Is this possible? I know most unroot the phone to take it in for service/exchange etc but my situation is different. I have to use Good for Enterprise to access my company's email and as you may know, Good does not allow rooted phones. So, I have no choice but to unroot my Evo.
The image that is used in unrooting is a stock ROM. What I want to do is setup my phone - the way I want it with Mikfroyo - with all the tweaks etc and then "just do the unrooting part". If that makes any sense - I don't need any superuser permissions etc.
Long story short - can a phone be unrooted with a custom ROM instead of a stock ROM?
im pretty sure this is impossible dude, sorry, just leave it all rooted, whats the problem
I know you can't unroot and keep a custom ROM but I wonder if there is a way to hide the fact that you're rooted from the app. What kind of message pops up when you install it?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
It just says that Good cannot run on a rooted phone and just locks the app - I have to call IT to get an unlock code using the device ID that is displayed in Good's pop-up message.
It has to be checking for something specific and I bet there is a way to fudge it but unfortunately that's outside my realm of understanding. I would ask one of the devs here about it.
What permissions does the App request when you install? It could just check for SuperUser

I which case you could either delete superuser or use it to block the app... perhaps?
I am sure its more complicated than that - if they are touting themselves as a replacement for blackberry security for iPhones and Android - I seriously doubt a simple fudging of the superuser permissions will deceive it. Also, I'd like to comply with my company's requirements for using an Android phone so I don't get into trouble.
So from what I understand - you cannot have a custom ROM on an unrooted phone. Thanks so much guys - I'll just have to learn to live with the bloated stockware and manual restores arghh......
It's not possible.... to unroot, you'd have to RUU, which returns the phone back to stock. And then, you'd have no way of flashing a custom rom unless you rooted again
ok this is one thing that I am starting to not understand here...
so many people when they answer - say "yes" it can be done or "no" it can not be done...
...ummm where is the why? It would be very informative to know such things or if someone has even tried said thing before.
like why can't you just run a ROM or other flash file from renaming the file and letting the stock loader do the flashing? ......answer: because the stock loader does a file signature check - see? that makes sense and answers the why. it also helps users to retain the information as well as understand it.
I would love to know why the OP can't just run the unrevoked s-on tool from here http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever#custom_splash (in the FAQ section) without removing his custom ROM and just make sure he doesn't use any apps that need the su access. sounds like it should work? has someone done this and found that it does not work? flashing back to s-on should just prevent flashing to any other ROM's I would think from everything I have read in this forum.
or once s-on is back does it also check the current ROM on the phone and would cause some issues? would be great information to know. because if the security only checks file signatures of flies to be flashed and not the current ROM it seems like the OP could do what he is wanting to.
well, just thought I would ask to see if I could gain some more understanding as to the mechanics of everything
It would be good to know if this works with Good for Enterprise. I am stuck on an SGS 2.1 with Telstra and want a non stock ROM but really need to use Good.

I did not know that, and that SUCKS. My company's piloting Good now, and I was really looking forward to it. This just infuriates me. Mobile device makers are getting away with things that desktop/laptop makers never dreamed of trying. We shouldn't even NEED to "root" a phone. Imagine if you needed to hack your Windows machine in order to get the admin password and be able to install whatever you want. Now yes, I get that companies often do add those restrictions on their devices, and that they need to protect their data. Allowing access to company data on a personal device might make it a little more of a gray area, but it still blows. Good should be able to develop a system that can be secure, even if you have root access.
Here's a thread I just found. It sounds like you can just delete su and the superuser.apk. I think you can keep the custom rom, but you probably wouldn't be able to run anything that needs root, like Wireless Tether, Titanium Backup, or whatever. But you could probably have a flashable zip to re-add them when you need them. Or maybe one of the temp root methods would work. But it makes me furious that this is needed.

My thoughts exactly
Update- I was able to get Good running finally on a custom rom - However, I had to forgo my superuser capabilities. I just renamed both the Su and Superuser.apk and then was able to run Good without any issues. I can easily restore Superuser access by adb when I need to. The good thing is that with the recovery being there, I can still flash updates without needing superuser access.
Thank you all for your help.

are there still temp root methods that work on the EVO?
I am using Mikfroyo 4.5.
Just came across this thread and was seeing if your GFE was still working? I have a DX and put a custom ROM and could not get it to work. I'm waiting for my new PIN and have removed SU to see if it works.

