can boot up.
I guess the only thing to do now is wait until this get's resolved.

Which exact firmware did you flash? Cellular South or the Canadian version?

[Q] [N7105] bootloops / random restarts, worse with SIM inserted?

Hi,
when I started using my Note 2 LTE with an LTE sim card (tested LTE long ago without problems), running CM11 nightly from approx. 1 month ago, it started to reboot randomly. But it also happened with the other sim card without LTE, that worked fine before.
Updating CM didn't change anything.
Then I flashed the newest DBT stock ROM for the N7105 (N7105XXUFNE3_N7105DBTFNE1_DBT) (without knowing about the KNOX bootloader...). The behavior was the same with any of the SIM's inserted, but without SIM, it took hours compared to minutes or seconds for it to reboot.
Then I tried to flash the N7105XXDMB2-XEF-Service-Firmware (at this moment, I remember it was warranty void 0 and showed sw rev invalid magic string, EDIT2: perhaps did'nt want to downgrade the bootloader to a non knox version? but without also flashing bootloader it now doesn't flash, trying another old 4.3 formware which is without bootloader perhaps, but didn't work, can I remove it somewhere and how?... /EDIT2) with separated CSC, Bootloader, PDA, Modem and PIT. I also ticked repartiton.
Here the log output:
"<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> FULL_MODEM_N7105XXDMB2.tar.md5 is valid.

It said "set partition" in the box where "PASS" also appears for more than 10 hours, then I unplugged it.
After unplugging:
"<ID:0/008> There is no PIT partition.
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)
<ID:0/008> Removed!!"
It didn't change anything, but when making a factory reset it even rebooted instantly.
I also flashed the pit file with repartition alone. but same behavior.
But after all of this, it was repartitioned.
I successfully flashed philz touch cwm, didn't change anything.
Now I flashed the newest DBT (N7105XXUFNE3_N7105DBTFNE1_DBT) again. No restart without SIM, but didn't test it for hours. With SIM, instant restart after entering PIN. And what's really strange... now it has an instant bootloop without SIM, too. Factory reset made it boot successfully again.
Is something wrong with my radio unit or what else could I try?
EDIT2:
I now flashed philz recovery to gain root access, made that in the recovery, then I installed adbd Insecure v2.00 to have root adb when booting up. Without Sim card it was again fine for a long time and then i put my sim card in and logged proc/kmsg and logcat to files on my device via an adb command.
Here they are, I really hope some can have a look at it and perhaps find anything that helps!

EDIT3:
Here's the last_kmsg log from the same crash:
pastebin.com/pYJK0CPG
From another crash: pastebin.com/q7fj4byt
And the 3rd crash: pastebin.com/AV7RPquK
/EDIT
EDIT4:
I managed to get kernel logs even after adb disconnects! There's also one last_kmsg now that shows some logs before the restart, that looks promising!
See the answer below: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57088630&postcount=7
/EDIT
Any help is much appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

Insert your sim in another phone and remove sim pin lock.
Then insert the unlocked sim in your lte phone and see if it bootloops.
If it boots successfully clear the Sim app data and cache.
Reboot and see if your problem is solved and if you got lucky.
Ravi.

Hi,
ok I'll try that, but what do you mean by clearing the SIM app data and cache and how do I do that?
And I'm interested in why this could help (even though it crashed without SIM sometimes) and what the problem could have been then, could you tell me your thoughts on this?

