One M8 Stuck in Bootloader (No OS/No Recovery) - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I have been around xda for a while but don't reply post much. I personally have a OnePlus 2 so I'm more around those sub-forums but recently my fingerprint sensor gave up, so I've given it to Customer Service (You can ask me anything about OnePlus's experience). For the meanwhile, I've taken my friend's HTC One M8 as a backup phone. He hadn't used it for a while and gave it to me. When I switch it on, it is stuck in the bootloader(Screen attached). I am averagely experienced with fastboot/adb/rooting/flashing with OnePlus and Samsung devices. I can't seem to figure out how to get the HTC started.
Could someone help me here? I've been phoneless for the past 5 days I just need to get this phone to the latest stock version, no root. I've been trying to read guides but I am getting confused by new posts.
Kindly help a HTC Newbie out xD
Cheers!
PS: I have no clue about the history of the phone. My friend is not really into flashing or anything as such so he had been using the phone as it is out of the box.
EDIT: I've managed to unlock the Bootloader. Now it says *** UNLOCKED ***

Hi,
best would be to install the HTC drivers on your PC, connect the device, and download the following RUU (ROM Update Utility) to return the device to stock: http://androidruu.com/getdownload.p...09G_20.68.4196.01_F_release_417228_signed.exe.
Once the drivers are installed the device should show "fastboot USB" instead of fastboot in bootloader. If so execute the downloaded file and let it proceed.

HELPPP!!! no OS and scary msg "this bulid is for development process only..."
Something went wrong which I am not gonna explain too much.
Now My phone doesn't have an OS.
I have RELOCKED Bootloader,
I have NO CWM installed. Cannot access with some line when booting "this bulid is for development process only..."
I don't have any rom in the SDCARD.
I can boot into boot loader, I can see fastboot USB.
is there anyway i can flash new rom?
currently im downloading second RUU cause the first one is wrong, but im afraid of the batt went out and wont ever start again...
I feel for you
Can't advise much I'm afraid, but try this thread - should be something in there that will help.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1609190
Oh, and whatever you are not going to explain too much, don't do it again
Yeah don't leave it on. The RUU will cancel out if you don't have at least 30% battery. The only way to recover is to either send the phone into HTC for repair or disassemble to charge the battery manually (if it drops below 30%)
but why you can't charge it sorry? (sorry i'm a king of noob here )

Oh that's true. If you can get into HBOOT then theoretically it'll charge when off. I was thinking it was totally fubarred.
Option 1:
Just unlock it again and it will boot into system.
Option 2:
If you want to have stock rom then leave it relocked
run RUU.....exe grab rom.zip
go in fastboot usb mode
run fastboot oem rebootRUU wait bit till it connects to your computer then run fastboot flash zip rom.zip.
headache.
just got it working from (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1609190) -thanks anyway gonzo99, i also found that link through googling and now im unlocked again. below is the line that helps me.
If you re-locked the bootloader
Unlock with the same Unlock_code.bin file provided by HTC and follow this link: http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/unl...ctions/page-4/
one question, the internet here is very slow, how do i determine which RUU should i use?
It should be the one matching the version you had on your phone originally, e.g. if you had 1.26.401.1 out the box any RUU with x.xx.401.x is suitable

Thanks for your fast response EddyOS, can i just run the RUU without the command line, i mean just go through the installation process?
RUUs are Windows EXE applications, just you just run them in Windows
You need a re-locked bootloader to use them, though, and you need to be connected to the PC in fastboot mode for them to work

