Somewhat extreme phone issues. - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys. This is my first post on XDA so sorry if I am a little bit lost. Anyhow i've had my zenfone 2 for about half a year now and recently i've been having more and more diffrent issues. Firstly my loudspeaker doesn't or rather it does but only at ceirtan volumes but it can never produce anything that can be heard normally. Secondly my charging has became extremly slow and fast charge does not come up at all (it did before) i am using stock cable and 18w asus charger box. It takes him around 6-7 hours to fully charge without using it and if i use it ,it "estimates" say it will take around 1 day and 22 hours... Even when my battery does charge fully it consumes it really quickly even when in Supersave+airplane mode+all apps off from background and with its screen off. Around 1% per 2 mins. Third issue is that my "homescreen and recent apps button" randomly stop working. My PC doesnt detect it when i connect it via usb cabble (usb debbuging off and on) neither does my Zenfone say anything about connected to my PC. Other issues would be random SIM card things (like its been removed and put back in) , SD slot doesnt work and my Zenfone sometimes does think i have the Asus cover on him and i cant get out of it and unlock my phone.
It does look like either a hardware thing or a corrupt build or smth. (Personal opinnion)

*If you want to know any other deitails let me know
I have not rooted my phone or installed any custom UI/Build/CM
Let me know what you think and what i should do.
Sorry for any grammatic or word error.
Thanks in advance.

Did this start with the .184 update? How long have you been having these problems?

Did you try another cable?

It has been a while now since the problems started. Also i dont recall getting any updates on the day the issues began.
I have tried multiple cables. Everything stays the same.

Have you tried a factory reset?

Also the speaker failing is a common problem with this phone. If you don't mind using a screwdriver, there's a post in the general forum on how to replace it. (it's really cheap and easy)

Yeah i did try factory reset with a full on format and cache wipe still the same.
Also i will check out the speaker solution thanks.

Is RMA an option for you? If not, I'd try replacing the USB port module for which you can find a replacement on ebay for a few bucks. Although the Asus cover, SD, SIM card and capacitive buttons problems and battery drain at so high rate seem to suggest something is wrong at deeper level than just USB module.

That is what i tought. Considering all issues i think it is beyond "home repair".

Phone won't charge or connect to USB, but constantly says its connected.

Having some issues with my ET4G here, not really sure how it happened. My phone went into random bootloops earlier today after pulling it off the charger in the morning. I finally was able to get it booted up but the notification light continued to stay red and it basically thinks there is a USB cable connected to it. When plugged into a pc or charger it does not charge or mount into odin. I've got the thing booted into odin mode now and plugged in, but odin just isn't seeing it. Both sprint and sammy both said they have NEVER heard of this issue, I don't know if I believe it. I have a replacement on the way (when I brought it to the sprint store the tech cracked the screen putting it back together so they are replacing it for me) but I'd like to get it atleast half working for the weekend. Any help would be appreciated!
Edit: I forgot to mention that when I put a battery in the phone, it automatically boots up. Sometimes it is successful, but sometimes it just loops at the screen you get when you charge your phone while powered off (note the phone is unlpugged!!!) Pretty weird symptom, but I know the phone doesn't normally boot itself up when a battery is put in it.
i see this alot with the samsung replenish...my theory is youve been using an off brand charger and its made the pin inside the charging port crank up at an angle, making the device think its always plugged in
i fix the replenish's easy enough by taking some tweezers and bending the little pin inside the port back down, works everytime
im a tech at an indirect store fwiw

This sounds highly possible. Also try pulling your sd card to see if that makes any difference.
Looking inside the charger port it doesn't look like anything is out of sorts. A little corrosion from humid weather and working outdoors but never any water damage. I'm looking at the inside of my phones port right now and all the gold strips are at the same level, and the cable seems to click in just fine. Am I missing something? And yeah for the record I have like 4 different USB cables I use and they are all different brands. Let me know if I should be looking for something else, or if you guys have any other input. I was able to get it to mount before I left for the sprint store, pushed a stock setup and older modem so they wouldn't question anything, but now it's just completely not connecting. Also, when I was able to mount it earlier, it would not charge but was atleast recognized by odin. When the sprint tech had my phone apart I saw the charger port myself it didn't look to have any physical damage to it...such a weird issue!

