Couple of Questions, about 3/4G dongles, Physical Buttons and rooting. - MTCB Android Head Units Q&A

Hi Guys,
I have had my head unit for a month or so now and I'm looking into trying to change some things.
It's settings are:
MCU: MTCB-KLD2-V2.77
Kernal: 3.0.36+
Build: RK3188-eng4.4.4
Android: 4.4.4
Resolution: 800X480
sorry if I missed something, I'm new to these, and trying to wrap my head around all the information while trying to filter out all the stuff that doesn't apply to my unit.
I have found a dash cam app that will supposedly work once I have rooted the device, now on the wiki it says that if I type the password "*#hct#root#" into the factory settings then in theory it will enable root, does anyone have any luck with this?
I was also wondering if anyway could link me to a list of compatible 3/4G dongles (does 4g work at all) as the only "official" one from autopumkin is a brand I have never head of, although a few people around here seem to have them.
Also, I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to rebind the physical buttons? I would like to have the seek knob that is spring loaded set to a change track feature, so that spotify will pick it up, is this possible and what would I have top do to change it?
Thanks.

All your questions have been already widely discussed and answered on this forum.
Generally speaking there is some solution for all your needs, to find out how use the forum search function.

Yes the root code works.
No idea of list of dongles. I use Huawei e5337s 4g with no problems.
Search for mtc keys, xposed framework etc for your other answers

Thanks, ill give the root code a go later then. Although I may just end up installing malak's ROM and kill two birds with 1 stone.

Probably the best idea. It's slicker with more functionality than stock.
Btw my single is e5573s 4G. Got my dongles mixed up. Works fine.

[Q] bt keyboard INC2 with evervolv 3.2

Hey All,
As the title (I hope) indicates, I'm looking to get a bluetooth keyboard to hook up to my INC2. I (suppose) foolishly bought a keyboard already (Motorola Xoom) and I thought no prob- updated software, bluetooth is bluetooth, and I should be good to go. Not so. I can pair them, but I cant get they keyboard to actually work as an input device.
Also, I cant seem to pair that keyboard (successfully) with my PS3. I dont think I'm just bad at pairing things, as I'm able to do it with tons of other stuff, so I'm looking for advice. Did I pair it wrong somehow? Do I need to get a different keyboard? Will the INC2 just not work with keyboards?
Thanks so much!
Sleepraider
nothing?Any thoughts? Is the keyboard crap? Is this a obvious thing that I missed? Any keyboards known to work that are relatively inexpensive?
See if you can find an app on the market that supports bluetooth keyboard support, Most often what you need is a substitute keyboard app, kind of like when people hook up PS3 remotes or wii motes to their phones. Here's a link to an app I just quickly searched up as an example. I can't personally vouch for it though.

Alright.. I'm giving it a quick try right now. Had thought I tried that app, but I tried a ton w/o any success., so I'll try again.
FWIW, this is one of the most important features for me at this point, so I'll do any ROM the INC2 can handle if it means making this work.
Sleep
Tried it.. and pretty much every decent looking app I could find in the app market.
Testing now to see if I can pair my new keyboard to my desktop via bluetooth and if that works. Maybe the keyboard is actually dysfunctional?

I'm back and I wanted to supply more info. I connected the bt keyboard I just bought with my desktop.. it works great on there.
I connected my desktop BT keyboard to my phone-- same prob; it pairs, never connects. Looking much more like a phone/software issue IMO.
Wondering if this is the phone (shouldnt be, right?) or if this is my ROM. If its the ROM, any ROM that might work? Any solution....at all?

The only way you're going to know if it has any possibility with working is if you can pair it on the stock official (or close to official, ie...andybones stock) software. If it doesn't work there, it's highly unlikely that it will work on any rom. If it does, then you'll probably have to just try each rom one at a time. I don't think that's a highly sought after feature for other people though, so it's unlikely much development has been put into it.

Sadly, I think this is true and I just need to find a different solution. I'm a grad student and where I work blocks my gmail, which was the main reason I wanted the keyboard, so I could type well formed responses while at work when not busy, and not have to wait to do all my "student work" when I get home from work. I guess I'll likely end up finding another solution. Perhaps I can use my netbook with my phone and get a wifi hotspot going to be able to answer emails? I guess I need to toy a bit more.

I've tried all of them.. there's nothing wrong with them.. I just dont like them. I'm an excellent typist with a typical keyboard, but I admit I just suck with touchscreen keyboards...
No worries, I just played around a bit and was able to easily set up my netbook to use for gmail while I use my phone as a hotspot. If anyone has a good app recommendation that will allow me to track how much data that actually uses, I'd love that. Seems like a much easier request than the BT keyboard request.

