Carbon/Helium issue, app failing to get root. Non zero result. - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So after rooting and Xposed'ing (xposing?) my phone (locked bootloader because of TWN), I tried to use Helium to get all my apps and data back.
Instead, I get the attached screenshot
There was an error executing the Superuser command. Helium will fall back to non root usage. Error: Non zero result: 1

I've since used Titanium Backup, but it's not the same and I still have a bunch of older backups from a previous device that I may want to use at some stage.
I know there was an issue with the G4 previously, but the change log seems to suggest it was fixed.
I know there's the possibility to use the PC app, but I have root (as shown by the blue popup) and it should work, but it just doesn't work.
I've tried looking around the forum and a little bit of google but I can't seem to figure out the issue. I even bought SuperSu Pro just to be sure.

only half rooted?

I attempted to root my phone using 1-click root app and it looked like everything went well. I was able to tether, titanium backup could access what it needed to, etc. As I continued to try new apps I started to see an error message more and more "<app name> as been denied super user permissions". At first I thought nothing of it but now Im starting to question it my phone is fully rooted.
I down loaded Root check basic which tells me that my SPH-710 is not rooted as I once thought. Now Im not sure what I should do?
It should be noted that when I go into recovery mode sometimes I have issues when attempting to boot. (I know this isnt much to go on but I havent exactly documented whats happening and Im paranoid to try it right now).
So here I am looking to you phone gurus for advice. I should have the correct drivers and development kit installed, but again this isnt something I do on a daily basis and would rather not go into this blind and brick my phone. The last phone I rooted was my EVO 4G and once I got that configured where I wanted it I never touched it again.
Anway.. any links, apps, sites, etc, that you could provide would be appreciated.
Thank you.
The easiest way is to flash a rooted kernel in odin, download a ROM and install it through the recovery if you want to after that.

If you were able to run Titanium you were rooted. You probably got an OTA update recently which disables your root. Just re-run the rooting package and you'll have it back.
Re-root Post OTA
+1, got the update a couple nights ago and also lost root even though I still had the Superuser app and could run the allowed programs there as root.
I used sfhub's method to root again and it was a snap:

[Q] Root with No Root Access on SGH-M919?

I'm not really sure what happened. I followed verbatim the instructions for motochopper, I was able to flash TWRP, and I was even able to flash the 4.2 Camera with Photo Sphere (though it doesn't work at all.), but when I try to run anything that requires root access, (Titanium Backup, for example), it tells me that it was unable to get root access. SuperSU tells me that it needs to update the superuser binary, but it always fails, and never tells me why. ChainsDD superuser is also giving me the same issue. I am very definitely stumped. I am open to all ideas at this point.
It's also starting to get glitchy since I did this, so I may just reset it until I can find some other way to get this thing rooted.
I do love it tho. Surprised a friend by controlling their TV with it.
I believe you need this: (I had to install before my root worked.)

Thats what happened to me, and this is thread where I asked and got help to fix it.

Okay, now I have root, verified that with SuperSU, Titanium Backup, and ROM Manager. Schweeeeeeeeet! Now if I could just get the Photospheres to work, I'd be in great shape!

[Q] Cannot update to 15R from 15Q...and more

I cannot get my N7 to accept the 15R update. I have tried OTA, have also tried flashing the zip and sideloading the zip through ADB..always get an error that looks to be a mismatch of the hash. So ultimately I will end up wiping and re-installing...but my question is more than just that. My N7 is rooted with NRT but with no other modifications. The only reason I rooted was so that I could use Titanium backup. I hear people constantly concerned that they will lose root after an OTA update. I don't understand this because re-rooting is so easy and takes only a couple of minutes. I am much more concerned with not being able to update and having to wipe the device. This requires lots more time and effort...even getting my wireless password into the device (63 digits) takes longer than re-rooting. I have to temporarily change the password on my router to something that I can type in, then change it back after cutting and pasting in my real password, which is too long and complicated to type.
What am I missing and also, is there anything else I can do to get 15R into the device? (I have SuperSU 1.65 already.)
Thanks for helping a newbie.
Something changed after you rooted. It may not have been explicitly something you changed. It could have been one of the root apps you started using. For example stickmount will often result in the hash for debuggerd to fail.
If you post the exact error someone can probably guess what you installed that caused the hash failure. I assure you it only happens if a file was modified or deleted (unless you are one of the unfortunate with suspect eMMC memory that is corrupting on its own)
The quickest way to get JSS15R is to just use this post in JSS15R discussion thread. Use the nowipe factory option and it will preserve your data.