I don't have a solid reason to support what I said, but from self experience I found out the PIN-locked SIMs generally pose problems at the first time of boot.
Earlier SIMs were 32k and now they come with 64k memory. Previously there was no Android but only Nokia, Siemens, Ericsson, etc which designed both hardware & the software which resulted in both being compatible.
Now to avoid SIM-duplication, mobile companies encrypt the data in it which may give problems when the phone is initializing (since it is a very basic mode the phone is operating in).
All the above combinations do mess up SIM reading capabilities of the phone when software is constantly, something may break.
So, I asked you for the above.
Regarding clearing SIM app menu, you should find it with the name "STK" of with the name of your Mobile Carrier under Apps. You need to clear the cache and data of this app. See "Vodafone Services" app in screenshot.
Thanks for your explanation. But it first rebooted while the new LTE sim was already in it and working for some time..
Do you mean that the software now has a problem with the card even though it worked before or that the software had a problem with the card and modified the card somehow? Just trying to understand this phenomenon .
On a stock rom I can't find such an app. So do I need to flash a Telekom branded ROM to do this (my SIM is from congstar, which is a daughter of Telekom and uses their cell towers)? Right now I have my phone available, which I could flash some other firmware on, and a very basic relatively new Nokia phone. Later I could put the SIM in another android phone, but it would be good not needing to flash another ROM on that.
What are these data containing that should be cleared?
When the problem occured I used Cyanogenmod, which doesn't have such an app, so I also didn't do any settings in such an app, even though the problem then occured. Could it be that you mean some settings one has done in the app could prevent another SIM from initializing correctly, but isn't it also OK if I wiped my whole phone and flashed a clean ROM or did I misunderstand you?
Just want you to remove the Sim Pin lock using another phone and then retest. Thats all. Forget the sim application if you cannot see it.
Just have a hunch that your Sim is probably going corrupt which may need to be replaced by your cellular service provider.
Also if possible check the sim in another phone and see if it is working.
Ravi.

I removed the PIN with another phone, but it keeps crashing with that SIM and without SIM at all, too
I also tested the SIM in another phone, calling and SMS works, data still has to be tested in a smartphone.
I also wiped the EFS partition and restored an EFS backup. Wiped modem, too. Flashed the newest ROM (no matter which country), which is from Singapore (N7105XXUFNJ1_N7105OLBFNJ1_MM1, but has the same N7105XXUFND3 modem), but didn't change anything.
Flashed back newest DBT ROM (N7105XXUFNE3_N7105DBTFNE1_DBT) and Philz recovery.
I now managed to get a kernel log and logcat till after the adb connection is interrupted! (see here for how to do it: stackoverflow.com/questions/6071547/shutdown-log-in-android/27111185#27111185).
Of course the command stopped somewhere in the shutdown process, so they are indeed cut off in the middle of the line.
Normal reboot :
kmsg: nopaste.info/3e7eebd751.html
logcat: en.file-upload.net/download-9912275/logcat243_normalreboot-till-after-adb-disconnect.txt.html
last_kmsg: pastebin.com/GjkHkLAk
crash:
kmsg: nopaste.info/14cef13cdf.html
logcat: en.file-upload.net/download-9912298/logcat2416-till-after-adb-disconnect.txt.html
I wanted to get the last_kmsg from that crash but after the crash, it had a bootloop, which could only be fixed with wiping cache. Sometimes only a new flash via Odin helped then..
This is the last_kmsg after these bootloops, in contrast to my previous last_kmsg's it contains logs before the kernel restart, which could really be helpful!!! (didn't seem like a crash / panic / ooops in all the logs): pastebin.com/ikqkmeCh
Here is it at least the end and hopefully more important part in text form for people to better find this thread:

Sorry man
Don't know about logcats and I am a newbie in that area.
If your sim is ok then well, I don't know where your phone is failing.
Could be a bad battery but that would freeze the phone or lose power and thats not the case.
Just see if you have not undervolted your cpu and are using the proper governor.
You have cleared the dalvik, cache too right. If not then try that.
Yes make sure you are using the latest updates and be sure to check out the known bugs list of the rom you are installing. But thats pretty basic stuff which you may already be knowing about.
Good luck then.
Ravi.

Ok, thanks for the help anyways!!
It doesn't freeze, but sometimes, not always, it just went off and stayed off. But the restarts then would have to be instantiated because of the battery.. any way to check this?
No, I am using stock kernel and governor settings from the Samsung stock rom and kernel now, that should work, if these are shipped with the devices or as official updates.
I already wiped dalvik numerous times, always when I flashed another ROM.
I tried the latest stock rom, cyanogenmod, philz recovery (or stock Samsung) and latest stock or devil kernel.

As of now, it could be helpful to try swapping the battery with a good known one if you are getting restarts. That's all from my side.

