Hi everyone
I just bought a DHD and I am quite happy with it.
The biggest problem that I have with the device is the fairly inaccurate touchscreen. I am wondering whether it is just my device or is anyone else having the same issue.
Just to clarify, the touchscreen found in DHD is a Synaptics 3000 rather than maxtouch as some people believed. (/sys/android_touch/vendor shows "Synaptics_3K_0x108") Synaptics touch panels are commonly believed to be of lower quality than Atmel ones. I am quite upset HTC did not use Atmel ones as they did on Evo 4G.
So, the problem:
The problem is the touchscreen fails to properly register my finger in the horizontal direction. Vertically there is no problem. If I slide your homescreens slowly and steadily in the horizontal direction, the screen sticks and jumps. Across the whole screen there are about 11 such "sticking positions". The stickiness is consistent across the screen. If you scroll webpages sideways or down in landscape mode, you see the scrolling is not smooth. But vertical scrolling there is no problem at all.
So basically I am having exactly the same behavior on my DHD as this guy in
youtube.com/watch?v=JiNa8EHkViE
If i draw diagonal lines with my finger with normal pressure, I get very wavy lines, very similar to Light pressure for Desire in
cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2010/01/500x_touchscreen.jpg
So I'm wondering whether anyone else is having the same problem as I do?
Can this be a design flaw (poor quality panel?) or driver flaw (touch algorithm fails to take into account for the characteristics of the panel?)
edit:
I think it is normal for capacitive touch screens to exhibit this behavior. But it is quite severe on my DHD. This is problematic because the low horizontal accuracy is annoying when you want to select text / adjust a slidebar / type in portrait mode.
If you ain't happy, return it.
I'm not sure 'if you ain't happy return it' is a very courteous response to a valid and well-thought-out post.
That's very interesting.... Just another in an increasing list of niggles I have with this phone. HTC seem to have cut a few corners with the DHD.
Sadly, unless one goes iPhone, there aren't many decent alternative devices out there for the more discerning smartphone user... otherwise I'd give HTC a wide berth myself.
No offence was meant when I stated that if your not happy with what you have bought, return it.
As with any high end consumer electronics, if it doesn't work as it should, get it replaced or get a refund.

Thank you for your suggestion. Do you own a DHD? Can you contribute by sharing your experience on the accuracy of the touchscreen if you do?
I indeed do own a DHD. I got mine from one of the first batches available in the UK. Unlocked & unbranded.
Fortunately for me I have not had a single issue that others have described. My display is bright & vivid, the proximity sensor works perfectly, no INIT process lag, GPS is very fast. The list goes on.
The touchscreen I feel is excellent. If you have downloaded & played "What the Doodle" from the market you'd soon realise if you had a faulty touch unit.
My experience with other Android devices (HTC Hero) and other HTC devices (Kaiser, Alpine & Blueangel) teaches me that although each device may have same specs & almost the same hardware, each one, like humans, has character.
If this "Character" is something you are Ok with, e.g dodgy proximity sensor, then excellent. However as your describing something that is more than just "Character" i.e a dodgy touchscreen, I would get the DHD exchanged.
I think this issue has already been covered here (even the video you linked is made by the guy that posted that thread). The sensor quality is a fact of life. Ranting about it would make no difference whatsoever. You can either live with it or not. Your choice.
Ranting??? I am largely happy with my device (as, I imagine, the OP is). But I think if we have niggles we are perfectly at liberty to bounce these off other forum members to see if others are having the same experience, and we should be able to do so without being made to feel like a nuisance.
I didn't understand the "ranting" post either.
We all choose to visit here and contribute what we can. No-one should feel like their being a nuisance.
I wanted to understand my device and would like to see if what I experienced is also experienced by others so I can consider getting a replacement from HTC. now the issue seems to be cut and dried because every dhd seems be be exhibiting the same behavior. but I am keeping my dhd because, as I said as the very first thing in my first post, I am quite happy with my device.
apparently xda is filled with all very helpful people. thanks to all of you.
and BTW thanks to tkolev for pointing out the thread. the issue might be fixable through a software update is surely a home thing to know.