Thanks for the response...I will get into that thread suggested. For the future, if an app screws things up, will uninstalling it fix things or not? You mentioned Stickmount, which I have installed. I went ahead and uninstalled it, but results are the same.
When trying to flash the 15R zip, I get:
skipping MD5 check
no MD5 file found
assert failed-apply patch check [zip name]
error executing updater binary
error installing zip
this is all while booted temporarily into TWRP....I have stock recovery on the unit.
Could freezing useless apps (some system like Google Books and useless keyboards) with Titanium Backup cause the update to fail? I tried unfreezing everything that I had done...still no luck. I'm just trying to get a feel for what to do and not do in the future...
Thanks much!!
OK...followed your thread ...read everything and since I saw an error about debuggered somewhere on my N7, I used your debuggered update, flashed it with TWRP and then was successful in flashing the 15R update.zip. So it must have been as you said...Stickmount was the problem and it messed up the debuggered file. I'm still wondering if freezing apps with Titanium backup will mess up an update or if I did not need to defrost everything before trying to flash the zip???
Thanks so much for the help...another success story and noob learning more and more about what the heck is going on in Android.

It has nothing to do with freezing apps. Freezing apps won't have any negative effects on your ability to use an OTA successfully.
Stickmount backs up debuggerd, makes some changes to it, then restores the backup, but sometimes it gets out of sync. When it gets out of sync, your original debuggerd is lost even though there is a backup file because the backup is of the wrong file.
Uninstalling stickmount wouldn't have fixed this issue because it already made the modification to debuggerd.
Keep in mind, normally it isn't root that causes the OTA to fail. It is the use of those capabilities root gave you, to modify or remove files, either directly or indirectly through a 3rd-party app that causes the OTA to fail.
Gotcha...thanks for the help...your debuggerd script fixed everything...I've put it away for possible future use. Titanium Backup and Stickmount are the only apps I have that require root...I will keep this in mind. To a lesser but similar extent than in Windows, I like to keep a system lean and mean....I think Android can benefit from this also.

Titanium Backup hang

Hi,
have a question and hope you can help me.
Became my M9 today from o2 Germany, unlock bootloader over HTC, install TWRP for M9 and root with SuperSU.zip ... Device is root, Titanium Backup work, key is installed, but when I start the batch to restore all user apps with data, it hangs at 0% :crying:
What?! How do you unlock your Hboot via HTCDev? M9 still isnt supportet to unlock by HTC..

No on every app
something like this I knew from my good old I9300. Might be a supersu thing. Although I read somewhere, twrp for the M9 seems not to write to system partition.
As I got my M9 yesterday, I'm still staying away from debranding and unlocking stuff atm.

Rooted. There are limitations. \system is not writeable, as was initially on the M8 until insecure kernels were released here. Titanium Backup can't write to removable sdcard yet. I still have a hornet's nest of diagnostic software running and I have to give it a wide berth because logging is required on test devices.
Wonder if anyone there will notice what I've done after the overnight logs......