Sure ok, I'll try to find another battery I can test it with and will report back, if it changed anything or not.
Sooooo, it's pretty late but for anyone facing the same problem:
I switched the battery and everything was working. I also got another log where it said something like no battery and shutting down, the same as when removing the battery while the phone is powered on.

Native Linux (postmarketOS) on Tab 3?

I've been trying to port postmarketOS to this tablet however I need some help. (https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_3_10.1_3G_(samsung-santos103g))
My progress: I compiled the kernel successfully (from santos10-dev on GitHub), however due to the initramfs being compressed with gzip in postmarketOS the kernel crashes with RAMDISK: gzip decompressor not configured!, so I enabled CONFIG_RD_GZIP, but now the kernel won't load at all (on both of my tablets). I also tried the maximum-attention hook because the 3g variant has a vibration motor but nothing happened and to be sure that the hook works I took the script from the hook and tried it in TWRP out and it vibrated.
The next thing I did is analyze the boot.img from postmarketOS and LineageOS (from nels83) and noticed that the boot.img contains a file called ramdisk. In the LineageOS boot.img the ramdisk is compressed with LZMA and in the postmarketOS boot.img the file is compressed with gzip, but the kernel crashed with the gzip-compressed ramdisk, so the kernel did load, right?
I also made a 619k ohm UART adapter and I'm getting output but after the logo shows on the tablet nothing more will output. The pmOS wiki says that I need to add console=ttyS0,115200n8 to CONFIG_CMDLINE but in TWRP and LineageOS, there is no ttySX in /dev, so I enabled serial-related kernel configs and still nothing :/
Im not good at programming and running native Linux on this tablet would be so cool! And due to this tablet having MHL this could be a really nice portable PC (even though it only has 1GB of RAM...)
Here are a few logs I got:
Spoiler: Kernel crashing without CONFIG_RD_GZIP enabled (from /proc/last_kmsg)

If there's someone who is willing to help me improve postmarketOS on this tablet, feel free to contact me:
(Matrix) @ungeskriptet:matrix.org
Finally got it to work. This commit should fix it.
Wiki page
I used this kernel instead: https://github.com/dpdudek/android_kernel_samsung_santos10
so can we now install linux? the device is still in "not booting" category on pmos website.
You might be looking at the 3G version. The Wi-Fi port also works on the 3G variant (and LTE maybe?) but it really isn't usable with X11 right now although wayland seems to work somewhat fine without HW acceleration. I could only find GPU drivers for ARM for this tablet since it is x86 and has a PowerVR GPU.
great, 3g version is what i have. and i dodnt noticed when wiki page mooved to "boot successful" category, sorry.