I rooted my HTC Salsa to install apps2sd which is great, but what commands do i have to run and where to be able to rename su.apk ?

OK guys, Firstly apologies if I'm duplicating any threads, I haven't been on for some time so a little out of touch and also logged in on a mobile device... I'm looking to either unroot my phone, hide root or work around for apps. I've searched high and low and can't find a working method thus far.. I've always rooted my devices but it seems there are more and more apps unable to work on rooted devices. I've tried apps like hide my root etc and tried disabling SU in the app menu with no avail, I need more so Barclays banking but also sky go app working. I work as a response driver and can have periods at work with no events so rely on sky go to keep my brain at least semi functional. I completely forgot these wouldn't work on my phone after I rooted it yesterday. Can anyone offer a solution to get these apps to work either via somehow cloaking root, installing older APK or anything I'm open to all suggestions whether it's something direct with handset or via ADB... Or alternatively advise the easiest way to remove root. Bootloader unlocked via HTC Dev, PhilZ touch ClockworkMod Recovery, S-off via firewater. May also be worth mentioning I'm in UK
Your help is greatly appreciated

There is currently no way to get Sky Go working on a rooted phone. It's the one of the reasons why I don't root any more

I had this problem but with barclays, didnt realise sky go wouldnt work. You have to flash a unrooted recovery through TWRP.
EDIT: Try this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
Look for your software number in the about section at the bottom of settings, mine was something like 1.54.401.5. Im on o2 so i used the o2 one, so download depending on your carrier. Also the number doesn't have to be 100% the same, as long as the first 3 numbers match you're laughing. make sure you download an unrooted one though (pretty sure they all are) put it onto your sd card wipe the phone then install the unrooted rom. Make sure it goes in sdcard/twrp/backups/(modelnumber)
if youve made any other backups with twrp they'll be in there so you know you're in the right place.
Hope this helps. I soft bricked mine so this is how i got out of it.
I've never used the apps you mention but I've had success getting no-root apps running with exposed and root cloak.
Hi,
I am new to this forum after spending quite a lot of time in the background looking around.
I have tried to search this forum for the information I need however I am just after some reassurance before going ahead with trying to change the ROM on my Android car headunit.
I have purchased this head unit from Pumpkin UK (via Amazon) here
I have looked extensively at the rather large thread here and have just have a few queries if anyone would be kind enough to try and help or point me in the direction to look.
The car head unit currently shows the following information in settings
Photo
MCU Version MTCB-KSP-V2.68, Jul 23 2015 11:19:43
Android Version: 4.4.4_25072015
Kernel version: 3.0.36+, [email protected] #421, Thu Jul 23 15:23:32 CST 2015
Build number: rk3188-eng4.4.4 25012015.10:43:57
So from the above information, I have determined the MCU is KSP and the firmware needs to be RK3188 1024x600 version.
1. Can I use the Malasyk firmware "update_4_4_4_1024X600_8_RK3188_MAL_17_10_2015" on this unit?
2. Will I need to change the MCU since the only one I can find from Malasyk is 2.68 already so wont actually be updating anything
3. I presume the Malasyk firmware will be in English or it will be easy enough to change to English if not by default.
Has any one else had any experience with rooting this head unit or changing the firmware? Any problems or unexpected surprises worth mentioning doing so?
I think this head unit must be a fairly new model as I have been struggling to much information about it so far from various forum, google and YouTube searches.
I am happy with the actual updating process but I have had the unit less than a week and don't want to brick it just yet if the above is a definite no no and I have just missed some crucial information suggesting not to do it.
If anyone wants any more details then I am happy to provide. :good:
Kind regards,
Steve
I don't think we've seen the KSP variation, you may want to wait to confirm Malaysk's rom will work

If I could make a backup of my current firmware I would just try it, however I am struggling to work out how to do this since everything I read suggests I need to be rooted to backup the firmware. Is there a non-rooted method I could do to backup?
I also can't find a factory or standard version of the KSP variation firmware online either to use if it all goes wrong with the Malasyk version.
Will keep searching to see if I can back up without root unless someone can suggest a way. In the mean time as above if anyone else has had used Malasyk firmware with this unit please let me know.
Kind regards,
Steve

I take it back, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61291848&postcount=14139 KSP MCU is there.
Android Version: 4.4.4_25072015 appears to be a standard huifei style rom. So malaysk for the correct resolution and cpu should be fine. Though make sure to make backups.