TWRP can mount the system partition; I got myself into plenty of trouble yesterday as a result and had to do a factory reset. The good news, however, was that doing so wiped internal memory and its infernal encryption. (I had encrypted the internal sdcard at the request of HTC during the testing process). Apparently, you can encrypt and unencrypt the removable media willy nilly (although you'll get a layered effect where files stored during encryption can't be read unless the card is encrypted or re-encrypted), but you cannot unencrypt the internal sdcard without a factory reset. I have politely suggested that they make that fact abundantly clear in the user i/o for encryption, 'cause it isn't now.
I'm on stock recovery for now, but I'll probably return to TWRP shortly so I can do nandroids.
The \system partition, however is still unwriteable from within the ROM. I few folks I know are working on a workaround, but I haven't seen anything definitive yet.
Keep in mind, also, that this is a test device and there are certain "gotcha's" such as another copy of supersu somewhere in the system to run all the diagnostic software --- the result is that a \data only nandroid would require 23gigs at this point. Not gonna do it, wouldn't be prudent.
Hanging here too and also won't freeze apps.
I know SuperSU is there and working correctly because I have successfully modified files on the system partition
- permissions\platform.xml
- that damn boot up sound
Stay gone after reboot too, stock boot.img as well.
Same issue here ... Unlocked Bootloader, root access and TTB hangs at 0% no matter how long you wait.
But I helped myself with a little work around:
Go to TTB Settings; on the very bottom theres a setting if problems during restore occure. Change it to the classic install method. You have to validate every single app install, but hey ... As long there's no other way, fine with me

Same problem. Just got my HTC One, unlocked bootloader, flashed TWRP and SuperSu. TB hangs...
Will try the manual mode...
Hello,
I am wondering if anyone is able to restore Viber properly. I am having some strange results when I restore it. I am able to restore it using the old method mentioned here, and the app is restored with data. The problem comes when I open the app once. As soon as I open it it shows all my messages for a second then kind of resets itself, and asks for a verification code again. I have no other option then entering the code (the program acts like a fresh install). After that all my messages are gone (though the call log and contacts are still there). Feel like I have to relearn all over again. Any help is appreciated.
I have tried multiple things:
1. Restore using old method mentioned here
2. Installed from Play store, then restored only data
3. Tried making a update.zip and restoring from recovery
4. Tried to just restore about 5 times in a row ( don't think this really didn't anything, once should be enough to put the data there)
Thanks,
Rsotbiemrptson
Chiming in. Same issue. Unlocked, rooted, TiBu & key installed, hangs on any restore. I tried auto/indirect and that didn't help. "classic mode" worked, although in some cases I still had to do a data restore after doing an app+data restore for some apps.
same thing. unlocked, rooted ti pro installed hangs on any restore. will restore data if i install the app then restore data (some apps I have older apps + data & cant do this tho).
auto / indirect but no dice.
I can't get TB to backup to my SD card. It keeps saying it can't write to it. Anyone know what the issue is?
I believe I fixed the hang issue and will contact the Dev to build it in. I'll provide a zip soon and instructions.

Still working on mine running 5.1.1, also. Aside from the fact I can't find the 'no lock screen' app, or whatever it's called, FoxFi is working AOK. I even did a factory reset, even though the phone was working fine, to try to confirm a battery issue I think I was having where it would seem to drain a bit faster after upgrading from 4.4.4 to 5.1.1 with a slight layover at 5.0.1, where if I remember right, I didn't unplug the phone, I think, before moving on to 5.1.1. I'm copying the backup I made of the internal storage back to the phone right now, and after that I'll perform a full apps+data restore with Helium, since the internal storage is where the backup is. Hopefully, that 'no lock screen' thing will either reappear, or I'll find it again on my computer or here on XDA. The last time I had to deal with using FoxFi unlocked, it drove me nuts not being able to the lock screen I prefer.

Thanks for the link. As soon as I clicked download, I found the thing in my OneDrive downloads folder:silly: By the way, if you've never used Helium to backup/restore your apps before, it'd kind of goofy. For some reason, whenever I use it, it sometimes wants to make me run the procedure multiple times. Like earlier today when I performed a full apps+data backup, it did the whole thing in one go. But when trying to restore them, it wanted to hang on a certain game for a while, after which it stopped with 88 apps left to restore. It should all still work, but this is the first time I tried restoring a backup with Helim, so hopefully the way it's making me work it right now won't be a problem. If it does, I may just have to resort to using My Backup to backup the apps and Helium to backup the data, unless there's a better backup/restore app that does what Helium does, but a bit more reliably.
Is working now, I did a factory reset and reinstall everything . I backup everything first with Helium....
