New 2016 Google Nexus devices

Hi guys I want your thoughts and concerns about the new nexus coming up. I am eagerly waiting for the upcoming Nexus devices and I would like to know If anyone else is going get them as well?

I really don't have any "concerns" per se, since almost all the info out there is just rumors. I don't even think its been fully confirmed that HTC is making the 2 Nexus devices, but its a pretty sure thing, along with:
- HTC is making two Nexus devices, Sailfish and Marlin
- Both will have Snapdragon 820, and similar internal specs (same RAM, camera module)
- The 2 will likely have different price points
- Some leaked images of prototypes
Other than that, we can only speculate. I'd probably opt for the higher price point device, and not interested in a plastic/polycarb body (as one is rumored to be, the other aluminum).
Beyond that, if its the usual HTC quality, but with Nexus benefits (direct updates from Google) than you can count me in as "interested" but obviously going to wait until release and reviews before even coming close to any decision on getting one.

I'm among those interested as well, but I'm not a sure sale. The leaks do look promising, though.
I like HTC hardware probably second only to Samsung, so I'm thrilled to hear that HTC will be making both 2016 Nexus devices. I, too, will probably go for the bigger, metal-bodied, variant if I decide to upgrade, as I actually like my phone to have some heft (and I want the larger 5.5" display). I have had excellent service from my M8, and I expect the HTC manufactured Nexus device will be no different.
That said, I'm not thrilled about a return to bottom-firing speakers (something I've grown to love about my M8), and while I haven't removed the SD card in my phone since I installed it, having a separate storage device during upgrades/mods is a factor. I could live without it, though.
Price-wise, the bigger "marlin" will probably end up being about the same price as the 10, though upgrading it to 128GB will no doubt shoot it over.
The real advantage of the Nexus devices is that they are directly supported by Google, which means no waiting on updates and patches. ROM support is virtually guaranteed, as the boot loader is readily unlocked directly from the OS. (no websites/software required, like HTCdev or Sunshine) However, I have to admit that there are actually Sense features I really like, and which are missing in generic Android. It's a tough call.

Do you feel disappointed by your pixel c? (and google by extension)

First it was speculated to come with chrome OS (at one point it was found to have been originally planned for it), then the thing was sent out with bugs (I had the random reboot and now severe lag) that were promised to be fixed by software and never were.
NOW I read were not even getting Android P even thought the tablet is more than capable in handling it.
I have to be honest Im SEVERELY disappointed in googles newest devices. The Nexus and Nexus S were solid, the nexus 5 was a miracle, the 5x was a slight taper down with the bootloop issue but google made sure to take care of a lot of those people. Now my pixel 2 already had the mic bug, was replaced and now has the loose USB C issue and will have to be swapped again. On top of that the pixel c was being sold new about 3 or 4 months ago and now google is basically telling those people "hey guess what you bought something were not supporting!"
Honestly this was a pretty pricey tablet but between the random rebooting and atrocious lag that never got nor will apparently ever be fixed, I for one am completely disenchanted with googles devices. I see the watch may be coming out in fall but I dont know if I can bring myself to even be curious about it.
How do you guys feel about the tablet? Do you have any of the issues? Do you plan on buying another from them?

I don't own this device (yet) but having only every used Nexus tabs (and I have used them all) and hearing about Pixel devices, google needs to either A: reform their in house hardware development system (fire and hire designers, get more people to scrutinize design, better manufactures, etc.) or B: Scrap in house hardware design and go back to other OEM's and re-open the Nexus program, preferably with Samsung and HTC, because let's be honest, the best Nexus devices were made by them hands down. LG Nexus 5 is the ONLY exception and even then the Galaxy Nexus was better. I know option A would cost A LOT, but that extra cha ching is just an investment really. Better hardware sells better and builds more confidence in your brand, which is pretty much non-existent in the Pixel Line up. Case and point it sucks that you are having these issues, and reccomend you sell your Pixel C for a good Nexus 9 or Nexus 10 if you don't mind leeping back down to android 6.0.1 (or staying at 7.1/8.1 if you don't mind a lack of camera or flash)