I must say that I'm very fussy with my electronics, yet I did not notice this.
If you're trying to draw on it, it might not be suitable. If you're doing all the normal stuff smartphones are used for, I doubt it'd be a problem. Maybe you need a Wacom tablet?
Mine does it too so I guess it's just normal for the touchscreen used in the DHD. Not much you can do but return it if you're not happy I feel your frustration though, there's always something that isn't quite up to my standards when it comes to high end electronics.
Just tested my DHD with Draw(er) (From the marked) and the lines are straight as Chuck Norris.
Bought the device two days ago from Tele2 Norway. Unlocked and unbraned.
Hello,
This is a a very short review of my imported Nexus from Expansys. This will go over more nitpick feature some us care about about in terms on quality not the phone.
On thing that is strange to me is that I have 4.01 out of the box but mine also came with a US charger, I have read that expansys sent adapters for others. If this is an import how did I get the US charger inside? Did this happen to anyone else?
The phone is very light and impressive, ICS is agreat OS right away.
Screen Issue - My eyes are sharp and within 30 seconds I can see these displays have the same issues as the GSII seen here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1320942
It very obvious on grey's but heard to see in the systems blues. The screen shots in the link is still an issue even though its a pentile display.
Pentile - I hate pentile so much its not funny, I actuallly hope they go out of business but I have to say it way easier on the eyes the the lower resolutions displays. I have to squint to see the ridges but they are still there plain as day.
If you hate pentile I would say that this has a 65-70% chance that this phone will not bother you.
Stutters - I am disappointed that 2 of 5 button press to the app drawer produces that little stutter. I can make it constantly happen and I have installed zero apps yet nor messed with widgets.
I love the phone and don't get me wrong I am not dissing the phone just an impression from someone who has had almost every model that came out.
I did not post anything positive on purpose because so many articles already did a great job of highlighting the good stuff.
When you go into LCD Test (*#0*#), I notice that the brightness is not really all that uniform on the display. If I bring the device close to my face I see the brightness as same and when I extend the phone further away from I can see a little difference of brightness (very minute difference; extremely hard to tell unless you play with the different brightness modes). To appreciate the difference you need to squint your eyes. Am I trying to be too nit-picky?
Okay, my eyes are playing with me; just washed my eyes and everything looks normal, what AMOLED should look like, early mornings, lol :silly:

yeah seems you're trying really hard to find any imperfections. "extremely hard to tell, play with brightness modes, squint eyes etc"
should i do this under a full moon or candle light?
i usually stay away from these threads but just found all the conditions you mentioned funny. just use your phone under normal conditions. i havent noticed a single flaw... cause im not looking & digging for them.
you have three threds open discussing screens, mura & audio problems... seems like maybe you're trying to convince yourself or others about something?
EDIT: Four threads.... Refurbished phone
Perhaps, I know I paid too much, and finding flaw's like these shouldn't be so easy. I mean, I've been through '3' Note 2 already, currently on my 3rd Note 2, and am I trying to mend my relationship with the Samsung Company, especially after facing more or less similar experiences on the S2 and Note 1. I know my AMOLED display is fine, but physical things like chrome-paint finish, and elevated home button are things I really hoped Samsung would improve their quality-control on; pretty soon, they will loose business as a result of this. I made threads not only to share my insight, but to also have an open discussion about everything I have come across with the Note 2. Not surprising, many have seemed to confirm the same things that I see. So, I'm just joining the bandwagon and moving along. :good:
I think I'm going blind because im very satisfied with screen on my note or maybe I'm not that picky. I be happy if it last next 2-3 years or until my next impuls buy.

Yeah we all heard about the screen quality issues and stuff, But is it really that bad? I would love to get one coming from the og pixel xl. But do you guys recommend me getting one?
I got a P2XL 64BG black to replace my 1st Gen Pixel 128GB and overall I'm happy with my purchase. That's not to say the display is perfect, I do have the blue shift when I look at it sideways and I also don't really like the bland colors. I haven't had any issues with burn-in yet though I did install the 8.1 beta to make sure that the soft keys don't burn in. That said Google increasing the warranty to 2 years, the beta dims the soft keys and Google is promising a software update that will offer a more saturated color scheme.....so between what Google has done and are in process of doing I am not really too concerned about the display issues. Display aside it's a great phone, it doesn't get warm like my Pixel did, it's very fast, smooth, great battery life and the 3 years of OS updates is a great perk. I can't speak for anyone else but I am happy with my purchase and will be keeping my P2XL. The best advice I can offer is what others have said in other threads, go to a store and check one out for yourself then decide.
It rocks. Get it.
i love my phone. im coming from the OG pixel
all the negative reviewers are just dumb imho
I highly recommend it for fun on XDA! But it's your decision...
I love the phone too. Only grip is the fingerprint reader. Finger needs to be dry & clean. Otherwise it won't work well.
Go for it. I upgraded to P2XL from Nexus 6