Yeah pulled the SD card as well. Tried most of the typical stuff but please mention anything "obvious" sounding anyway cause at this point I'd be willing to try double backflips to get the thing working.

You're referring to the 5 gold strips on the topside of the port on my phone, correct? I mean that's what I assumed but if I'm wrong or there are pins I'm unaware of let me know.
if everything is a go, you might consider trying a hard reset

The plastic housing or harness seems to be parallel to the screen, maybe slightly downward. And the little gold strips on top of the housing all seem to be flat.
A hard reset? I've tried wiping this thing a million times if that's what you mean by hard reset. Driving me crazy!

Haha yeah I don't think theres much I can do. I'm pretty sure its software related, when the phone is not in odin mode, it sits there and mounts/unmounts itself on my pc but always as an "unrecognizable device" and I have reinstalled the drivers twice. I have a replacement coming already, just don't feel like going through the weekend without a phone (gosh saying that sounds terrible!) but lets be realistic here, cell phones are almost necessary today, especially being someone who's constantly taking calls from customers!

[not SOLVED] Phone keeps not charging!

OK... I keep having this problem where when even plugged up my phone is discharging.... Sometimes ill get lucky and it works and charges but most of the time it just starts dying and goes down to 0% so when phone accidently unplugs from charger the thing just dies and i have to try to get it to hook up without turning it on in hopes of after usually half hour trying it catches and starts charging.... Please help! Does this on any rom. Battery does not have bulge. Charger could be the culprit but i have even tried different chargers

Sounds more like a bad micro usb cable or jack to me...
or battery
I wouldn't assume charge issues are necessarily related to the OS, I would start with Cable, Battery, and then micro connector
in that order.
Well all I have is a screwy Verizon brand cable and multiple LG cables... Never had any problems until now

I guess the other thing worth checking is what is using your battery.
I've found that if I'm tethering a 4G connection and have the phone set to never sleep I don't get very good charge rates.
I think the fact that the micro usb connector has such small conductors probably bottle necks current flow, it would be interesting to see if having a high current capable power supply attached to the usb port would overcome the devices current drain, when being used heavily.
But again the internal micro usb jack is fragile, if this problem persists, I can see bad solder joints, or broken conductors being common.
I've took apart phone pushed the little pins back in the charge port not all the way but so they are even, cleaned the crap out of the charge port and it seems that might fix it

well that may help, but I think my point was the actual pins that solder to the circuit board could be an issue too, but that's a trivial fix for any tech that is familiar with soldering. Or even replacing the jack, but you need to illuminate all other possibilities, if that is the issue, I'm sure you can find a repair tech to reflow some solder or replace the jack.

Everytime I've experienced this issue it's been the cord. Some will charge and allow me to transfer stuff. Some will just charge and some do nothing. I stopped going cheap on em. Have had one for a year now that has never messed up. My wife has been through 3 or 4 for her Evo (HTC cord). Hit the pc section somewhere and buy em like that. Better quality and usually less expensive then one with a phone logo on it.
Hope you get it working. That's always a pain in the butt.

Must be a port issue then. Local corporate Sprint store. If its like here in Michigan less than $30 fix or phone swap. Has to be corporate store though.

[Q] Phone not charging?

I have Samsung Galaxy Grand running stock rom with no root & other modifications. Phone is running smoothly, but since yesterday, I am facing a strange problem. The Samsung Voice starts randomly while using a phone & since today, phone has stopped charging altogether. I have tried four different Samsung original chargers with no luck.
What may be the problem? Phone doesn't have any physical damage & is in pristine condition. Weather is really humid due to heavy torrential rain. Can humidity cause such problem?