I think this is the best Android tablet ever built, even if it is a couple years old now.
Great build quality, great screen quality and dimensions, fast and great battery life.
Nvidia X1 is also the best chip ever produced by the company: great Gpu (as K1) but this time also solid CPU.
It is perfectly enjoyable even stock.
I had no reboot or lag or other problems here.
I am coming from Nexus 9 (previously owned also Nexus 10 and Nexus 7 2012) and Pixel C is a great improvement

I am also quite disappointed:
At least I expected that ChromeOS would be ported to the Pixel C. Reading some discussions here, the Pixel C is already fully prepared for ChromeOS. Even the bootloader seems to be a ChromeOS-Bootloader.
The next disappointment was that the Pixel C wont get an official Android P ROM. I expect that LineageOS will deliver a P ROM. We will see.
I also do not intend to buy a Google device again if I can avoid it. Because of an broken display I recognised that Google has a pretty descent support. But the devices are much overpriced, like Apple. But a Killer-Argument for me is an official Support for a custom ROM. (Because I normally intend to use my devices MUCH longer than the manufacturers intend to deliver updates.) Otherwise I would have an Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 (because of the pen). So it is possible that i would by another Google device, but it is not very likely.

Pixel/Google Software Experience on non-Pixel Phone

I have finally made the decision to abandon the Pixel line of phones. This is not a thread to bad mouth Pixel phones; quite the contrary -- I am looking for Pixel-like software experience on a phone with high end specs.
I originally got into Pixel phones on the Pixel 2 XL. I bought mine used, but I *loved* it. It loved it so much, I gave it to my wife, and doubled down on a new Pixel 3 XL order. This was nice for a few months, and then there was some update, and my programs would no longer stay open in the background. That lasted about 6 months, and was completely horrific. There's a thread here in the forums, somewhere.
Google released a fix that made things liveable, but it was never as it originally was on my Pixel 2 XL.
Sometimes in the past few months -- probably the upgrade to Android 11 -- this problem resurfaced. I was running three programs, for example, and then the phone rang. I couldn't answer the phone because the phone program wouldn't fully load. A phone is a primary tool for my job...
I list the above with heavy heart but, again, not to bash Google/Pixel. Low end hardware specs and high end software seems to be the Google design philosophy. It is not mine, nor does it support my (desired?) experience. Therefore, I feel forced to leave the platform.
These things said, and the reason for me opening this thread, is I'd like to know if there is anything out there with high end specs, but the "Google" / "Pixel" software experience? If so, can you please recommend options to me? Please note: I am not a firmware flasher. I do like a lot of the customizations presented in these forums -- and I have nothing against flashing ROMs -- it's just not my bag. One thing I have learned from being in the smart phone world for so long is *my* limitations.
For lack of seeing choice, I am currently in the Samsung world. I have no issues, really, with the Samsung world, but they are slow with updates (rightfully slow -- look at my complain about aggressive memory management, above).

I'd say go for Motorola Edge or OnePlus.
I've never really liked samsung releasing a new android update half a year (to be optimistic) after pixel has received it.

Question So... Who's as excited as I am for this ?

This phone is a massive 90° turn for google as much on the software side than the hardware.
SO let me know:
1- Are you excited for the GP6 Pro?
2- Do you plan on buying it?
3- What the feature, following the leaks and the I/O that you anticipate the most?
For me :

2- I'd love to, I'll wait though. I want to see the firsts feedbacks before buying one.
3- To me, the whitechapel SoC really picked my interest a lot. It will either be a deception or a big nice surprise, don't disappoint me Google!

