Ahead of my own MoDaCo Custom ROM for the Mate 8, which is coming soon, I've created a custom ROM starter template for anyone who wants to have a go. It's a bit different.
Basically, this ROM template will let you create your own custom ROM VERY easily. Easier than ever before. All you have to do is...
download my ROM template zip
make the changes to the system of your phone just as you'd like them for your custom ROM
run some commands on your device via ADB
add the resulting files to the template zip
That's it! No messaging around with install scripts, no rebuilding anything complex, just mod - and go!
Preparation
ONLY if you are completing the process for the first time, you need to set up a file on your microSD card - so launch and ADB shell and type the following commands...
Code:
touch /sdcard/exclude
echo app > /sdcard/exclude
echo priv-app >> /sdcard/exclude
ROM build
Once you have your system up and running how you want it, and you're ready to distribute it (just the system and cust dirs mind, it won't pull the data dir, so your personal data is safe), reboot to recovery, launch an ADB shell and type the following commands:
Code:
mount /system
tar -X /sdcard/exclude -zcvpf /sdcard/system.therest.tar.gz /system/
tar -zcvpf /sdcard/system.apps.tar.gz /system/app /system/priv-app
mount /cust
tar -zcvpf /sdcard/cust.tar.gz /cust
You'll then end up with 3 new files on your SD card - system.apps.tar.gz (which is apps and priv-apps from system), system.therest.tar.gz (which, as the name suggests, is the rest of the system partition!) and cust.tar.gz with is the cust partition contents.
Update the template zip with these 3 files and that's it. It's ready to distribute for people to flash via TWRP! If you have updated the boot image, you'll need to replace that too, the easiest way is to do a TWRP backup then pull that file from the SD card and drop it into the template zip as boot.img. That's really it!
I hope this inspires a few people to start playing around with custom ROMs for the Mate 8.. more cool things coming soon!
Oh and the all important template file...
DOWNLOAD - r1-customromtemplate-huawei-mate8-nxtl29-next-b180.zip [MEGA]
NOTE: You should not flash a template ROM onto a different version base ROM. You should always ensure you have a stock dload ROM to restore to if needed. Use at your own risk!

Bad news... The kernel source doesn't work properly!
I suspect it's just outdated, but using it results in graphical artefacts and random reboots.
I've raised it with Huawei but I'm not optimistic of an update any time soon I'm afraid.

Yeah, that's what keeps developers from jumping on board. It's a shame too because Huawei builds some great phones, probably the best but they severely lack in the software department.

When you type Mate 8 into the search box, this is what comes up:
Mate 8, NXT, Android 6.0, EMUI 4.1
And it seems to be the latest most complete open source they have released for the mate 8, as a matter of fact the vae released 2 versions, I have dowloaded them both, heres the link to my Gdrive if you want to take a look:

Nope, wrong!
They released this one a year ago (aprox):
Mate 8 OpenSource %28 NXT Android 6.0%2Ckernel%2Coverseas%29 .tar
They have just released this one in 2017, around febraury:
NXT-MM_EMUI4.1_opensource.tar
And no, they are not the same! latest is still Marshmallow yes but it has been released recently. I know cuz I have been looking all over for this, like I said I have them both.
You are correct, its outdated since Mate 8 is already in Nougat but the fact of the matter is that emui 4.1 seems to work better on the mate 8, better than emui 5.0 (nougat) and seems like Huawei is never going to release a polished Emui 5.1 ROM for the Mate 8 and of course they are not going to release the Open Source, they dont want us upgrading the mate 8, they want us to buy the Mate 9.

My bad then, I was pretty sure it was the same. Still, it sucks that's only EMUI 4.1, newer software may make LOS 14 happen quicker (and easier, but still not easy).
I asked by mail with Contact Us form in huawei site to release an updated open source software, maybe if enough people do this we can make it happen ?
(I know we're a bit off topic here but it just went as is).
That's what they answered :
Dear Sir/Madame,
Thank you for contacting Huawei France Customer Care.
We are happy to see your interest in the Mate 8 and we will forward your feedback and request to the proper departments. We can assure you that at this point we are doing our best to improve user access to our software.

I contacted them too, they gave me a link to their Open source site, there is where I got the latest version of the open source for the mate 8 , then they said that if I had any questions, I should just reply on the same mail they answered and I did asked them a few things and that was it, did not hear from them anymore =(
Theres a good chance that Lineage 14 could happen for our mate 8 because there already are 2 AOSP ROMs on Nougat 7.1.2 version that have been developed for the Honor 8, a device that happens to be almost identical to the Mate 8.
I have been thinking on starting a challenge for developers, all the Mate 8 owners that want AOSP ROM should chip in and raise certain amount of money then we should offer this money as a prize for the developer that delivers a stable AOSP ROM for our mate 8!
LAOS 14 is already on its way courtesy of @_skypol0 who already brought us LAOS 13 but without any 7.0 source is not the easiest thing and he is the only one on this project so far. Anyway he's working on it. And a lot of thanks to him for this.