Now I'm thinking about it.. what if I installed Ubuntu.. which would likely have the drivers for bluetooth. I'm a very experienced linux user and have 5+ years of ubuntu experience. Perhaps using ubuntu on my phone is the workaround I've been looking for! Do we know if you can use USB keyboards (I'd expect this to be true) when you install ubuntu alongside? Anyone done it well on a DINC2?

[Q] Parental Control

So I want to buy my 9 year old son a Nexus 7 after seeing how he uses my computer for his project research, school math challenges, etc. I also see the value of buying him appropriate books on Amazon as he has a requirement to read at least 20 minutes a day. Furthermore I also noticed how he takes our mobile devices, takes photos and experiments with various filters (to a point the mother uses one of his creation as her profile picture). That is the innocent and good side of things ....
I however cannot see any build in parental control functionality in Android that will assist me in keeping it as clean as possible in terms of content visibility on the Play Store, Internet browsing and managing time.
What are my options? I am willing to pay extra if needed if there is something a parent has used successfully.
I think you can create for him a limited profile, but being that I'm not sure, my youngest is 17

I cannot seem to find anything in that regard - this is very sad. I was hoping I can give him a Android based device but there seem to be no parental control function on Android (never mind anything build in). I keep on snooping around ...
One of the problems I also cannot seem to find anything is because I am using CM11 on my Samsung S3 which does not have the multi-user functionality (not to be confused with profiles).
http://asia.cnet.com/how-to-set-up-parental-controls-for-android-62222756.htm basically sums it up. So in other words I have to stay stock with 4.3 > otherwise I loose out.
There are Users or Profiles or something like that in Kit Kat. I don't have my tablet with me so I can't direct you how to do it. But yes you can make one for "Son's Name" and he can only access specific apps.

[Q] Un-Root My aftv?

I bought two rootable FireTVs the day after xmas at Staples, and promptly rooted one. The other is safely tucked away in my *doomsday bunker* still sealed, waiting for armageddon.
During the rooting process I determined that I lack the attention span / ambition to install the necessary boot menu / rom manager and manually update the firmware in order to have an up-to-date stb. So, my question is twofold:
1) If I re-enable updates and remove the dns blocking, will my aftv gracefully update itself? I've already uninstalled SuperSU as I don't believe I need it.
2) Assuming the box is running the latest official rom, will the following (sideloaded) apps still work?
MXPlayer
FiredTv
DirecTV App
Android Terminal Emulator
I have also built my own simple smb folder navigation app, so obviously the ability to run apps from unknown sources is needed also. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that's available on all FireOS versions.
I guess I have low standards, but this is really all I need for the box to be useful to me. I absolutely love the thing, save for the fact that the DirecTV App doesn't like the android version presumably because I never applied any updates.

Be careful with the doomsday bunker firetv. If that is Series 2 in serial, you may not be able to root it. If its series 3. Ex (70900305 or 303) then you can do the Ethernet trick and root it. I'd say remove that out, root it as soon as possible and put it back in the safe. I've done just that.
Now to answer your question. I doubt you need root for what you are doing but someone else may clarify. I highly recommend keep and follow up with root. Android Rom is around the corner and features like quick support for remote desktop etc have immense benefits.

Not sure how much more careful I can be with it than setting on a shelf above my bourbon collection.
But seriously, its serial starts w/ 70900201XXXXX, are you saying its too old of firmware? If so, it sounds to me like I should let it update and put the rooted one on the shelf.

I'm not sure we're on the same page w/ this. I'm very much wanting to "set it and forget it". Periodically flashing roms seems to me like the polar opposite. Reminds me of the good old days of the h-card. Life is too short to run in that exercise wheel again.

Agreed with your point of view, but for my needs, I primarily need root as I use Kodi all the time. I also use quick support for remote support for my family and friends so that wouldn't work without root. Once you've got it setup with root, it stays there unless you mess it up or forgot the block or disable step. I've made a total of 22 firetv's and not one has gotten updated after I've disabled the com update.
As for the Series 2, If you try to update, it will take you to the latest version of the firmware. In old days, it would increment one. Secondly, you cannot do the removal of the Ethernet trick to make it think there is no update. If you block the updates, it will give you an error but will enforce the update. Last week, I had to make 3 firetv's for family. I had a combination of series 2 and 3. I couldn't do any of the 2's. All 3's so far were good.
The good news is that bestbuy versions are mostly series 3. The downside to series 3 is that you have to downgrade first and then go up.
Sounds like I was on base w/ the notion of letting my untouched box update and benching the rooted one until I know how my needs are served w/o superuser.
I've toyed with xbmc since well, the days when my I had to fight my kids to use their original xboxes. While I can't scoff at the quality and sheer amount of work that's been put into it, for my tastes it's always come across as an application consisting of a ton of fluff, a pound of functionality, and a half ounce of useability. I just want to watch movies. It shouldnt take 7 button presses to get to them. :-/