Maybe. I have the Pixel 5: a meh phone, with useless VZ 5G so I turned it off. The only things I'm happy with are battery life, weight/portability, and that I didn't upgrade my plan to a 5G plan.
New in-house chip. I'm not holding my breath on "new and improved" because Google tends to let everyone down prior to announcement, so I'm expecting the same here.
Edit: To be fair, I flipped flopped on buying the Samsung Galaxy 21 Ultra for the camera. What keeps me with Pixel is their call screening. There's been so many of them, the call screening is the best.

I'm buying it the second it's ready!

I'm not excited bcz it has the same 8mp periscope that Vivo, Realme or ZTE etc are using

Lol and that shows some ignorance. Those other phones don't use Google's software processing for photos. And that's a HUGE deal.

We can atleast have GCam on other 8mp periscopic phones to get a similar output like GP6 pro. Hence wanted Google to have its in-house sensor or atleast get one from other sensor makers specifically for GP6 pro. PS: those other phone can atleast have GCam and I didn't ignore this.

I'm gonna buy it as soon as I can. I am still running my Pixel 2XL.

3- Combination of the Whitechapel SOC and Camera setup. Still not the same amount as the 21 Ultra, one thing Google knows is how to get the best out of hardware they go with. We are talking about the potential capability of iPhone structure but with more modern tech throughout the phone.

I'm very excited as I am for most Pixel releases. I am buying the second it becomes available. I'm afraid if I wait, with the chip shortage, I might miss out if I don't act fast. I am really excited about the new chip and, hopefully, tight integration between software and hardware. I am also really excited for the triple camera setup. Between the nearly 1" sensor, higher resolution and Googles image processing software I am fully expecting them to retake the photo crown back from Apple.

I would like to see eSIM availability on day one. One National carrier, and eSIM for spare carrier/international travel. I sold my Samsung S21+ Unlocked because I couldn’t activate an eSIM!

I have currently a Oneplus 8 Pro. Camera is very average, with Android 11 they moved further away from stock Android, Updates come very slow now that there are newer Oneplus devices (had november security patch until mid february, then we got january patch instead of february...)...
I am so excited for Pixel 6 Pro, as this phone is finally a pixel phone that seems to make no compromises:
Tripple cam
Big Battery
120 hz
Great performance chip (not a hardcote gamer, so must not be top notch for me)
New camera senors...!
I think Pixel 6 Pro will crush it this year.. looks like a S21 Ultra with clean Android.. !! Nice!
But i guess the price tag will be huge, around S21 Ultra launch price (maybe just a little less)

I'm not excited. Mainly because ever since I bought the Pixel 1 and loved it, and used it until a year ago when I got a 512 GB Samsung, I was anticipating getting a 256 GB Pixel as my next upgrade once one was available. I waited four years and now, though, I wouldn't upgrade to another Pixel unless it had 512 GB of internal storage (or have a Micro SD slot, which won't happen with the Pixel). I like my music local and in FLAC, and have my entire library with me. I'm happy that they've finally decided to have 256 GB of storage as an option, but that just won't cut it for me anymore.

I'm extremely apprehensive about this, on one hand it's possibly the flagship Pixel that we've always wanted. On the other hand, it's running a custom chipset that's based on exynos. What does that mean for root access? It seems like exynos chips are always running behind on getting rooted and are generally less efficient than their Snapdragon counterparts. That's complicated by the fact that it's basically a bespoke chip now just for pixel phones.
We'll see, I'm currently holding on with my OnePlus 6t, but OP is dead to me going forward. I was planning on definitely switching to Pixel, but now I'm waiting to see how much access the dev community has to the device

Yes, Oneplus is really not what it once was anymore.
For Exynos Chipset: the exynos Chipset in the S21 Series is great. It is about on the same level than the Snapdragon. Some people even claim it has better battery life and doesnt heat up as much than the Snapdragon version.
Since the Pixel 6 Chip seems to be based on this Exynos Chip with some minor changes, i am sure it will be great!!
It is the first Exynos phone i would buy.