Ok, I have done some more digging around and have now managed to root this head unit :victory:
Going into the factory settings and using *#hct#root# (found this elsewhere on this forum) for the password a message appeared saying "ADB ROOT" and a new option called #SuperUser appeared in the settings.
I've installed SuperSu and this is working without problems. To further confirm root I rebooted and tried a couple root verifying apps which all confirm root is in place.
Initially started using Titanium Backup to do a full backup of the head unit however when I reboot into its recovery mode I cannot see this backup when using the "Recover system" option. Not sure why?
For my Nexus 7 tablet and Moto G phone I have replaced the recovery with ClockWorkMod Recovery (since masses of information on how to do it with little risk of breaking them was available). This works great as I have restored a particular backup on my phone after trying a few ROMs i didn't like or didn't work.
Could I replace the recovery in the head unit with the same?
I have downloaded ROM Manager by ClockWorkMod onto the head unit which can change the recovery to ClockWorkMod but I didn't want to go ahead with this just yet.
Can someone please advise if CWM (or an alternative?) can be put on these head units without breaking it?
Kind regards,
Steve
Did you get any further with this?
Did you find a recovery (CWM, TWRP?)?

Hi MonkeySee,
No I havent yet put a custom recovery on my unit (CWM or TWRP) as I am not sure what the likelihood of breaking it will be. I would imagine it would be OK, but since I was able to root the device the need to flash other ROMS is not so urgent now.
Although I would like to have a larger than 1GB system 'partition' as this is starting become a bit restrictive and for some reason I cannot copy apps to either of the SD cards. I notice other ROMS have larger system paritions.
I am not very well versed with Android and the whole flashing thing although I've done my phone, but there was masses of information and guides for this so I was fairly happy trying it, but for these head units it seems there are so many variations that I guess they haven't been around long enough, not as main stream generally compared to phones, or most likely I am just no good at searching forums for the info to reassure me.
Kind regards,
Steve
Hi there,
A while back I updated my already rooted Z1C to the newest firmware 14.6.A.1..236 via PC Companion. I thought it was just a minor update so I did not think of losing my root access
As far as I know all I can do now in order to get back my lovely root privileges is by going back to Kitkat, install Dualboot Recovery, put my pre rooted Android on my phone and flash it.
So here is my question:
Is there any fancy way of doing this more directly? I would much prefer not having to fiddling around with backups, which may or may not restore all my data...
I would also be interested in why I can't just flash the flashable.zip directly onto my phone using Flashtool or similar. As an IT student I would really like to learn this kind of stuff
Thanks in advance!

You can get root with KingRoot app and then you can change it to SuperSu with this guide:
Code:
www.w0lfdroid.com/2015/05/How-to-Remove-Replace-KingUser-KingRoot-with-SuperSU.html
(I know that the guide is somewhere in XDA, but can't find it.) I have tested the procedure and for me it worked.

Thanks for your fast reply. However, after googling the App while the download was still going I found several articles which found the App not trustworthy. Trying to download the App from their site directly even gave my a very clear warning. So I'd rather use something else :/
I think the best reasons against the App can be found here:

If, however, a more experienced and credible user (sorry foguh, this is nothing personal ) can recommend the App as well, I might give it a shot...

There are 381 pages about KingRoot, I am not entirely sure is it only about people begging for specific root methods, but I believe there could be some convincing posts about it. And I don't trust KingRoot that much myself, that is why I included the post how to replace KingRoot with SuperSu.
Nothing taken personally though, just trying to provide solution for you, which worked for me
I am still unsure of the App but as it seems to be the easiest option I installed it and rooted my phone with it.
Everything went quite smoothly. One thing I really didn't like however is the required internet connection during rooting. Normally this tells me immediately that its fetching some malware and I get my hands off...
Of course I also immediately replaced their App with SuperSU but I am still worried it might placed more on my phone than it claims.... Let's hope for the best
Anyhow, thanks a lot to you foguh! It's really nice to get so quick and helpful responses and I appreciate the effort
Have a nice day/evening/morning/night/...

