As asked in the title. Does it matter what charger you use? Can I use a 1A charger or does it need to be 2A? My phone has been rebooting and overheating I think it's only on a certain 1A charger. I applied the thermal mod and it was fine until i was charging it up with said charger. Is it just coincidence?
What I have experienced with mine is that, it does matter what charger you use. When you use a different charger it might seem okay for some time, but overtime you will start to see the effects.

I just bought a generic USB wall charger and it's taking much longer to charge than the htc charger that came with my EVO.
I'd like to determine the amps/ma the charger is actually putting out. I don't have a multi-meter, so I am hoping there is a hidden menu or app which will tell me what the phone sees.
Any suggestions?
You can download aLogcat and watch for the current usage, it should post it every so often. It should also say on the charger somewhere too, the stock wall charger is 1000mA
I tried this and found nothing showing charge rate, only the battery percent.
A standard usb wall charger should equal how long it takes to charge if you were plugged into you pc. If it is taking longer than that then you got a super el cheapo charger that puts out less than 500ma (milliamps).
I would be carefull too, cheap usb wall chargers are not know to output clean power and have killed devices. By overvolting/charging them.
I have been doing some testing lately with the htc charger and a pc and have come to the conclusion that the htc wall charger pushing 1 amp (1000ma) charges the battery too fast and doesnt allow for a "strong" charge. Meaning your battery will drain faster. The htc charger is, i believe not meant to be your everyday charger, only a boost charger to get you charged back up quickly.
This is common battery knowledge when it comes to charging... you can charge a battery too fast, and a slower; 500ma "trickle charge" is much cleaner and better for your battery.
Some maybe argue this, and thats ok, these are just my personal findings.

I'm not seeing that info in the log either.
The charger had a weird range of 250-1000ma.
Yeah I think I'll invest in a better charger just to be safe.
Thank you both for your replies.
can i use charger from motorola v950 on EVO?
thanks
Any micro usb charger should work. Not sure what that phones uses but if they look the same it should work fine.
yes is micro usb
Not all chargers are alike and some kernels will not allow certain chargers to work correctly. Amps and voltages can vary as well. Some will lock up your screen when you plug them in.
I have a wall charger that is for my samsung. It did not charge up my EVO with CM6 but when I installed MYN's ROM and AVA's ROM they would charge. I installed King's Kernel and it works fine. CM6 will not take the charge.
Also the cheap battery charger and battery from Ebay does not like the EVO, DROID X or my Samsung. I think the current is too high and it freezes up the phones. I would not risk them being damaged or overcharged.
If you notice your phone getting hot while charging or the screen locks up then unplug(captain obvious )
oh ok well i just ordered this battery from ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/3500mAh-Extende...ps=63&clkid=5314589341353148697#ht_4146wt_911
so will see how it will work,,???

That's not how current works. The current rating on the charger sets the maximum amount of current the phone can draw from it, it does not set the minimum amount of current that goes into the phone. A 1000mA charger and a 2000mA charger are functionally identical if a device that only draws 500mA is connected to them. Now if a device like the EVO that can draw a maximum of 1000mA is connected to a charger that can only supply 500mA, then either the phone charges more slowly or the charger pops its overcurrent protection and it stops working. Chargers that can handle more than 500mA have their data wires tied together so that the phone can recognize that it is in fact capable of more than 500mA. When you connect the phone to a computer or a charger that provides only 500mA the data lines aren't tied together, so 500mA is the most the phone will draw - which is good since standard usb ports are only rated at up to 500mA. All MicroUSB chargers should be 5V, that is the standard voltage for the USB specification. Now dodgey chargers may have bad regulation in them, which could mean that the actual voltage is more or less than 5V or it has an additional AC ripple that could cause problems.
so can i use charger from motorola? on that charger is 5V-850Am..

Should be fine.
The stock HTC is 5V-1.0A... your charger will just take slightly longer to charger the battery. No big deal

i use my girls bb bold 9700 charger. Works fine for me.
my g pad takes forever to charge. it could be charging for 2 hours and only get charged 10%.
I've tried charging it with the supplied charger as well as chargers for other tablets and the result is the same.
I remember back when I had a nook colour and if you would charge it with a different charger than the supplied one it would take forever because the nook color's charger had more pins to it or something, is this the case here with the g pad's cable?
is it the cables problem or do I have a faulty internal battery? I notice when I charge it the power brick, no matter which one I use, oem or not, doesn't heat up at all. before it would heat up a lot when it was charging but it doesn't now.
I had this problem with my GPad.
Not only was it slow charging for a wall charge.
But every 5 charge cycles it would be in the wall for 8 hours and would be at 20%
Way i fixed this was, put a QI mod into my GPad to enable charging wirelessly.
(It charges via USB) so it doesn't fry the Internals.
I've moded the Pad so it runs at lowest MHZ and lowest brightness whilst charging, adds an extra 3% an hour.
Hourly charge rate is about 12%
Best part is it hasn't had any charging bugs that I had with the wall charger,
Been using mod for about 5 months.
Alls I need to do is drop and go and it charges, very convenient.

If you're still under warranty, have it replaced. It appears to be defective.

Are you using the supplied charger and the heavy gauge usb cable? The cable also matters in this situation. I have a long thin cable that seems to charge several devices slower, which I wouldn't have believed until I had proof in front of me. If you are using the heavy gauge cable as well, then yes you must have a defect, contact LG for warranty if possible.
I had the same issues, it turned out my usb cable (probably got twisted and) is damaged internally.
Sometimes it works fine but it's kinda unreliable now.

I have a couple of generic chargers I've been using with my note 2 for a couple of years. I realize these will charge slower than the samsung fast charge charger but is there any reason we can't use them or will they impact battery life (I would think they would increase battery life); i supect the answer is that they are fine but maybe battery technology has changed and there is some 'smarts' between charger and battery that would be damaged by these ?
No issue using your old charger except as you mentioned it won't be fast charging. I do not believe that the fast charging will hurt the battery. The fast charge only works for the first portion of the charge then the rate of charge slows to a trickle charge.
U can use any charger but i recommend to use any charger with 2amp output as it charges quick 40% in 30 mins insteas of 50%in 30 mins with original.
Original charger has two modes 9v and 5v it charges with 9v untill 50% and switches to 5v after that.
I think the unit i use is a sanyo 800ma 5 volt. I don't mind the slwo charge as long as it can't harm the battery. This is only used during travel and office; @ home I use the charger that came with the device.
You can definitely use another charger. Like said before it wont charge as fast. The adapter that comes with the phone will charge your phone at 9v instead of the normal 5v. If you use a different usb cable with the charger it will still charge at 9v. If you change the adapter, it will charge at the normal 5v whether you use the another usb cable or the one that came with the phone. The usb cable is just wires. The wall adapter is what determines how fast it will charge...
So the G4 comes supplied with a 1.8A output charger, and I am wondering whether it is okay to use another charger I have, which has a 2.1A output? As in will it damage the battery over time?
I have heard the G4 supports quick charging so I'm guessing in that case it would be okay.
Thanks in advance.
It's fine. The phone will charge at whatever current it deems safe, even if you had a 100A supply available.

Would it charge faster?
Maybe a little.
I get about 1600mA with the stock charger. And about 1900mA with my Quick Charge 2.0 charger, which can provide the equivalent of >2.1A. I don't have any good-quality normal 2.1A chargers available to try.
So the largest benefit you could see would be about 20%, if the phone charged as quickly as it does from a QC 2.0 charger. I doubt it would charge that quickly, personally.