True, while the gap is closing, there is still a gap. That's really not my main holdup, it's getting root without losing too many features.
Google has been tightening the reins on Android for years. Hopefully we will get full root access without many sacrifices, just need to wait and see

The last google phone I purchased was the Nexus 4 at release, then later I got a Nexus 9. The Pixel series has never interested me, especially design wise. If the P6P's renders are accurate it'll be my 1st google device in years.

I've been running Samsung devices the past few years because no Pixel hardware has really impressed me since the 2XL. The software has been great but hardware has been lacking. I desperately want to get back on the Pixel bandwagon and if all these leaks turn out to be accurate this will finally be the phone that does it! I'll be trading in my Note Ultra 20 on it. Wish we didn't have to wait til late September or October.

Yep...I am. I hope the Pro version has a flat screen instead of a curved screen though.

1. I'm stoked. Haven't been this excited for a Google device since the Galaxy Nexus w/Ice Cream Sandwich, though the Nexus 5 leak accompanied by KitKat ranks up there.
2. I plan on F5'ing the Google Store repeatedly as soon as the presentation starts, so yeah.
3. Whitechapel and, Material You (biggest software overhaul since 4.4). Also it seems like Google gives a darn about hardware now.

General OnePlus 11 General Discussion

Hey everyone,
iPhone 14 Pro Max user here,
What's everybody's thoughts about this phone? Why would an iPhone user who gets top dollar for selling their phone right before/after announcement of the next want to buy this? I ordered the OP 11 for a crazy price of $500 after taxes from an open box deal and was wondering if this phone would be worth keeping.
I used to visit this site to find the latest tweaks and cool tricks you could do with your Android phone and there seems to be pretty much nothing that you couldn't do with a stock OnePlus 11. I am the type to try to not be reliant on expensive subscriptions such as cloud storage, hardware that is just overpriced, and being wrapped up deep into a single brand's ecosystem. I figured I already use Snapdrop instead of AirDrop, AirParrot instead on my Windows laptop instead of AirPlay on an Apple device, my home NAS instead of iCloud, and Windows PC's over expensive comparable Macs. However, I still use a few Apple devices in my daily life.
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Apple nor do I feel any reason to HAVE to leave them, but I am always open to other options and I've always had a soft spot for OnePlus ever since the original 1. iPhones are becoming well-polished phones but I feel like iOS is bland sometimes.
In my opinion, OnePlus peaked with the 7 Pro. (It almost got me to switch back to Android) That phone did really everything right to me besides having pretty lackluster cameras. I really was only interested in checking this phone out because I noticed it was one of the only devices that supports Wi-Fi 7, it has incredibly fast charging, and it has USB-C! My iPhone has hardly any weaknesses, so I would really have to be won over big time by an Android phone to make me want to switch.
Do we see a future where, within the next few months to a year, this phone becomes perfectly compatible with a GCAM mod that will improve camera quality a lot and/or we receive some really neat custom ROM options / mods that really enhance the experience this hardware has to offer?
Something about these OnePlus phones and their bleeding-edge performance in certain key areas still have me wanting one every year. I just have a hard time justifying how I could force myself to use an Android phone living in the United States where all my business/family contacts use iOS for their mobile operating system. I feel like once iPhones use USB-C, they no longer have a camera cutout on their screens, and they can support faster charging speeds, Android will be dead in the US. It's a rough future ahead. For me, I used to love Android for the customization, the fun stuff that iOS would never allow, and that there were just so many choices to decide between depending on what device suited your needs most. Just my thoughts and opinions. Feel free to reply with what you think about this phone or how you navigate having to use an Android in an iOS-dominant country. I could easily switch, but I just don't see any major reason to do so anymore. And seeing the OP 11 forums kind of quiet compared to the old days of Google Nexus devices doesn't lead me to believe that people overall like this phone / are working on anything unofficially to try to improve the phone.