[FIX] "screen flicker, screen freezes, and random restarts with low battery" SMT700

[FIX] "screen flicker, screen freezes, and random restarts with low battery" SMT700
When The Crashes happen: Usually the tablet will crash on Google chrome When the Battery is below 60% and around 15% it will simply crash on the lock screen.
People say the fix for this is to Re solder the battery clip or give it to Samsung to fix
Well I did find a fix But you need ROOT Access
How to fix. First you will need to get a app called Kernal Adiutor. (Link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grarak.kerneladiutor&hl=en )
Once this is installed You will want to open it and set these values (If you find more stable values tell me and i will edit them here)
Under CPU: (Minimum Frequency: 200MHz) (Maximum Frequency : 1100MHz (Most stable) or 1900MHz (Unstable)) (CPU Governor: Power save) (multi core power saving: Aggressive)
Under I/O Scheduler: (Scheduler: fiops or zen) (Read Ahead : 4096kB)
Under Entropy: (Read: 128) (Write: 512)
Feel free to post better values in the comments
I hope this helps!

I don't know about this app helping with this problem. But one thing is sure. Taking off the back cover of the tablet(cleaning the antenna contacts) and unplug/replug the battery helps. After this process the battery holds longer.

I had this problems (random reboot, screen freeze and crazy screen flickers with bright flash bars), which occured when it had low battery (below 40%).
I removed the back cover with a guitar pick, unplugged the battery, waited a couple of minutes and put everything back together again.
Until now zero problems, longer battery than ever... So I believe in most cases there's no need to spend any money or send it to RMA.
If you are having these issues, check to see if you have "Turn off hardware overlays" enabled in developer options. If so, disable it. This worked for me and was the only difference between my current Tab S and my old Tab S before it died.

Hairline fracture in the display causing the screen to have a permanent green/yellow tint. If I grabbed the top left and bottom right corners and bent the tablet inward at the center of the display, it would go back to normal. Burn in started to become an issue as well due to the damage done. Technically it didn't die. It was just cheaper to buy a new one so I did and gave the old one to a friend.
I also had flickering and restarts. Removing the battery and plugging it back in fixed it for me.

Same here it got so bad I couldn't even use my tablet. I cleaned out the battery connectors with rubbing alcohol and firmly reconnected them. I used not be able to get below 20% battery without the tablet rebooting like crazy and screen getting glitchy. Today I finally was able to completely kill the battery without a single glitch or reboot.

Unplugging and replugging in the battery for permanent fix but requires you to open the case
So just as simple as that? I´ll give it a try.
Exact same problem with my T800. Just straight death the second it hits 58%. however, turning on stock power saving mode (along the same lines as OP) did the trick for me. Not a single crash since then, with both Loli and MM. Also downloaded kernal adiutor and ran it ontop of powersaving mode to overclock\undo the horrendusly slow state. Meh sounds counterintuitive but it worked.
i tried opening the covere method it worked for me but the problem keeps returning after 3-4 months.
OK, I think I'm having a similar problem. I replaced the original battery a couple of months ago and everything was good for a while. For the last 2 weeks, I've started having a problem where the tab works ok when it's fully charged, but when it gets down somewhere below about 65%, the tablet will sometimes just turn off without a warning. When it does turn off, the only way to restart it is to briefly plug it into a power source. You only have to plug it in for a few seconds, but when you do, you can turn it on again. If you don't plug it into a power source briefly it simply won't start at all.
Once you get it started again, it will run for a few more minutes, before it again fails without warning. Once it starts doing this, the time it stays on gets shorter and shorter until you recharge it completely.
Yesterday, I got a second replacement battery to see if that would make a difference, but it behaves just like the first one. I tried unplugging and replugging the battery connector, but it seems to be firmly plugged in and doing that doesn't help.
I'm thinking that it could be firmware corruption problem, so I'm thinking that I will do a factory reset, reformat, reinstall, etc. That's a real pain and I'm not confident that will fix it. Does anybody have any thoughts or suggestions?
The original battery in my Tab S finally died after holding on for 7 years with the annoying green flickering, but fixed it temporarily by unplug and plugging it back in , changing the battery solved it , got replacement battery on February 2021 , 6 months in and the problem is slowly starting to come back , i might consider soldering and strengthening the battery connector like most other forums and answers i found so far after extensive research..