but my question is when i am executing the instruction of installation via pmbootstrap i'm being asked for device codename, neither santos103g not p5200 there, but santos10wifi. so if i have 3g version, should i use santos10wifi or what? sorry my bad english and stupid questions
oh sorry ive didnt notice that sign on santos103g wiki page saying the installation is the same
Select the Wi-Fi version. The 3G version uses the same kernel and the only thing that won't work is 3G.
I recommend you to use Weston if possible, as it is the best working graphical environment. Gnome also uses Wayland so it should be also good, but currently it won't start (haven't figured it out yet).
great, thanks very much for your work. btw what user interfaces can i have working? you said wayland so i've tried plasma-bigscreen and stuck at "Loading..." however weston wokrs well.
Your only option is Weston for a usable interface at the moment and AFAIK plasma-bigscreen is for TVs.
hi ,
i'm sorry but i did not understand how to install in my TAB 3 wifi
can some one share the install process because realy intersting about this project.
First you need to have Linux installed on your PC/in a VM (if you use a VM, you need to setup USB forwarding), I recommend you installing Manjaro XFCE.
Once you are booted into Linux, follow these steps:
Spoiler: Instructions to install pmbootstrap from pip (any Linux distro)
1. Install pip from your package manager:
For Arch Linux (and Manjaro): sudo pacman -S python-pip
For Debian (and Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Pop OS): sudo apt-get install python3-pip
2. Install pmbootstrap with pip:
pip install --user pmbootstrap && source ~/.profile
Spoiler: Instuctions to install pmbootstrap from the AUR (Arch Linux and Arch-based distros only)
1. Option: Install using an AUR helper
Code:
git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/paru-bin
cd paru-bin
makepkg -si
paru -S pmbootstrap
2. Option: Install with Pamac (GUI method, preinstalled on Manjaro)
Launch Pamac → 3 Dots → Preferences → Third Party → Turn on "Enable AUR support", "Check for updates" and "Check for development packages updates"
Search for pmbootstrap and install it.
Spoiler: Instructions to install postmarketOS
Launch a terminal and initialize pmbootstrap:
Code:
pmbootstrap init
# Work path: ~/.pmbootstrap
# Channel: edge
# Vendor: samsung
# Device codename: santos10wifi (choose this even if you have a 3G or LTE tablet)
# Enable Wi-Fi firmware
# Username: santos (choose a name you like)
# User interface: weston (currently only weston is the most usable UI, X11-based UIs are very laggy)
# Don't change additional options
# Extra packages: vim, htop, onboard (recommended, but optional)
# Enable your timezone
# Choose your default locale (en_US.UTF-8 for American English)
# Device hostname: santos10wifi (choose a hostname you like)
# Copy public SSH keys (recommended if you have generated a pair but optional)
# Build outdated packages during 'pmbootstrap install': y
Generate the images:
Code:
pmbootstrap install
# Set a password
Flash the kernel and rootfs to the tablet (backup your data before):
Code:
# Put the device into download mode: Power & Vol -
# This should be fast so be ready to put the device into download mode again after it reboots
pmbootstrap flasher flash_kernel
# Flashing the rootfs might take a while
pmbootstrap flasher flash_rootfs
Spoiler: Connecting to a Wi-Fi network
Connect the tablet to a PC (it should create a new network interface):
Code:
ssh [email protected]
# change santos to your username, if you changed it and type yes if asked
sudo nmtui
# A blue menu will appear
In nmtui:
Activate a connection → Select your network → Type your Wi-Fi password → Quit nmtui
When connected, unplug the cable.
After you followed these steps your tablet is running pmOS with a Wi-Fi connection.
thanks friend will try now
i get this errors in log file when generating the image :
/home/wintosh/.pmbootstrap/chroot_rootfs_samsung-santos10wifi --cache-dir /home/wintosh/.pmbootstrap/cache_apk_x86 --initdb --arch x86 add alpine-base
EDIT:
i was it using Windows subsystem for Linux (WSL) and it's not compatible
@Ungeskriptet many thanks for your efforts.
@kls0e I'll try mainlining the device (after I mainlined GT-I9100G or not) with this kernel. This could fix many problems like X11
great. I will be happy to test and update the documentation.

- I am assuming that the device is connected to the Linux (Fedora in my case) computer via USB:
I get:
Code:
$ pmbootstrap flasher flash_kernel
[sudo] password for phr:
[19:41:24] (rootfs_samsung-santos10wifi) mkinitfs samsung-santos10wifi
[19:41:28] (native) flash kernel samsung-santos10wifi
[19:41:29] (native) install heimdall avbtool
< wait for any device >
- and nothing else happens on the computer or the tablet . . I was expecting that pbmbootstrap would find the USB-connected tablet and do the flashing . .
BTW, I have not installed TWRP - the native download mode should be OK?
Thanks,
Phil.

Hmm. Seems like your tablet isn't being recognized by pmbootstrap.
Does your tablet show up in lsusb or dmesg on your PC when connected via USB?
TWRP isn't neccessary for postmarketOS unless you flash it via a recovery ZIP, so thats not the issue.