[Q] Need advice about my new T800

Hi all-
Looking for some advice on my new 16gb T800. I've been using it for a couple of weeks; generally happy but there's a few issues. I'm trying to decide if I should root, and then whether I should flash a new ROM. I've checked out the development sections, but since development is already pretty mature, maybe someone who's had this device for a bit might be able to give me advice. Here's the list of things I want:
Lollipop
Less bloat
Ability to install to SD card
Multi-user support
Multi-window for more apps, particularly Kindle (/rant: Why the heck is this feature so limited? It's half the reason I bought this tablet!)
Better MHL support (works fine on my TV but my monitor says "out of range")
disable capacitive buttons and put them on screen
PS3 controller support (over bluetooth)
So.... can anyone suggest what I should do? Simple root? ROM? Something else?
Thanks!

How To - Use LG's built-in FM Radio Apps Secret Recording Feature

*Update/Edit* I've been informed that this radio mod is still possible to do (as of December 2022) however you will now most likely need root privileges for Shortcut Master to access the necessary hidden menus. /Oops Edit pt2. Props to @aospray & @br0adband for revealing this new hurdle & bringing it to my attention.
Greetings all. I am sharing this brief little How-to Guide for anyone that wants to expand the functionality of LG's FM tuner to include the ability to Record directly from the FM radio. You will have the option to record only songs using the apps hidden "Record Music Only" option, or you can record a stations full broadcast including commercials and on air talk.
First a quick side note:
*Since different variants of the V30 include the LG FM radio App while others include NextRadio and so on, for the sake of brevity I am going to assume anyone reading this already has LG's FM radio app on their phone and it is functioning. Depending on your Variant, ROM, and a couple other factors, this may not be the case for you, but maybe you are reading this and now you want this expanded functionality so you will need to download and install the FM radio app if it is not preinstalled on your device.
If you you need to add the FM radio app to your device, you can check out this thread by @rustypie below with some different dl links and a flashable zip made by @syndre or do some searching on the forum as well as on apk sites and I am sure you will find the right method and APK for your variant. (I am using the regular download of the newest version of the app that I dl'd from apkmirror)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/themes/lg-fm-radio-app-download-verizon-v30-t3689294
What you need:
- LG V30 (any variant, or any phone that can run the LG FM radio app)
- LG's FM Radio Application installed on your device ( I am using 7.10.8 on my device, but I had this working on the older versions of 7.0.16 and 4.70.9, so it should work regardless of which one of the apps work on your specific variant/device)
https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/lgelectronics/lg-fm-radio/
- Shortcut Master (Paid or Lite version)
https://www.apkmirror.com/?post_type=app_release&searchtype=apk&s=shortcut+master
I am including pictures to make this easier for people, so please check them out to aid you in getting this accomplished.
Step 1 - Open Shortcut Master and use the menu at the top right to do a search. After you click search, make sure your select "all apps" from the drop down menu so that it searches your whole phone. Search for "FM Radio".
You should see similar results to those in my attached picture. You are looking for the entry with subtext of "com.lge.fmradio.recordactivity". Click on this and press launch.
*You may want to click "favorites" or "homescreen" to make this easier to access in the future. The app will not retain this preference after use and will always revert back to the version without recording functionality, so having a link in shortcut master or on your homescreen makes it easier to get back to .
Step 2 - Pressing launch in Shortcut Master should have opened your FM radio app. You will now see two things that were not there before. One is a record button on the main screen of the app, and the other is in the recording settings menu in the menu of FM app. If you want to record exactly what you would hear on the radio, simply press the record button and let it record. If you want to record only music and not the commercials and djs, go into that new recording settings menu and enable "record music only".
That's it, You are now able to record all you would like until you close the app. Next time you open the app it will revert back to the old UI, so you will have to repeat the steps if you want to record again later.
Enjoy

Same who may use FM radio.
It's free, doesn't use mobile data plan. In emergencies when WiFi and cell phone outages may occur, FM radio can still be there.
Hi, wow, great find. Sometimes I am listening and I will hear something that I want to download but I know I will forget it by the time I get home.
The "record only music" feature is a bit limited though although clever.
If music is already playing it just says waiting for music so you have to wait for that track to finish, then it has to recognise talking (somehow) before it will record.
If you do not check and miss the "waiting for music" message and the track just started then you wont get it recorded.
Even so, click to record is really useful for me.

This is neat, just to play around with. The one thing I can't figure out, though, is why does only THAT shortcut app show the recordActivity? I've tried at least 10 so far, including Nova Launcher's built-in activity launcher, and all of them only show FM Radio's introActivity. What strange magic makes his work?! the lite version's limitation is not being able to save that activity as a homescreen shortcut.