I totally agree the worst thing I did...
I really like this tabelt for what it is in premium edition. No lack of power for all jobs that are to be done with it and some light gaming. Custom ROMs aren't there, that's true, but honesty: what do you need a custom ROM for on this specific tablet? For me - and I'm a flashaholic as well - all has been there from the start. No need to flash any custom ROMs at all. Only thing I'm missing is the lack of updates regarding, at least, Marshmallow. Huawei definitely has to catch up-to other manufacturers regarding this special aspect. Just my 2 cent.
Sent from my HTC 10 using XDA Labs
I don't regret byuing this device, all works great and theres enough power to get things done. Marshmallow would be great, with doze. Let's wait and see will we get that someday. I asked huawei about that update, but theirs answer was that they don't know will they update. Cm would be great alternative.
I have had this device for two days now, the Premium version and i just love it, perfect size in my opinio, and big plus is the u can make calls and sms with it hope to get the android 6.0 some day
Although I found this today, its one of those ad deals you have to do first before you can download. So not sure if you want to do it or not.

Hi guys,
Since today Huawei delivers the open sourcecode for the drivers, I guess.
Anyone in here capable to create a nice clean AOSP ROM or anything else good for our tablet?

I do not have the experience with ROM building, forking, ... etc. here.
One good room would be good.
Edit. Nevermind
Anyone with the LTE version of this can you upload to a cloud link so that I can download? I would rather not waste my time having to send an email to [email protected] just to get it. Thanks

Hi! Thank you, i'll do an AOSP for our poor tablet, the only problem in my case, I'm unable to unlock the bootloader because i haven't in dev options "OEM unlock". If I'll pass this issue, I'll immediately start to develop the ROM.

Yeah it's a pain to unlock the bootloader. But since I need to install Google Workspace device policy I have no other option
@Crypto18 - There is a possibilty to unlock the bootloader by using dc-unlocker - amount about 4 Euro. I had success in doing so a year ago. It would be very nice to get an AOSP-ROM für the tablet.
I think, I unlocked it with dc-unlocker, too, four years ago or so.
I would be happy to have any clean/empty/fresh AOSP ROM for this tablet, as up to today it is still fast and really usable.
If you need any help, I would also be eager to learn how to do it (building a ROM). @Crypto18

I did the DC-unlocker thing today as described in the sticky, so it still works. Somebody in this thread mentioned that it worked for him without the OEM unlock option (it disappeared in EMUI 4), but to be on the safe side I had done a downgrade to EMUI 3 before (the oldest one I found didn't have a working dialer, I didn't try the landscape calculator trick to activate the manufacturere mode, but updated to a later EMUI 3 version that had a a working dialer: "Huawei MediaPad M2-801L Android 5.1.1 EMUI 3.1 B007.zip").
I am now looking for a working TWRP (see my post in the sticky thread a few minutes ago).
If you manage to unlock your bootloader, I would be willing to go the "build your own version from scratch" way with you. I have experience as embedded Linux developer one decade ago, but never did it for Android. Would be more fun to have a second person interested in this "classic" tablet.
@coocooc , @Crypto18 ,

Crypto18 so far did not come back, and I didn't start the journey yet.
I am on the way to prepare a Linux laptop for building Android and SBC stuff, but family life does not allow to spend many hours on my pet projects.

Yeah i am a fellow canuck user and I knew what I was getting into when i decided to buy the Nova Plus; ZERO support and correspondence for anything relating to our model. I don't even bother contacting them. In the bigger mobile phone market arena , we are so insignificant to them.
There is little chance we will get ANY unofficial or beta release. Unless LineageOS gets rolling. Anyways, this Beta program is promising news regardless, even if not for us.

You should read this: https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-galaxy-siii-samsung-galaxy-note-ii-htc-hd2/
tl; dr: we aren't going to have Oreo soon, but we should have an updated kernel to mainline Linux in the near future (no eta), and only after that Oreo (or probably Android P - even if it's the case, it won't take as much time like this) development will continue.

wow thank you I read whole post and it gave me hope
Any news on twrp for this device? Or anyone heard of the kernel source to be released?
Really looking forward to open up the box and put an asop rom into it! But until it's available it stays in the drawer
for the p20 lite, project treble already works.
I really like the aosp rom but there is no support for the notch, which means that notifications will disappear behind it.
And it doesnt support round corners
there is no relationship in the porject treble and the release of kernel source
treble will just speed up the release of updates but nothing else
if you bought it only for the purpose of changing the rom then I advise you to bring it back to the store while it's time
There are alot of treble roms out there. When source is released there will be propper twrp available. So this way I can profit from treble developers not only Huawei. History has shown there are usually not a lot of roms for Huawei phones.