Ah! - there were two problems - I had forgotten to turn on USB debugging and secondly I had some dodgy USB cables - lucky #3 worked!
OK, so the tablet booted up happily with pmOS ! I played around with the tk stuff for a while and was able to start Wayland terminals, and the screen looks very nice - but I can't do much with it because I can't get access to anything else and no visual keyboard pops up . .
Also, although it still showing up on my LAN as 192.168.1.105, I can't even ping it, let alone ssh to it . . but still - some progress! I am happy that I have made it this far but is there more that can be done with the tablet now?
I should write out my variations on using Fedora and clarifying some steps too . .
Thanks!
hey people, i recently tried setting up postmarketOS on Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 and i am facing the same problem as philip, but changing the usb cables and trying to flash from other computers (other linux mint, and ubuntu) did not help.
i am new to this and just started with postmarketOS trying to use the old samsung device without google stuffs...
tldr: use "Power + Volume Down"!
Spoiler: this is what happens when you press "Power + Volume Up" instead...
usb debugging is activated and pmbootstrap installed/prepared as described above by Ungeskriptet.
(Edit: I wasnt following the guide accordingly, i pressed "Power + Vol Up" instead of "Power + Vol Down"....)
i am using Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnamon btw.
when doing "pmbootstrap init" multiple times (to make sure everything is set up fresh) i am also asked for "Zap existing chroots to apply configuration? (y/n) [y]: _ "
-- is it fine to just "y" there?
so moving on to flashing i am receiving same as philip:
Spoiler: wait for any device - problem
Code:
$ pmbootstrap flasher flash_kernel
[16:45:32] WARNING: package postmarketos-mkinitfs: aport version 1.1.2-r4 is lower than 1.2-r0 from the binary repository. 1.2-r0 will be used when installing postmarketos-mkinitfs. See also: <https://postmarketos.org/warning-repo2>

[16:45:32] (native) flash kernel samsung-santos10wifi
< wait for any device >
however "lsusb" doesnt show any Samsung device
but "dmesg" displays a lot including:
Spoiler: dmesg output
Code:

-- the same without the line "USB disconnect, device number 10" does appear when starting the tablet in original android - so i would say, the usb cable is working
deviceinfo
from the wiki i already tried setting the deviceinfo "deviceinfo_flash_fastboot_vendor_id="04e8" "
in "~/.pmbootstrap/cache_git/pmaports/device/testing/device-samsung-santos10wifi/deviceinfo"
-- but i am still "waiting for any device"
and the wiki of deviceinfo states as obsolete options:
flash_fastboot_vendor_id: fastboot used to have a -i option, but this was removed (#1830). Since we only had one device using this and nobody to verify if the option is really needed with this device, we decided to remove it. If you are interested in bringing it back, please create a new issue.

udev
the fix "Maybe you need to install udev rules on your host Linux distribution" (also from wiki), i do not really understand how to start with ..could you give me a hint? browsing resulted in finding this https://community.linuxmint.com/software/view/udev - Version 245.4-4ubuntu3.14 of this was already installed
last solution from wiki with "pmbootstrap shutdown" did not help either
but some different output at dmesg was produced (dont know it it really was because of pmb shutdown):

when starting the tablet with power+vol [*edit: Vol Up] i am seeing "Android system recovery <3e>" quit fast ..is this where i need to start the "pmbootstrap flasher flash_kernel"? (i also tried starting the flasher and waiting for the device when booting using power+vol.. ending up with the same result)
Spoiler: device displays this when fastbooting(?)

and in the background i can see "Kein Befehl" + the green Android thing with a warning in its open "stomach"
additionally the battery (the original already "gave up" and was replaced earlier) shows a sign for two days now displaying a red cross in the battery icon, and it has not been loading since then, just reducing its capacity to 35% at the moment ..so time is kind of running out soon :x -- it was loading fine when not activated and running android.
__________
do you have any idea what i am doing wrong?
thanks for your help!
ps: sorry for the long post, i just wanted to give you all information needed..
"Power + Volume Down" = flash mode <- this is what we want.
("Power + Volume Up" = recovery mode)
My fault.

Answer: No!
I was just too stupid... I pressed "Power + Volume Up" so I entered the recovery mode..... ._.
(-> So it has not been "prepared as described above" (using "Power + Volume Down") and that was the fault.)
Sorry for the troublemaking.
And thanks a lot for the guide, @Ungeskriptet !
I will now step into installing packages for firefox, visual keyboard, etc. ...
-> Do you have any recommodation for setting up the keyboard?
