Apologies if this has been already discussed--if so, my search string skills must have eroded with the quickness.
I started experiencing a strange phenomenon wherein, while listening to either a podcast (Doggcatcher) or music (Google Play Music and Amazon Prime Music), at random intervals, the volume would just mute itself. Ultimately, I *think* I have narrowed down the root cause to losing and re-acquiring Verizon Wireless service--although the evidence is tenuous at best:
these "blips" would only happen in the subway (I'm in New York City)
I would always check to see if my headphones were disconnected, but they were not, as the podcast I was listening to was still playing (I have Doggcatcher set to pause any podcast when headphones are disconnected)
rebooting didn't resolve the issue
on a whim, I turned my ringer and notifications volume up slightly, and noticed that at certain intervals my phone would blurt out, "Verizon Wireless" or "Lost service" and my volume would cut low briefly (but then reset up)
Ever since I notched the ringer and notification volumes up, I haven't experienced my podcasts or music resetting. Again, this is all tenuous "evidence" at best, but it's all I've got to go on. Anyone else experience this? It's a little irritating to have Robot Lady chime in with, "Verizon Wireless" and "Lost Service" every so often when I'm listening to something (although not nearly as irritating as having to micromanage my media volume).
Software Version = Marshmallow VS98625A
Advanced Calling = Activated
Rooted = no (natch, since I'm on 25A)
Doesn't seem like anyone else was afflicted by this but in case you were: I stumbled across the resolution myself.
Under "Settings" > "Sound & Notification" > "Sound effects", I had "Sound when roaming" checked. This caused the phone to announce, "Verizon Wireless" every time it connected to the network, and "Loss of service" when losing signal.
These announcements turn media volume down a notch as they are being said, then turn it back up when they are done.
If all volume ASIDE from media volume is muted, the announcements somehow turn down the media volume to zero, but never turn it back up. (I suspect this is a bug.) And if all volume ASIDE from media volume is muted, then one would never hear the announcements, making the volume muting seem like a complete fluke.
That's why my podcasts would mute themselves riding subway. Turning off "Sound when roaming" prevents these announcements from happening and thus leaves the rest of your volume alone.

The gym that I go to has terrible reception and consequently I often get the big 'limited service' message on my Desire screen when I'm in there. What gets annoying is this is coupled with a periodic double-beep to signify the loss of service, which is played over whatever music I may be listening to on the media player.
Does anyone have any idea how to turn this off? I can't seem to find a setting for it and setting the phone to silent has no effect.
I don't know why this is, but it's frustrating beyond explanation: Every once in a while the volume of my device changes. This is not an "official" change, as I always have this thing at the lowest volume possible, but every once in a while after a reboot or just out of nowhere, that lowest volume most definitely becomes louder. I'm accustomed to a low volume, so for my notification and ringtone to suddenly be louder always startles the hell out of me.
I cannot figure out why this is, and I realize the number of things that could be causing this is dependent on what apps I have which are far too numerous to list, so I'm hoping someone else has had this problem and knows the solution.
Thank you all in advance
Cm12 has a setting in sounds and notification that gradually increases volume over time. If you're on sense there is a setting that increases the volume if the phone is in your pocket or turned face down.

Unfortunately this isn't it - I have "Pocket mode" and "Quiet ring on pickup" both unchecked (unrooted, stock). I also thought it might be somehow tied to Media volume, as the app I notice this primarily in is Google Hangouts (that's about the only sound-notification I get outside phone calls), but that's at a vol of 1 along with everything else.

I have no idea then. I had volume issue with hangouts in particular in the past but it was from the volume being to quiet. Maybe try a different ringtone for it. I'm not sure what else to suggest.
I rarely make calls in my car, so I do not know if this was much of an issue on my older head unit*, or if it was a symptom prior to root.
I have a new unit from Pumpkin - MTC8-KLD6-V2.81
Rooted with Malaysk's latest ROM
My phone (HTC M8) is connected through bluetooth. Music plays just fine through the system.
When I make a call, however;
1) Music Stops and head unit goes silent (not a problem)
2) I hear a bit of static (I have had low volume static since I upgraded to Malaysk if the head unit is on and nothing is playing)(again, not really a problem)
3) Phone starts to make a call.
4) Static suddenly goes away, as if the volume was suddenly turned down
5) I can barely hear the phone ring through the head unit.
I have tried turning up the volume all the way on the phone (volume on the phone seems to do nothing when in a bluetooth call) and turning up the head unit. If I have the head unit all the way up, I CAN hear reasonably well, but that's at a volume of 30 when everything else plays loud enough at 5.
I have looked for different setting on the phone and on the head unit and have found nothing. I have adjusted the Factory Settings -> Audio, but that changes bluetooth as a whole and make the music play too loud.
I would say that the issue is is similar to switching the phone from "regular" (where 1-10 is set for being near one's ear) to "speaker" (where 1-10 can be heard across the room) and the phone is telling the head unit to stay at "regular".
Actually, on my first head unit the problem was just the opposite and phone calls were always way too loud.
Anyone have ideas on other settings I should try?
Thanks
I think there are options in the factory settings are for individual volume controls.

There are, but the option is for "Bluetooth" in general.
Bluetooth itself is fine, and I can listen to music from my phone through Bluetooth at whatever level I choose. The problem is that when it switches to phone (dialing out or coming in) the volume drops drastically and I have to turn the head unit's volume up all the way to hear at all. That means the music from Bluetooth will come back at speaker (or at least ear) damaging levels once the call ends.
If adjusting the BT volume is not enough, test with others volume settings lowering/raising some of them.
the norm is the hands free on these units are not the best and there are some mods out there on the forum..
Sorry if this has already been covered -- I couldn't find anything though.
I've been experiencing a something very annoying over the past few months.
When the phone is playing media (music, youtube, etc.) and a notification comes in with a notification sound, the media volume lowers as the notification sound plays (as expected), but the media volume doesn't return to normal after the notification sound ends. Even pushing the media volume to max leaves the actual volume a lot lower than what is normally max volume. This happens with both media playing through the phone speakers and through bluetooth audio.
The only way I found to return the media volume to normal after this happens is to restart the phone.
This basically forces me to leave the phone silent unless I want a severely limited media volume range.
Considering I haven't seen discussion about this seemingly glaring issue, I'm wondering if it's something isolated to me. Is there an app/service that I should try clearing data for to try to fix this? This happened with both oreo and pie (was hoping the update to pie would've fixed it).
Haven't seen this specific issue answered yet - if its a duplicate somewhere a point to the right thread would be appreciated.
For whatever reason over the last couple months, the volume on my pixel 2xl will jump way up (or way down) when on bluetooth either after a call or after using google assistant. It doesn't seem to happen everytime, but just now I was listening to music on my bluetooth headphones at my desk and got a call. I took the call on the headphones by answering the phone and then as soon as I hung up, the volume on the phone shot up to 100% which was not enjoyable.
This also happens when connected to my truck (Ford SYNC) or my running earbuds, and it can also crank the media volume way down (happens frequently in the truck) after a call, at which point I have to manually adjust the volume again. The same activity also happens if I activate google assistant and issue a voice command, but in both cases it is not 100% consistent. It appears like the system is trying to dynamically change the volume for some perceived situation, but it sucks at it.
I also use A2DP app for volume control settings and app launching for all my connections, but I have used that since I got this phone 2 years ago and none of the settings have changed.
Anyone had similar behavior and found a fix? It is really annoying when my music goes so low that I can't even hear it in the truck after a call, and equally annoying when I have headphones on and it cranks the volume up and tries to blow out my eardrums.