Shortcut Master is definitely one of my favorite apps. That said, you can seriously mess your phone up though. Like really badly. Just a warning. And not like the usual just in case kind of warning, but a legit guarantee that if you go poking around enough you almost definitely will screw something up that you may need a restore or full redo to fix.
I had considered starting a Shortcut Master thread, and half heartedly did a while back, but I called it something like LGV30 tweaks and mods discussion. I didn't follow up with a shortcut Master section just out of fear a hundred people would ruin their phone but maybe I'll start one now if there is interest, since the Pandora's box is already kind of opened with it being part of most of the V30 guides I've done.
There is a surprising amount of stuff that only this app seems to get to. The paid version is well worth the buck ot two just for convenience sake and I'd normally say buy it to support further dev, but I think the developer is retired as I haven't seen an update or anything new in a while other than him taking the lite version off the play store last year, but still worth supporting his previous efforts.
Shortcut Master is great for accessing the hidden system menus such as your APN presets and all of the sections of the phone that are blocked off of the specific build your on.
Some of my faves are:
The hidden section of the systems built in Call recording screen.
-For anyone that modified their LGIncallUI to allow recording, this setting will let you track specific numbers or tell it to record all calls.
The extra hidden menu items that Sprint trys to get rid of.
(You'll notice in the pics there is the Hidden menu, and the carrier hidden menu. The Carrier one has access to a bunch of stuff removed.)
Your built in Bluetooth settings page that LG for some reason doesn't allow you to access.
AT&T's video call settings (these don't actually VCs work on Sprint)
And quick access to the Radio Info section
I'm attaching a couple pics for anyone that may be interested in some of what I just mentioned.
But one more time, you are all seriously warned! Know that you will mess your phone up just aimlessly clicking around.
I legitimately ruin my phone at least once a week and have to do a full reflash or restore. I am actually past due for one now, as I've managed to screw up something and now my settings force close when I try and enter developer options. So again, you are WARNED!
Have fun.

It should work with any device that can already run the Radio app since it's all built into the app, and is just hidden. So if you were able to get the apk to install and work on your HTC I don't see why it would not.
If you have issues you may be able to use "XML a road to vendor apps" module ( I think that's what it's called) on your HTC to get it to install the LG Radio app. Just a guess though.

Most phones meant for market outside the US have FM . This feature was removed or turned off by US carriers to enable users to use data to maximize their profit. As a preference it is a feature I put into consideration when purchasing a smart phone except if I have no option despite the fact that I have unlimited data. I just refuse to accept that I have to use data to listen to FM stations around me. I do not consider a phone as an upgrade when a carrier or or a manufacturer remove basic functions from the phone.

Same who may use FM radio.
It's free, doesn't use mobile data plan. In emergencies when WiFi and cell phone outages may occur, FM radio can still be there.

WELL SAID !! :good::good:
Has anyone had this not work because it appears to require root? I realize that there's no mention of requiring root at all in this thread, so I decided to give this a shot on my V30 just now. installed the latest LG FM Radio app (7.10.8), installed Shortcut Master (paid, forgot I even bought it in the past, go figure), and followed the instructions as written but of course - and my V30 is not rooted at the present time - it's telling me it requires root to even start the FM Radio app with the shortcut (using Launch).
The FM Radio app works fine, but whenever Shortcut Master calls it I get the following so if anyone has any tips to get it functional I'd appreciate it, thanks.
ps
I did a complete clean install of US99820h on my V30 earlier today and for some strange reason now when it's in Hi-Fi DAC mode (I have ~50 Ohm headphones) I've apparently lost the single-step volume control, dammit - now it's jumping 5 steps each time, 35, 40, 45, etc, instead of 30, 31, 32, and so on. Funny how a clean install can sometimes break so many things, eh?
Later Edit:
The reason I'm having issues with the single-step volume is because I'm using Button Mapper so I can skip audio tracks using the volume buttons; it's overriding the defaults of the volume controls for the most part. It has some advanced options to disable the functionality when the volume panel is showing onscreen (meaning I get the single-step control again but the first tap skips 5% regardless), and with the screen off it doesn't provide any single-step control whatsoever, kinda crappy but that's how it goes. I wish phone makers would just include the option to skip tracks with long presses by default, make it an option you can enable. BLEH.
Final Edit:
I decided to do a clean everything last night, started totally fresh, from scratch, and do everything one step at a time, got it all working just fine and with Magisk 19.2 installed I was able to get the recording aspects working too with the LG FM Radio app so, I'm good to go.
From your last edit, you are rooted now? Was that the solution?
