Hi, my poor Gio is stuck constantly rebooting every time I enable USB Mass Storage. Debugging is enabled. I didn't have this problem before switching to CyangoGenMod 7.2, and come to think of it, I don't recall having this problem until recently.
This problem occurs on Windows 7 Home Premium (regular USB drivers, no KIES) and Ubuntu Linux 12.04 Precise Pangolin, both 32-bit.
I really wanted to add some files, mostly music and videos, to my device quickly, but as DoubleTwist (my main media app, I love the UI) doesn't develop software for Linux, I am forced to use USB, rather than Airsync. The fact that I can't seem to use USB without my phone rebooting doesn't help much.
Anybody have a suggestion? I'll try disabling debugging, or maybe downloading the Android Debug Bridge? I can't try it tonight, but that doesn't make any sense. Why would either of those be a factor in just simply connecting Mass Storage?
EDIT: I disabled USB Debugging, and, though it took a while for the USB storage Android to say that it was in use, it finally worked, without rebooting. Now to see if it'll work again, or if an app on the SD card was causing the problem. The thing is, I have zero free space on the, what, < 200 MB Gio users have? So, if it is indeed an app (or even my Crystal theme), that'll suck.
Stay tuned for future edits!
did u figure it out?.... i have the same problem in my Sony Ericsson X8... with custom ROM Ginger elite v2... 2.3.7 .....
it reboots after trying to connect usb mass storage when usb debugging is not enabled... after trying for some time, it reboots
& when debugging is enabled, the entire phone hangs .....!!
if u figured something out.... kindly let me know...
I can't remember if I figured it out, I know I must have but this was a long time ago, and I can no longer connect to USB anyway due to water damage. I should be getting a Windows Phone 8 relatively soon anyway so it's not worth fixing.

ok so i had the same prob and this is what i did..
> disable debug
>connected phone to usb - mass storage
>rebooted
>again chose mass storage
>worked!!
Glad to hear it. I did end up getting a new phone, but it wasn't WP8 - and because Samsung has some bakas on their development teams, it's actually worse for the storage situation. I also don't like how there is no longer USB Mass Storage; rather, you're stuck with either MTP or whatever cameras usually use. Both seem to be slower than a regular connection, Windows tells you that your device may not be able to open the pictures in your music folders, and the MTP app locks your phone down until it's finished syncing.
I almost miss my Gio.
Almost.

Help
I cannot enter Mass storage mode. It is getting rebooted and also takes away the wallpaper I've set.
My phone is rooted Micromax canvas 4 A210 with custom rom (lollipop themed). This problem started recently. I can recall I installed ADB and so may be conflict with the drivers etc. I've uninstalled the Google USB drivers which installs with ADB but still no help. I checked turning on and off USB Debugging, no help. I also tried changing the USB port, no help.
Further I use Link2SD app and after a clean install of custom rom, I checked options like 'Auto link' and 'External card' as default install location. Would there be some apps which should not be moved to External card? If yes, then what they are ?
Hoping someone might be able to help me on this as it's driving me mad now: my digitizer on my Xperia S LT26i has broken and is not responding to any touch, there is a whole host of of stuff on the HDD i want to copy to the PC. Is there a way to do this without the phone screen?
I have tried sony PC companion but this states that the screen needs to be unlocked and i have also tried opening the phones folder via file explorer but this is returning nothing (blank and no error message but takes a while to scan the directory).
Are there any other ways to for communication between the HDD and PC? I.E. is there a method to connect the HDD to the PC while to phone is off like a standard flash drive or perhaps a way to control the phone via USB via needing to install or configure anything on the phone itself?
[Bump]
Anyone? I was pondering usb on the go and connecting a wired mouse but not sure if this would be usable on this device? Would like more info before purchasing a USB on the go lead.
Also it would appear that the screen is not responsive as it think it's being pressed all over the scren. I.E. i can launch the camera but the autofucs jumpts all over the place - would this present an issue if using a mouse?
Hi Guys,
There is an Xperia S of my friend's on which there are very important data in its memory.
Recently, the mobile broke into pieces upon a fall! The display is completely broken, it is shattered and thus not at all working!
If the eMMC from the motherboard is carefully De-soldered and removed from the motherboard, can I access the data by installing this on some other motherboard and access the data? like on an Audrino chip or something?
Sadly, the phone is not rooted and "USB-debugging" is also disabled!
Please help over here guys, we need to recover the data as it is very important for us.
Many thanks in advance,
- Ranga

Is the phone is in working condition even if the display and touch screen is not working? If yes, I would recommend using a safe approach first.
Connect Your phone to a display using HDMI cable, This will give You a display.
Then connect Your phone to PC and a mouse. This would be a bit complicated, since You need to use a cable which would connect to PC as well as a mouse. There are "Y split cable" which can be used for such. Then using it, connect Your phone to PC as well as mouse and copy Your data using mouse and external display.
My wife dropped and broke her phone and now we are having issues trying to get the data off of it. She's got a lot of photos of our son on it.
I tried doing the screen stream thing but I have no idea how to start it on the phone without google assistance. Someone said you can press the windows key on the computer but I don't have google assistance on my computer either and I don't get how my computer will communicate with my phone.
If there is at least power you can just use USB for internal storage or SD card. Just try to swipe on the broken screen to unlock and access data.
Hi everyone,
I know this forum is more about software and the functioning of custom roms. But maybe someone has experiences with data recovery from a SM-A320FL, stockRom, with a broken display.
The mobile of my son has a broken display. The mobile still works, I can plug it in to a computer and it is still recognized as normal. I can not get access to the data via the laptop because I have to unlock via the phone. I know I could just get out the external sd and save the data, but my son would like to save his data from the phone as well.
The display is completely black and broken. We can not access the phone. Touch does not work.
My idea was to access the phone via an USB-C hub and plug the phone to an external monitor with a mouse and keyboard. So far it has not worked. Has anyone tried this solution and could tell me his /her experiences?
Has anyone experiences with such or a similar problem? Are there any other solutions to the problem, e.g. break up the phone and connect a new display to the phone,?
Many thanks for your help and any suggestions

As far as I know, the phone is not capable of displaying its screen over the USB-C and never has been:

Your only chance would be to use adb or Microsoft's Your Phone. But for the latter, you need to install and set up the app, which would be impossible with a broken screen.
How to fully backup and restore your Android device without root
One of Android’s little-known tricks is its built-in backup and restore process that allows users to save their private data...

As a matter of fact, you could still root your phone and make a backup using the buttons on the side of the phone, however, you could only do that with a blindfold on as you have no screen. (However, there are many screenshots and videos available to see what theoptions are.)
Of course, if you bring your device to a repair shop, they can attach a touchscreen and perform the backup for you.