Glad I could help!
As far as I am aware, the internet connection during rooting process is for fetching the correct root method for the phone (and that damn Purify app.)
But if you are worried that there could be some other leftovers, you can monitor the network traffic of your phone to be 100% sure. And of course go through the files manually. (Personally, I haven't bothered to do it, I trust people too much)
The easiest way to say "Thanks!" is to hit the button below!
Hi all
Hope this is the correct area...
My hubby bought me a S20 plus for my birthday through a local dealer.
I noticed a few issues like not being able to use biometrics or install certain apps.
I've since found out the phone has been rooted.
I've tried to do a factory reset, but this hasn't helped.
I've downloaded root checker and it confirms the phone is rooted. I've downloaded SuperSU yet is won't work as ver 2.82 claims it's for an older Version of Android.
I've downloaded solid explorer to delete the root access files such as Busybox and SU however I cannot find these files in the system folder or the system/bin folder.
Can anyone advise on how I can unroot my phone? I am unable to install certain needed apps due to this.
Phone details below. Sorry am unable to upload pics.
UI Version = 1
Android Version = 10
Let me know if other info is needed.
I've even tried calling the Samsung Center and they are unable to assist...
Thanks all
Lee

You will need to get hold of the stock firmware from somewhere like Sammobile and flash back to stock using ODIN. There's tons of guides knocking about on here for the step by step. The damage is done though as far as any Knox related features go, it's like a fuse that blows when you root and you can never fix that.
Having said that, biometrics should have never been affected by rooting so that's a bit unusual. Flash stock and set up from scratch then go from there, could be faulty also
Thanks for the guidance Dave. I'll search the forums for the steps.
For clarity, when I say biometrics didn't work, it works allow me to record etc, but when I tried to enable it, like on my banking app, it wouldn't allow me. This is how I eventually figured out my phone was rooted. While I know the benefits of being rooted, a normal everyday user like myself, certainly won't benefit from it.
I've had a Samsung my entire life, and always saw the secured by knox logo... When you say damage has been done, does this mean that all my security in the device, such as my banking details etc, may be compromised?
Jees. I hope not. As this would really freak me out...
Ok so Finding the firmware wasn't to difficult. Sanmobile quite easy to navigate.
Just a query please... My phone base band version lists g985fxxu1atb2 however the closest I could find to this is G985FXXU1ATBM
Is this ok or does it have to be the exact same description?
Shoo. Lol. Really hope I'm going to be able to get this right **insert nervous smile emoticon here**

The last letters are the region/operator of the Rom. Not necessarily has to be the exact description, the really important are the first that indicate model number.
Ok. So have downloaded Odin and am busy downloading the flash firmware.
May I please be so bold as to ask someone on here to please share a link tot he step by step guide that I will need to follow in order to flash my phone back to the original boot thingie :silly::silly::silly:
I have tried to search but seem to only come up with a nexus thread with no mention of Odin.
~Sorry to ask, but little overwhelmed LOL and want to make sure I do this properly and not screw up my phone.
REAL noob here, so apologies if I come across lazy and getting others to do the work, but am really grateful for the help.
Maybe I'm searching incorrectly???
I found this somehow....

Can you unlock your phone with biometrics? Im guessing only the banking apps don't work because it's rooted. If i remember correctly most banking apps and maybe Google pay(not sure about that) stop working after rooting because the phone is "compromised" and it's not safe. You have to hide your root status from these apps and they will work properly then. Maybe someone else can help you with that because i do not remember how to do it.
Hi Marto
Yes, biometrics does work, although not really good. But that's probably due to the hectic screen protector.
Correctly so, it's mostly the banking / payment apps that won't work, and I can't check or download any software updates... Although I belive this can also be done manually....
But wow, there's an app that hides the root status? That might be a whole lot easier than re flashing. Truthfully I'm Sh!tting myself at the thought of attempting this ????

if the phone was bought as new, go back to the dealer and demand a new one that is not rooted.
could also be that your husband rooted the phone and installed software that keep tabs on what you do.