I have had mine for nearly two weeks and it is absolutely stunning. Yeah I have a bit of the blue shift (to be expected on most OLED displays) that I don't mind at all, haven't seen much burn-in at all but have moved over to immersive mode via ADB until they release some additional screen fixes/improvements to try and help with it, haven't seen any black smearing whatsoever, etc. In regards to the bland colors, Google announced saturation mode that I imagine will come with the December release? This will be x amount more than the current vibrant mode or whatever it is, I believe it is +10%+, not certain on how much more saturation mode will be, if you dig more vibrant colors and all. I actually prefer, the more true-looking, duller colors but do have vibrant mode turned on (not much of noticeable difference), will play around with "saturation mode" once available but will likely stick with the duller look, saturation mode may be good for video viewing/editing and watching movies/videos.
Like the first poster said, the phone is great, does not get warm, incredibly fast and feels buttery smooth, the battery life is phenomenal, 2 years of warranty and 3 years of OS updates. Could not be happier. I almost got 50 hours out of my phone the other day, probably would have but needed to head out so wanted to throw it on charger, ended up charging it at 7% and about 48 hours off charger, granted I barely had screen on (4 hours) as it was a busy weekend where I didn't need my phone much but all in all very impressed as I have quite possibly every little battery sucker turned on on the phone. I did do some GPSing, lots of music, texting, some snapchatting, lots of Twitter feeds loading, etc. but I'd say mostly light to moderate use, impressed nonetheless.
In the end, it is your choice but I could not be happier with my purchase and would do it all over again, had I known about screen issues upfront.
EDIT: I take back the saturation mode coming in December release.....it is here and available in the November release. I will post screens to a different thread and can provide a link to it later but just thought I'd let you all know.

Yes
Disregarding screen issues that don't even bother me personally. The colors I know will be fixed either by Google or of not with root and custom kernele we will be able to fix that. The phone is amazing. If you do paranoid about the screen stop at a Verizon location and look at it even if you don't have verizon, but I don't recommend buying in through Verizon! :highfive:
I've had mine almost 2 weeks and really haven't found any reason to not love it.
I did a comparison of the screen / blue tint HERE if you want to see a bunch of side by side comparisons.
But honestly, like I've told everyone who's asked: get one, keep it a week, use it play with it, run it through your daily use, and then make the call to keep it or return it.
Nearly every aspect of liking a device is subjective to each person's individual likes and tastes.
I'd hate to see you cheat yourself out of a great device because someone else said it sucked, or had this flaw.
Get it. If you hate it, or just can't get over the blue tint, return it and move on
No one knows better than YOU what you'll like.
If you have to ask, then the answer is NO!
The device is only for self-minded individuals.
If you like a good screen then no

?? My screen is beautiful and I am not experiencing some of the issues others have had. I believe most of the screen issues were related to a few specific batches....they have already came out with an update to fix and help improve many of the lil nuances ppl have been knee jerk complaining about. The screen is fine unless you are the super picky type.

False statement. The update only sorted the colours... More saturation. Most of the issues are hardware. It's not just a few batches. You don't have to be picky to not be happy with the issues...at the high price too. It's been proven the LG p oled in most cases is sub par