Diagnosing soon-to-be-bootlooped phones

Looks like somebody on Reddit had a talk with one LG representative in which he described a method to diagnose if your 5X is about to get bootlooped.
The procedure as follows:
Turn your phone off, or let the battery discharge completely (which I personally recommend);
With the phone off, plug in the wall charger.
If your phone only displays the battery icon and starts charging, you're good. But, if your phone starts to boots up -- displays the Google logo and starts the boot animation -- expect your phone to brick soon.
Also, the manufacturing date seems to have a role in this case as well, looks like most bootlooped phones have been manufactured in October of 2015. I have a H791 manufactured in November 30th 2015 with no problems so far -- I've dropped the phone a few times (with the case), used the advanced governor tweaks, overclocked, applied thermal tweaks, rooted and restored the phone a dozen without any issues so far.
Mine is october 2015, 791. System modified, rooted, overclocked, a lot of fashing mods. Still works without aby issues.
When I plug device to charger, It show battery icon.
Holysh*t. Mine is 791, manufactured Oct 2015. And I always let my battery discharge to zero before I plug it in. I notice that sometimes it boots up and sometimes it doesn't.
my serial starts with 511 so its Nov 2015.. I was going to root my phone until I read about the boot loop plague think its safe to?

thats bad for the battery mate plug it in around the 30% mark
What if every 5X hardware eventually degrades with time, someone whose phone is not booting today might boot up one day in future while charging, and eventually end up bootlooping.
Lol mine's H791, bought January 2016 and it died 1 week and a half days ago, never tried any other ROMs except being stock itself and occasionally changing kernels and recovery, also I never remember anything it boots up after charging my phone being discharged completely

Unlikely, since not all 5X's are affected by this. Besides any manufacturing issue (the bootloop cause), specific material characteristics (like the normal wear and tear of lithium batteries) or environment, electronics won't degrade up to this level in the medium term.
The charging boot up is only a symptom that something wrong is already going on. LG said that the bootloop is caused by loose components, which can get worse over time by physical stress (see the iPhone 6 touch sickness) or heat.
So, the perfectly assembled 5X's will not get bootlooped and should last a long time.

think it is safe to assume that whatever happens causes the battery to no longer have the ability to charge, on my first 5x the dead one soon as i got it (used) I was iffy about the battery and if it was charging or not I would see charging animation and then other times I wouldn't. I bought a brand new battery off ebay before attempting the FRP removal, just seemed like a smart thing to do, used phone and all, but by the time the phone passed away it managed to fry the new battery as well, I went to use it in the rebuilt from two broken and it would not charge...imagine that
i think there should be something (a tool?) official to diagnose. So anyone can legally ask for a replacement. But i guess that is the same reason we dont have already it
Anyway thanks for the infos, glad to have at least something!

I bought a brand new battery off ebay before attempting the FRP removal, just seemed like a smart thing to do, used phone and all, but by the time the phone passed away it managed to fry the new battery as well, I went to use it in the rebuilt from two broken and it would not charge...imagine that

Forget about it, mine bootlooped last week.
For the last 2-3 weeks before my 5x died.. i noticed that restoring a twrp backup was miss and hit, it would(or not) miss some apps or similar..like it didn't restore 100%.
Another thing that i noticed is that when i copy for example some rom.zip or any zip bigger than 400MB on to the internal sd, it would get corrupted, it would change md5sum.
BUT if i reboot the phone and copy the zip on the phone immediately after booting, then it won't get corrupted.
Im not sure if this is directly related to this issue, but it looks like it does.
Guys going to buy two nexus 5x phones , can someone tell me how to accurately check the model number and which model is safe to buy and how to diagnose the phone of boot loop future?