rooting my new Vodafone AU issued One X

some questions please in regards to rooting my Vodafone AU phone
I want to install a custom ROM/root the phone so I've been reading this guide => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592355.
I want to make sure I have some fallback in case I fcuked up the custom ROM install.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. I found a Vodafone RUU but it seems it's newer than the one I got. 1.28.869.11 instead that one on mine which is 1.28.869.9. I suppose it's better to update mine then? or leave it as is and just flash to 869.11 if I get into trouble?
2. Does someone know of a site that has MD5/SHA hashes of the RUU files just in case I want to verify my copy has downloaded completely/legit? I didn't download mine from the filefactory website as it requires a minimum $12 which I can't afford at the moment. :/
3. htcdev.com site is VERY VERY slow at the moment. bad time to do the unlocking I suppose?
Thank you very much!
1. Newer is better
2. I don't personally but someone might
3. Yes it's VERY slow at the moment as they released the Desire S ICS RUU recently so it's getting a bit of traffic
encountered a new problem during rootin. :/
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm kinda stuck in rooting my device. D:
I'm using this guide => [Tut] Preparing Your One X for Custom Roms (For Dummies) - xda-developers.
I have boot my HTC into "fastboot" mode (it says fastboot in the screen). I then plugged the HTC provided cable and "fastboot" now becomes "fastboot USB".
When I try to run "fastboot oem get_identifier_token". It is stuck at "waiting for device". The device doesn't show up in windows explorer. Not really sure if it should show up there or not.
1. Also, I tried running the fastboot command mentioned above with USB debugging enabled and disabled. No effect at all.
2. I have turned off firewall/antivirus just in case too. Still no effect.
3. I've tried running command prompt as normal user and as admin. Still not effect.
4. I have reset my new phone to factory settings as I've installed some apps while browsing XDA on how to go about getting root.
I haven't installed any HTC specific software. I was just following the advice as mentioned in the XDA guide.
Any thoughts? :/
Without the HTC software you have no drivers, hence no response in fastboot. Download and install HTC Sync Manager from the HTC website and then try again
Technically you dont need a hash for an exe (ruu), if its a corrupt download it wont run, simples.

Hello! You can try these instructions that a quoted. But there have been reports that HBOOT 3.18 is not compatible with firewater, some say Sunshine S-Off is the only way left. Sunshine was created by the devs of firewater but they insist on charging (playing) for this one. In the case it is not compatible with your device they won't take charge you.
ETA:
Here's what I did for those that care
Purchased the phone from AT&T online
Received it yesterday. Software number 1.12.502.18
Used HTCDev to unlock the bootloader
Used this tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2699065
To Root and Install TWRP
Installed HTC SynManager and it installed the drivers. I LEFT HTC SYNCMANAGER INSTALLED. I was going to uninstall HTC Syncmanager if I ran into problems
Turned off Screenlock
From Developers Menu, made sure I checked do not put device to sleep when plugged in
Screen Timeout was set to 1 hour
USB Debugging on
Install from Unknown Sources was checked as well
My AndroidSDK folder is in the root of my C: Drive, I placed the firewater file in the Platform Tools folder and "Shift+Right Click" and selected Open Command Window Here
I followed the steps posted on the firewater-soff.com site
adb wait-for-device push firewater /data/local/tmp
adb shell
su
chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/firewater
/data/local/tmp/firewater
I DID NOT DO ADB REBOOT COMMAND
I don't think I did anything special, but in case anyone else has an AT&T Phone with the same software number, you could give it a try and let us know how it turns out?
Good luck folks!

Stuck
I cant proceed to the last step
"This will load the image to your device and all you have to to now is wait for your phone to boot the image. Once you are in the 'recovery' you should see a orange purple background.