Did it? It didn't provide the dimming of the home back and recent buttons to help prevent burn-in? It didn't update brightness configs? It wasn't just colors...
And yes not all batches have the burn-in or even the severe blue tinting issues. I have no signs of burn-in and compared my phone to another P2XL and my blue tinting is hardly visible when my buddies is easily noticed. He does not have any noticeable burn-in either.
I understand that a lot of it is hardware related but there can be improvements on software side to help make the screen last as long as possible as we all know OLEDs decay over time regardless. Is it sub par, it very well may be, but to the average user I dont know if they will notice it being sub par versus superb. I honestly have zero gripes with screen, it is highly objective, but so is the term "good screen".
And, as I mentioned in my post, in the end it will be up to the end user to decide if the screen is bad or not.
I love my Pixel 2 XL. It's the best phone I've ever used and that's with five years of selling phones.
The screen isn't as good as Samsungs. I wish that it was, especially considering the price tag. But the screen is not bad but any means. The blue tint is a design choice. It doesn't bother me. I would like a wider color gamut than just the RGB colorspace and the new "saturated" option just seems to make everything more saturated as opposed to just enabling super saturated colors to be displayed. I find that very disappointing. But that is fixable...
I could go on and nitpick the rest of the phone, but truly the reason to buy this phone above all others is the software. It's buttery smooth. It makes the other companies software look bit silly.
I would recommend the phone. It was otherwise perfect for me if not the screen, and the screen is not that bad especially after the OS update yesterday. I don't see any graininess. I like the natural color more (and now you can change to saturated mode), there is very slight screen burn in or image retention (which I have to look for it by downloading a screen test app and adjust the screen brightness and environment lighting to be able to see, normally I just can't see it). The worst about the screen for me is the blue tint. It was very noticeable when I first switch on the phone, perhaps I specifically look for it after reading all the comments everywhere. After using it for a week, it becomes less and less noticeable. And now in the saturated mode, the blue tint becomes the normal color I am used to, while the normal color when viewed straight on becomes a vibrant and saturated one that everyone else wants.
However, I agree with others that you can go to a verizon store and have a look yourself. And buy and try for a week then decide whether you want to return it.

Hi there,
I recently got a Pixel 2 XL and Iove the phone Minus:
1) When I bend my phone at an angle I see a "blue tint" and when I hold it back straight, I don't see it. is it normal?
I just contacted support and they are sending a replacement but I want to make sure I know what to check when a new phone arrives.
2) How do I check for Screen Burn In issue? Any ways to reproduce it? (Should I use the phone in order to encounter this issue?)
3) Any other issues I should be concerned about when I'm checking out the phone?
Thanks,
Neo
search the forum, all your questions have been discussed ad nauseum.
How's about enjoy the device and quit looking for/creating issues? If you're buying something with the mindset that there is going to be an issue with it you're going to create one.
Burn in is not an issue. Google has already made changes to help alleviate burn in as well. They dim the nav bar buttons a couple seconds after use and they've updated plenty of Google apps to using a white nav bar with dark grey buttons. Google is also trying to get popular 3rd party apps to switch to a white nav bar with dark buttons. So don't worry about it. I've had plenty of amoled displays for years each. The only time burn in was ever noticeable, was when I downloaded a display checker app and looked for it. Otherwise, I would have never known it was there and never did see it during normal operation.
Edit: As for the blue tint. Yes it's there when you view the screen at an angle. I honestly forgot about it, until someone on Android Police brought it up a few days ago. It's a non-issue. Most displays have some degree of discoloration at an angle. This is a little more so than others, but how often do you use your phone at an angle and wish you had perfect colors. Pretty much never. If you're really looking at your phone, you're going to be looking right at it.

Agreed. When I first got the device, I noticed the blue tint right away when tilting the phone, but after a few days I stopped really noticing. Yes, we really shouldn't have this problem to this degree on such an expensive phone, but it's also not like the issue is present when looking at the phone head-on.
Every device has its own issues, and if you go looking for problems, you'll find them! It's up to you to decide if the problems outweigh the good things about the phone.

I don't know why they bothered dimming the navigation buttons. That won't really do anything for burn in. Burn in is caused by uneven aging of pixels. Since that bar is almost always black most of those pixels aren't being used so they are aging much slower than the rest of the screen. The best way to reduce the chances of burn in is to not have the navigation bar background black. The 8.1 update actually changes the background color to an almost white color but only in a few places such as Settings and GMail. Doing that system wide is the only thing that would REALLY reduce burn in.
However, in the almost 6 weeks that I've had my Pixel 2 XL I haven't seen any burn in yet.
As for the blue tint, I stopped noticing it as soon as I stopped looking for it.
I picked up a Pixel 2 XL and noticed the amount of blue tint is highly dependent on the brightness setting on the screen. On this phone, the blue tint is obvious at 30-45 degrees or more depending on the brightness. Yes, it is worse than the Note 8 and Moto Z Force I compared it to, but as others have said, you have to be looking for it or constantly tilting your phone.
The screen is quite good when viewed straight on or even at a slight angle. It still is a bit annoying that a nearly $900 device isn't up to par with Samsung models. For people that have Verizon and want stock Android this phone is the best option.
