when you unlock bootloader with official tool. so you cant recieve any update from asus. if you restore back to stock (room , recovery.. etc). you still cant.
if you restore to stock rom. you can install ota update with twrp (edit ota file)

Try with this one WW-2.20.40.194 first, then upgrade to MM

I've already tried it
Try sideload .184 first then sideload mm.
You could try putting firmware .184 on sd card and reboot to see if you get update notification.
I did and it worked great .
Then sideload mm.
Easy

check if your package download is okay..
can you extract the package?
You are on .13 fw
You need to be on 05/ 04
It's says
Hi,
You need to update to firmware that newer or equal than 2.20.40.184 (20160504) before you could upgrade to MM 4.21.40.134.
Sent from my ASUS_Z00AD using XDA Labs
I have to also say that I'm having the same exact problem. I've sideloaded then attempted to update to MM multiple times per every install (2.20.40.184 to .194) yet it still says same as original post error message. Not a single clue why though as each update is past 5/4/16 required date.
EDIT: Well, seems just need to start the phone up as normal, then place the MM update into the root of the phone's internal memory via usb cable, disconnect the cable, and the phone should acknowledge the new update placed within itself (notification bar).
You might want to install RAW firmware first.

I know phone is Z00A after doing some research and I tried following the instructions on installing TWRP using ADB by Snoop05 but when i use the flash recovery twrp img. command, it basically doesn't work for me. To update, I flashed tbe .zip on asus official website in recovery mode.
For information, my phone is root and has its bootloader unlock.
Do you know why I have this error ?
Thanks in advance

Have you tried doing a wipe before flashing ? This fixes the error 7 on my zenfone 2.

Just install the firmware from asus website from recovery or from the notification after reboot

Sory for the late answer, I don't confirm anything. But I ran into a similar issue with my zenfone 2 and it was a little while ago so I'm not 100% sure but I think it was just a regular factory wipe in twrp. So assuming you have everithing backed up I will sugest you give it a try.
I believe i may have found the solution, although id like to confirm something first, could you please pm me a picture of your Software Information tab inside of Settings > About > Software Information. Im specifically curious about your build number. It looks like Asus' method of catching those that Root/unlock their bootloader of hard coding a build number in when the device is no longer considered stock. so the Assert portion of the updater script will check these build value dates, and if it isnt above the required threshold, it throws Status 7.