Regaining root access on 4.4.4? philz-recovery and stock rom via htc one m8 toolkit
So I made the bad choice of upgrading to 4.4.4 already (or so it seems to be bad) on my unlocked htc one m8 phone.
I originally rooted on 4.4.3 with the htc one m8 toolkit and followed the root with stock recovery manual using the philz cwm recovery. I then decided to upgrade to 4.4.4. via the software update on the phone
Basically tried to upload the image again so I could root again and it just crashes at the fastboot menu. I also tried to load the twrp recovery and it just rebooted my phone.
The main question: do I basically just have to wait for some update to come about for the philz_recovery image? Or is there potential i'm doing something wrong on 4.4.4.
EDIT: fixed it.. for some reason couldn't flash over the philz recover image.. maybe I did something wrong, but I got the TWRP to work through a standard fastboot flash recovery.. Back in business.
failed root
Once you have the bootloader unlocked download this recovery:
Philz CWM Advanced Edition Recovery
Then go back into the bootloader (you can use the 'ADB' section of the toolkit) and make sure its in FASTBOOT USB mode.
Once you are in the bootloader you'll need to open up a cmd window.
Once that's open you'll need to type:
Code:
fastboot boot
(leave a space after 'boot') then drag the recovery image we downloaded earlier onto the cmd window.
This will load the image to your device and all you have to to now is wait for your phone to boot the image. Once you are in the 'recovery' you should see a orange purple background. Goto:
=> Philz Options (something like that. Its near the bottom of the list)
=> Root device (SuperSU) {its near the top of the list)
This will root your device or at least put the SU Binaries on your phone. All you have to do is reboot your phone. (Keep going back untill you see 'reboot device now'.)
When your phone is booted up just goto the Play Store and download SuperSU by Chainfire. Open it up and you should have root! This will keep the stock recovery so you can install firmware updates later on from HTC.
I hope this helped!

S-On Problem

Hey guys,
I have an unlocked At&T M8 which I'm currently using in the UK, but for some reason won't receive OTA updates (still stuck on 4.4.3). HTC Sync doesn't seem to work either, with it stuck on 'loading data'. So I stupidly decided to flash a rom without backup...
Since my hboot is still 3.16, WiFi doesn't work on any with any of the roms i have flashed. Is there anything I can try to at least get the WiFi working without paying $25 for sunshine? I can't seem to find a rom that supports 1.x firmware; if anyone could point me in the direction that would be awesome.

Run the AT&T RUU. Personally, I would gain S-Off and convert to WWE/Europe. But the RUU is your best second option.
You can find the RUU and instructions on how to update your system manually on the official US HTC website. Link here.
Realize that RUNNING THE RUU WILL WIPE YOUR PHONE!!! So make sure to backup anything that is important to you.

Thank you, however HTC sync doesn't work so I downloaded the RUU from the link. The installer automatically shuts off after I accept licensing (I have relocked bootloader and put the phone in fastboot mode). The only PC in my house is running windows 8.1 :crying:

Also, do I need to download a recovery image if I'm using the RUU?

Its a somewhat common issue. Might be the Win version, or USB 3.0 ports. If your PC has USB 3.0 ports, I saw a user mention you can turn off this function (make them 2.0) and that seemed to help the RUU.
Otherwise, you might need to borrow a friend's PC.

Thank you for the help. I got the RUU to work on a computer running Windows 7.
I know I have to relock the bootloader to have the RUU work, but the computer, and thus RUU, doesn't detect my phone in fastboot after relocking my bootloader. Fastboot displays 'fastboot USB', but the RUU doesn't detect anything. Before relocking, the computer detected my phone.
I have installed the latest HTC sync manager, so all the drivers should be installed.

I can't tell if you are asking for more help, or just making a comment (and the RUU ran successfully)?
Having the bootloader locked, relocked or unlocked should have no bearing on whether fastboot connects or not. I think something else is/was going on, and the bootloader lock is just a false symptom/condition.

Possibly bricked my m8?

I had a HTC M8 with HTC developers edition installed 4.12
I tried to flash install SuperSU and it rebooted.. now the phone is completely unresponsive
no HTC logo, can't turn it off, can't turn it on.
I'm really hoping someone can help me recover my phone?
By the way, I am basically a noob with Androids.
update
if i hold the power button down + volume up / down
it will reboot with HTC logo , powered by android.
it then goes to a blank screen.