The forums have been relatively quiet for multiple reasons:
1. OnePlus has become developer community unfriendly, almost hostile: it's way too hard/too much work to create/install a different ROM than the official. In addition to that OnePlus has totally disabled full access to its cameras, "this phone becomes perfectly compatible with a GCAM mod that will improve camera quality" - no, very unlikely to happen.
2. OnePlus once was a flagship killer but in terms of price/features they have been lacking recently. OnePlus 11 is a breath of fresh air in terms of pricing but there are much much more affordable options such as the ZTE Nubia Z50 at $400 or something, which is almost twice as cheap as the OnePlus 11.
3. OxygenOS 13 is not the OxygenOS you may remember, it's a ColorOS facelift. OxygenOS 12 was extremely buggy and incomplete. "OxygenOS" 13 is lacking literally dozens of features present in OxygenOS 9-10-11.
4. Developers in general tinker with their Android phones a lot less nowadays than in the past. The whole development scene has been in decline.
5. Weird update policy doesn't help. I've heard (cannot confirm) that certain older OnePlus devices haven't got updates in the past 8 months.
That's my thoughts which may not necessarily represent the status quo.
To be honest I see no reason to switch from Apple to OnePlus unless you need advanced Android features such as normal file management, downloading any files from the Internet, being able to send files via BlueTooth, modding, various home screens, third party phone/SMS applications, etc. etc. etc.

You just listed pretty much most of the features Apple users don't have anyway so LoL
Unfortunately I have to use iPhone in my work so 3/4 of the day I spend on iOS. Compared to stock Oxygen OS13 (even if hated by die hard Oneplus fans) it is still much better IMO and more configurable than iOS. Apps eco system is different, iOS have generally more stylish apps but most of them if not pretty much every single one that is actually worth consideration is always paid version only.
From birdie's list, only the update policy on Android phones are worse compared to Apple.

It's sad to see! My shipment got delayed and I'm already thinking of not keeping the phone. I feel like OnePlus needs a really strong camera setup before they can finally compete. I use my cameras too much to not have the best out there. The more reviews I watch, the more people say how the S23 Ultra is pretty much a better phone in almost every area besides charging and not having Wi-Fi 7. Not only that, but it seems that the phone also have custom ROM support. Just not trying to spend iPhone money on an Android unless I was for sure going to switch over. The Samsung has me slightly more intrigued...

SGS23 Ultra currently has the absolute best camera setup of any smartphone on Earth. I've seen its 50MP shots, they are outstanding. OnePlus 11 pales in comparison.
I'd have bought SGS23 Ultra but it's at the very least $400 more expensive which is too much for me.

It's not the best phone out there, but it isn't the worst either. People bash a lot about the color os version of oxygen os. I'm using it and kind of got used to it. It gets the work done. Cameras are very good according to the price. Front camera is mediocre. But the rear is very strong. You can see the reviews. Also it gets better through updates. Lastly and fortunately, a developer got the phone through crowdfunding as far as I know. So development might just happen for op11. Fingers crossed.

OP if you are able why not just use both? I have both OnePlus 11 and iPhone 14 pro max that I use everyday along with my pixel 7 pro. the iPhone 14 pro max has my primary sim in it which I use paired with an apple watch. and I recently made the move to an IPhone in early 2022 full time before that I was android all the way. I still want to use android because as everyone knows it still does things IPhones cant do. so anyways i use my oneplus 11 to mainly listen to podcasts, watch sports and tv. the speakers on this thing are great. maybe the iPhone beats it but not by alot imo. the screen i feel is better than the Iphone 14 pro max. and it acutally has a damn sim card slot which is something I hate that apple got rid of and sadly i see most companies doing in the future. the camera on the oneplus isn't as good but for me i dont care about that.
the only reason besides the apple watch that keeps me on an iphone as my daily is because of a very niche app otherwise i would be on android full time and i would just use the iphone to keep in the know.

This is why android users are generally categorized as being cheap people. I don't care what platform I'm using iOS, android or whatever if an app is worth it to me then I will pay for it. IMO this is why apple apps perform better than their android counterparts because developers know that people will pay for them so its worth their time.