Have you done a backup previous to rooting it, and with SU version did you use?
If you've got a backup you could try holding Vol+ and power as long until the screen goes dark, then in this exact moment switch to holding Vol- and hold it until the bookcases comes up.
Now you can go to recovery and restore the backup. If you have accomplished that use a cmd and enter the fastboot getvar all command and post it here, without IMEI and Serial No. Maybe one can find a RUU to flash back to Stock.

hi guys, thanks for your replies.
I spent all day googling, trying to figure out how to fix it and haven't been successful yet. I'll tell you what I did.
If I tried to hold down the volume buttons and power buttons, it would restart the phone, the HTC logo would appear and then the screen would go blank, so
I installed ADB and Fastboot on my computer, and I was able to type
ADB reboot-bootloader and that brought up the Fastboot / HBoot menu
I then flashed TWRP to the phone, and tried to install a new version of the Developers Edition from HTC using their RUU (from their website) but it failed.
Last ditch effort, was trying to flash SkyDragon but there was not enough space on my phone so it failed with a 'Not enough Space' error.
I then read some instructions that mentioned deleting the cache, so I did this, but now, when I connect my phone to ADB, it always says OFFLINE and I can't connect to fastboot or ADB.
I am really hoping I haven't made it even worse.

Hi,
Unfortunately I didn't make any backups, mainly because I use auto-sync to the cloud.
I followed your instructions and got to the recovery menu
It says:

When done, reboot but when TWRP offer to install root, don't install.. just reboot

Just forget it ... your post #1 made me believe that you have a Dev Edition but your other post show you have a EU device.
I already deleted my previous post, so ignore it .. won't work for you.
Just wait for the other guy's help
Or ... seeing you're not sure how to use a RUU based on your above post, I suggest that you restore a 4.16.401.10 stock non-rooted backup and its matching recovery (no need to relock bootloader) then do OTA to 4.16.401.13
You can get all the files and How-To in my thread linked in my signature
Then you can install any custom Dev ED Marshmallow ROM that available in Development section if you want to, no need to root as they are pre-rooted.
Or you can root the stock ROM with no problem with the root offer in TWRP.

So here we go. You can download the RUU here here. It's an executable for Windows PC. Start your M8 into bootloader, connect it to your PC and execute the file I posted in my link. This will help you to get back to a full stock International M8.

I booted my M8 into Bootloader and then ran the file, unfortunately, I get an error:
ERROR 155 Unknown Error
When I follow the on screen instructions from the RUU, which tells me to remove the USB, the Bootloader screen appears
on my phone and it says 'Security Fail'
RUU
Is this because I modified by phone after I bought it?
It's an EU phone from Romania, but I later went to the HTC site and unlocked it and installed the Developers edition onto it, at least I thought I did.
Have you relocked your bootloader prior to executing the file? Has to be done for a RUU to work on an M8. When in bootloader start a CMD on your PC and navigate to your adb folder. Then type "fastboot oem lock" and right away "fastboot reboot bootloader" to verify that it says relocked at the top. If so execute the RUU once more.
BTW don't remove it from USB while flashing until flash has been completed otherwise the flash is going to fail.

Only if the M8 ist recognized by adb and fully booted, as then you could reboot to recovery by "adb reboot recovery".
But as I understood you are now on stock again by RUU aren't you!?
It's a risk to try to flash Custom Recovery and ROM, without been able to boot to bootloader by using hardware buttons, as if you get stuck again there won't be an easy way out of it.

It's a risk to try to flash Custom Recovery and ROM, without been able to boot to bootloader by using hardware buttons, as if you get stuck again there won't be an easy way out of it.

He can't be stock by RUU because a RUU is not flashed via TWRP. And he never mentioned to try to flash a custom recovery, he's already on TWRP. And an issue with the volume rocker is always a problem, on a perfectly stock device or a custom modded one.....issue stays the same

I assumed he followed my advice to download and flash the linked WWE RUU when he stated that all is working fine again. Sorry I've been confused for a moment and forgot there are to participants having the same problem.

Try the ADB command or get the volume button fixed. That's about it what you can do.
